~JSSDF Military Special Task Force Headquarters: Embryon Complex~

Located on the opposite edge of town from the Kirijo Dormitory, the Yasoinaba Station, and the Amagi Inn, the JSSDF has reopened an old military station once used to train and house troops before the facility was abandoned in part of a post-WWII effort to eliminate military presence and reduce internal military budget costs. Used occasionally as a temporary residence for troops in the area, it was recently remodeled and updated to meet modern health and safety standards.

The Facility now acts as Headquarters to Embryon, the Special Task Force assigned to shut down Inaba. Here, strategies are made for maintaining the lockdown, lockdown resources, and for eliminating the threats within the town borders. Barracks and training grounds can be found adjacent to the 1-story Headquarter Building [in which the Lord General and his Captains have offices], where rank and file members of Embryon will rest and train on a regular basis.

When detaining suspects thought to be involved with the supernatural incidents in Inaba, there is a special detention facility in the back of the complex [though it is has not received the same modern upgrades as the rest of the buildings, and can be considered downright cruel and inhospitable]. All decisions and paperwork generally runs through the Headquarters building, though, and reports are made to the Lord General inside.

When receiving a promotion or commendation, one will usually be called into the Lord General's office after a successful mission to receive [Mantra Cores].

Ria stared up at the nameplate that had been stuck on her office door by somebody.

No Matter What Enemy, No Matter What Ally
Mowing Everything Down With Maximum Destructive Power
The 'White Devil' of the Embryon
Captain Ria
~Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here~

"Oh, dear, they're calling me that even here?" the young woman asked, chuckling awkwardly as she walked into her new office. Well, it was hard to stop rumors once they got going, she supposed... nobody seemed to even remember her old nickname 'Ace of Aces'.

Lord General of Embryon - Balmung of the Azure Sky

Not long after the news broadcast the sound of a vehicle humming outside the Headquarters of the Building rumbled quietly through the corridors; a door opened and closed, followed shortly thereafter by the sound of the front door opening and closing to the main Embryon building. In the corridor steady footfalls sounded as heavy boots clanked against the ground, leading him to the office furthest in the back of the building. There stood a door, the front of which held a simple message for those who sought an audience with the man inside. 'Even angels, when forced out of heaven, will become demons,' it read, a few inches below the nameplate identifying the leader of this unique military defense force, 'Lord General of Embryon: Balmung of the Azure Sky' The office door opened smoothly as a gloved hand brushed it aside, stepping into the room with a purposeful stride and in full regalia. His hair was snow white and wild, silver armor plated over his uniform with a regal, fluffy white neck line. But the most striking features about him were the large sword that he carried and a pair of massive, white wings...unique amongst all those blessed with the power Atma...which stood as a testament to his rank and power. Stern eyes bore down on the room as he scanned for what he was searching for, stopping when they rested upon the microphone which operated the building's PA System. Taking it in his hands, he squeezed the button and spoke in a loud, deep, and clear voice.

"Attention all Embryon Captains present; report to my office immediately. This is an order from the Lord General," the announcement came, sounding through every corner of the building, before he released the button and set the mic back down on the desk. Taking a breath at that, the man maneuvered his way around the desk and took a seat in his chair [specially designed so as not to be discomforting with his unique back situation]. There, he rested his chin in his palm and watched the door, waiting for his officers to follow him in.

It wasn't very long after the announcement that the door to his office clicked open and Captain Ria stepped inside, saluting properly before moving into a waiting position in front of his desk. "Captain Ria, reporting to the Lord General." she said. The call for the Embryon had come fairly suddenly, and unfortunately, quite a few things (including personnel) hadn't yet arrived... but if nothing else, Balmung had at least one of his stronger subordinates available, one of the few users of Atma who had mastered their power and lived to talk about it. The Embryon was known for having a fairly high casualty rate, but the inevitable result of that was that the people who managed to avoid getting killed were very good at what they did. And some even more than others, as evidenced by the amazing skill of Lord Balmung.

