One of the nice things about spending nearly all his time in the infirmary was that Tofir didn't have to go to any special trouble to get what he needed to care for Shiver. The little blue firelizard was very particular about what sort of oils he would allow to touch his hide, and so far the only one Tofir had any success with at all was a ladies' perfume. As a decidedly masculine sort of guy, Tofir wasn't entirely comfortable going through the healers' stores to pull out feminine scents. He was less comfortable with the fact that the scent seemed to cling faintly to him now because of Shiv's omnipresence. At least he could be surreptitious about acquiring the oils. Which was the good thing about spending most of his time in the infirmary.
However, that didn't stop people, particularly asinine young men with insecurities that Tofir would have loved to find and exploit who thought by challenging his masculinity they could compensate for their insecurities. Part of the creed Tofir lived by was that he would never use anything he learned at Healer Hall to do deliberate harm. Which meant he couldn't ferret out their weaknesses and sore spots and jab them with hot pokers until they begged for mercy, much as he would have liked to.
And they had touched him. He wanted nothing more than to bathe and scrub himself until he was pink, but he couldn't do that any more than he could exploit their insecurities. He was still on duty. But they had touched him with their filthy hands. He felt befouled, and his mood was black. Being a candidate was a loathsome thing, and on days like today he hated it and everyone connected with it. The only good thing that had happened yet was that Shiv had actually come to his defense, which had been what finally convinced his tormentors to leave him alone.
Tofir actually growled at a passerby as he polished the harness for a runnerbeast. Usually polishing tack and harnesses was something he enjoyed because he could see the effects of his work and feel the cleanliness increasing. Now all he could think was that he was contaminating the harnesses because he had been touched by unclean people without being able to properly wash. Shiv fluttered nervously around him.

It was actually kind of a good thing that she bound herself, and wore baggy clothes, for as Yulu walked out of her room that morning she could feel the warmth that curled about her chest as if she were wearing an extra bandage. No one could tell that she had something under her shirt, not that anyone would even dare to look amongst many of the people in the Candidate barracks (some riders too), and as she turned a corner to get outside and perhaps go off to just explore for a while she felt small claws rake into her flesh as they tried to settle themselves. A wince was the only sign she gave off, otherwise she stayed silent. If anyone were to know what she was toting then no doubt there would be questions, maybe even requests, and Yulu had woken up in the mood to refuse them all.
Once outside she made her way towards the stables, thinking she might have been assigned to work there on the previous day by the Candidatemaster. Supposedly this would act as something of a punishment for her, having to lift and haul and clean out many a runnerbeast stall, but it was manual labor and Yulu actually didn't have that much trouble over it. While she didn't like doing it because it was endlessly repetitive and seemed to serve no real purpose, she let the punishment get accepted based on the fact she'd rather by up to her ankles in dung than sitting inside a kitchen peeling potatoes.
Instead of entering the area, however, Yulu stopped and quickly moved to get behind part of the area. She was still slightly visable should anyone care and go wandering during a break, but for the moment it looked as though no one was around. That didn't prevent Yulu from taking a few glances about, though when she felt everything was properly clear she let out a soft sigh and for a moment.. . .a smile appeared on her face. A very gentle smile, a very feminine smile, and Yulu placed her hand over her stomach as if she were protecting something amazing.

