"I get it," Marcus said as Layla tugged on his arm. They were standing in front of the local indoor pool. "Which is why we're standing out here, in the freezing cold, waiting for them to show up."
"We're gonna go swimming, right?"
"You're gonna go swimming," he said, sighing. "Like you've said the last ten times already. You and Tilde are going to have your little race. Even if I gotta pay to get everyone in."
"You promised!" Layla said.
"When did I promise?"
"You promised!"

"I aught to just take you home for that little stunt you just pulled!!" Down the street strode what appeared to be a six-foot drowned rat which looked like she had once been sporting a pair of pigtails. Beside her, an equally drenched young mare who seemed to be squirming her way to be free of the rat. "Brinksie needs to walk faster!" the mare stated angrily, trying to wring her wrist from the parent's hand. "I don't care HOW slow I'm walking! Don't run into the middle of the street! And stop fidgeting, you'll get an Indian burn." "Nuffin was coming!" she protested "And you didn't have to tackle me into a puddle." The expression on her face was.... humorous. As it would turn out, such a grimace was prone to contorting one's mouth into the most odd of shapes. "As if you would even know!" Roni declared, still quite miffed over the event. "You didn't even bother to look!" "Riiight. The big bad bicycle was enough to warent a pounce into a puddle." Tilde retorted, huffing as she was prone. This bickering continued as they approached the building. Before stepping foot on the lot, Roni proceeded to spruce up their appearance. No reason to look like they'd spent the night in a ditch, after all. "Maaaaaaaaaaaaa!" Tilde groaned, trying to brush off her mother's spit-smeared fingers as they rubbed at her face. "I'm going in a pool! Giant bath, lots of water!" Roni sighed in defeat and only swung her half-soaked scarf around her neck before proceeding to the front gates. "Sorry we're late."

The smallest of grins pulled at Marcus's lips as he took in the sight of them. To be honest he was starting to wonder how they lived. But he said nothing about that and nodded his hello before opening the door to let them inside.
"You were practicing ahead of time, weren't you," Layla accused Tilde as she saw how wet she was.

Roni gave a somewhat sheepish nod in return. It wasn't often she cared about the opinions of others, but in the case of her child's friend's parent, one can make an exception. Ducking her head in shame, she scurried inside, one step closer to getting warm.
"I don't need pratice!" Tilde delcaired with a thick layer of pride. "I'm gonna win with some b*****d spawn of dumb luck and natural skill!" Her shivering mother's only comment was a "Watch your language..." mumbled through what was once a scarf.

"What's a b*****d?" Layla asked her father curiously.
"Either one of your dads, no matter how you look at it," Marcus answered thoughtlessly, heading to the counter to pay their way in. He handed out plastic bracelets to everyone, putting Layla's on for her. "Now you go with Tilde and her mom to get changed, I've got to go to the guy's side, okay?"
"Into the funny suit?" Layla said. "It's easier to swim nakie."
"But you're not going to swim nakie," he told her, the conversation obviously one they'd had before. "You're going to at least wear the top."

Roni snickered a little. She hadn't really had any problem with her own child in that light, but then again, the conundrum had never presented itself before. Tilde, however was no longer paying attention. Large quantities of water was nearby, she could smell it. The only two things stopping her from lunging at the water that moment was her mother and... Well her mother again. In fact, Tilde mused, it seemed her idiot human caretaker seemed to get in the way of a lot of fun things... But that was a thought for another time. For now, she'd only need to withstand her nonsenses long enough to be set free into the chemical sloshed vat of sparkling goodness. "Alright, girls, let's go. I'm sure you both want to get into the pool as soon as possible!" Roni smiled, ushering her own trance-induced child along towards the locker room. "The sooner I can hit that jacuzzi, the better."

"Hate this thing," Layla complained as she reluctantly pulled her little girl bikini out of her bag once they were in the changing room. She shed her clothes quick enough, but took forever putting the bikini on.
It was a little tank top bikini with fruit slices as the pattern. It was glowingly bright, almost blinding. She had clearly been the one to pick the pattern. It made her look even paler.

"Me too..." Tilde hissed. "It's uncomfortable and not water-dynamic!!" "Yes well," Roni began, shedding her layers and stuffing them in one of the empty lockers, "Modesty is not a concern of most children. However, adults tend to have their own agendas; most of which involve coverings of one form or annother." "Stupid adults..." the child muttered, pulling the top half of her tankini over her head. "Stupid or not, you'd do well to listen to them" Roni mused half heartedly, exchanging her usual striped armbands for spandex bathingsuit sleeves. As much as she hated her former life, this one custom made piece of clothing just fit too well to be rid of. She ran a hand over the soft, silky fabric to rid it of wrinkles before leading the children out to the pool. Tilde was sure to pull along her friend and kept at her mother's heals. The sooner she could get at that water, the better! "Remember what I told you, Tilde. Don't run by the po--" Splash. One could suppose that 'Leaping into the pool head first' was safer then 'Running along side it with slick heals', but the look on Roni's face would have suggested otherwise.

