The Ebon Fortress: Rilyn Vhaeraun

Ebon Fortress

Somewhere in the depths of the forest, there is a small keep. It is innocuous and unremarkable, no larger than twenty feet. The walls are ruined and moldering, and the entire area seems like the site of a battle. It's gate is rusted and stiff, and it's flagstones are weathered with age. However, this keep guards a secret; in the warrens deep beneath it's floor lies a catacomb where the dead of the battle were buried. Their spirits are at rest now, but the castle still lies wakeful. It is privy to a secret that precious few know, and fewer still are brave enough to explore: a trapdoor lies at the heart of this catacomb, embedded into the floor. It is said to lead down to another place, where darkness is light, and nothing is as it seems: an inverted world within the world, balanced, and yet perfectly chaotic. This is where the Ebon Fortress lies: It is an inverted copy of the manor above, replicated in it's former glory by the castle's memory. It is not enormous or opulent, but it is strangely beautiful; exquisite ebony forms the entire structure, and it always tingles faintly of magic. The shadows cling and spread here as if they were more comfortable, stretching like a hideous fusion of a snake and a cat. It is a place where Vhaeraun's minions may gather to plot and seek the Masked Lord's grace, hidden far away from the prying eyes of mortals and clutches of their spidery foes. Come in if you dare, but watch your step: This place is not forgiving of the unwary...

The Masked Lord of UG

-Vhaeraun watched the works of his servants from afar and was pleased. He contemplated what to do next now that his servants had a hidden fortress on the surface world. New blood perhaps was needed to fortify his power, yes that was what he desired.-

Tathdorl quickly surveyed the keep upon the other plane, and was quite pleased. He had found the pocket dimension almost by accident, and the renovations had been moving quickly and cleanly, at last granting a place where the Vhaeraunites could be truly free of their oppressors. He inhaled the chaotic air, savoring the smell, and quickly paced throughout the palace's halls, making sure that the runes were in place and the provisions were stocked; all was in order, and Tathdorl was satisfied. He could almost feel the Masked Lord's eyes upon him, but he did not falter in his duty. At last, everything was complete. Now, all that remained was to gather guests...

Tathdorl re-entered the keep, and quickly descended through the catacombs, following the path he recalled well. The trapdoor lay at the center, slightly hidden by harmless moss. He knelt down and opened the lock, lifting the door soundlessly and climbing through, making certain to close it behind him: House Aleanrae would follow shortly, he assumed, and would find the trap door too. He made his way to the fortress, and leaned against the black outer wall; it was only a matter of time. He hoped that Lord Vhaeraun would be pleased...

((@Vala: I understand; the energy wasn't from Tath, just the key. It was nothing eldritch or magical; purely cosmetic. Thanks for the warning and the fix though, and I'll be more careful in the future.))

Tathdorl nodded, and watched, arms crossed, as the troops assembled and made ready to move. He listened to her inspiring words, and noted well the effects they had upon her troops; religious vigor was enough to hasten the steps of any who believed. When the group was at last ready, and the camp broken fully, Tathdorl turned in place, and silently marched off into the forest. He made no effort to hide, so the troops would have no trouble following him as he led them deeper and deeper into the forest. At last, they came upon the ruined tower of an ancient keep, and Tathdorl ordered the troops to a halt. He beckoned to Drejan to approach.

"Follow that key; it will guide you down through the catacombs and into the Ebon Fortress. I can guide you no further; this is your defining moment. Do not fail or lose heart: you are close indeed. Go forth now, House Aleanrae, and find your safe haven."

With that, Tathdorl stepped into the ruins and was gone, leaving no trace.

The Aleanrae house stood on the doorsteps of their new home their faith had gotten them here and it would guide them further. Drejan reached into her pocket withdrawing the key, turning she looked to those with her and said "Well we have arrived on the doorstep of our new home its time to enter lets go forward." She then turns to lead them in. Intent on reaching the destination ahead.

A hooting roar echoed through the catacombs, a roughened owl-like bellow of rage, moving rapidly closer to the troops standing at the threshold of the fortress. As Drejan finished speaking the great beast came into view, enraged from its long pursuit through the rock tunnels and passageways, angered by hunger, but most of all berserk by its simply nature the owlbear came to a tumbling halt it saw the party.

It hesitated barely a moment, maybe just picking the tastiest-looking target, before the huge beast reared up to two of its four bear-like legs and swiped a massive claw at the nearest soldier. As it did so, the antlered and savagely beaked owl head atop its shoulders struck down towards another.

(Did the Owl-Bear eat everyone in House Aleanrae or something? Oh bother... Well, I guess I'll give it a run.)

Tathdorl couldn't help but wonder what was taking the Qu'ellar so long to arrive. Perhaps they were even worse than they had previously been thought... However, as he made his way towards the exit, a loud hooting growl drew his attention. He heard screams of soldiers from above, and instantly snapped into action; he sprinted towards the door, climbing the ladder rapidly. He cautiously pushed open the trapdoor and glanced around just fast enough to register and duck the flying body parts. When he peered up again, it appeared that some sort of monster was attacking the House. His eyes narrowed as he tried to pick out its form, but it was difficult. Fortunately, the beast's hooting roar gave it away: an Owl-Bear! Tathdorl watched as it mangled yet another soldier, and as it tore into the screaming man, Tath drew his hand-crossbow. He aimed low at the head, trying to find the beast's throat, but its feathery noggin blocked his view. Instead, he simply aimed at its eye and fired; at this close range, the bolt would probably hit something, if not the eye.
