After Esen left the kitchenware store the other day, Rica called. It was time for her to go home. On her way out of the shopping plaza and to the bus stop, there was a store... well, a store name, actually... that caught her eye. "Man and Maiden's Memories? What the hell is this place?" This was either a scrapbooking supplier, or a place catering mostly to married couples, Esen thought at first. Both were incorrect, the green-haired girl realized, when she looked in the window-front.

There were various dresses, varied in colors and styles, and an odd suit or two, on generic mannequins. This was a formal-wear store. It made Esen feel a bit wistful; for all her seriousness and lack of postive faces, like any other girl, she had emotions. Most people in middle school classified her as a nerd or geek, effectively ostracizing her from people whose goals didn't involve breaking her glasses or spirit. It was especially aggravating due to her birthday falling the day before Valentine's Day. Before she was able to finish any thoughts beyond that, she heard the bus and ran toward the stop as fast as her stitches would allow.

-----------

A few days later, Esen was back to this storefront, lacking stitches, but gaining a reason to be here: Her mother's 'encouragement.' Now, Rica Saylor is the sort who would match-make people if you gave her the opportunity to, but when her daughter spoke up about how she wished she could trust someone else enough to show them her emotions for the rest of her time, the older spoke of a school-wide ball that was rumored to come, gave Esen another $200 ("Your father probably isn't as well-versed in such matters, so here's some help," mother said), and told Esen that the entire amount was only for formalwear.

At least that would be preferable compared to Rica scouring the City for a guy her daughter might like.

Esen's expression was straight, but if you saw her, she was looking at a sign in the window...
"PRE-PROM PANDEMONIUM! 10% OFF MOST DRESSES!"
With the lack of any fine-print on the sign, Esen gave a sigh and headed inside Man and Maiden's Memories, searching for sale disclaimers and petite-sized items.

After surviving Barren Pines, Fallon was trying to get her life together. One of the best distractions from that dark part of her past was something quite typical: prom. She had heard whispers of its existence, and never the one to turn down an opportunity to get dressed up, Fallon took the rumors as fact and began dress-shopping.

Man and Maiden's Memories was the eighth store she had gone to since she found out. It was a nice enough place, despite the odd name. It carried dresses made by smaller designers, and the sale rack was quite impressive -- not that Fallon cared much for the latter. She had been in the fitting room for about thirty minutes, and when the green hair girl entered, Fallon stepped out from behind the curtain of the dressing room wearing a yellow dress. One glance in the mirror told her it would not do for prom, but that mirror brought a more interesting revelation.

Esen Quinn Saylor was standing in the doorway.

At first, Fallon feared she might have hallucinated. She whipped around in a tight circle, dress swirling around her. Esen was still there, her distinguishing hair bright as ever. Fallon's mouth fell open, and she took a moment to practice breathing. Then she lifted her eyes and took a few tentative steps in the other girl's direction. "Esen?" she said, voice low and uncertain. It was the feeling she got every time she met another Barren Pines survivor -- happiness mixed with pain. Fallon fought to maintain her smile in spite of it.

The first thing she heard when she walked into this store was her name - it was quiet, but most people's names didn't start in a 'Ess' sound, besides 'Esther,' which didn't end in an 'in' sound.
This seemed quite unusual, especially as it was her first name. If it was simply an acquaintance, she gave them her middle name, but this couldn't be, could it? As it was not, the questioner was likely one of two sorts of people:

1) It was somebody from the shop, say, a manager or owner, that her mother knew.
2) It was someone from school times of many years past, as she never was in 'regular' high school. (Of course, she had been in the now-closed-Barren Pines College, but Esen did not remember that.)

The girl walking towards her had a deep complexion with darker cinnamon-brown hair, an eye color falling somewhere between pink and purple, and was wearing a simple yellow dress that looked fresh-off-the-rack, and a bit...bright. The pleasant expression the deeper-skinned girl wore was a contrast to the quiet voice, but she looked to be around Esen's age. Either Esen didn't remember, or the questioner had a memory lasting years.

The green-haired girl's eyes narrowed behind her glasses, with a bit of a guarded posture forming. Esen was in Fallon's grade in school, though only the latter might have known this, if Esen's questioning response made it apparent:

"Hello, should I know you from somewhere?"

On the dorm listing from Barren Pines, the girl standing before her was listed as Esen Quinn Saylor. Fallon never had much interaction with her, but the school was very small and she had a knack for memorization. It made Fallon feel better to know where others lived, like she had some kind of control over it. Plus, it was pretty hard to miss a neon-green haired female. Or any female, when you were Fallon.