Tofir didn't look up from his task at the sound of someone entering the stable. He wasn't in the mood to deal with more idiots. He was almost certain that if he did have to deal with anymore, he would hit them, and then he would probably be forced to fix them up as punishment. The healer in charge had learned quickly of Tofir's distaste for body fluids and anything else that could carry contagion. He took advantage of it, using it as a punishment when he felt Tofir deserved it and putting Tofir to the task of cleaning the medical supplies, knowing his "apprentice" would make sure things were scrupulously sterile. Cleaning supplies wasn't a punishment for Tofir. Patching up people who oozed, coughed, or flaked was a punishment. So it would be best if Tofir didn't have to get in a fight and then punished.
He kept his head down and sank his bare hands into the smallish bucket of acrid soap. It stung and left his skin red and sensitive, but it helped him feel cleaner. His breath hissed in through his teeth softly as the caustic agent in the soap bit his flesh. It was a good pain, he reminded himself. Cleansing. Like when he scrubbed in the shower with an abrasive cloth. Instead of scraping the contaminants from his skin, he was burning them away. Possibly a more thorough method, but not one he wanted to make frequent use of. A person could end up with seriously damaged nerves from that, and a healer had to be sensitive.
As he was thinking this and scrubbing at a crusting of something on a harness that he really didn't want to think about he heard a soft sigh. At first he didn't think much of it, his mind occupied with the thought that the something might be relatively clean and incommunicable, but he doubted it. Things never worked out that way. To distract himself from the inherent dangers of contagion his task contained, Tofir listened for a repeat of the sigh, or some other indication that the person he'd heard entering the stable was still there.
When no follow-up came, he stood slowly and looked around. There, to his surprise, he found the boyish Yulu he'd met on two occasions, one of which was ancient history and the other had still been a relatively long time ago. He recalled that he hadn't made much of an impression on her. Not a positive one, anyway. He watched a smile spread across her face and felt acutely that he was intruding on a private moment. Fine. She was also intruding on a private moment of his. They could just ignore each other. That would work perfectly for him.
As he sank back onto his stool, his mind pointed out that Yulu had adopted the posture of a woman who knew she was pregnant. That was sort of mind-boggling. From his limited experience of her, he doubted she would ever have sex with a man, and if she did, pregnancy would probably not be something to bring out that sort of smile. So it had to be something else, and he wanted to know what it was, but as he'd already observed, if he said or did anything, he would be intruding and she would probably clam up faster than you could say "fellis juice."
Shiv whistled piercingly, and Tofir looked over at the trembling flit who hovered over the bucket of caustic soap. He shook his head and thought, No. It was interesting, the discipline required to project a thought and an idea clearly enough for Shiv to understand and act on it. Teaching the blue firelizard to come when called was an on-going process, though he seemed mostly to have the hang of it. Shiv reminded him, however, that he had a non-offensive emissary he could send to announce him before he actually approached Yulu. A definite advantage.
Taking a gamble that Shiv would understand, Tofir pictured Yulu in his mind and thought encouragingly that Shiv might like to meet her. To his surprise, the firelizard darted off, flying more or less straight to the boyish girl, whistling piercingly to announce his arrival. Once she was in sight, he hovered and then fluttered close to her protected stomach, chirruping.

Yulu's hands were softly rubbing the spot over her stomach where a small bulge had started to develop, whatever it was seemingly responding nicely to the soft touches. The look of quiet happiness on Yulu's face hadn't faded either in those brief moments, her eyes now following her lips in terms of fading from their normal stern to a feminine gentle. It was as if she wanted time to stop a bit more, before she would have to face reality, though such thoughts were interrupted by the appearance of a rather striking Blue flit.
It was his whistle that had first garnered Yulu's attention away from her moment, the bit of peace shattered quickly, and although the woman had a frown set on her lips her eyes were still rather merry. They were looking the creature up and down, wondering what all he could have been looking at as he hovered near them, though Yulu's lips parted in an expression of understanding as the beast stopped near the hand that rested over her stomach. Whatever this flit wanted, it was clearly under her shirt.
" . . . . who do you belong to?"
Yulu moved one of her free hands out and extended it towards the flit, giving it the option to either come closer and inspect her or simply to fly away. Either way she still had one had possessively against her waist, though it didn't seem like she was acting out of fear or protection. Perhaps the motion could have been read more as reassurance, for almost as soon as the Blue chirped a wince rolled over the girl's expression and her eyes shot down to the now moving lump. There would be blood on her skin, she knew this, but nothing she could not handle.
"Are you interested in seeing what I have? If you believe it to be food I am sorry to say you are mistaken. I have no food here for you should you be wild, though if you are not and are quite hungry I suggest you return to your beloved one's side. No one enjoys being lonely."

