Something odd had been happening in the shop lately. Ever since that one item nearly came to life inside the building, the building has been...uneasy. Odd to describe a Building as having feelings like unease, but it was most certainly there. Every now and then it would announce its discomfort by groaning, and occasionally relieved it by causing a mini explosion of items, making some piles move and tumble.

It was basically being a grouchy shop...and how on Gaia did you comfort a building?

Switch didn't know how, so she did the next best thing; pretend it wasn't happening. She was really good at that! Especially on the days when her Curio son, Xbalanque, was in the shop with her. When Kay was in the shop, he tended to fix the messes and chatter to it (it was the only explanation as to why he'd be talking to himself, and that was fine with her), which gave her time to do paper work or research that curious book she once found in the desk drawers.

There was undoubtedly something cowardly about using your kid as a shield, at least to most people anyways. For Bastion on the other hand it was just logic. People did not generally harm little kids or at least didn't harm their parents in front of them. Thus taking Orion with him to this shop ensured that he had much better chances of nothing too terrible happening while he was there. He hoped so anyways.

It wasn't normal for newspapers to have advertisements in them only you could see. Bastion had wondered briefly if it was the papers new way of saving space by placing special ads over others with magic but quick phone call nixed that idea. Never mind that anyone who wanted his attention would have gotten it a lot easier with a phone call or email. Something wasn't entirely right here and Bastion intended to find out what it was.

Carrying the sleepy toddler in his arms Bastion warily entered the shop bearing the address in question.

Orion, exhausted after conquering the entire attic earlier that day had no idea what was going on. All the herald knew was that nap time today was also a trip.

Xbalanque, the boy with half a skull face and a feathered serpent fused to his skull, stopped his chattering when the stop door opened, his normal red eye and the empty black eye of the skull turned to observe the incomers. They were given all of two seconds of observation before a wide grin spread on his lips.

"Hullo, welcome! I'm Xbalanque, or just Kay." He said happily, wandering over to the man and the sleepy boy before Switch could even get out of her chair to greet the new comers. "This is the Curio Shop, and that's Na, she runs it." The boy said, eagerly pointing to the blue haired, green-eyed woman that was heading towards them.

"...'Na' is what he calls me...my actual name is Switch. Is there anything I can help you with?" She said graciously, getting that feeling that the Shop was meddling again. Xbalanque may have noticed too, but if he did he didn't let on. Instead he was staring at the little boy, and the little wings on his back. Nahual, the feathered serpent, seemed disinterested and instead slithered around as far as his short leash could take him.

"Can he fly? How old is he? He looks tired...we have beds probably!" Apparently he cared not for why they were here...they were here and that's all that mattered, apparently.

Bastion was taken aback by what had greeted him within the rather strange looking store. This was certainly not what he'd expected and he sent Orion a briefly look, as if to blame the boy for this sudden extra strangeness in his life. Before he could really think about the plausibility of that though he would need to respond to the people talking to him.

First he turned his attention to Switch as she was the other adult there. " I'm Bastion and your could start by telling me why the newspaper wanted me to come here?"

As he waited for a reply Bastion nodded in the direction of the dark skinned boy named Kay. "Orion can't fly thank the gods, I have no idea how old he is and he cans sleep in his own bed later but the offer was appreciated." Bastion kept his tone even when speaking with the child, not irritated by the questions, at least not yet.

All the attention had the small pale haired angel opening his blue eyes slowly and waving lazily at the boy with the funny face.

Switch's green eyes widened a little bit when prompted about the newspaper. Newspaper? That was new! She'd heard of people getting pulled in here, or TV commercials...but...newspaper? That was new! Hopefully her excuse to Scott would still fly with this man...

"Oh, it's an advertising campaign my uhh, associate, decided to try out." She explained, trying to be as convincing as possible. For whatever reason she could never tell someone about the way the shop works...until after they come back with a child in tow. It was frustrating, but she seemed to be bound to it. "They chose names from the phone book to see if they would get answered...and I suppose it's working." A small twinge of a smile crept onto her lips, and after motioning to the store she slid her hands in her hoody pockets. "While you're here, why not look around? You may find something that catches your interest. Sorry about the mess, I've been trying to clean it for months and never seem to get anywhere."

Kay didn't seem to mind being ignored the first time, but when his questions were answered he seemed happy. "Cool! I have my own bed too, and a baby brother that hurts when he bites. Can I play with him?" He asked, pointing to the sleepy little one.

Bastion nodded again to Kay and carefully set Orion down , only letting the toddler go when he was sure the boy wasn't going to just crumple his legs and slide to the floor.

He hadn't originally been keen on staying in this place longer than necessary, especially given that he didn't buy the advertising spiel at all. Some of the stuff he could see though might make it worth while to look around at least a little. As far as the black marketeer was concerned there might be a real hidden treasure in this dusty old place. "I see no harm in browsing." Suspicious circumstance or not he highly doubted anyone here was going to get hurt.

Orion rubbed at his eyes then smiled at the bigger boy. " Hi." He was still sleepy but it seemed a nap would wait. Now was the time to make a friend.

