xAustralian history. We've got, oh, two hundred years of white history, and for the vast majority of the people in this country, that's the only one that matters. Aboriginals (a name given to them by the Europeans -- can anyone tell me what they call themselves?.) have a rich history and culture and dying way of life, but none of that matters at all because Australia today is defined by modern culture.

Okay, where was I going with this?. Ah yes. We have no history. But as well, we have no culture. We have no idea who we are. After we threw the Aboriginal identity out the window in favour of British culture, we were left with no foundations. Times changed and we became a part of the English empire in name only. We became an independent spirit, but we still wore England on ourselves because we had nothing else. In time we latched on somewhere else. Suckled on the American teat. Or maybe like a leech, draining them of their culture, their language, their humour, their literature. What was theirs was ours. Many people in Australia know more about American history than they do Australian (because The Simpsons didn't have any specials on the Stolen Generation). But things change. Change is the only constant. So America became a villain and Australia became desperate for a new host.

China presented itself. Rudd snuggled in close, and we found someone else to copycat. All was well with the world.

Hey, you know what's a big issue in Australia?. Racism. Because those damn Sudos and Chinks and Wogs and Pakis and what-have-you come in here and they bring their culture and their beliefs and their religions and they don't respect the Australian way of life!.

          What bloody way of life?.

All we know of ourself for certain is that we give acolades to our outlaws and we drink to excess. You want to know an interesting fact about the English language?. The English language is the youngest language in the world. It's the language equivilent of a mugger. It waits in dark alleys for other languages to wander by, and then beats them up and searches their pockets for a spare thesaurus. If you have an interest in etymology, go look up the origins of some of our words. Most everything that wasn't created by Shakespeare is some bastardisation of French or German or Latin or Greek.

And now Australia. Australia is to culture what English is to language. Instead of scowling at every new idea that comes out way, burying our necks in our coats and shouting, "Bah, humbug!" at Tiny Tim, we should open out doors and let it all in. We're a cultural parasite. We latch on and we suck, and everything we are is molded by everyone else. We've got nothing original. And it's all okay as long as it's on our terms. But when a man prays five times a day to his God without our say-so, we have to run him out of town with pitchforks and flaming torches.

We're a melting pot because that's the closest thing to an identity we have. We need to open our arms and our doors to every way of life. We have to pick out the best bits, because we have that luxury, and from it we have to craft our culture. It doesn't sound that pleasant, but by taking from everyone else, we will become something totally unique. And maybe we'll have found our identity -- apart from the outlaws and the alcohol.

*hugs*
A Country's greatest resources are the younger generation and people willing to take a stand. To find themselves and and appreciate all history .
The good, the bad, and the ugly.
People divine a nation, so don't give up , Im sure more people
are starting to think like you.So create history.

YOUR LIFE.

Yeah.
That seems to be the defining point about Australia.
"It's that place where everything can kill you, right?."

Did you know that the Aboriginals weren't the original occupants of Australia either?. They immigrated here, admittedly a lot longer ago than the Europeans did. Australia as a landmass is old. It's got bones. I think that's beautiful. But we're completely unconnected from it. We've been here an eyeblink compared to everyone else. And we're only partially growing our culture from the ground, from the land. We're not defining the people here by Australia. We're trying to define Australia by its people. And the people just don't have enough substance to do that.

Today, as in the day I make this note, is Australia Day. I get to go outside and see people driving around with eight copies of the Australian flag somewhere on their car. My God, this place is full of bogans. I'm sick of everyone here having such pride over such a blank ideal. People argue about Australian culture by pointing out Aboriginal art and modern art and music, but that's not what culture is. Culture is the culmination of the facets of a society that make up the quintessential spirit of the place. Art and music, yes, but also religion, politics, fashion, cuisine, language, literature, landscape, community, lifestyle, EVERYTHING. And we've got nothing but what we've borrowed or brought in from everywhere else.

We still have the Union Jack on our flag. There is discussion about Australia becoming a republic. I wonder to myself what's going to become of us. If we're ever going to become Australians, and not just copies of a convenient world power.

He is the G.W. Bush of Aussie? If so then yes I would agree.

Edit:

Never mind, just Wiki him he's the Jack Thompson of Aussie. You need to give that man a Kala bear. Those things are cute but deadly. He'll never see it coming. 3nodding

Damn. However you could be like us Americans. Even though everyone assume we have just a single main culture. It's not true as the whole boozing apple pie eating dumb-a** terrorist stereotype doesn't apply to the majority.
As our overall culture is a mixed patchwork because the rich whites (English, Duth, Spanish, French, and some Portuguese) were retarded way back when so we can't seem to just have one united culture though we been trying. Anyway, as messed us as the US is we are better than Aussie. Plus, we don't have the whole "race" thing squared off either. I mean s**t our politicians are still talking about building a ******** wall to keep out "dem therre Mexicans" since they no speaking Enrilish. *head desk*

Point is I think every Country is ******** up and I think culture can sometimes be a good or bad thing. Seriously, look at Germany and Japan.

Yeah. America is pretty much a big mixture of a bunch of other countries. And, of course, the ones who were here first have been so beaten up that their culture is probably the least prevalent.

Yup, Jack Thompson with actual political power. I was thinking one of the above mentioned 'roid-spiders-of-death. Sure, they look deadly too, but they're vicious, and covered in ******** armor plating!

True. If you visit SF you see a few of them all homeless and drunk. I had some pretty good discussion from them. It's sad they don't really know what they are called and s**t. As mostly the Natives of Ca, AZ, Wa, and other far west states were just wiped out due to illnesses from the cowboys and s**t. Not so much found violence and since they just moved with the land (since unlike us dumb American they knew this was Earthquake State so nothing permanent should be built in or on California.) And btw yes we had a couple of earthquakes recently. I didn't feel the first one but that second one a few weeks ago I was in the car so yeah. Makes that crisis in Haiti seems close to home.

Oh and this whole 2012 thing probably could have been cleared up had the Spanish (and later Americans) not killed off the people of that culture either. Oh well live and learn I suppose. What else can we do. Like one my professors last year said culture is a living breathing thing. It changes and dies all the time.