Tofir switched buckets to the non-acidic soap. The acidic stuff would wear a harness or buckle out quickly, and was only to be used sparingly on particularly stubborn bits of grime, like the ones he'd been working with. Having removed the disgusting, encrusted stuff, he could go back to polishing the leather with the usual vaguely soapy mixture that brought out its shine. As his own personal preference, he tended to mix something minty into it so that it would smell clean, but he'd been in a foul enough mood when he began his task that he'd neglected to do so, so the cleaning solution had no scent. Like dishwater. Which he hated also.
He distracted himself from the grimy feeling by listening to Yulu's exchange with Shiver. Now that she was speaking, her voice was unmistakable. She had a voice that was the envy of prepubescent young men everywhere, though anyone who had actually gone through puberty would wish for a more regular tone and a bit lower. Oh, hers was oddly low for a girl, but it wasn't anywhere near the comfortable timbre of your average baritone. Generally, hers was not, he was forced to concede a pleasant voice to listen to. It wasn't unpleasant, and it wasn't the sort that grated on his nerves, but he would not seek her out as a person to listen to tell stories.
Shiver, meanwhile, was distressed that Yulu was trying to touch him and doing an excellent impression of being an untamed firelizard because of it. He didn't like to be touched by strangers, and he only tolerated Tofir's touch because Tofir was soothing. He found contact with anyone else highly stressful. Had he understood Yulu's words, he would have agreed whole-heartedly that the best course would be to return to Tofir. But Tofir had indicated that it would be in his best interest to be over here, and so he was over here, waiting for this other person to make it worth his while.
He hissed a little as her hand got a little too close to him, but he made no move to attack her or be otherwise violent. He was almost certain there was another firelizard around somewhere. He mostly wasn't sure how he felt about other firelizards, taking it on a case-by-case basis. They weren't as bad as humans, because they rarely felt the need to handle him, but the bigger ones were to be watched out for. He didn't know why he felt this way, and he really wasn't intelligent enough to figure it out anyway. Was just made nervous by them. And by basically everyone.
Shiver warbled tremulously, hoping that his upset tone would summon Tofir to his defense. Tofir would know what to do. He would give him a save place to land and find a way for him to learn what was under the other person's shirt, whether or not it was really a firelizard. Shiv was almost certain it was. Human stomachs didn't simply move like that. At least, he sincerely hoped they didn't. That would be a new and unpleasant thing to learn about the race his person belonged to. Stomachs that moved, so that you could see what they'd eaten recently...
What if this new person ate firelizards?!
Shiver creeled in terror and darted back to Tofir to cower behind him, clinging to the back collar of his tunic and shivering so hard he seemed to be vibrating. Tofir winced. Well. He would certainly be discovered now. No doubt Yulu would have something sharp to say to him. Why hadn't he coughed to announce himself or something like that. Because he thought she might like some privacy. Or at least the illusion of it.
"Easy, Shiv," he said soothingly. He made no effort to dislodge the firelizard. He'd learned from experience he would only get scratched if he tried because the firelizard would panic. He'd just have to wait for the blue bundle of nerves to decide to let go on his own. "It's not like anyone's going to eat you."
It was really too bad Shiver's vocabulary was so limited, or else he might have been reassured.

Oh.
Yulu recognized that voice. Franath, did she ever recognize that voice. that same holier-than-thou tone that made the skin crawl, that same smug connotation that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. It seemed to be coming from close by, perhaps in the stable that she hadn't even bothered to check and see if anyone was in there, and Yulu suddenly felt her cheeks turn hot with a sensation she hadn't had in quite a while. She couldn't consider herself embarrassed of course, but none the less her cheeks did heat up pink.
"You again? What do you want now?"
She shifted slightly in her stance, her hands moving away from her stomach into a crossed position across her chest. Her expression had long since faded from the one of gentle femininity to its usual crass look of indifference, and though Yulu was trying to look unfazed the color on her cheeks would prove her different.
"If - eh, ow."
Against the flesh of her stomach something moved against, this time making a similar sound to what that strange Blue had done before. It was much weaker and a bit muffled thanks to its confines, but it certainly did not sound human in any regard. It seemed to be protesting against the sounds Yulu was making, the vibrations in her chest causing some sort of fear, and from the bottom of her shirt a small golden tail dropped down. Yulu's vocal protest had been once again cause by little claws, though she made no effort to try and pull whatever it was out.

