My understanding of sin is that it is an action that, when committed, creates a separation between us and the Father, and that separation is spiritual death. I have come across a passage that has given me a lot of trouble.

Quote:
16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.
1 John 5:16-17 (ESV)

It's verse 17 that gets me. What the sin mentioned is isn't what I'm really after, though I'm curious. I want to know why it was mentioned, and what function it serves, if it does not lead to death. I've got nothing, except that we aren't supposed to know because it would lead to pride, which can severely limit the love that John spends a lot of time talking about in this book.

As children of God we have confidence in prayer because of our intimate relationship with him (1 John 5:14-15). In love, we pray (1 John 5:16-17) for those who are in sin, but not in deadly sin (literally, "sin unto death"), probably referring to apostasy or activities brought on under the antichrist; cf Mark 3:29; Hebrews 6:4-6; 10:26-31. Even in the latter case, however, prayer, while not enjoined, is not forbidden. The letter concludes with a summary of the themes of the letter (1 John 5:18-20). There is a sharp antithesis between the children of God and those belonging to the world and to the evil one. The Son reveals the God of truth; Christians dwell in the true God, in his Son, and have eternal life.

That's about all I can conjure up in a few minutes, but it does seem to have a point; it could mean "there is sin that isn't unforgivable" while there are those that lead to certain death, such as blaspheming against the Holy Spirit.

Mark 3:29 (New American Standard Bible)
29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"--

Dang, Spike said it before I could. I got the answer sweatdrop

The sin that leads to death is, as Spike said, blaspheme against God. This is the big words way of saying that you reject God. Every other sin is cleansed with grace, but that one sin cannot be paid since you would not be accepting the grace.

I kinda feel bad now that I look back on it that I couldn't think of that at first.
