“What about that one?” Cyril pointed at a triple-layered chocolate cake; the lowest layer was dark chocolate, then milk, and finally white. In the middle, three raspberries rested together, adorned with a little tuft of cream. Kids liked chocolate, right? And Rie had been a chocolate pocky stick, so surely he should like chocolate cake.
“No.” Rie gave a decisive shake of his head and pouted at Cyril, looking around the bakery critically. They’d been in there for half an hour already, Rie being his usual imperious self and refusing to settle for anything less than perfection. “That’s not fancy enough. Princes need fancy cakes! I want one with a crown, and gold flakes, and gold and silver balls. And it shouldn’t be that silly mousse stuff either.”
Cyril sighed. His original suggestion of having a custom cake be made had been accepted gleefully by Rie – until the baker told Rie that it would take at least two hours. The impatient pocky boy had then instantly announced that princes never had to wait for anything and two hours was completely unacceptable. Now, instead, Rie looked like he was going to take two hours checking out every cake in the shop until he found one that he wanted.
About to suggest that they ask for a custom cake and Cyril could take Rie out to a movie while it was made, Cyril instead discovered that Rie was missing.
Again.
He didn’t panic, by now used to his charge wandering off and expecting Cyril to magically find him, but he did give the baker an apologetic look, “I am very sorry about this. He’s very fussy.”
The woman smiled warmly at him, “It’s not a bit of trouble. Children are so cute at that age, don’t you think?”
She was rather puzzled as to the relationship between the teenager and the child. She would’ve normally assumed they were brothers but the two looked nothing alike. And she could’ve sworn that the little one had fangs.
“Only if you don’t have to take care of them.” Cyril replied, stuffing his hands into his pockets and feeling horribly out of place. Left to his own devices, he’d just buy cakes from the supermarket. These exclusive boutiques depressed him horribly, especially since Rie seemed to be only content with food from them.
Rie had actually gone outside, having spotted another child peering in and thinking that they might fare better for having a third opinion.
“You!” He greeted the other boy imperiously, tilting his head up so that the light shone more brightly off his gold circlet, “Which cake do you think is the best?”

Ai couldn't help it, he'd all but plastered himself to the glass outside the cake shop when he found himself face to face with the most fancy cake he'd ever seen in his life. Oh but it was beautiful, like some sort of work of art! His eyes got huge as he gazed at it, mesmerized, "Oh, that is so beautiful." He murmured, sounding a bit breathless in a manner that had his guardian sighing.
That he could get into such a condition over a cake made her worry slightly, he was an odd sort of boy who was so determined that he would get married no matter what! He'd even somehow gotten himself one proposal already and she wondered if his friend really wanted to get married or was just humoring him. Either way she wasn't going her consent quite yet, he was far to young to actually get hitched. His day dreams about it was good enough for the moment if you asked the woman, "Ai, they will have to clean that glass if you don't peel yourself off of it." She warned him.
The boy stepped back quickly before he found himself drifting forward once more, starring at the cake once more. He wanted to get the artist that had made that beautiful cake to make the one that would be at his wedding he decided, flushing in a delighted manner. He jerked his head up when he heard someone address him with a sudden 'You'. He turned toward the voice and found himself starring at a rather interesting looking boy who seemed to be about his age who looked so pretty! His eyes got a bit wide and he felt his heart skip a beat, "Ah, what?" He tilted his head to one side as he listed to what was being asked of him before he smiled brightly.
"The best sort of cake? That's easy, wedding cakes are the best!" He chirped in a delighted manner.

Now, why hadn't Rie thought of that? Looking at the towering wedding cake, he had to admit that it was certainly fancy enough to qualify. It had multiple tiers, each bedecked with glittering ribbons and roses, and on top, two figures handpainted and made of china instead of the more common plastic.
"It is pretty." He gave the stranger that, looking at him for a moment instead of the cake, "But I need a royal cake. I'm a prince, you see. Just a normal wedding cake isn't good enough for me! It has to have crowns, and gold and silver balls, and maybe the two people on top could go away and be replaced by a dragon."
The other boy looked around his age, maybe. Rie had never seen anyone so pale before. Even Cyril had bright blue eyes; this boy was white and white and white, like a snow baby. It contrasted starkly with Rie's bright eyes and golden skin. At the moment, his horns were hidden by a little newsboy cap of black velvet, and his wings were trapped under his black jacket. Cyril insisted on Rie looking as normal as possible when going out.
That didn't do anything about the little fangs that flashed whenever he spoke, though, or the gold circlet that he refused to take off.
Remembering Cyril's insistence on manners, Rie held out a hand to the stranger regally, palm turned down. "You may kiss my hand and introduce yourself."
His fingers were bare of any rings, but his nails were a little longer than standard for a boy, filed into sharp tips. Perfect for scratching at anyone who got in his way. Rie wasn't some spoiled sissy of a prince, after all! He could take care of himself and his poor, helpless Guardian.

