"And no matter what," Marcus said as he and Layla headed for the perfect sledding hill just outside of time, "no stripping. Your clothes stay on at all times, no matter how hot you get."

"But--"

"No buts," Marcus said as they got there. "Now do I need to show you how to do it or can you figure it out yourself?" he asked as he motioned to the kids sledding down the hill in front of him.

"Mine!" she said, grabbing for the disk shaped sled under Marcus's arm. He grinned slightly and handed it over, watching as she raced up the slope.

"Didn't think I would," he said more to himself than to anyone, since she was already gone.

Miles stood nervously at the top of the hill, peering down as kids raced against each other, flipping over each other, and otherwise speeding off down the snow-covered slope. His slightly pudgy eyes peering over the landscape and his guise of appearing severely under-dressed for the harsh weather, gave the boy all the appropriate camouflage of a sore thumb.

"Come on Miles, don't be shy. Look at how much fun all the other kids are having." Shane encouraged as he motioned his hand to the other figures that were zooming downward.

Shane had tried everything he could think of to make Mile's first winter memorable, but to no avail. Snowballs melted in his hands, or dissolved on impact. Snow angels simply became imprints of muck and dead grass (though mostly muck), and the crunching of snow underfoot usually turned into the sloshing of water. Not that Miles minded either of these facts, because Miles loved water, but Shane really wanted him to see why snow was awesome too. Now, however it seemed that even sledding would have some unforeseen setbacks.

"Come on, it's just like I showed you," Shane spoke softly as he knelt down and put a gloved hand on Miles' shoulder. "Just sit down in the thing, push yourself forward a little and go!"

It really did look like a lot of fun, but this being Miles's first time well...he hugged his sled closer to his side.

"Uhh...I just wanna watch one more...okay?" he vowed, peering over the edge of the hill again. Why did it seem that every time he looked, the hill got bigger?

Layla pulled to a stop nearby Miles, eyeing the hill thoughtfully before she looked at him. "Is it best to start here?" she asked, assuming he had been doing it for a while. Why else would he be standing up here on the hill? "I bet it'll be fun!"

She put the sled on the ground, starting to climb on top of it. The problem was, the sled kept moving out from underneath her when she did.

"Uh, umm..." Miles started embarrassed as he fidgeted. Oh great, somebody mistook him for being someone that knew what they were doing. "Sure?" he guessed.

He figured that it was a good spot, considering it's about where he saw everyone going from, this being the top of the hill and all. He then went back to staring down the edge of the hill. There were too many people down there, what if he still didn't know what to do and accidentally crashed into one of them?

Out of the corner of his eye, he caught the girl again, failing with her sled. He thought to himself that maybe if she could go down the hill fine then he could too, he at least knew how to get into his sled.

"Um," Miles started again, raising his voice just barely enough to the point where the girl could hear him "it works if you sit in the middle." He motioned to the middle of his own sled.

"Okay--" and she fell onto her stomach, right in the middle of the sled. It started slipping, then sliding quickly, not giving her the chance to change her position, so Layla grabbed the straps with all her might and hung on for dear life.

When she hit the bottom she just stayed like that for a long moment, her narrow black eyes wide with shock. Then she let out a "whoop!!" and jumped to her feet, racing for the top again. "That was AWESOME!!" she told Miles before jumping on the sled again and sliding down. This time she leaned forward, trying to make it go faster.

Miles was almost disappointed that the girl went down the hill so easily, he had hoped that she'd have taken more time so that he could prepare himself. Still, that was twice now she had gone and she was clearly less educated in the matter than he was.

"Okay, you can do this," he told himself as he took a few steps back, closed his eyes and climbed gingerly onto the sled and then slowly began to edge himself closer to the slope of the hill.

Layla was already to the top by the time he was doing this, and watched him for a second before shaking her head.

"You're taking too long!" Layla said from behind him, pushing him. "Go already!" Then, unknowing the evil she had just wrought, she jumped on her sled and went after him, screaming with laughter the entire time.

"Wait, what ar-Ahhhhhhh!" Miles screamed as he went sailing down the side of the slope. He wasn't sure what was crazier, the girl who had pushed him off the edge, or rush he was getting from holding on for dear life as snow and cold air sprayed up in his face. The speed he was going at felt almost breakneck to him and he couldn't steer either. He would've told people to get out of his way but he was still in a little bit of shock. Fortunately, they moved of their own accord, because they knew how to steer.

Eventually the slope leveled out at its base, but Miles was still in too much shock to react. It actually had been a lot of fun, but the experience was too overwhelming and scary for him to talk or move. Instead he sat there in oncoming sled traffic.

"Get out of the way, silly!" Layla shouted at him as she stood with her sled and headed for the trail that led back up the slope. "You're gonna get ran into!"
