The night had passed swiftly since Maponus and Shylah had led the small group of survivors to their new home. It was the first time where he truly felt like sleeping, this place brought such a peace to him. He laid close to Shylah that night dreaming of the long journey they had made and what this new home would mean to them in the future. It would be a fresh start for the herd, though they were without leaders, they had their beliefs and that in itself would see them through. As morning came up Maponus lifted his head, looking out upon the grove and their new home.

The other horses were beginning to rise as well. They all looked refreshed, much like how Maponus and Shylah had been after spending a night here. His eyes settled upon Alaunus, the oldest of the elders that remained from the old herd. With a subtle motion of his head he summoned Maponus to his side. Rising to his feet Maponus made his way over to where the elder stood, bowing his head in respect.

Alaunus stood watching Maponus approach. He had heard the stories from Divone of the young stallions strength in bringing the young colt Ikran back to the herd in the most violent of storms and how not only he but Shylah as well had acquired an Owl companion in their travels. The Spirits smiled down upon these two in so many ways. Once the younger stallion came to a stop Alaunus spoke.

"I remember the first time I stepped within the Sacred Grove. I was much younger than you are now. That power I felt that day is much like what I feel within this new grove." He began to slowly walk, motioning for Maponus to follow. "From that day on I learned the ways of our ancestors and in that time I have seen many things, though rarely have I seen a horse with your strength and stamina. You did not seem to tire at all during out long journey."

Maponus moved along with Alaunus listened carefully to the Grove Keepers words. It was a rare occasion to just sit and talk with an elder when one did not hold a similar position, Maponus felt honored by this. "I had a duty to the herd, to the Spirits. Knowing that time was short I found the strength within to continue on even when I should not have been able to."

"Indeed, it was a gift from the Spirits to have done that." The older stallion came to a stop, looking about at the other horses as they began to move around the grove, inspecting their new home. "As is this grove you have brought us to. The herd may have dwindled down to only a few, but our strength lies within our beliefs." He shifted his weight around, and then caught sight of Divone off in the distance. "There is much more for you do and I know you are ready for it. Excuse me I must got confer with the others about an important matter. We will talk again soon." Turning the old stallion walked away towards where Divone and Duska stood.

Maponus was still thinking about what Alaunus had said as the old grey stallion walked away leaving Maponus' standing there near the middle of the grove. His eyes settled upon the large oak tree that stood not far away, it was quite old and yet stood strong within the middle of the grove. Letting out a deep sigh of content he made his way back to where Shylah was, she should be waking soon and he wanted to be there.

Even the peace that came with being in a new home didn't seem to wash away all of Shylah's weariness and so while the chocolate mare typically awoke much earlier she had slumbered away for quite a while longer. Although weather this peaceful sleep had more to do with how tired she was, or with the unburdened mind he had now that they had finally delivered everyone to the grove. Now that it was over Shylah realized just how much stress and worry had been plaguing her mind, why it felt as thought she had never known anything else. But it was over now - for the most part anyways, there would be rebuilding to do of course but that she had always assumed would be in the hands of the elders. Her part in this escapade was over now wasn't it?

She wasn't sure what it was that finally roused her, but blinking her sleep filled eyes she managed to focus on Maponus approaching, he looked as though he'd been up for a while and had no doubt been talking with some of the others - perhaps finding out if they found the place as magical at she and Maponus did. Shaking her head slightly to clear the sleep fog from her mind Shylah gathered herself and rose to her feet, giving a brief shake to dislodge anything that might have stuck to her coat from the night and even though it was well into the morning Shylah couldn't help but yawn slightly. How on earth could she still be so very tired?

"Do not fret over it Shy, you will get past the fatigue in time" Came a low voice from the branches above the horse, Breckin's gaze turned downwards as he fluffed his feathers and shifted position on the branch.

"Yes, thank you Breckin" She responded with a warm look before turning her attention back to Maponus who was finally close enough to speak with. Knowing that he must have seen her yawning she gave hm a sheepish look "Must have worn myself out more then I thought" She told him with a slight chuckle "But I'm sure a few more night's of decent sleep will see me back to normal" She stated firmly.

