Biography/History: Sayuri was born on a windy day in a small town in sight of Mt. Fuji to the Fujioka family. Her family consisted of her mother, father, an older brother and a younger sister. Her family and town were all poor, but they all enjoyed life and constantly visited the nicest place in the area, the local shine. Sayuri’s life revolved around helping the head priest with his blessings, “banishing” evil spirits (as she could see ghosts) and helping her father and brother, Koryu, with the farm.
Life was simple and was pleasant in the town and everyone took part of its blessings. At the age of 19 Sayuri’s father took ill and died a month later. Her mother, in shock, neglected the crops and soon the family’s only chance of survival was to move. Sayuri’s younger sister took her leave and went to become a geisha. She was very beautiful, but vain and easily deceived and on her trap fell into a trap laid down by some young men.
A year later Koryu and Sayuri left their mother in the hands of a neighbor and left for the capital, Kyoto. Koryu had made up his mind to serve the local Lord, as a samurai while Sayuri was to serve the local priest in his business. Sayuri flourished under the priest’s teachings and soon became the head priestess. 3 years later Koryu arrived at the temple on a white horse. Sayuri greeted him warmly and after offering some tea she asked why he had come. “Sister, my lord has fallen ill! It’s no doubly due to some sort of demon! Please, sister, drive that evil from his house!” he begged her. “For all the things you’ve done for me, I’ll cure your lord. “ Sayuri replied calmly.
Later that week Sayuri and Koryu took their leave of the temple and entered the Lord’s mansion. As they came to the Lord’s room the Lord’s son approached them. “If you help my father I’ll make sure that you’ll want for nothing!” he cried. “My Lord” Sayuri said as she bowed”I’ll make sure that your father is up tomorrow.” Sayuri was true to her word and the next dawn the Lord was up and was back to managing his lands. As a gift the Lord’s son presented Sayuri with an elaborate gold and amethyst hair ornament, the first ornament of her collection. “My lady” the Lord said happily “For you good favor to me and my family please stay here at my home. Sayuri agreed to stay due to Koryu’s constant begging.
A month later the lord’s son, Sekai, surprised Sayuri by bringing her mother to the mansion. Sayuri and Koryu were ecstatic when she arrived in a richly designed purple kimono. Both Sayuri and Koryu’s loyalty to the lord had begun to blossom, just like the cherry trees, but the happiness would not last. Sayuri’s mother had fallen ill and Sayuri just couldn’t heal her. Soon her mother wasted away and died. Before she died she gave Sayuri a new hair ornament. It was a white feather with a silver chain.
Sayuri’s mother was her hero and the only person who she would die to save. Grieving, Sayuri went into denial and neglected her duties, which led to the lord becoming ill. By the time that Sayuri came back to her senses the lord was dead. The afternoon that the lord died Koryu stormed into Sayuri’s quarters and dragged her by her hair until they were outside. He blamed her for the lord’s death and told her that she would die tomorrow morning. Afterwards he had two samurai escort her back to her room, where she would have to wait till morning. Her servants tried to help her prepare for her coming doom, but she told them that she would rather talk. “It seems like only yesterday that we were playing in the local shrine, chased by Father…Where has the time gone? Before now I always cared about time, now it doesn’t matter. No, I suppose it never mattered…”
The next morning she was escorted to a garden where she was to be executed in front of the samurai and servants. Before she died she, for the first time, noticed now much she loved life. When the blow came, she was ready.
When she opened her eyes she had a chain on her chest and it was hard to move. Sayuri knew that she was dead, but she just couldn’t believe it. Deep in thought, Sayuri passed by the mansion where she had previously lived. On her was she saw a young man. “Excuse me, sir?” she asked meekly. Before she would reply again she wanted him to talk to her, but nothing happened. The man couldn’t see her or hear her. Never before had Sayuri ever felt so alone, but she had an idea. She would enter the mansion and would see what the people were doing. “Are they mourning for me or having a party?” She entered quite easily due to the fact that she was dead and went to the garden. There Sekai was sitting in a rock, crying. Shock filled Sayuri, because she had never thought that Sekai would have even noticed that she died.
Suddenly the ground shook and a blood-curdling howl pierced the air. Dread was spreading and even the oblivious samurai felt something was amiss. Soon the fear built up in Sayuri and she took flight. As she ran a monster appeared over the roof. It looked like a giant centipede with a blood red mask. Sayuri stopped running and opened her eyes wide in shock. “What is this monster!?” she thought in horror. All of a sudden the monster saw her and dashed towards her. Sayuri couldn’t move properly. Her legs refused to listen to her pleas when suddenly a young samurai in a black hakama jumped in front of the monster. “Hey girl!” he yelled to a shaking Sayuri”run for it! I’ll come and make sure your safe in a second! Just wait and I’ll take care of this beast!” “What are you doing!?” she yelled at him just as he made a giant leap onto the monster. The monster thrashed and screamed in protest, but was quickly defeated by the young boy’s sword.
Smiling, the boy ran over to Sayuri and introduced himself. “I’m Aoi Yamazaki. I’m sure your scared so I’ll explain what just happened. That monster is called a Hollow. It is basically an lost—and now evil—spirit who eats other souls. He was drawn here because of your particularly high spirit energy level. I’m a shinigami. It’s my job to cleanse these souls and to send them and ghosts to the soul society. I’m sorry ms, but its time for you to move on the soul society.” Sayuri couldn’t take this all in. It was too much. Hollows? Soul Society? How could any of what he said be true? Her entire life she believed in something more after death, but at the same time she felt that what Aoi said was true. “I suppose I’m ready to go. There is nothing left for me here.” Aoi drew his sword out and placed his kashira on her forehead. “I’ll see you later, ms.” “My name is Sayuri.” She said as a blue light enveloped her.
When she next opened her eyes she was in a small area full of other people. “Hey new girl! Make sure you get in line!!” some boy told her. After waiting in line for hours she was told that she was going to live by some “Red gate” with a family called Yamazaki. After wandering the streets for her new home a young boy approached her. “U-um excuse me miss, but I’m looking for a miss Sayuri… would you have happened to have met anyone by that name?” Sayuri stared at the boy for a moment and saw that it was no other than that shinigami, Aoi “Aoi? It that you?” “Hey! You’re my new younger sister? I just can’t believe it!” After explaining what went on to Sayuri, Aoi led her to her new home and family. “Well, hello there! I’m guessing that you’re my new daughter! Call me Mama.” said an older woman. “Aoi hasn’t looked so happy to see anyone since he met me!” Sayuri was bewildered. If Aoi explained right this older lady and he were her new family. “You look tired, Sayuri! Want to see your new room?” said Aoi. “Y-yes…that would be nice.” After a few years of living with her family of Sayuri went in search of her long dead father. After traveling for a year she finally found her father by the west gate where they made a promise to live together. Her father and her lived in relative peace until Sayuri’s riatsu attracted a hollow to her father’s isolated house. Sayuri’s father fought as hard as he could but to no avail. Sayuri watched as the hollow laughed and ate him head first, but as soon as the hollow went for Sayuri a shinigami came. “What are you doing?!” he yelled with a familiar voice. “Run for it! I have your back!” Sayuri dashed for the door and when the shinigami came back she saw that it was no other than Aoi. Aoi had saved her once before, 459 years ago. Aoi quickly killed the hollow and went over to Sayuri. “Aoi-kun, you saved my life but I couldn’t do anything to help you or even save my father…I want to become stronger so that no one else will have to suffer because of the hollows.” “Hehe…you’re just like me, younger sis! If you need any help, come talk to me. Believe it or not I’m a good teacher!” And with that she left for the academy...
