Even as Logan spoke, Ryan's attention began to wane, his eyelids growing heavier by the moment. He tried blinking it off with little success, but soon his head began to nodd as well. Sleep was what his body called for as much as the rest of him resisted, partially wanting to continue their conversation, but mostly for fear of the nightmares that would find him. Finally he succumbed to his exhaustion, head leaning back to rest on the couch one last time as the world went black.

Silver kicked his legs casually through the air as he scanned through the words. A breeze was blowing from behind him, making his hair flutter in front of his eyes, which was annoying. He was forced to lean forward so he could see the print without hair getting in the way. All in all...it wasn't as bad as it could have been. That was what he was consoling himself with, even though there had yet to be any word from anyone else. Nothing from Maren, Akina, Alluvian, Ninak, any of them. Or anyone else. Heck, not even any neighboring packs. That was, in itself, a little foreboding.
But the newspapers had stopped referring to all Immortals in general, besides Angels, they never really talked about the Angels, as demonic hellspawn, so that was good. He shook the page to even it out as he continued looking at the articles. Every single one seemed to have something to do with Immortals in some way these days.

There he was, that unmistakable scent caught in the wind. Silver was just outside the den, but behind him there was a bear, raccoons, squirrels, trees, grass, all the things that the wind had picked up on its way and... paper? The patrol was nearly done, he had been invited out on some of the easier runs with the Pack and had been astounded by them. They were militant, every action complete, agile, the pinnacle of perfection. He felt like a fool when he followed along, though he was glad he had been able to keep up... a sure sign he was holding them back. But he had a different task in his mind as he split off from the round, giving them a curt nod as he left, heading back to base. As quietly as he could manage he dashed through the trees, trying to immitate the others for their swift silence. He slowed down as he neared the treeline, caught sight of his prey, then went for it. One, two, three, and he was on top of the enterance to the den, gently butting his head against Silver's side. "Gotcha," he growled, tail wagging in delight.

Though he wasn't entirely oblivious while reading, Silver had only caught the sound of Ryan's footpads when he was on the second jump. It gave him less than a second, no time at all to think of a counter trap. If he had been actively listening, he likely would have heard him just before he got to the base of the den, but not much more before that. Ryan was good, unconsciously so, and it never ceased to surprise him. And it always made him feel ever more like he made the right choice, not that he ever doubted that.
"That you did," Silver said with a smile, folding up the paper and putting a rock on top of it. Then he grabbed the wolf head next to him, just barely able to wrap his arms around his neck, and rubbed his nose through the fur. "How was the run? You keeping us all safe out here with your vigilance?" he asked, starting to scritch the neck fur softly.

"Nah, they were just trying not to leave me behind." He answered, drawing a wry grin that disappeared as Silver's scratchings began. An affectionate growl, almost a purr rumbled from his throat, "They can speed up now, though. And without me making all that noise, they'll do better."
He sat himself down next to Silver, leaning forward and across him, neck outstretched. "The run itself was good though, I'd like to find a wide, open feild and just go. I like to feel the wind."

Starting to use both hands to scratch up and down the long neck, "Yeah, that sounds like fun. But it might be a bit dangerous. You never know if you'll come across a Slayer or human deer hunter. I bet they carry silver bullets now." Silver wouldn't have been surprised if the government wasn't manufacturing them for mass production right about now, while the church was likely turning out holy items at record speed. Ironic. The Immortals might end up saving the economy, hopefully before society crumbled.

The happy growl continued, his head drifting in towards Silver's shoulder to n** affectionately. "Probably, I'm not up for getting shot. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't deer they were hunting, either." Ryan agreed, "How's the world outside, otherwise? Any support movement going yet?"