Layla was right on her heels, but the little girl cannonballed into the pool, splashing everyone around them. As soon as she was in she pulled off her bikini bottom and put it on the poolside, much to the shock of the people around her.
Then she dived, her fins coming up out of the water for a second before disappearing underneath, and the people around them shrugged it off, understanding now. This was Gaia, after all.
Marcus came out then, his scarred up chest visible for everyone to wonder about. "Are they already in the water?" he asked Roni.

(Oh god damnit. Typed this up and hit preview, and the cookie had expired D= Hate when that happens.) "Yes..." Roni managed to say bitterly, rubbing at her temples. This child is going to be the death of me. She gave a glance at the underpant spectacle and let out a chuckle. It was a small consolation, but in this sense she counted herself fortunate. Tilde's anatomy was complete with the same ability the other child had, as it would seem, but with much more convenience. The child's switching between human and mermaid forms provided with a sort of "built in" pair of pantaloons that couldn't be removed under any circumstance. It certainly was beneficial; when it came to public indecency, anyhow. Roni turned her attention to the other adult momentarily, but quickly returned to watching over the children when she found herself blushing slightly. The scarring didn't worry her in the slightest. After all, under the unique sleeves of her wetware laid a long and painful story of her own. "They're quite spectacular, aren't they?" she said, quietly, standing beside the pool with her arms crossed. Tilde was having a grand time. The moment she had hit the water, a slick tail appeared where her legs had been. She darted back and forth between the sides of the pool, zigging and zagging between people's legs-- as unappreciative as they may have been.

"They're something, alright," Marcus said as he picked up the swimsuit bottoms and shoved them in his pocket, shaking his head. He knew that would happen, of course, so he couldn't say anything, but still...
What in the hell was he going to do when she was older?
Layla grinned, chasing after the mermaid girl, her speed almost as fast. It was a good thing, though, that she didn't have the fins that the other siren kids had, because some people would have gotten even more of a surprise than they got to begin with. This, she decided, was seriously fun!

Whizzing past everyone in the pool, Tilde weavd in and out of legs and arms. Though she couldn't hardly see the child in the splashing water, Roni was able to keep track of her child by the chorus of "Ooo!"s and "Ah!"s that worked there way from one end of the pool to the other. That is... Until the chorus stopped. Roni could barely make out a blur of teal and black hovering in the far corner. "Tilde...?" Roni whimpered, a futile effort since nothing underwater could respond anyhow. "Tilde? Tilde!!" Not heeding her own advice, she sprinted along the perimeter of the pool, reaching into the water and pulling her daughter out.
Tilde held her head tightly, biting her lip to try her hardest not to cry. As fun as it was, she had felt the other girl gaining on her. In an attempt to loose the one in second place, she had tried to swing a hard left around an infant in a floatie. Alas, she had misjudged the distance between said child and the wall. This, of course, resulted in a head on collision from which she now suffered. Her skull throbbed, her slick black ears felt crushed, it was a miracle she wasn't bleeding! She sniffed twice before trying to get out of her mother's arms. It hurt, yes, but coddeling, let alone with so many witnesses, was not her cup of tea.

Layla stopped, worried. "Are you okay?" she asked the other girl worriedly. "Should we put ice on it?"
"Let's get her to the chairs," Marcus said as he caught up with them. "I can chill her head a bit if you want, it might make it feel better." Honestly, though, he had never had to deal with someone's injuries other than his own. So strange that he could sew up half of his chest without flinching but felt like a complete idiot when a little girl hit her head.

Roni glanced around, grabbing some random woman's half-empty coke and dumping the contents into a towel. Wrapping the ice in the oversized rag, she pressed it to her daughter's head gently, coddling her as she sat in one of the numerous lounge chairs. Though Roni hadn't seemed to notice, but this was actually quite a nice facility; what with it's large plate glass ceiling and the professional lighting meant to simulate natural sunlight. Tilde was reluctant to accept the help, but the cool of the ice was amplified by both the natural and environmental wetness on her head. Her ears flattened, providing a more accessible surface for the ice. Already, the throbbing had began to ease and the swelling felt minimal. "It's okay Brinksey... Just an accident." "Be more careful... Know your surroundings before you just speed off, okay...?" Roni seemed so much..... kinder... then usual. Something about even the slightest amounts of pain brought out the natural maternal instinct-- something she had long thought didn't exist in her entire heritage, let alone have it herself. "Are you sure you're alright...?" "Just peachy." Tilde mused, the slightest bit of sarcasm being a clear sign that she was doing just fine. She reached out a hand for Layla. Not to old her, or ask for comfort.... But to point, a somewhat agressive action for someone in her state. "This doesn't mean you're winning!!"

"Yeah, yeah," Layla said, rolling her eyes in response. "We race in the ocean next time!" she said. "That way there's no walls to run into!"
"Which will have to wait until it's warmer out," Marcus said.