Lord General of Embryon - Balmung of the Azure Sky

Embryon wasn't always the most organized or uptight group that you would find in the military, but they were prompt, relentless, and absolutely willing to do whatever it took to finish a mission, even if it meant sacrificing their lives for the greater good. Members of their group all tended to have their own quirks, sometimes as a result of their Atma powers' properties, sometimes simply because they were quirky people. And one of the things that made Balmung a good leader was his acceptance of all different sorts of people under his command, his tolerance of their unique qualities and tics, and his ability to get the most out of each person for as long as they survived in their group. One thing held true for nearly all members of their group, particularly those who lasted long enough to rise to the upper ranks of Embryon...and that was respect for their leader, his authority, or at the very least, his orders. And that meant punctuality when he called...as displayed by the arrival of Ria, one of his most trusted and certainly most powerful Captains. Nodding once she shut the door behind her, he waited a few minutes for more before sighing and realizing they weren't coming. Obviously, the JSSDF hadn't seen fit to issue them more personnel just yet, though he imagined that there were at least a few more coming. The situation here had all the makings of a real hairy sortie; he only hoped that wasn't the case.

"Is this all that they've sent us?" the senior officer asked with a near-imperceptible shake of his head, returning Ria's salute without breaking eye contact. Of course, if this was all that was issued to them, then they would just have to find a way to get the job done between the two of them...that was the mindset of Embryon. And besides, between the two of them, they had a lot of experience and firepower. "At ease, Captain. Very well, then. Let's begin," Balmung began, his deep voice carrying an air of authority and strength, as always, "I've made the first move by appearing on the news tonight. Now both the citizens and our enemies should be aware of my presence...but I'm the only face they know. That means all other available personnel are free to begin regular patrols of the city, starting tomorrow morning at 0600." At that the General took a moment to pause, allowing his subordinate to make any suggestions, comments, or ask any questions with regard to the situation thus far. For all his authority, Balmung wasn't opposed to taking suggestions from and working closely with his Captains and subordinates if he trusted them, and they tended to have valuable input. And often enough, Ria was both of those when under his direct command in an operation. An extremely valuable asset in getting the job done quickly and efficiently, in his experience.

"Understood, sir." Ria said crisply, moving into a position with her arms clasped firmly behind her back as Lord Balmung motioned for her to be at ease. "I took the liberty of having my staff gather what information they could." It went unspoken by her that the situation itself was rather serious. The fact was, the Embryon just didn't move out for every minor incident that was reported, at least not on this scale; it was one thing to send an operative or two, another issue entirely to go to the expense of seting up a headquarters, even a temporary one... much less renovate an existing structure to suit their often-specific requirements. "It may have already been reported to you, sir, but my subordinates have reported that the Yatagarasu is very active in this area, having recently located several of their best to this town." Unsaid detail number 1: The Yatagarasu's best, the Four Great Summoners of the Kuzunoha, were not weak. Much like the Embryon, they didn't usually move out for the small stuff. Lesser operatives did; that was why weaker people were retained in such groups in the first place. Unsaid detail number 2: The Yatagarasu often danced to its own tune, and if its agents decided that they were at odds with the Embryon, a skirmish might do more than draw blood. It was almost always trouble when the Yatagarasu had operatives in the same place the Embryon did. If the information was accurate (and Ria believed it was; her staff didn't pass things on if they doubted its authenticity, not on something of this level of seriousness), and Raidou Kuzunoha herself was in the town... any of the Kuzunoha were major trouble, but their de facto leader was the Yatagarasu's top agent for a reason... she was very, very good at what she did.