Ai nodded in agreement as the other boy agreed with him that the wedding cake was pretty as he turned to gaze up at it happily. He turned back to him quickly when the other boy explained that he was in need of a 'royal cake' and his eyes got quite wide, "Oh, wow. A prince? Really?" He whispered, sounding quite awed over the idea that this boy might be a real live prince. The only time he'd ever seen those before were in books and a couple of the romantic movies that he'd seen before. He tilted his head to one side as he heard it explained what things would need to be changed to make a wedding cake into a royal cake. It was kind of sad to know that a wedding cake wouldn't be used at a wedding but at the same time that the cake would go to a Prince would make up for that, right?
He chewed lightly on his lower lip before he blinked, looking a little surprised when the other held out his hand toward Ai, "K-Kiss?" He asked, looking at the Prince's hand. Was that how one greeted a Prince where this one was from? Wow, how romantic! He reached his hands out to take Rie's hand in them gently, lifting it up so that he could do as he was told as he kissed the back of his hand lightly. As he did so he felt his face flushing and his heart started to race a quickly in his chest, "M-My name is Ai." He said in a shy manner. That he was allowed to get to kiss the hand of a handsome prince made him feel special, as though he were starring in one of the story books that he read back at home.
The pale boy released Rie's hand after a moment, realizing that he was still holding it, taking a step back not wanting to appear rude, "Should I bow too?" He asked of the prince, curiously. He wondered if it was something he was supposed to do or not. Rie hadn't mentioned whether or not he should bow but it was just something he'd seen done in books and on the television so he figured that he should offer.
Behind him his guardian gave a bit of a groan, rubbing a hand against her face. This boy worried her at times... though in the back of her mind she did find herself wondering on the odds that the kid with the tanned skin was in fact a prince. He looked and played the part rather well so... maybe...

"Of course really. Cannot you see my crown?" Rie pointed up at his golden circlet. It was polished to a bright shine, a thin band of gold that had no ornamentation whatsoever but sat high on his brow and kept his hair from falling into his eyes. "It's actually just a circlet since I'm only a prince at the moment but once I get my kingdom back, I'll be a king and then it'll be a proper crown. With jewels and everything."
It pleased him that Ai greeted him with the proper respect. Rie tilted his little chin up and favored Ai with a regal smile of approval, "Yes, you can bow. And you may address me as Prince Rie, or Prince Rie of Arkonsel if you're introducing me to someone."
Ai was an unusual name to him. Rie, pronounced 'ree' to rhyme with 'bee' was short enough that it wasn't the single-syllable that was strange, but the fact that it sounded like a word in itself. He was sure that if Ai had a title, he would've introduced himself with it, but Rie decided to graciously overlook the fact that he was talking to a peasant boy. After all, without peasants, who would get stuff done for him? His Guardian was a peasant without a title but plenty of money and Rie planned to knight him later. Nobody should have that much money without being a noble, even if they were the child of a merchant family.
Maybe he could knight Ai too, if Ai kept behaving well.
Pleased with that thought, he gestured commandingly at the cake shop, "Come. You will escort me in and help me choose a cake, Ai."
Though located on a highly fashionable street, the boutique was quite large, catering mostly to high fashion parties, corporate events and weddings. Rie had been offered a drink and little slices of cake to taste as soon as he'd entered with Cyril, and there were little tables with old-fashioned padded chairs for the customers to sit at and sample the cakes. Ai could taste the cakes too to figure out what he thought was good.
Maybe Rie could name Ai his Royal Cake Chooser!

Ai was in all ways mesmerized by the boy in front of him and as it was pointed out he lifted his gaze to starring at the circlet he was wearing. That was a pretty item, and it marked him as a prince, huh? He gave a bright smile when Rie explained that this item was only temporary and that a bejewel crown awaited him when he became king. So that meant that not only was he a prince but he was the heir as well then? It made him feel that much luckier for getting to meet Rie, "It is nice to meet you Prince Rie." Ai said, bowing down before him then lifted his head and smiled.
He felt his already flushed cheeks darken further, spreading to color the back of his neck and the tips of his ears as well, "I will do my best to help you to find your Royal Cake." He said in a happy manner, at least he knew enough about cake due to stalking wedding cakes that might be able to help, "We can always start with the books that they have that show the cake designs." He suggested to the Prince, "Unless you have already done that?" He had come to the shop later then Rie had so he wasn't sure all of what he'd done thus far. Once he was caught up he would be able to be more help to the prince with the pretty eyes.
Ai was doing his very best not to stare, it was tough when dealing with someone who was so interesting, so pretty! The white wedding pocky boy had a weakness for things that were pretty no matter what they were. Clothing, people, items, they all fell into the realm of things he instantly fell in love with.

