Name: Rathan Age: 16 Gender: Male Sexual Orientation: Bisexual Craft: n/a Rank: Candidate
History: Rathan comes from a rather large extended family who founded a runnerbeast-breeding Cothold close to Moon Bay Hold. Though it started small, it's gotten rather large in recent years. Aside from the cave system that makes up most of the living space, his family uses much of the nearby plains - allowing the runnerbeasts they breed and raise to roam freely over the land for most of the year. The only exception is during breeding season when mares are brought into paddocks and selectively bred to certain stallions. Many of the runnerbeasts bought and ridden by local Lord Holders and their immediate family are bred by Rathan's family.
Because of this, Rathan's family is quite rich. Growing up, Rathan had to do very little hard work - at most, chores such as cleaning his room or helping to tidy up after dinner. For other things, there are extended members of the family who function as servants.
All of his life, Rathan has been around runnerbeasts. His father, though head of the operations, always liked to keep a personal hand in the goings-on of the hold - and tried to instill in his children the same desire. Rathan, the oldest of two, has been taught just about everything there is to know about runnerbeasts and the breeding and raising of them. However, the only thing he cares about personally is end results. He'd rather not mess with all the details in between. His sister, on the other hand, loves all aspects of the job. Rathan can, and does, care for his own personal runnerbeast, but that's about as much actual work as he's willing to do.
When Rathan was sixteen, he was Searched while out riding his runner around the fields - something which put the beast into a panic and made him rather short and snippy with the Rider who found him. He actually tried to refuse to ride back to the Weyr at first - but other members of the hold showed up then, which made him not want to 'lose face' by refusing. Instead, he insisted upon packing far too many things to bring along, just to make things more difficult for the Rider. In the end, he had to leave most of his stuff behind anyway, but to his own mind, he paid the Rider back for the trouble he'd caused by showing up in the manner than he had.
Rathan didn't Impress in the Hatching that he was Searched for but, he decided to stay 'for a while' and stand for other clutches until he got tired of it. After all, he liked the prestige of being in the head family of a runnerbeast breeders... so, all the better to be a Dragonrider, right?
Appearance: Rathan is the type of guy that a lot of girls (and some guys) might tend to swoon over. With dark hair and blue-green eyes, he has the look of one who's almost always well-groomed - handsome. His hair falls to just below his shoulders, and part of it is usually pulled back from his forehead, leaving the rest to hang down around his face - framing slightly tanned skin. Standing at 6'1", Rathan is thin, but there's a wiry sort of strength to him. His hands have long, elegant fingers and his bone structure overall seems to be somewhat 'delicate', though he is most definitely male.
Personality: Though his father was a bit disappointed in Rathan's lack of work ethic, he didn't really have a lot of time to do something about it, so Rathan comes off as a generally lazy person. If there's work to do, he'll start the task well enough but then he's likely to get bored and not finish, or try to shove off whatever parts he doesn't want to do onto someone else. However, if something is important enough to him (such as caring for his own runner) he'll work at whatever it is until the task is not only done - but likely done better than anyone expected him to do.
Thanks to growing up in a well-to-do family, Rathan is not used to hard work, or doing without things that he considers everyday comforts. When asked to share a room with someone else, for example, he'd be likely to argue against it until he was made to see that was just the way it was and it wasn't going to change just for him. He can be extremely stubborn when he's trying to get his way - going round and round in circular arguments and probably driving whoever he's arguing with to frustration, or anger.
He isn't rude to those he considers to be ... not as important as he is, but he is likely to not pay as much attention to them. If someone of a 'lower class' was talking in a group, for example, he'd be unlikely to listen unless he was prodded to do so. For himself, he tends to hang back in groups of people and follow whoever the most interesting person is. If that person was one he considered 'lower class', it would probably elevate them in his eyes - but they still wouldn't be as high up as he was.
To those he considers close friends, Rathan is extremely loyal and protective. Were someone else to do something that hurt a friend of his he would do anything at his disposal to comfort that friend - and then go after the attacker. Not physically, however... he's more devious than that. If the hurt was unintentional, he would likely hunt down the person and give them a good talking-to, letting them know exactly what they did and making sure they wouldn't do it again. If the hurt was something intentional, he would use whatever tools he had to make the person's social life a living hell, or discredit them with those in power.

Just one small thing and you're good to go! <3
- Even if he'd been allowed to travel across land - which would be completely illogical, even if he wanted to bring his things - he wouldn't be allowed to keep his runnerbeast at the Weyr unless he intended for it to go to the herdbeast pens. Neither of the two mountain Weyrs have the resources to support people's "pets", not to mention if he got a dragon it would be a full-time job. It just doesn't make any sense for him to refuse a ride on dragonback, and then show up late at the Weyr, thus missing the Hatching. I can't say anyone would take him seriously. XD
