Hmm, my current project was inspired by the fairy tale it's based on. It's not exactly a retelling, but it was definitely influenced by Snow White.
Usually I get inspired by really weird, random information. It's why I read nonfiction when I can. For example, I was reading a book about female criminals being shipped out of England, and took a lot of notes on the various kinds of crimes that were committed. Sometimes I'll learn something crazy and it'll never go anywhere, sometimes it will be a tiny detail, and sometimes it triggers a bigger idea. smile

Haha, I'm kinda embarrassed to say it, but I got my original inspiration came from Eragon, followed by a lot of Avatar: The Last Airbender and some Danny Phantom. redface sweatdrop
After all that, I started writing, basing the characters off of my friends, then after a VERY basic outline, I sent it to the friends in the story. And, well, the rest is my history - Long and boring xd
But yea, that's where I got it. My newer book "The King Among Thieves" was taken from my imagination going really far off of something really basic - Watching two people walk out of a store while I was taking out the trash. Don't ask - I don't even know.
Just goes to show - inspiration can come from pretty much anywhere!

My novel series was inspired by the movie Howl's Moving Castle and the rock band Aerosmith.
My short story The Vampire next Door was inspired by the movie Fright Night and my desire to prove that not all vampire romances are crap, lol.
My short story Slave to the Crown was a contest entry with a prompt of "Who could ever love the goblin king?"
My novel Breach was inspired by an episode of Law & Order: SVU where one of the characters had sexsomnia.
I get a lot of inspiration from movies and TV, although I have had some really strange ideas come out of nowhere.

Haha I was inspired by the Circus if you haven't already guessed. Other than that, I have been hugely inspired by Greek Mythology!

My current novel was inspired by this gorgeous stately home near where I live. Chatsworth House. It's where they filmed a lot of Pride and Prejudice? =D I heard that in WWII they used rooms of the house as dormitories for girls who were unsafe being schooled in the city. Plus, the idea of sleeping beauty. Odd combination, I know, but it kind of works out. I think.
I get a lot of inspiration from historical events, I've noticed, and the usual films, music and TV. And other books. And long walks. A lot of things inspire me. =P

The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton things in general, folklore, classic horror, and Batman tend to be my biggest inspiration.
My story is its own thing, but I have used dark themes, folklore basis, and a little inspiration from some of the characters in the above for my works.

thomlina you write a lot are any of these published? biggrin That's only a few of the recent ones, and yes, some of them have been published. The first book of my novel series is available in paperback, with the second book coming out later this year. Slave to the Crown is the #2 bestselling e-book at Shadowfire Press, and The Vampire Next Door will be released as an e-book next week. I also have two more e-books, Unspoken, which was inspired by another contest about hunter/hunted romances, and Faerie Christmas, which was inspired by a call for Christmas-themed stories from my e-publisher.

Sometimes real life events may spark an idea or two for a story. I may also be inspired by weather, school, or a dream. My dreams can be really "interesting" sometimes, and sometimes I have the urge to write about some of the events that took place in it. I may also be inspired by art, my personal doodles, and sometimes music.

I was inspired by my friend's fish Arthur, he was a white koi that lives in their pond and I used to watch him swim. All of a sudden, BAM, an idea... which honestly has nothing do with fish anymore.

It's kind of weird, but I'll tell you. Apart from being a not famous author, I also spend a lot of time drawing. Each piece of art has its own story, and that's where I get it.

For my current novel, I was inspired by music, in a way. It was more the earphones than the actual music that inspired my idea, I guess...
As for random ideas that I may or may not write, I get inspiration from, well... everywhere. The random things that people say or do sometimes give me cool ideas. Sometimes I dream things that are pretty interesting, too, but when I look them over, they turn out to be pretty stupid. I think many of us have had that feeling before, haha.