While Ria ultimately believed that in a one-on-one fight (or even one-on-three, considering how Devil Summoners fought) the Lord General would win against the Kuzunoha, she was somewhat less certain about her own chances... and that was not something she often felt. Captain Ria held more than a little rank in the Embryon, an organization that was big on survial of the fittest, but even so she doubted anyone but their leader would be able to keep things under control if the Yatagarasu's top agent made trouble for them. When you lived with the Embryon, you eventually developed something of an intuition for who the most dangerous enemies were, and the Kuzunoha girl was most definitely dangerous. If the Kuzunoha actually asked for support in a fight from her only peers in the organization she served, their combined might would hit like the apocalypse itself. Even if the Embryon triumphed in a situation like that, it wouldn't be without heavy casualties, maybe enough to cripple their operations for quite some time. For all Lord Balmung's great power, Ria wasn't totally sure he could fight all four of the Great Summoners at the same time without some serious aid from herself and the other Captains in the Embryon; that wasn't a panicked assessment, but a reasoned one, based on the history of that group and the admittedly impressive things they had done. It did not pay to underestimate those who might become your enemies; that was a good way to get yourself killed, especially in the Embryon. The information was clear enough, and the Lord General would probably understand without her having to say another word. This town was a hotbed of spiritual activity, ready to explode at the slightest spark. Ideally, they would be able to quickly track down the troublemakers, bring them in, and end the threat... before somebody did something stupid and started a small war. The Yatagarasu didn't like the Embryon to start with, nor did the Embryon like the Yatagarasu, and the other group wasn't going to be at all happy about some of the Embryon's most powerful members showing up in the town. The Crows had always had issues with territory. And it wasn't like the Embryon would tread delicately to avoid offending them, either. Summed up, they needed to be prepared for the worst to happen, because the Embryon, whatever else could be said about it, was a group that got the job done. Whoever stood in their way, and whatever casualties they took, they didn't accept failure. "I intend to meet with one of them tomorrow morning, sir. I believe we could take out the Yatagarasu's agents if necessary, but it would take both time and resources... and if the Kuzunoha are here in the first place, it's serious enough that we shouldn't be splitting our focus. So long as they do not interfere with out misson, I believe it would be best to not seek unnecessary confrontation." Mostly saying what Balmung likely already knew, of course, but there were the records to think of. And, as always, if Balmung asked her to change her plans, she would. She more than respected his authority in such manners.

Lord General of Embryon - Balmung of the Azure Sky

Listening to Ria's appraisal of the situation, the white-haired General felt his serious expression curl into something a bit more dire; the Yatagarasu...they had always been a pain in the neck to their group, butting in at their leisure and enforcing their own brand of justice. What was particularly irksome about them was the fact that they were so casual about dealing with demons. The Lord General, and Embryon as a whole, had a much less forgiving stance on such things, which made their ultimate goals somewhat incompatible and lead to conflicts. And if the Kuzunoha were here on a mission of this caliber, it was almost a given that their were going to be conflicts. "The Yatagarasu...those crows should know to back down now that we're on the case. But they won't. This case is too big for them to just bow out gracefully," he mused, folding his hands beneath his chin and leaning forward on the desk, "very well. I want you to go ahead with your plan to talk to them, but only you. The last thing we need is to lose a team of Ensigns to Raidou Kuzunoha if things get messy. You I can at least trust to escape in an unfavorable turn." It was really the only smart way to proceed in this situation, and he was in agreement with Ria on the point that the Kuzunoha would need to be confronted. It was easy to assume that things were going to become violent, but if there was any way to avoid a direct confrontation with a large contingent of Devil Summoners, it would have been irresponsible of him not to at least explore the possibility. And Ria was probably the only person in the group better at negotiation than he was...in that she not only knew to stick to protocol and enforce the position of their group, but she also had a more human touch than he did. Balmung, for his part, was a warrior...skilled in moderation, for sure...but strategies and the actual battle was his strength. He made no bones about that.