Maponus smiled at Shylah as she rose and yawned. "It has been a long journey my love, it is no wonder you are still tired." Coming to a stop in front of her he gave her a soft nuzzle. Shylah did look quite tired, which Maponus found a bit off considering how refreshed they had been the first night they had spent here, but he shrugged it off. They had after all been traveling hard for more than two full moon cycles. He turned his body so that he stood beside her looking out upon the grove and all the horses as they moved around. "They all look well and seem to be adjusting to their new home quickly." A soft rustling caught his attention and he looked up to see Herne land softly on the branch beside Breckin. Maponus was still getting used to the idea that the owls were as active during the day as they were at night.

"In time she will be less tired." Herne assured Maponus. He knew that the stallion worried about his mate, though he may not always openly show it.

"Thank you Herne." Maponus said before turning back to Shylah. "Herne says you will be less tired soon." And if Herne said that Shylah would be less tired soon then Maponus would believe it. Herne had not steered them wrong yet so he doubted the owl would do it now.

Alaunus made his way slowly over to where Divone and Duska stood. There was a very important matter to attend to today that would affect every member of the old herd. They were without leaders. Coming to a stop by the other two elders a small smile crossed his maw. "Spirits smile down upon them brightly."

His head turned to look out at the young couple. They were so strong and determined to do whatever was needed to help the herd. With his gaze returning to Divone and Duska he wondered if they were ready to start the ceremony. "Are we ready to proceed?"
PostPosted: Tue Jan 19, 2010 9:55 am

"I have known something great awaited them since the pairing ceremony" Divone agreed with a slight bob of her head to the old grey stallion. She cast a fleeting glance towards the two young horses, so quietly they stood there together, would they be so calm and collected if they knew what was soon to come? She doubted so, but it was not yet time to reveal this news to the two creatures, not quite yet. "Rarely have the spirits cast such strong omens over two horses" She concluded turning her attention back to Alaunus and Duska.

"So much time we waste, sitting here speaking of things we already know" Cackled Duska, her dark ears flicking slightly in irritation as she regarded her larger companions, the feathers in her mane fluttering in the wind and the bones in her tail clacking as she snapped it to get the herds attention.

Divone chuckled slightly at Duska's ill tempered remarks - she had grown used to the mares temperamental ways in their time helping the sick and knew that even though she was a bit gruff she had the herds best interests at heart. "I take that to mean we are ready" She told Alaunus with a warm look to the other steed before turning to the rest of the herd who for the most part were looking their way curiously after Duska's call for attention. "If you would all please gather around the Oak" Divone called out to the survivors.

Shylah chuckled a bit and returned Maponus' nuzzle "Yes...Breckin told me much the same" She assured the stallion with confidence in her voice. Shylah wasn't to worried about her fatigue - Maponus had always been the stronger of the two of them, it made sense to her that he would come out of this experience in better shape then she was. All she needed was a bit more rest she told herself. Then everything would be back to normal.

Her ears pricked slightly as a loud clacking filled the area, her head swiveling to look upon the three surviving elders - from which the sound had surely come. She was not wrong she found out soon enough and cast a look towards Maponus, wondering what all the Elders would have to say - she assumed they would formally declair this their new home, perhaps ask the spirits to bless thier future and this new grove. "We should probably go over there" She told her tawny mate "would hate to be the ones suddenly holding them all up" she joked as she nodded to the quickly gathering horses.

Maponus ear swiveled at the sound as it echoed through the grove. With a small chuckle he looked at Shylah. "I don't think they would mind. After all we have been working hard to get the herd here, I think we deserve to take out time." Though he knew deep down that even now they couldn't rest, there was a meeting to attend to and when the Elders called you could not ignore them. "Come on then." He said and led the way to where the others had gathered, taking a spot in the middle of the others survivors.

Alaunus stood silently as he waited for the horses to gather. Duska's attitude towards them discussing this any further made him smile. Indeed they had spent enough time hidden away in seclusion, talking at length about what would be done when they signs were so clear. With the arrival of maponus and Shylah all the members were now present. He took a step forward and stood tall as he addressed those gathered here today.

"Our herds have suffered much in these past few moons. We have seen loved ones and friends fall, our beliefs have been pushed beyond anything we have encountered before. And now we stand together, the strongest of the old ways. The Spirits have smiled down upon us, this grove and the two who led us here." He nodded towards Maponus and Shylah. "As the only surviving Elders we have discussed at length as to what will happen now that our leaders have moved on to the Otherworld. The Spirits have made their decision, we will receive two new leaders today. These two had shown a great devotion to our ways, endured much for our future and have been blessed in so many ways one cannot begin to tell them all." His gaze settled upon the young couple standing in the middle of the gathered survivors. "Maponus and Shylah, please step forward."

