Seriously, I keep buying more and more items, and I can't make anything decent out of them. I'm almost never satisfied with the items I equip. How do you guys just come up with different avatars to make? Do you start with one item and build around it? Do you pick certain colors?

Pretty much why I never get on gaia any more except to check. I get so frustrated evil

@ .@ You just gave me inspiration. Last I checked, i couldn't equip pants/skirts with the warm daisy dress. I swear we couldn't. And you are. I must go play.
My old method of combating avi block was picking a random color scheme. I worked only with the items I owned. I owned three or four items in each color so I was usually able to spread the colors evenly. Thing is... the colors were balanced, but the overall flow and shape of the avatar usually looked awful. Granted, this was years ago when we had less layers and items to work with, but the avatars still looked bad. So eventually I stopped doing that.
I pick one or two items and work around them. I might pick a hard to match item. Other times I just pick an item I like. Annndddd... usually, I work around a new item. I get most of my new items from things like the DC, sponsor quests, aquarium overseer, Events, zOMG freebies, etc. And then I challenge myself to make an outfit using the new item and my old items. Lately, I rely on EIs to break my avi block. Each time they evolve, I get a new set of poses and new challenges. I feel bad because my outfits used to be all about using only or mostly gold shop items and still looking good. I still believe that, I'm just not practicing it. EIs give me tons of neat little accessories to play with. > <
Anyway, it's not always just about buying new items at random. Are you buying new items that work with your old items? Like, buy a new teal item to work with an old elftech hat you might not have used in a while. If you're really bored, invest in a set of items in a whole new color. Well, kind of like that neat lime green color hair you have now. That didn't help you overcome avi block?

When I buy items, I usually pick an item and then buy the whole set. I don't really like buying only certain items. I almost never buy items for a specific outfit. I like the challenge of just sticking with what I have in my inventory. And I figure, with 5 pages of items, I have to have items that will work.
I buy new hair once every couple of months. I try to make sure that I've made at least one avatar that I really like with that hair. Lately I've been picking hair in more colorful, non-natural colors. I used to always pick black or white because it's easy. I usually don't care if the hair color matches though. I'm still working on the green on.
I've tried doing that color combo thing, and it always fails. I don't know why. I need to pick the items first, then go with whatever colors it has. I've tried basing an avatar off of one item, but that always fails too. What usually happens is I mess around with items until I find two items that I think look really cool together. (In this case, the skirt and the dress) And I build off of that. It's hard to get started, though.
And for some reason I can never make an avatar based off of an MC or EI. I like, need to start with commons. I find it a lot easier that way. The MCs/EIs always come last.. if at all.

XD Ahh~ I'm the same way. I never buy items for a specific outfit. If I don't have an item, I make do without it. ... It kind of adds to my challenge factor. XD; That and I don't have the gold to run off and buy everything I need to make each one of my outfits perfect.
Hmmm... yeah, buying sets doesn't necessarily mean that you'd have the right items to work with each other. PX But then again, that doesn't matter once you have five pages. XD If you don't have items that work, then that's just crazy.
Very fun. I used to delete and recreate my hair to play with the starter styles. :3 I'm stingy though. XD Now that I have a salon style, I'd rather use wigs than buy new hair. ...At least until I finally grow tired of this hairstyle.
Basing an outfit off of one item fails too? Do you pick items with multiple colors like the superstripe shirts or Pride of Hera? I used to be that way... my base was always in commons. I'd use commons first, then add MCs or EIs for little details. It's a very good way to go, I think. Problem is, I got to a point of avatar block like you have. I exhausted all the fun combos I could think of with my commons. Hopping over to EIs/MCs first is what helped me. It's not the best way to go though. By the time my EI is unlocked, I'm pretty much bored of all the poses. I've already made all the outfits I can with them. The only thing that saves me is that I might have a new EI (or other items) that would pair well with the old poses that I'm bored of. It's not a good cycle. I usually have to have a new item in my invo for me to come up with a new outfit. I can come up with other outfit ideas without new items, but it's just like what you do. I just keep clicking random items until I see a combo that works. And lately, that means that I click random EI poses until I find a combo that looks good.

Honestly, I usually have a TekTek contest. With the avatars I like, I edit them slightly to fit what I like. Then, I add on once I see a new item or w/e.

^ That's the avi that led me to my current one. Ruuna Neko made that on November 14th. ._. I've had my avi for a long time. xD

Usually I lurk around the forums or search around on previously made TekTeks of other people and I see an item combination or colour scheme I like. Then I go back to TekTek to recreate that avatar, but change a few things. Then I find myself changing it so much it's a whole new avatar, give or take an item I liked from my inspiration.
But these days since I'm getting to know the items better I pick one or two of my favourite items then build around it. razz

Lately... I pick an evo pose, and try and make an outfit around it. Like at the moment.. it was this cape thingy. It often doesn't work :/ But I'm sooo behind on items.. and I've just kinda lost enthusiasm. And this way means I don't have to buy much, and EIs always have something new for me to mess with.

I've been having this problem lately. I feel as though I'm essentially making the same avatars over and over. I need something challenging. >.<

It always seems like we're reusing the same avatars (especially when matching). Mostly it's because of the use of the same items to distribute a certain color/shade along the avatar.
The choice of a random item or pose, especially with an awkward shade to try to match is a good idea to keep the creative juices flowing. A while ago I was playing around with the Jinxi's weird shades and some pretty different avatars came out.
A currently evolving item gives you new and limited poses to use every few weeks. I use to love creating new outfits with each new evolution of my Urn when it was evolving. Lately I have only been buying later-gen EIs so it's not as exciting as the new thing but now I'm sure what will be coming along.
Also, an interesting facial expression also makes the avatar seem much more unique and can make an old look seem renovated.
Suggestion: Try a themed avatar (pirate, musician, royalty, robot, etc...) or a new style (monotone, non-matching, etc...)