Tofir froze in the middle of trying to crane his neck to look at Shiver and turned just his eyes to look at Yulu. His expression, for no particularly good reason except that he knew he had been eavesdropping, was like that of a child with his hand caught in the biscuit tin. He still held the harness and polishing cloth across his lap. It was probably the way Yulu looked at him like he had masterminded some sort of diabolical plot against her family. He wasn't really in the mood for dealing with whatever issues she had.
"What do I want? I want people to get over themselves and realize that no amount of posturing and pretending is going to make them any more attractive to a dragon, and that it's perfectly idiotic to piss off a healer. I want to be able to forget that I took a healer's oaths to preserve life and do no harm the next time a moron comes into the infirmary gushing blood. I want to take a long, very hot bath and get all the filth of the Weyr and its inhabitants off me before it sinks in." It felt very good to vent, even though he knew this was not the appropriate time, nor place, nor audience to do so.
Shiver, however, did not enjoy Tofir's little fit of temper. He'd never seen his human this way, and it terrified him. He kreeled miserably and clung more fiercely to Tofir's collar, his claws now digging into the skin at the back of Tofir's neck and top of his back. Tofir's face contorted into something that was very nearly a snarl at the unexpected pain. In a last burst of frustration he concluded: "And I very much want to get this damn firelizard off my collar."
His anger more or less spent, Tofir actually looked at Yulu, rather than simply looking in her direction, and noticed something very odd. In a subdued voice, he said, "Nice tail. Is that new?"

"Go ******** yourself."
Yulu's response was quickly and sharp as she kept her expression on Tofir's face, her cheeks quickly losing their tinted hue and turning back to their normal shade of health. Her eyes seemed to be snapping, were that possible, and her lips parted in a sneer before moving upwards into what looked like the beginning of a smile. It wasn't directed at the guy, far from it, but rather at the object that swished nervously between her legs.
She didn't say anything more as she simply pulled her entire shirt off, the quick motion starting a rather large, rather golden flit that clung about Yulu's waist. It let out a small shriek as it moved upwards on her body, the little claws on its feet scratching fresh wounds against other bleeding marks, and Yulu gave a wincing chuckle as the little creature took a final stand near her shoulders.
It was a rather striking looking Gold, probably fresh from her shell, and as she crooned piteously into Yulu's ear the woman dropped the shirt from her free hand and allowed both arms to move and cradle the whimpering mass. As it rolled into a better position in her arms she caught against the wrappings that donned most of Yulu's upper torso, another piteous cry escaping her mouth.
"Seems like issues with firelizards is a common event today. Yours fresh shell too?"
It was odd for her to be so casually talking to someone that she had basically just told to '******** off', but Yulu wasn't much of a history major.