Moving on to the rest of her report, though, he found himself considering the other suggestions his subordinate had made. True enough, it was probably dangerous to move around separate from one another in such a small area, but there was also the fact that they were a group which had the advantage of anonymity to this point...whatever level of that you could have in such a small town, anyway. "As for the patrols, I'd rather start with small reconnaissance teams as opposed to larger, more visible patrol squads. We should use the fact that they don't know our faces yet to our advantage and gain as much information as possible before we begin a serious offensive. Work contacts within the community and see if anyone can dig up anything that isn't in the reports. Tell the patrol units only to engage an enemy if they're sure they can bring them in...I don't need heroes right now, and we're not going to win the war by bringing in a couple of low-level thugs. What we really need first is more information. The more we know, the better prepared we'll be when we encounter the core of the enemy's strengths. Understood?"

"Yes, sir." Ria answered promptly. Without either overestimating herself or underestimating the Crow agent (or vice versa), Ria did believe she could at least survive a one-on-one confrontation if it became violent, or at least do so long enough to escape. It was true enough that no number of Ensigns had a chance against people like that, just at they had no realistic chance against the Lord General or herself. For a few moments, the Captain considered things again. She didn't need to question Balmung's orders; they made sense, and he was the man in charge of the group. While she would have spoken up if she saw a problem, mainly because problems often turned lethal for this particular group, the plan for investigating was sound enough. Start to work into the community, get to know names and faces, and integrate themselves into the citizens' lives. Once the people were more familiar with them, and saw them as allies instead of outsiders, they were much less likely to be bothered by patrol squads moving more openly... not to mention a few dozen times more likely to actually tell the Embryon anything they knew. The entire city watching for things was much better at locating said things than just the patrol groups, however experienced. It wasn't wise to ignore potential sources of information.

The sooner they knew exactly what they were dealing with, the better. The end result was likely to be the same no matter what; go in, capture the targets, and lock them up... if they managed to survive the assault. While the orders were usually 'Wanted: Alive or Dead', the Embryon was in the habit of making sure that criminals didn't get the chance to repeat their crimes. But it was always nice to know where to go and how many people you were going to have to fight. Even that was a little less important, though, than her general suspicion that this was a very complicated situation, more so than any of them yet knew. The mere presence of the Crows' best way out here was pretty much a guarantee that something major was happening (it might have been why the Embryon had been asked to move out in the first place, actually), and it was quite possible that the situation involved a spirit with more than some power, though she wouldn't have bet on that without solid proof first. It was well-known that the Yatagarasu dealt primarily with demons and deities, though, so if they believed something like that was here, Ria was actually inclined to take their word for it. But jumping to conclusions was bad; she'd simply ask the Crow when morning came. Having no further questions or comments of her own, Captain Ria simply waited in the formal rest position for Balmung to either continue with his instructions or dismiss her.

Lord General of Embryon - Balmung of the Azure Sky

"Good. You can go now; get ready for operations tomorrow," the Lord General nodded firmly leaning back in his chair again as he dismissed the Captain to allow her an opportunity to rest and prepare before their work truly got underway in the morning. It seemed that both of them had the sense that things weren't quite as simple as they might have appeared on the surface in this town; Kuzunoha, rumors about a supernatural "Midnight Channel", and the dossier that was given to him about a few potential threats that had made their way into this area recently were all bad signs...signs that things were going to get worse before they got better. Waiting a moment for Ria to salute and take her leave, the white-haired warrior then slid his gloved hand inside the top drawer of his desk and pulled out the files on said individuals that were rumored to be in the area. They were unusual in that two of them bore bright red stamps on the top of the file which read 'DECEASED', but in this business, one got used to dealing with the unusual. Flipping each of the three files open and spreading them out in front of him on the desk, he caught sight of a [long-haired, thin and lanky man with tattoos], a [silver-haired pretty boy with a uniquely-colored highlight], and a [large, dark-skinned man carrying a peculiarly large hammer on his shoulder]. The former and the latter were both on file as having died...one two years earlier, and one slightly more recent than that. And while the latter was known more for his strength and skill in battle, the middle of the three more known for his unpredictability and cruelty, it was the former that posed the greatest threat in Balmung's mind. He was a manipulator...a charismatic figure. If he could turn the town against them, use his considerable intelligence to weave a web of deceit against them, there was no doubt things would become much more dangerous for them, particularly during their evening patrols. That was something to watch out for.

