((I initially typed this up in Word, so I apologize if some of it didn't transfer right for some reason.))

He summited the ridge, looking down on the valley below him from atop a sheer cliff. The sun was just rising up over the horizon, casting the world in a faint pink light. A herd of aptonoths grazed below, their rough hides appearing a dingy red in the dawn’s light. But the man taking in the scenery was not concerned with the aptonoths, but rather, what was eating them.

The rosy light reflected off his metal armor as he took a deep breath of fresh air. The black spotted fur trimming the iron armor kept his body warm in the cold morning, reflecting shades of pink like everything else.

“Oi, Demvarien! Help me with this speargun already!” he heard his younger sister shout from down the hill.

“Coming sis!” he yelled back through the face of his helmet, snapping out of his trance as he ran down the hill. He hefted the large weapon back over his shoulder, where he’d had it for most of their journey here. With some sweat and heavy breathing, the two managed to get it to the top of the ridge. Demvarien grabbed some pylons and nailed the stand of the gun into the ground. “So, Lilan, you’re SURE that this is going to work?”

“Pssh, it’s foolproof!” his younger sister eagerly replied through her own helmet. She was wearing armor similar to his, although it was built to accommodate her feminine figure. “As soon as he comes into range, BAM! He’s caught and injured, and then when he spots us he’ll come over here and we’ll finish him off,” she explained with a grin. “Now all we do is wait,” the younger sibling said as she plopped onto the ground with a sigh. Demvarien sat down at the edge of the cliff, waiting. He started to doze, and almost fell fully asleep.

Until he heard it. It was faint, but he knew the sound. It was the roar of a fire wyvern. He turned and shook his sister. She raised a hand to signal that she’d heard it, and crept over to the speargun. One could feel the tension in the air as they struggled to avoid detection by the approaching wyvern. It came into view over the valley, sailing just past them.

It was small for a fire wyvern, and its scales were a dark reddish-brown. Normally, the two would have stood no chance against a rathalos. But this one was still in its adolescence, only just out of the nest. Its tan wings caught the wind and the webbing was held taught as it surveyed the area with flaming eyes. A low-pitched cry of panic swept through the big herbivores as they grouped together into a herd and started running. The young rathalos responded with a roar that shook the earth, before going into a dive.

The attempts of the aptonoths to run was futile, at least for one of them. The beast snatched one with its claws, quickly taking it down. With a bite at the neck the dinosaurian prey ceased its movement. Then the rathalos began to feed, caught up in its activity. That was when Lilan took aim.

The sound of gunpowder and rattling chains thundered through the air as the spear launched out of the gun and pierced the rathalos’ hide. It roared in anger and pain, before flying into the air to try and escape with its meal. However, it soon found that the chain limited its movements, the harpoon-like spearhead keeping the spear from coming out. It struggled against the chain, but it held fast to the gun.

However, not everything was going as planned. As Lilan began to reel in the wyvern, there was a creaking sound; the sound of the nails holding the speargun installation down being ripped out of the ground. Dem stretched out his hand and yelled to his sister, “Let go!” just as the gun was ripped from the top of the ridge, being carried away by the rathalos and taking his sister with it.

“Aiiieeeeee!” she yelled as she plummeted off the side of the cliff, clinging to the speargun for dear life. Demvarien had to act fast; the rathalos was flying away. There was the screech of metal scraping along metal as he ripped the lance off his back and extended it to its full length. He quickly took the spare harpoon and stuck it into the ground as securely as he could, tying the other end of the chain to his lance. He took up the lance and flipped it downward, aiming it like a javelin.

At this moment, Lilan completed her swing downwards, the chain growing taut and pulling down on the rathalos. It roared in pain again and stalled. Dem took the shot, and with an unknown strength from within hurled the lance towards his sister. She leapt off the speargun and grasped the lance as the rathalos flew away again, swinging back to the cliff wall. She hit the rock with a grunt, legs extended as she planted her feet on the surface. The chain was close to the ground, so she let go and dropped to the valley below.