Despite lacking a formal introduction, Fallon knew that this was Esen Quinn Saylor. And, thanks to the list that Imogen had given her, she knew that Esen Quinn Saylor had been one of the survivors of Barren Pines who ended up in the hospital. That didn't make it any less startling to see Esen Quinn Saylor standing across the store from her.

When Esen did not share the same knowledge of who Fallon was, a displeased frown crossed the girl's full lips. First Azzo, now Esen? Great. It wasn't like popularity was crucial to Fallon, but she thought she was respected and important enough to be at least a little familiar to her fellow classmates. Bouncing back, Fallon replaced the frown with a smile and took a few steps toward the neon-haired girl. "We went to... school together," she said, struggling to find the most polite way to bring it up. After a moment, she went with the blunt response. "Barren Pines. I'm Fallon. I lived on the second floor." Beat. "I cooked for everyone." The yellow dress billowed around Fallon, but she didn't look like much of a princess. Just... mildly annoyed. Why did no one remember her!

"Hello, then, Fallon." Esen gave a quick nod to acknowledge that yes, she did see her move. However, Esen wasn't a person who changed expressions very easily from a bit of a smile to a frown to another bit of a smile. "I usually prefer being called Quinn, but you know my whole name anyway, so I won't give you my introduction." The narrowed expression changed slightly to allow for a bit of confusion. "I wonder, though - what's Barren Pines? Was this a rename of a junior high or elementary school we've gone to? What grade were you in, or I in?" A pause came from the slightly older girl, then she said something else quickly after.

"Ack, sorry for all the questions. I haven't heard of Barren Pines. I'm not even sure of what happened last year either, besides some ring I was a part of - my memory's a bit fuzzy."

Esen was intelligent, but even if she had a photographic memory, it wouldn't help her learn anything about last year. She still knew where she was, however: in the middle of a formalwear store with one hell of an odd name and a person who knew who she was, but not so much the reverse.

Fallon stared dumbly at the green-haired girl. Why didn't Esen -- or, Quinn, as it were -- remember Barren Pines? All the other students Fallon had talked to did. Sure, they all experienced the same pervasive memory loss that stole away the majority of those memories, but they hadn't forgotten the school entirely. Then again, Azzo couldn't remember Fallon. Maybe some people just experienced harsher loss than others?

A few awkward seconds passed. Fallon wasn't sure what to say. She couldn't exactly lie and say they knew each other from middle school. Fallon was in France at that time. Elementary school? Well, she had gone to school here in Destiny City, but she got in trouble so much that she hardly wanted to be associated with that. Hm. What to do? Could she lie maybe? She'd already said the girl's first name, but then the girl said that she knew her full name? Had Fallon said Esen's full name out loud? She didn't think so. Oh god, this was very confusing.

"Oh, sorry," she said at last. "I think I confused you with someone else. Is your name Esen, too? That is such a weird coincidence."

Smooth, Fallon. Very smooth.

She cleared her throat. A look of feigned surprise crossed her features. "Oh," she said, "I know where I remember you from. The, um, hospital. I was there when you were. For the situation with the... organs. That must be why I was confused." Why was Fallon mumbling like an idiot? Maybe it was because Quinn was making Fallon feel insane again. It was already terrible that her parents thought she was making it up. But someone who had been at the school too? Her stomach prickled at the thought.

Wow, awkward-awkward-awkward.

Stumbling to diffuse the tension, Fallon volunteered, "Are you looking for a prom dress too?" and then went back to wondering if she was crazy or not.

"No, it's okay, Fallon. My name's Esen Quinn Saylor. I'm a more private person, so I usually introduce myself under my middle name if I can, though the last I remembered, I'm the only one in the area that I know has such a name." Actually, it wasn't just because of privacy - it was because of bullies in the past and the sheer fact it just didn't sound 'normal' to most people's ears. She soon had an awkward pause herself. Why the heck did she believe the girl standing before her knew her name? That thought went out the window when the other cleared her throat and said she remembered Esen from the hospital.

"Wait... you were there a few weeks ago from an organ ring?" Esen was surprised, so her eyebrows lifted a little. She didn't really expect to meet others from that event so soon. "My mother told me that I was found with some other people at an abandoned mental hospital while I was at Destiny Memorial."