"Locally?" Silver asked, kissing Ryan's nose gently, "I haven't seen anything. At least most of the chaos has died down. Not as many neighbors killing each other and using the pretence of thinking the other was an Immortal. The police have put it all down as regular first-degree murder, as they should. It's not like it's self-defence." The fires had done a good amount of damage to the city. It had taken the fire fighters more than a day to put them all out. By that time, a lot had put themselves out after burning down everything that could burn. Many streets, especially downtown, were all but impassable.
"As for Congress," he continued, moving his fingers to scratch underneath Ryan's chin, "They're leaning both ways, as could be expected. There's both varmint laws being drafted and equalization laws. We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out. Though it does look like it will be more favorable for us than the other races. We aren't required to kill to stay alive and aren't naturally evil. So we've got a good shot, at least."

[ ...Varmint? .__. Yo Sammity Sam eh? ] His tail crept up in beat, his head rolling back so Silver could keep scratching. "That's good, I suppose. The general consensus is that we're only really dangerous on the full moon, right? They'd probably put laws in to deal with that but... you're right. We've got a good sho-oh, right there..." The growling purr came in a little louder as he leaned against Silver, enjoying the attention completely. Naturally evil? "What are the Demons up to?"

(Heh, I took varmint laws straight out of Anita Blake. razz )
Pulling Ryan's head down into his lap so he could reach all of the areas that he personally knew felt good, like right behind the ears and underneath the very tip of the chin, Silver responded, "I'm not sure. If I guessed, I would say that most of them probably left. With all of this chaos, they couldn't have crafted a better plan if they tried. Most are likely kicking back with some popcorn and are watching the show. Just a guess though. Besides, if they stayed here, they'd have to watch their step. The city has been integrating holy water into some of the stuff they use. Any type of liquid could have some amount in it and...well, it'd be rather obvious of what they are at that point. It would be safer for them if they left." What he didn't know was what the Angels were doing. They should be working to try and keep more from dying. The question is...which side of the laws up in Congress were they on? It was a good question really.

[ xD I'd think they were Vermin laws, not Varmint... ]
Deft hands pulled him down, subjecting him to all forms of a torture that he certainly didn't mind. The growl grew louder, a rumbling in his throat more noticible as he leaned into Silver's hands. "So it's just us out here, I'd bet that the Vampires are still in the city for the most part... There isn't anything from Angels yet?" he asked, rolling onto his back, head in Silver's lap. "That's the spot..."

(Yeah, well, it was Texas that first enacted them in the series, so it's not all that surprising.)
Noting where he had just scratched, Silver brought both hands to that spot and worked it over thoroughly, memorizing it for future use. There was always future use. As he did so, he took the time to think more about the elusive Angels, the ones that had been least publicly active in general for decades. "I'm not sure what they're doing. I would guess that they are viewing a conflict between what would be right for all and their own moral codes. They could use this chaos to get laws passed that would put all other Immortals on the hunted list, saving humanity for the long-term future. Of course, that would create further panic, more lives would be lost. The other option would be for them to try and sooth things over, make the panic stop and try to get Immortals assimilated with less trouble than there needs to be. For our sakes, i'm hoping they choose the latter. And for everyone, I hope they do as well. It would save humanity far better than having us all fight each other to the death." He wanted to believe that they could assimilate peacefully, that lycanthropes and vampires could learn to live side-by-side with humanity with little trouble. But it could all just end up being a pipe dream. He wasn't sure.

Ryan was only half paying attention as Silver spoke, less conscious of his words than of his hands. A loud growl rumbled from his throat, his one paw twitching as the scratching continued. His concern for the Angels gone, Ryan instead revelled in the little slice of heaven he had unknowingly stumbled upon. Such a simple pleasure, one that he was glad Silver had the keys to.
"Angels. Ethics. Panic. Right." He managed through growling as he lay on his back, stretched out on Silver's lap, paws in the air.

Laughing at both Ryan's distraction and his ridiculous pose, Silver buried his face into Ryan's neck and wrapped his arms around him. "My silly little wolf, what would I do without you?" he asked, rubbing his cheek against Ryan's fur. So soft. And it smelled so nice, like the forest, grass misted with dew, and of Pack. And of love. Everything he could ever want in one little package. Well, not so little, though he liked to think so. He wouldn't give this up for anything in the world or even for the world itself. Was the world so very important anyway?