The rathalos was furious now; so much pain. It circled around to inflict vengeance on those who had caused it this immense pain. It crashed to the ground about fifty yards from Lilan, and then roared its discontent. It turned around and saw the chain, grabbing it with its mouth and crushing it with its powerful jaws. Then it turned around slowly, bringing its head back as it summoned the flame.

With another roar, it released a fireball that flew towards Lilan. She pulled the bone-crafted greatsword from her back, using the flat of the huge blade as a defense and repelling the fireball. Meanwhile, Demvarien slid down the chain, his wall-like shield now strapped to his arm. He untied his lance and dropped to the ground with it, just in time to stave off the fire wyvern’s charge.

The rathalos stopped itself suddenly when faced with the point of Demvarien’s lance, roaring before whipping its tail around to strike him. He blocked the blow with his shield, but was flung away nonetheless. Lilan took the opportunity presented her, swinging her massive blade in an uppercut at the wyvern’s exposed tail. It bit deep into the soft underside of the appendage, and the rathalos roared in pain again, kicking backwards and raking her with one of its poisonous talons. Its claws shredded through the kelbi hide of the armor and ripped through the metal, but she managed to avoid being cut by jumping backwards.

Demvarien charged back into the fray, ramming the point of the lance into the monster’s leg. He cursed as it skidded off the wyvern’s scales with a spark. It craned its neck and bit into his side, crushing the metal and tossing him aside. He felt hot blood run down his stomach and onto his leg. The wyvern batted Lilan and her attempt at a counterattack away with a wing. It launched another fireball at Demvarien before taking to the air. The fire burst on his shield as he threw a wall up in its path. He staggered to his feet, seething.

“Let's kill it already, sister,” he growled, before roaring with primal fury as he rushed the beast. It rushed at him with a growl, but was quite shocked when Lilan took a brutal swing at its right leg from behind before it took more than a step; and Lilan had hit the leg from its left side, where it was relatively unarmored. It shrieked in pain before falling to the ground. In another deft strike, Lilan finished the cut she had started earlier, fully removing its tail. Demvarien swatted its head out of the way with a blow from his shield before ramming the lance into its chest, impaling it almost fully. Its roars died down to a growl as it slowly began to die. But it would not allow itself to die alone. Lilan was taken full in the chest by its tail as it suddenly rose and slammed its body into Dem, flinging him back once again. It took to the air, intending to escape.

“DEM!!” Lilan yelled as she brought her sword back for a titanic swing. Demvarien ran over to her before stepping onto the sword blade, balancing himself precariously. Lilan roared as she brought the blade upward into a swing, catapulting Demvarien after the wyvern. He cocked his lance for a strike as he neared it. The hunter thrusted as he collided with the wyvern, stabbing it in the torso once again. The monster screeched one last time before diving downwards and crashing into the ground. Its body shuddered as it finally died with a groan. The dust slowly cleared to reveal Dem on top of the spread-eagle wyvern. He removed the lance from its corpse, then turned to Lilan. Her brother took off his helmet to reveal his long, black hair.

He was pale, and even paler than normal now. Demvarien managed a weak smile despite the pain and blood loss. But most haunting to Lilan were her brother’s purple eyes. They seemed… bigger than normal. Like they always did after a hunt. He breathed shallowly before falling to the ground beside the dead beast. Lilan pulled off her own helmet.

Her hair was a shade of deep red, matching her brown eyes well. She kept her hair in a bun while hunting so it didn’t get in her eyes, but a stray bang floated down to reveal its true shoulder-length. “You idiot,” she joked with a grin, “Let’s get you bandaged up.” She walked over to him and started helping him out of his armor. The sun was full in the sky now, and they were in for a long day of processing the kill.

Looks great! Not the first... i had started one awhile back... never got really far in it.... But it looks great... Nice detail.... Could have made the fight sound alittle longer... from reading it , it looks like it too then make 3 min to kill it... just add some detail here and their... have it go somewhere and they have to track it... Very nice.

Like the others said, the rathalos was a bit short, but if im not mistaken, it's a young rathalos is it not? Then it probably is weaker than a regular one?
