The last time we tried this, it completely flopped. This time I'll try to give a little more to discuss, rather than just telling you to discuss the whole thing. If there's anything I haven't mentioned you want to bring up, feel free, but I think we need more of a structured discussion to start with. I've just picked the verses I thought most likely to start a discussion. All quotes I use are from the NIV, unless I say otherwise.

1 Timothy 1:15
15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.

So, how many of you would say that you're the worst of sinners? I know I would.

1 Timothy 1:19b-20
Some have rejected these [faith and a good conscience] and so have shipwrecked their faith. 20Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

So, what does Paul mean by this? I'm asking 'cause I seriously don't know... :/

1 Timothy 2:11
A woman should learn in quietness and full submission

We've discussed this a lot lately. What would you say it means? Is he really saying that women shouldn't be allowed to talk at all during church? :/

1 Timothy 2:14-15
14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.15But women[Greek: "she"; could mean Eve, I guess...] will be saved[or "restored"] through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

What d'you make of this verse? It seems a little odd; women will be saved through childbearing...

1 Timothy 4:1
1The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

Anyone else think this could be a reference to Islam, among other things? Muhammad was probably visited by a demon (or he was insane), so it could be mentioning that.

1 Timothy 4:12
12Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.

Can't remember if it still is, but this used to be the Guild's verse. I just love it. Just because we're young - most of us still teenagers - doesn't mean we can't live godly lives.

1 Timothy 4:16
16Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

So what's Paul saying here? :/ Timothy will save himself and his hearers by watching his life and doctrine? Doesn't God save people? ...Don't really get this verse.

1 Timothy 6:10
10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Now, I'm not sure how Biblical it would be, but we could probably replace "money" in that verse with anything we struggle with. Maybe it'd be a good idea to do that and put it up somewhere you'll see it regularly, or somewhere you are around the house when you're most likely to sin. Like by your computer, or by your bed...

1 Timothy 6:12b
Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Make your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I'm kind of saying this more to myself than to anyone who happens to be reading this, but I guess we all need to take more of a stand at school/work/general life. Or maybe that's just me... I guess it helps to remind oneself that just giving up swearing/porn/masturbating/whatever isn't going to make an impact on non-Christians, especially if it's something private like porn or masturbation that you give up. God wants us to actively show them that we're Christians. To not just preach with our lives, but with our lips as well.

So, discuss. As I've already said, feel free to bring up anything else to do with 1 Timothy that crops into your head as well.

God bless.

NASB
1Ti 4:1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,
1Ti 4:2 by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,
1Ti 4:3 men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.
1Ti 4:4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude;
1Ti 4:5 for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.

This is something Roman Catholics should pay attention to. rolleyes

NASB
1Ti 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

This is pretty serious. Work hard for what you've got and support yourself and your family.

So, what does Paul mean by this? I'm asking 'cause I seriously don't know... :/

Because Hymenaeus and Alexander have fallen from the faith, they're given up to Satan to be punished for their unbelief.

It helps to get the meaning out of it when you quote the rest of the context:

NASB
1Ti 2:7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
1Ti 2:8 Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.
1Ti 2:9 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,
1Ti 2:10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.
1Ti 2:11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.
1Ti 2:12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.
1Ti 2:13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
1Ti 2:14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
1Ti 2:15 But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

I think it pretty much speaks for itself.

What d'you make of this verse? It seems a little odd; women will be saved through childbearing...

...if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. It helps to read the entire sentence. lol

So what's Paul saying here? :/ Timothy will save himself and his hearers by watching his life and doctrine? Doesn't God save people? ...Don't really get this verse.

Paul's saying that you're preserving yourself in good faith when you have sound doctrine. Those without sound doctrine who follow doctrines of devils damn themselves because they didn't believe in the truth, and if you preach doctrines of demons to others, you damn their souls as well so long as they don't find the truth of Christ.

Also, if we're taking requests for next week's study, how about Romans? It's full of great doctrine and lessons.

Hmm, everything you've said makes sense. Now we just need other people to actually post. :/

And yeah, but maybe just the first half of Romans next week, then the second half the week after, because sixteen chapters might be a little long to discuss in one thread. And the Bible Study threads haven't exactly been crawling with people so far anyway...