Maponus stood silently beside Shylah as Alaunus addressed those who had gathered. He had expected some sort of ceremony when they had been called together, but what he hadn't expected was for the Elders to announce that the new leaders would be chosen today. Though he knew deep down that even the strongest herds required leaders, especially after something as devastating as what happened to the five herds this winter. When Alaunus asked him and Shylah to step forward his maw fell open slightly in shock. They were to be leaders. It shouldn't have come as a shock at all, they had seen in their dream walk that they would one day lead, he just hadn't expected it this soon.

With a quick glance at Shylah he stepped forward, noting that all eyes were now on them. The other horses already seemed to accept the Spirits and Elders decision. He stared at the three Elders with a shocked look on his face. No doubt Shylah had the same look upon hers, but he didn't bother to check.

Shylah listened intently as Alanus revealed the reason for the gathering - new leaders? Already? Well she supposed it made sense, the elders had had plenty of time to think things over while she and Maponus searched and no herd could function well for very long without true leaders. Even with the Elders to keep things going. When their names were called Shylah didn't register it at first, oh she heard it alright...but her mind took a few moments to actually process it fully.

When she finally did realize that yes it was indeed she and Maponus being called forth to stand in front of the Elders her face registered shock. But they were so young! and yes of course they had foreseen this in their spirit walk but Shylah had always assumed this would take place many years into the future, when they were older, more experienced.

But the Elders didn't make mistakes and Shylah pushed away the doubts within herself to step forward beside Maponus. Unlike her mate Shy kept her eyes forward as she did so, she wasn't sure if she wanted to see what the other horses thought about such a young pair being called forth. But Maponus seemed to be looking..and from the look on his face it couldn't be bad so she risked a glance and saw nothing but acceptance in the eyes of their peers.

Duska watched as the summoned two stepped forward, her eyes barely seen from beneath the heavy brush of forelock, the feathered headdress perched between her ears ruffling slightly - like a bird fluffing - as her ear's flicked with impatience. Finally...finally the two were in position and the bone's weaved into her tail clattered frightfully as she came forward. Duska was well aware that some of the younger foals feared her - and it amused her, they were right to do so she supposed for she was woven from death even as the youngsters were the embodiment of all that was life. "called early I was" The little mare muttered under her breath, far to quietly to be heard as anything other then low mumbling.

"Come on then" She ordered the two in training she'd summoned to help her. "Stop lazing about and bring them forth" She continued in her gruff and grated voice. youth these days - so slow to respond, why in her days it had been snap to and hurry when summoned. Ah..those were good days for the herd. But enough of such idle musings she told herself, there were matters to attend to, matters of great importance.

The two youth - two year olds really, too young to be more then students in the herd, had finally managed to make their way forward, one bore the brown hide of a bear - the other the tawny and grey colored hide of a lynx. It had taken Duska many days to seek out these particular hides, she had started searching for them long before the decision had been made for Maponus and Shylah to lead them. The creatures had come to her in a dream while the herd still lay in the grips of illness and Duska had answered, finding the animal corpses at the base of the mountain after being struck down by an avalanche. The treatment and preparation o the hides was a Spirit Talker tradition passed down through each generation.

Lifting her head and casting her forelock from her eyes Duska stared into the eyes of the Tawny stallion who was to be their new Astral Walker. "Maponus, strong of both heart and mind, a loyal follower of the way - birthed into the Tribe of the Sun you have none the less been looked upon favorably by Lady Moon. It is suiting that you are so loved by both the Silvered Lady of the Night and the Golden Father of the day, for you possess the stamina to serve both though their demands may be many and heavy to bear."

Giving a glance to the youth with the bear pelt the obviously somewhat rattled and nervous colt brought the pelt foreword, placing it with reverence onto Maponus' back. "Because of this the spirits have deemed bear a fitting totem for you, his weight will remind you of the burdens you will face and the strength within you to see them through." Giving the stallion one more hard stare Duska moved sideways her woven bones rattling as she did so. Her gaze settling upon Shylah.

"Shylah, ever the kind soul at outward glance you are the stabilizer for your mates strength, the check to his stamina and the wise encouragement needed to make sure he remembers it. Your strength may not be apparent to those who first glance upon you, perhaps it is not yet even apparent to yourself - though it will be and soon" A soft chuckle is given to these cryptic words before the dark mare moved on "Like the earth the tribe into which you were born represents you are outwardly beautiful but inwardly strong, your roots are deep. Maponus may be the strength of the herd..but you, you shall be its heart. Lynx has been chosen as your totem, it will remind both you and those around you to look deep for the strength within." The mare concluded as the filly youth moved forward to drape the lynx pelt across her back. With a sharp look the three withdrew.