"I wanted a cake that was here so that I wouldn't have to wait around." Rie pouted, heading back into the store, confident that Ai would follow after him. He was a prince! Of course people would do whatever he wanted. Rie didn't notice if Ai was spending too much time staring at him. Whenever people saw his wings or antlers, they always stared at him and even though Cyril had made him cover them both up today, Rie still could feel them. The wings were like two extra arms, fluttering whenever he grew agitated, and the horns were like teeth. He could feel them as solid presences on top of his head, even with hair wrapped around him to conceal them.
"They gave us slices of cake to taste. So you'll have to taste them all too." Finding the delicate table with a single leg and marble-covered top, Rie scrambled up and pointed to the empty chair that Cyril had formerly occupied. "Here. You can sit there."
A woman in a pink apron bustled over with a smile, Cyril mere steps behind her. Before she could ask them what they wanted, Cyril started to scold Rie, or at least do his best imitation of it, "Rie! Where did you go? You can't just wander off like that."
"I wanted to get another opinion because you're useless at this." Rie explained calmly, and then gestured at Ai loftily, "That's Ai. He's my new official Cake Chooser."
Cyril looked at the white-haired boy, then back at his own charge, "..." Great. Rie had done it again. Choosing to leave Rie out of the conversation for the moment, he turned his attention to Ai, voice very gentle, "It's nice to meet you, Ai. But where are your parents? I'm sure they must be worried about you."
In the interests of diplomacy, the baker took a few steps back. She could get another tray of samples ready while her client dealt with his stubborn little brother.

"Oh, I see." He murmured. It would be easier and faster to get a premade cake though maybe harder to get it to be exactly what Prince Rie wanted for it to be. He watched as he turned and started to walk forward into the shop and he found himself following along after him. The Prince was strong and as such he followed along after him without question, it just seemed to be natural to do so when the one leading seemed to elude an aura of strength.
"We get to taste samples of cake?" He asked, sounding as though he were awed by that. He decided quickly that staying with the Prince was already a great move on his part because it was going to get him free samples of the sweets that he so loved. How luck he was! He looked at the seat that Rie pointed at before he nodded and climb up into his seat, settling into the seat in a cross legged manner. His eyes were then on the Prince again as he found himself looking him over. He wondered if giving a Prince compliments would seem rude. It was on the tip of his tongue to comment on his eyes, he had such pretty eyes! They reminded Ai of green jewels and as he watched the other he felt his heart start racing again.
The boy was pulled out of his star struck daze when he heard a voice other then that of Rie addressing him. He turned to look up at Cyril, finding himself starring at him as well. Wow! Everyone he was running across today was so pretty he thought to himself, unable to keep from blushing a little bit, "It is nice to meet you as well." He said to Cyril, "My guardian, Vanleia, is here with me." He set to looking around for her before he gave a smile and pointed to where she was.
The woman had followed them into the shop when they went inside, watching but not interfering with their game just yet. She would have done so if things were to get out of control of course but since Ai seemed to behaving fun she figured it should be alright for him to play with the little Prince.

"Of course! It can't just look good. It must taste good too. A prince would never eat something of substandard quality." Rie paused for a moment to make sure he'd pronounced 'substandard' correctly. He mouthed the word to himself, decided he'd got it right, then clapped his hands together, "Baker-lady! Cake samples, please."
The baker had already prepared a tray of small slices of cake, each delicately iced and placed on a rectangular saucer of the type that appetizers arrived on in Japanese restaurants. Now, she brought it over with a smile, setting it down on the table, and offered them each a little silver spoon. "Don't forget to clear your palate with water between slices, so that you'll know which kind you like best."
She poured out a glass of water for each of the two boys, then bowed and took her leave. Each cake slice had a piece of paper trapped under its dish that listed its type so that the boys could save whichever ones they liked best. Rie helped himself to a plate of swirled chocolate and green cake with a thin chocolate ganache coating and green piped leaves, and waited for Ai to take a slice before he tasted his.
Cyril smiled at Ai, thinking the blush was just because the boy was shy around strangers, "Enjoy the cake, Ai. If you don't mind, I'll go talk to your guardian."
Guardian, hm? Maybe the boy's parents were dead. Poor little orphan. It didn't occur to Cyril that Ai could also be a Pocky Boy. That would just be too big a coincidence.
Going over to the lady, he smiled at her a little shyly and apologized, "I'm sorry about Rie, ma'am. He gets very easily carried away and forgets that not everyone wants to get dragged into his games."

It was so wonderful to get to hang out with a Prince like this, they got to do so many great things he thought to himself as he happily ate a piece of a white colored cake with an off white frosting. He hadn't even thought about it, just reached out to take the cake that had a similar coloring to him first, perhaps it was some unknown draw to similar colors. The cake that they were offered was so good though he looked a little confused for a moment. Clear his palate? He tilted his head to the side for a moment before looking at the water and nodded. He reached out to take hold of it and sipped at it, maybe the water helped rinse your mouth? So the flavors didn't mix, it made sense to him.
"Mmm, this one is good." He chirped, then looked over at Cyril and nodded, "No, no. I don't mind at all!" He said quickly, not wanting for the pretty person to think that he would mind him doing something in any way, not wanting to bother or upset him. He watched him go before his attention was once more on Rie.
Vanleia glanced over at the boy as he approached before she gave him her best smile, "Its quite alright, young man." She assured him, looking over at Ai and his new friend for a long moment, "I know how my boy can be when he is around people that he finds to be good looking, he ends up following them around like a puppy. Its why I need to keep a good eye on him." To keep him from getting himself in trouble because he was a little blind to the fact that out in the world there were dangerous people.