Not, in fact, able to read Yulu's mind, Tofir had no choice but to assume that the hint of a smile he saw on her face somehow related to him. Not to mention he was a somewhat self-centered individual who tended to believe most things were about him. Thus he could only assume that she had told him to ******** himself in a semi-friendly sort of way. The same way he would tell his friends to perform the same action. His eyebrows twitched and then he ******** you, too," he replied without venom.
His laughter was cut off abruptly when Yulu stripped off her shirt. That...was probably the last thing he would have expected her to do. Oddly enough, considering he was a red-blooded male with the usual sort of interests in the female anatomy, his attention was not drawn to Yulu's bound breasts, but to the gold firelizard making its way up her body, leaving red scratches on her flesh that the healer in him critically said would not be fatal but should definitely be cleaned out. Firelizards ate raw meat - with the exception of finicky Shiver - and that meant their claws could have all sorts of nasty things lingering under them to cause wounds to get infected. Prudently, he didn't mention it.
"Reasonably," Tofir answered, swallowing. His healer training was finally asserting itself so that his eyes and brain wouldn't automatically say Boobies! and focus on nothing else, but it wasn't doing so as quickly as he would have liked. For the time being he kept his visual focus obviously on the golden firelizard. His eyebrows, however, were reaching toward his hairline.
"Shiver's about twelve days old and in my professional opinion a complete basket case. How old is that beauty of yours? She looks too large to be that young."
With his human relaxing, Shiver decided to brave the world and crawled onto Tofir's shoulder, shaking all over as usual. He didn't stay there, but used it as a point from which to launch himself into the air so that he could swoop closer to the gold firelizard. He wasn't much interested in whether Yulu had a shirt or not, but the gold firelizard in her arms fascinated him. He'd not yet seen a firelizard as large as her. He wasn't sure if she would be a bully, but he knew he was fast, and probably fast enough to get back to Tofir before she could do anything to him.
In the absence of a clinging firelizard, Tofir rubbed the back of his neck. It stung, but when he looked there was no blood on his fingers. Just surface scratches that hadn't even broken skin. Thank Faranth.

Wait, what? Did he just...echo her insult and make it sound friendly? Seriously?
For a moment Yulu was silent, ignoring his comments and response back, before the faint sound of what could only be describe as a snort escaped her mouth. It was followed by a rough chuckle or two, slowly turning into a full belly laugh. It was just like her to be laughing over something someone had done in seriousness, just like Yulu had laughed in Y'kar's face the first time the pair had met. Her laughter continued for a few more moments until the Gold in her arms chirruped a sound on concern, leaving it to quietly die down and for Yulu to clear her throat before speaking again.
"She's fresh from her shell, last night to be in fact. I haven't seen many other Golds in order to compare sizes so I'm not game on her being larger or smaller than average. I'd like to think she's just right, but if she's still so fresh then she's going to be growing a but more than this."
The Gold seemed to understand that she was being talked about, her head moving away from where it had been pressed against Yulu's side as though for comfort. Her eyes were swirling a beautiful hue of blue and green and she looked about, her view finally settling on the Blue that hovered close. She let out a small twitter of nerves along with a feeling of unease, though Yulu actually moved down and planted a soft kiss atop the Golden head. It was meant to be reassuring, and it seemed to work well, though Yulu ended up looking a bit stupid afterward and made a mental note to never do something like that again.
It just wasn't her character to be so loving and she knew it. Almost instantly she felt irritated, though with herself. There would be punishment yet again, though maybe not as harsh as planned.
"So that one's wild after all? Or rather, you tamed him wild?"
She had to move the conversation quickly and get that thought away from her mind. How stupid, how feminine she'd be acting!

Tofir watched Yulu's sharp expression break up and give way to full-bodied laughter. A similar effervescent feeling came up from his gut and he grinned, gratified that he'd actually managed to do something right apparently. But then, he hadn't really thought she'd meant it any other way, considering she'd been about to smile when she told him to ******** himself. Except for that tiny bit of doubt that made him wonder if she would hit him. Or punch him, rather. Hitting seemed too feminine an action for Yulu.
"Well, she's beautiful either way," Tofir said honestly. "And hopefully a great deal less neurotic than Shiv seems to be. What's her name?"
Hearing one of the names he was learning to associate with himself, Shiver turned away from Song and hovered looking over his shoulder toward his human. Was he being summoned? He cheeped a query at Tofir that in his mind went something along the lines of Did you want me for something, human whose name I can't always remember but I know is my human? It was probably better for Tofir's ego not to know that his firelizard wasn't sure what his human's name was. As it was, Tofir was pleased that Shiv recognized a nickname in addition to his full name.
He wasn't so pleased that he didn't see Yulu drop a kiss on her firelizard's head. One eyebrow dropped from the shocked expression they'd adopted when she stripped off her shirt, conveying a different sort of startled disbelief. Yulu was capable of being sweet? That was an interesting development that went hand in hand with the smile he'd seen earlier. It wasn't so surprising to learn she had a girly side, but that she'd let her guard down enough for him to see it? That was a surprise.
"I guess tamed him wild is a good way to put it. Really, he's just quirky. Doesn't like to be handled by strangers, or oiled with anything but one perfume, or eat raw meat. I'm not quite sure if I'm training him, or he's training me."