The last question created another odd pause with Esen, though she did manage to get an answer. "Yes. I'm going to attend the Academy soon - granted, it's on a partial scholarship, but if I can blend in with the wealthier students sometimes, it might help." Esen was friendly. It was worth noting, however, that Crystal housed a bit of financially-funded elitism - which Esen would not be very happy to run into.

Fallon half-listened and half-watched herself in the mirror while Quinn, as she wanted to be called, spoke. She didn't have anything to add that would clarify the situation, and the creeping feeling that she might actually be crazy was not exactly a welcome one. Instead, she focused on the things she felt comfortable talking about.

"I like Crystal Academy. I moved in last month, and I started classes a few weeks ago. The transition was more seamless than I expected. I know a few of the students there from," she blinked, "the hospital." Was it really possible that Quinn didn't remember anything? Wow. For a moment, Fallon felt lucky. Her memory was full of holes and laden with fuzzy images, but she still remembered the school and the friends she had met there. Several of the girls she knew ended up at Crystal Academy too.

Hoping to move the subject away from the awkward confusion at hand, Fallon crossed back to the mirror. "What do you think of this for prom? Too bright?" she asked, though she had already made up her mind that she did not like it. Fallon just wanted to steer away from the previous topic.

"Ah, so you're living there," Esen said when Fallon spoke about the fact that she was there already. "My injuries took a bit of time to heal - I just got the stitches out two days ago - so that's my delay. Though I wonder - do they have a kitchen students can use during non-school hours? Since you seem to have cooking ambitions, I thought you might know." The green-haired girl was not a cook of Fallon's caliber, but it was a necessary evil when one couldn't eat normal foods.

Then Fallon asked about the dress, which Esen looked at for a few seconds. It was a bright yellow, just like a lemon. The last thought, however, was verbalized. "I might have neon-colored hair myself, but that color is just like a lemon in that it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. It's visually jarring." No, she wasn't a fashion-conscious girl, but that color made Esen's eyes hurt when she finally took notice of it.

Adjusting the skirt of the dress in the mirror, Fallon craned her neck to look at Esen. "There are kitchens for those who live there, and we have a classroom for Home Economics that has a kitchen. Are you going to live at Crystal? Or just attend during the day? I know the kitchens are open to residents, but I'm not sure about girls who don't. There is a school cafeteria though," she said, pressing a painted nail to her lips. It was much easier to talk about her life now compared to her life then, especially when Quinn didn't even remember.

When Quinn appraised the dress, Fallon glanced back to the mirror, touching at the fabric. "Yes, I agree. It's too bright for me. I prefer a muted color palette, something with subtlety." She took a few steps toward the dressing room where the rest of her potential dresses hung. "I think I'll try on another. Are you going to start trying on too? We could give each other feed back." Of course, Fallon was really just curious to spend more time around the girl who couldn't remember the school. Perhaps there was some detail that would become obvious if they interacted further?

"At first, my parents - well, my mother, at least, she runs a dance-wear store a few blocks near the school - insisted I be a day student, after she lost me for a year. I don't even remember turning sixteen - I thought I was still fifteen." Esen was thinking about what she lost, but took her mind back to the topic at hand. "Long story short, however - we made a compromise. As long as I keep in touch on my cell phone, I'm allowed to room there. But at the very least, it's good to know that we're allowed to cook for ourselves - the cafeteria would be nice, but I wouldn't be able to touch it without issues." Esen's comment on the cafeteria came out a bit gritted. Food envy loved to live in her head for some reason.

"You could probably get away with something a bit bright if it was closer to the way you look, color-wise." Esen wasn't a racist, so she continued to explain. "For example, Fallon - if that dress was purple, or even blue or red, it would look better on you. I couldn't use too bright a scheme - I already look like a poisonous frog as it is." Her eyes looked up at her bangs, which were partially in the way, but a shake of her head moved them out of view.

It was only then that Esen took off a pair of gloves and tucked them into her peacoat's pocket. "Well, I'm here for a reason, and I hope not to almost miss the last bus back. I almost did that my last trip out here." Esen ventured into the jungle of racks, saying "We'll trade critique" before going out of sight.

Wow, Quinn had lost an entire year? Fallon had gone missing in August immediately after stepping foot on her plane to school. Her parents were under the impression that she was going to Crystal Academy all along -- and so was the school. When Fallon never showed up, they issued the usual missing persons report. Her parents had seen Taken and immediately assumed she had been sold into sex slavery. They poured money into private investigators, specialists, even psychics. And then in late December, she was back -- but part of an organ ring.