'Takaya Sakaki...' he thought as he scanned the files, 'Leader of the Nyxist Cult...what are you doing in a place like Inaba?'

Ria saluted crisply at the dismissal and calmly walked out of Balmung's office. Many members of the Embryon, including officers, were often... unsettled... by the Lord General's presence, possibly because he was often seen as almost impossibly above them, at a pinnacle of power they couldn't seem to reach. Even the so-called Ace of Aces (or 'White Devil', as was becoming more common in the group...), who had power nobody called insignificant, knew that Balmung was a fair bit better than her. However, she wasn't unsettled at all; she'd worked with him for quite some time, more than most, and she had worked on too many missions to be bothered by his personality. A good leader needed to be thought of as exactly that, after all, and for that a certain degree of... distance... was often necessary. She was something of a corollary to that, a mother-like figure for the Embryon that people could talk to about personal issues if they so chose.

One of her aides passed her a folder with further information that had been collected, and patiently, the White Devil began to look through it. It didn't take long for her to close it with a sigh... things seemed to be just as bad as she had feared. The Embryon was most likely not going to come out of this unharmed.

Haoul yawned loudly as he picked himself up from his mattress, his hair falling into place as he did. He never was big on how he looked. If his hair pointed every which way in the morning, or if it all draped over him, he just went along with it.

Appearances weren't everything, when you could fry anyone who made a smart remark to a crisp.
Then again, he figured he probably shouldn't do that, for the sake of Embryon, and for his own status.
Making it to Captain level hadn't been a complete Joyride for him, but it hadn't exactly been hard either.

He Idly made his way out the door, as he figured he'd take in the sights of Inaba, the rural town out in nowheresville they were to investigate. There was something wrong with the place, and they were assigned to bring order back to the town.

He grinned at the thought. He loved a good fight, even if he had to keep from starting one as much as he could.
Self-control being a virtue that he was all too willing to break sometimes.
He made his way out, wondering just how the food was in this 'Inaba'

User ImageWaking up early then most Selveria cleaned up grabbing her uniform that she worn, Even with her lowly rank she was a decent fighter. She just hoped she never would have to use her full powers, althought she knew her life was constantly at stake.

Walking out of the halls she made her way around slowly patroling the halls ways of the base she was relocated to. Getting us to new locations was something she was very good at, It seemed that learning that was a major military related skil.

Even with the recent events she had been breifed on, The rural town still had a calm atmosphere to it, she knew once she started patroling out side of the base that she would have to watch for anyone that seemed like a threat.

The main doors opened, and immediately after, Captain Ria walked back into the facility, frowning slightly as she flipped through some paperwork that had been given to her. Judging from her expression, her meeting with one of the Yatagarasu's agents hadn't gone terribly well. Pausing only to tell a secretary that she was ready to give the Lord General a report on the outcome of the meeting, the Captain returned to her office, the plaque on the door somehow a little less humorous than usual. The often-happy Captain was apparently not very happy at the moment.

Mayumi was happy cooking in the kitchen she had found as she was preparing breakfast for the other Embryon members that would be slowly making their way into the dining room. Hearing someone enter, she turned her head around to see Mariko. "Ohayo Mari-chan." She greeted the younger but higher ranking girl as she let her make her way to the table and resumed her cooking.

Soon after everyone else had been returning, the door opened once again, and Haoul made his way back into the area.
His clothes and hair were....actually dry for reasons normal people couldn't fathom. He started to walk through the complex with his hands in his pockets, figuring he should head back to his quarters.
Who forgets their wallet anyways? he thought, visibly annoyed. God help anyone who decided Now was a good time to bug him.