"I've named her Song, and I'm not really certain how she's going to behave. We're going to have an issue if she wants to spend all her time underneath my shirt or constantly in my hair. I enjoy affection at times, but I am not one for constant connection."
Yulu nodded at the beautiful comment, as if to take it without much protest, and she gave a head bob in Shiver's direction to indicate that she felt the same way about his blue. She may not have entirely meant it, but none the less she'd return a compliment. It seemed too rude not to do so, plus it wasn't like his flit was heinous or anything. It was actually rather cute for a blue, but such thoughts would never escape Yulu's lips so long as she were able to speak.
Song seemed to understand bits and pieces of what Yulu was thinking, her head swinging over to look again at Shiver, eyes blinking. It was the first time she had seen another that was similar to her, having known only the person who was caring for her and was so kind and gentle. Perhaps this scared other wanted to be held as well? This person was nice and liked to hold, and was so warm as well.
"Thankfully I won't be at such a loss as for what to do with this little mess thanks to my Father. He made sure that I learned all I could about all beasts they flew, be them flit or dragon."
There was a slight bitterness in how she spoke, though it seemed as if it were merely part of her natural tone. When did Yulu ever sound happy in her words?
"If you ever need help with him, don't hesitate to ask. I may still think you're an a*****e, but I'm not going to deny aid."

Tofir knew it was a stupid question, but he was curious. As far as he knew, Shiv wasn't musically inclined, but a harper he'd once spoken to said that it was possible to train firelizards to interact musically. And so he put his question to Yulu:
"Why did you choose Song? Is she...musical?"
Her return compliment to Shiv went unnoticed. Tofir already adored the skittish blue, but he wasn't particularly well-attuned to compliments directed his way. If she had said that his firelizard was stupid, ugly, or in some way inferior, they would have had a bigger problem than she and Song would have about the location thing, but she hadn't, and so he took no notice of her gesture. In light of what she was about to say, it was unfortunate, really. It might have made him more inclined to bite his tongue, or at least respond with less venom.
Shiver, however, did notice that Yulu had gestured toward him, and that was enough to send him darting back to Tofir. She'd noticed him. Maybe she wanted to eat him. Or feed him to her gold. He wasn't sure, but he wasn't taking any chances. Tofir was big, and sometimes loud, but he wouldn't let anything bad happen, Shiv was mostly convinced. He landed, trembling, on Tofir's shoulder and dug his claws in.
"That's good for you," Tofir replied. He wasn't sure what else he was expected to say. She didn't seem exactly proud of the fact that she knew what to do with a firelizard. Mostly he caught an implication that he didn't know what he was doing, or else Shiv wouldn't be neurotic. A large part of him wanted to point out that the blue had been like this practically from birth, and that while he'd indulged the blue, he hadn't abused him or given him further cause to be eccentric. Yulu's next words pretty much put that right out of his head though.
"Gee, thanks. I really appreciate your magnanimous offer of assistance and your honesty. Allow me to return the favor. If you ever want help with overcoming your gender confusion, I'll be a consummate professional and do what I can to assist you. But just for the record, I think you may be too damaged to fix. I have done nothing but try to be pleasant to you, even though you are one of the easiest marks I've ever met, and you seem determined to take offense at anything I say. Fine. Now you have something truly offensive to take issue with. Enjoy."
And because he still had work to do with the cleaning and polishing of harnesses, he couldn't exactly stalk away, so he bent his head back to his task. Ignoring her completely was the best he could manage at this point. Maybe she would do the stalking off. She'd done it the last time. He should have known better than to try to be pleasant.