For as much confusion as Fallon had over her situation, she had even more guilt over what her parents had been through. The fact that they had been strong enough to actually return to France without her was still astounding to her. At first, her mother flatly refused to leave her again, but Fallon begged. She said that it was the one thing she wanted after everything she had been through: to go to school like she had originally intended. What could they say? They promised to pay the money to visit once a month and told Fallon that she had to call every night at the same time or they would call the police. It was a shaky compromise, but it had worked so far.

To hear that Quinn had lost more time was unfathomable to her. So surprising, in fact, that she neglected to comment on anything the girl had said that remotely touched on her memories of Barren Pines and her own period of absence.

Fallon recovered quickly, especially when Quinn started dishing fashion tips. It was all information Fallon had heard before. Truth by told, she had only tried on the yellow dress to check the cut. If she bought it, she would have it remade in plum. Plums, sages, and dusty blues made her little world go 'round. She smiled anyway. "Yes, I think I have a purple one in here. Blue too," she said, pulling back the curtain to her dressing room. "I'll throw on a new one and wait for you to grab a couple." With that, Fallon disappeared behind the curtain and began to change into her next look.

A good amount of time had passed while Esen was picking out dresses. Like Fallon, Esen was a little picky, mostly when it came to the colors she worn. Out of politeness (and time, that was always in short supply nowadays), Esen took a couple of other dresses that were labeled in her size range (she was so short and lacking in curves, she could fit into a size zero, lucky her) and brought them into an empty dressing room with a dress she put some semblance of thought into choosing.

The shade of purple of the dress ((last on right)) Esen first came out wearing would probably be Fallon-approved, as well as Esen-approved. If it didn't swallow her whole or have as many ruffles, Esen likely would have liked it more.

"I've got a dress needing to be checked," Esen spoke as she tucked the bra strap on her left shoulder from... sight. "Damn it..."

The remark was in response to what she saw on her shoulder when she looked down at it. It was the worst of her goddamn scars, exposed. It was a rather dark scar compared to those on her torso (at least she didn't pick up any midriff-barers), so it was in plain sight. She didn't even know how she got that scar, just that she was very lucky in regards to it - especially since it didn't need stitches.

Unlike those people who were obsessed with looking good, Esen knew that cocoa butter and remedies of that nature wouldn't remove a scar after its formation. For now, she tossed a part of her hair on it. Hopefully the other wouldn't notice.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 21, 2010 11:50 am

Fallon was in her next dress before Esen returned, but she lingered in her dressing room, staring at it and how it moved. Hm, much better than the last. It was a long, purple dress with silver accents. The back was appealing to Fallon. The silver pieces that crossed below the bust split low and high across the back to reveal most of her back. It was probably a bit too exposing for a 15-year-old, but Fallon would be sixteen soon. And it's not like her parents were there to tell her no.

When she heard Quinn step out of the dressing room, Fallon did too, pulling back her curtain. "I love the color," she said immediately. She glanced down at her own dress. "It appears we have similar tastes in color, actually..." Her hands smoothed down the front of her gown. The color was where the similarities mostly ended. Quinn's gown was far more ornate, and Fallon's was less traditional.

Fallon had her own opinion of Quinn's dress, but she didn't want to be rude. "What do you think of your gown?" she asked, still eying hers in the three-way mirror. She didn't notice the girl's scar.

Esen was able to answer that question about the dress pretty quickly:

"Even if I liked the design - well, everything looks better on the rack than on the wearer, anyway - I know a children's song that fits this dress perfectly. It's much too long, and I feel like I'm being swallowed." Esen omitted the fact this was hastily grabbed based on the color. "I just think the dress fits the definition. I'm not against the color purple - I actually like little bits of it, probably because of that variety of quartz representing my birth month."

Esen was, as usual, shorter than her company. Fallon was a good six inches higher than she was. Combining that with her little frame, no wonder she felt like the Purple People Eater caught her in the form of a terribly puffy dress.

"Your dress is definitely much better," she told Fallon. The silver-on-purple looked nice. It seemed a bit plain, but if Esen had a choice only between the dress she wore and the dress Fallon donned, it was not going to be puffy and overwhelming. "I like the bodice on this dress more than the one on yours, but that's where it ends for me, because that skirt..."

Esen did not need to elaborate more on this.

"You've asked me a question, so I'll ask the same: What's your opinion of your dress?"