Well, phew, the man seemed to buy it. Switch smiled and went back to her desk. "Just call if you need me; or ask Kay, he knows as much about this place as I do, maybe even more." It kind of helped that Kay CAME from this place, after all. Sitting down on her old oak chair behind her huge, intricate and old oak desk, she thumbed through the ratty old journal that was left behind, trying to figure it out.

"Hi I'm Kay. You're Orion?" Yep, that's that the other man said, didn't he? The boy with the obnoxiously bright pants (something Switch could not talk him out of) apparently decided to change tactics, wandering to a shelf that seemed...a lot cleaner than the other ones. It was his shelf, the stuff he put his favourite things on. The item he picked up was a shrunken head, and he turned excitedly to show the sleepy boy. "This is Mrrh! Well..I think, anyway. It's all he ever says so I guess it's his name." The shrunken head's lips were stitched s**t, of course.

Orion stared wide eyed at the shrunken head, there were lots of things in his house, even more than in this place but nothing at all like that. "Did you.." the toddler paused. "Did you make him dead?" After all you needed a head attached to a body to live or at least the herald thought so anyways. Orion was young yet but he'd already discussed death with his father at least a little anyways.

Bastion looked over the items on the clogged shelves slowly, his eyes scanning them for anything that might be of real value, anything his customers might enjoy. Most of what he saw unfortunately was not something he himself could make use of later. The man reached up to better investigate what looked to be an engraved mirror when his hand was drawn just a bit to the left. Coal black eyes narrowed as Bastion found himself holding instead and old toy. "Haven't seen one of these since I was kid," he murmured.

Maybe.. maybe Orion could find some use in it though. It'd make up for dragging the kid out for what turned out to be a false alarm. Fiddling with the nobs on it to make sure the thing actually worked Bastion when in search of Switch.

Did he make him dead? What? Kay just stared down at the toddler, peering over the shrunken head. "No I found him like this." He said honestly, rather baffled. Wasn't the kid a little young to know about making people dead? "He was underneath the big dresser over there." Kay explained, pointing at the rather large shady thing at the other end of the room. "There's lots of really cool things in here!"

Switch twitched a bit when Bastion touched the etch-a-sketch, feeling that strange feeling bubble up inside of her. Yep, saw that one coming; that poor man. Hopefully he wouldn't come charging back like a few of her customers had! She stood to meet him as if expecting him to seek her out.

"I see you found something! An interesting little toy there...you know, I don't ever remember playing with one!" She said, glancing at the Etch-a-Sketch before looking back up at him. "If that's the item you'd like, you may have it for free...an apology for my associate's little advertising ploy." Swtich offered, tilting her head innocently.

Orion's eyes flicked between the dresser, the head and Kay. Who left little heads under dressers? Was there one under his dresser? The herald shivered at the thought and instead turned his gaze to the shelves. "Can you play with it all?" He was decidedly not allowed to play with most of the things in the house and thought he might like to live here instead if he could touch things.

Bastion raised an eyebrow at the blue haired woman but nodded "I think I, or Orion at least would find this the most useful." He'd never been very good with an Etch a sketch, spent most of his time making stair cases to nowhere. The man still didn't trust all this and thought it might be part of some sort of undercover operation, becuase it clearly wasn't Orion's fault, or something weird like that.

It couldn't hurt to take the item though, after all he could just have the staff check it over later and if something was suspicious they'd dispose of the thing and he'd buy Orion a new one.

"He likes being a bowling ball." Kay giggled, a strange glint in his red eye. Well, he assumed he liked being a bowling ball. He made all sort of fun noises when he did. "Wanna try?" Even though it looked like the boy's Father was almost finished with the shop. "Or we can try later, I know you'll be coming back." He whispered to the other boy, like it was some big secret.

"Then it's yours. Just next time you'd like something unusual, don't forget us." Switch smiled, okay with being looked at with suspicion. She was used to it by now! "There are no returns or exchanges and I'll ask that you treat the item with care. Those are my only conditions." Her hands clasped behind her back, twisting her fingers around each other. "If you like, I can give you my business card?" It might make him feel better, after all.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 18, 2010 1:23 am

Though the boy wouldn't admit it he couldn't quite sum up the courage to touch the shrunken head just yet. " Later" Orion agreed in a soft whisper, tiny wings twitching as he spoke.

No returns or exchanges, and take good care of it? Bastion was starting to think taking this simple ' toy' home was going to become more problematic than he had time for. Somethign was decidedly up here though he wouldn't figure it out by standing around talking to Switch. " I think I can live by those conditions miss and I'd appreciate the card." He was a business man himself after all and having the card meant.. well something to him.

Cool, it was a promise! Kay pat the boy on the head. Putting the shrunken head away, he lead the boy back to his Guardian, staring at the Etch a Sketch. Oooh, that was going to make an interesting one! He just grinned up at the man, his good eye closing but the skull eye staying wide open, empty and staring as always.

Nodding, Switch leaned over and grabbed a card from a nearby shelf, checking it to make sure it was up to date before handing it over. "It has every number you'd need to contact me, in case you have any questions." She informed him, knowing it was inevitable that he would contact her at some point. "I hope you have a great day!"