Yulu's face paled.
Well no, to call it turning pale would be an understatement, for as soon as the last bit of Tofir's words about Yulu being gender confused escaped his lips she went nearly ashen. She was used to being told that she was gender confused and therefore a mess, but it had been a long time since someone had called her damaged. A very, very long time.
Damaged? I'm...damaged?
She was taken aback at how much it actually stung to hear such a phrase, having thought that by now she might have been over such a problem. It made her heart race for a moment or two inside her chest, the rapid pace seeming to agitate the Golden flit against her breast enough that it raised a pair of yellow eyes to look at Yulu's face. The young woman had also broken out into a small sweat, her cheeks glistening slightly as chills ran up her spine, and after a few moments of silence her lips parted slightly. Instead of speaking she merely exhaled a small stream of breath, one that seemed to shake as though it were racked with a silent sob.
I'm not damaged. I have come far for myself. I am just fine, not damaged.
Yulu found herself repeating a mantra that she had used many a time while in her youth, and for those first few Turns at the Healer Hall. Such words often helped her calm down at night, when the days stress would finally catch up inside her settling mind, so it didn't seem out of place for her to try and speak such things now. Tofir wasn't watching her anymore thankfully, so he did not see the troubled expression she wore on her face.
Song, however, was. She hissed over at the Blue that accompanied Tofir, a slight plea for him to perhaps convince his person to come over and look at her person. For some reason they had gotten upset at one another and the little Gold didn't understand, but she knew that she wanted this to end before her person got any more upset.

Tofir remained deliberately engrossed in his work, not even turning his peripheral vision toward Yulu to be forewarned of potential violence. If she did get violent, he had a bucket of soapy water he could throw on her. Maybe she'd melt. Not the acerbic soap. The mild kind. He didn't want to blind or otherwise mutilate her after all. Though melting didn't seem like an altogether bad idea at the moment. How was he an a*****e? Well. He could be an a*****e, he was forced to acknowledge, but he hadn't demonstrated that ability toward her. Possibly in her presence, toward others, but never toward her. His feelings were childishly hurt.
Shiver, for his part, clung to Tofir's shoulder. He could sense that his human was unhappy, but from what the gold was conveying that her human wasn't happy either. He hadn't lived enough to know why humans would say things to hurt each other and not instantly try to make it better. After all, whenever his human did something wrong that Shiver didn't like, he did whatever he could to rectify the situation as soon as Shiver made him aware there was a problem. Vomiting was an effective means of calling his attention to a problem, and his human always knew that there was a problem when he did it, unlike when he made other sounds. Humans weren't very bright sometimes.
He shyly sent a thought toward Song that he would try to make it better. It probably came across as a reassuring feeling, much like those Tofir sent to him when something was wrong. He did know, however, that if he threw up on Tofir, his human would be too distracted by the mess and an urgent need to clean himself to take proper notice of the problem at hand. With that in mind, he hopped delicately from his human's shoulder and fluttered almost gracefully to the ground. Then, with a few warning "wau wau" sounds he neatly distended the contents of his stomach a few inches from Tofir's boot and looked up at him expectantly.
Tofir groaned, recognizing the distinctive sound of Shiv preparing to vomit. He was learning that the odd little blue did that when he was particularly distressed, upset, or unhappy. As he couldn't come up with any probable cause for the first two possibilities, it had to be the third. He looked down at the blue flit and raised one eyebrow, clearly asking "What?" He was a little surprised that Shiv seemed to understand what was being asked of him and followed the firelizard's gaze when he turned his head pointedly toward Yulu and Song.
He looked up at Yulu and saw that she seemed to be in a very bad way indeed. His expression darkened from tolerant amusement with Shiv to disgust with himself. He said distinctly, "Oh, s**t."
Then he got to his feet, abandoning the harness he was cleaning and took a step toward Yulu, but no more than that. He still wouldn't put it past her to come out of her shock and be instinctively violent. If that was the effect he'd had, he honestly wouldn't blame her.
"I'm sorry," he said feelingly. "I didn't think, I just...I'm a complete a*****e. You're right. I didn't mean what I said."