And Divone stepped forth. The sacred flame held delicately between her roaning lips. It had been no small feat to keep the flame alive during their journey - it had required near constant care, not just by her but by many of the survivors, but the mere thought of letting it die off had been unthinkable and while she held but a child of the true flame - which now burned brightly within a pit in the sacred grove - it was the spirits blessing and the smoke wafting from the burning oak fell upon the two horses in writhering curls as Divone made her silent journey around them. A full circle, not one step more, not one step less, just as life ,the seasons and the earth all dictated. When the circle was complete she stepped back to her place among the Elders once more.

Alaunus stood in silence as Duska gave her the pair their pelts. The bears pelt sitting upon Maponus' back so that it's head rested atop that of the stallions. It was the perfect symbol to represent Maponus' seemingly unending strength and stamina. As the lynx pelt was laid upon Shylah's back he took a closer look at it's soft fur, noting how well it mimicked the mare's soft side. It was no wonder that Duska had gone to such an effort to aquire these pelts and prepared them for this ceremony.

Once the other two elders had preformed their part of the ceremony Alaunus stepped forward again. His eyes fell upon the newly appointed leaders of the herd. A wind blew through the grove, pushing his mane and the vines within off to the side. Another sign of the Spirits approval of this pair. "Maponus the Strong, Shylah the Kind. May the Spirits watch over you each day, may you lead us through the trials of life, lending us your strength and your kindness. Through the power of Sun and Moon, Sky and Earth and the mighty Oak may you help preserve out ways for future generations."

His eyes moved to the few horses who stood gathered. They were all of the old ways, which would now become the new ways. Nothing would truly change, their beliefs were still the same and it would always remain so. "Followers of The Moon, you are what remains of the old. Remember what was, and embrace what will be. I bid you to welcome your Astral Walkers, heed their words for they are the words of the Spirits."

Maponus stood in awed silence as the Elders preformed this all important ceremony. It was a rare site to see new leaders blessed, as it was normally placed upon the shoulders of the old leaders eldest child and their mate. However this time, that was not the case, for those horses had not survived the disease that had run rampant through the five herds. And now he and Shylah would fill this role. He had known this was coming, perhaps not this soon, but Maponus had seen himself and Shylah leading the herd during their dream walk. And now the moment had come.

As the young horse assisting Duska placed the bears pelt onto his back he lowered his head deeply in great respect. It's weight was not all that much but Maponus knew of the deeper meaning behind what Duska has said about it representing burdens. Raising his head again he watched out of the corner of his eye as Shylah was given her lynx pelt. It's colors complimented that of her own hide.

As Alaunus stepped forward again Maponus bowed his head once more as he received the elders words with an open heart. He was now an Astral Walker, leader of the herd along side Shylah. Once it was clear the Elders part was done Maponus looked at Shylah and then turned to face the herd. "It is with great honor that I accept this title. With Shylah at my side I know that we will tackle anything that is put in our way. Always remember those who are not with us in body anymore, they have joined the Spirits of the ancients in the Otherworld and will guide our hooves." Maponus fell silent, looking over at Shylah allowing her to add her own words now.
PostPosted: Thu Jan 21, 2010 8:59 am

Shylah was still in a state of shock as the ceremony progressed - she heard what was said and preformed the necessary tasks lowering her head in respect at the proper times and reveling in the feel of the lynx pelt as it was placed upon her back. This was all happening so very fast and to be honest after all the trying times they had been through over the last few weeks and months it as almost to much. Shy understood the need for it however - the herd needed to get back to a normal existence, they needed to move on with their lives, and they needed leaders in order to do so. It was just hard to process it all so quickly.

But Shylah managed to pull herself together as Maponus spoke, turning her bright eyes towards the gathered horses who were obviously waiting for her words "I too accept this honor and pledge to do all I can to guide the herd by the Spirits words, Do not be afraid to mourn those who have passed - we have all suffered during this event and it is fine to be saddened by what we have lost, but do not be afraid to be happy as well - we are on the cusp of a new life, a new future with the spirits blessing and it is right to be excited and happy about that as well" She told the gathered horses - knowing that some of them might be feeling some guilt about being happy about their new lives when so many hadn't made it. "Unless Maponus has anything else to add - then as an Astral Walker I dismiss you all from this ceremony, go and explore this new land of ours, eat, drink and rest" She bid the gathered horses to go with a slight motion of her muzzle.

As the horses slowly departed the gathering Maponus nuzzled Shylah softly. They were now leaders, and that title felt fitting considering all that they has endured to get the herd to where to was now. There would be much work to do to ensure that the herd regained its strength, focused on it's beliefs and continued on as it always did. But Maponus knew he was up to that challenge, especially with Shylah at his side.

Alaunus allowed the couple a few moments to take in what had just happened before stepping forward. "Excuse me Astral Walker Maponus, may I speak with you privately for a short time?"

Maponus looked up from Shylah at Alaunus standing beside him. "Of course." He told the elder and with on last quick glance at Shylah he walked off with the Grove Keeper. He said nothing as he walked as it was Alaunus who had wished to talk.

When the two stallions were a good distance away from Shylah and the other two elders Alaunus came to a stop. "It has been a long time since we named a leader who was not a descendant of the old leader. Though I have no doubt that you and your mate will fulfill this role well. You have already shown great leadership skills and are well versed in the herds ways." Alaunus glanced about the grove for a few moments, the vines in this mane shifting and bouncing as he moved his head.

As Alanus drew Maponus away to discuss other herd matters Divone turned her attention to Shylah, looking her over with a critical eye. The mare seemed a bit overwhelmed and tired - but that was to be expected and Divone knew he was about to throw even more surprising news at the little mare. news that she knew would be exciting - but also a little bit frightening. But it was important she knew..there were herbs and precautions that must be taken to ensure a healthy pregnancy and this one had already endured a good bit of stresses.

Breaking away from Duska who was busy muttering to herself about something or another Divone made her way over to Shylah giving her a warm look. "May we speak?" She asked the mare, her voice no longer held the edge of command it had earlier - Shylah was for all extents and purposes now of higher rank, but her lack of formal titles was a sign that this was to be an informal conversation.

Shylah returned Maponus' nuzzle and gave him a reassuring look when he glanced back before heading off with Alanus - she knew the steed was worried about her and while yes part of her just wanted to go and lay down somewhere for a few hours Shylah knew she had to present a strong front for her new herd. When Divone walked up Shylah steeled herself for some sort of political discussion about the herd - but the roaned mare surprised her, perhaps she just wanted to congratulate her on her new position in the herd? they had known each other for a long time.

"Of course" Shylah responded in a warm voice, he would chat with Divone and then perhaps find a nice warm place in which to take an afternoon nap. Maponus would probably be caught up with Alanus and others for a while.
PostPosted: Thu Jan 21, 2010 10:13 am

"Thank you Alaunus. I do intend to do what must be done to ensure this herds ways continue as they have." He assured the elder as the stood within the new Sacred Grove. His eyes settled upon Shylah at the far side of the grove as she spoke with Divone. She was likely getting a similar speech as he was. They would need a good deal of guidance from the Elders to ensure that things ran smoothly while they learned all the duties that came with being the leaders of the herd.

Alaunus chuckled at Maponus, he had little doubt that the stallion and his mate would excel in their new roles. Why the Spirits themselves seemed to have blessed this pair greatly since the pairing ceremony at the beginning of winter. And there was another blessing that was yet to be revealed to him.

"Come, we must find Oisin. He is eager to hear your story of how you came upon this grove and your owl companions." He led the younger stallion away to look for Oisin. "You can meet up with your mate afterwards."

Divone bobbed her head slightly "Good good" She told the mare, there really didn't seem to be much point in dragging this on Divone thought to herself as she looked at Shylah. The mare looked weary and rest would soon be more important then ever for the chocolate mare. Well...might as well get on with it then she thought. "I have noticed since your return to the herd that you look a bit different" she told the mare giving her a reassuring look before she started to worry "And tired - more so then the others who have made the journey...But that is to be expected at this stage of pregnancy" She told the mare with a serious look.

"It seems that you and Maponus have indeed been blessed in many ways, I would estimate that this occurred before the illness and it is a wonder you have progressed so well - none the less there are steps which must be taken to ensure healthy foals" She continued "they will be the first official foals born to this new herd...and as such we must ensure they arrive safely - they will do much to bolster the herds spirits"
