One of these days, he was going to get arrested.
Just not today.
The truck screeched to a stop in the partially empty lot, and Jude slammed the door once he'd gotten out. Took his henshin pen, stormed up to the bridge, threw his hand back and--stopped.
Hurling your source of power into a river would probably cause more problems than it would solve, but he was half-tempted to toss it, then jump in after it and drown again just to be spiteful. When they pulled his body out and Chronos brought him back he'd tell them he dropped it because stupid Leo had to be such a b***h.
Somehow, that made sense to him.
Probably because they were both morons.
After about three times to let the stupid thing go flying into the water, he gave up and shoved it back in his pocket. More speeding was in order, because if he couldn't be calm or fight he had to do something.
Gift shopping for Hero he'd told Serah she was fond of red. If that were true, then she'd have liked his vision just then since it was about the only color he could see.
Red and blue. Light blue.
--Oh, Hell!
"s**t!" Jude slammed on the breaks and the truck narrowly managed to avoid thrashing the poor girl jogging--albeit not in the best of neighborhoods for it. By some miracle (not that it would have mattered if he did die), the back end was forced to a stop by one of the few trees around and it's driver stumbled out with only a bleeding forehead, whiplash and a slightly damaged steering wheel.
s**t. Shitshitshit.
"Hey!" he yelled, rushing toward the person he hoped to God he hadn't hit. "Are you--Dani?!" Just piss in his cereal why don't you? "Oh my God! Are you okay?! Dani?!"

Dani was super duper excited to have her cast off. She was also super duper excited to be out jogging, mostly recovered from the wounds that she'd received fighting the flying youma bat monster from hell, which would explain why she'd lost track of time and ended up in a neighborhood she didn't exactly recognize. She'd been busy trying to right herself by checking street signs when the psychotic driver in the truck had come barreling down the road. She wasn't one of those girls who jogged with earbuds in - come on, that was asking to be abducted or hit or something - but she didn't think to glance over her shoulder as the truck went by, either.
Simple trust and faith that people would be paying attention while they drove.
Simple trust and faith was going to get her killed one of these days.
She screamed a little when she saw the truck go whipping around her, flung her arms up as though she could stop its rapid approach to the tree through mind powers alone, and screamed again when it hit. Not terrified screaming, more oh my god, seriously, it just hit that tree screaming.
And then the driver stumbled out, and she realized she'd seen that truck before. It had been dark, but she'd seen that truck. The person in it was --
"Oh my God, Jude!" There was definite alarm in her voice, and she sprinted toward him, looking confused and horrified at the same time. "I'm okay! Are you okay? Oh my God, you just hit that tree!"
Jude's lack of filtering system, meet Dani's.

"Forget the tree! Are you okay?!" He didn't yet comprehend she'd already answered that. Only after he'd grabbed her shoulders and looked her over from top to bottom did he feel like he could breathe again. No blood on her, just some running down his stupid face.
You would think that skull of his would be thicker.
"I'm fine, we're fine," he said half to her, half to himself. Honestly, he was beginning to think Barren Pines was a vacation for them. "Don't worry about the tree. I am so sorry."
Even so, he did cast a glance over his shoulder to see just how bad the damage was.
That was definitely going to take more than a new paint job to fix.

Jude gripped Dani's shoulders; Dani gripped Jude's shoulders. She saw the blood on his face, all right, and she was a little concerned when he seemed to not realize she'd answered his question, but she recalled that Jude only listened 50% of the time, at least from her experience with him. It was a little bit horrifying to have almost been taken out by a truck going who knew how many miles over the speed limit, but now that the immediate danger was past, Dani was worried about Jude.
Who was worried about his truck. He glanced over to it, and she looked as well. Her reaction was a cautious, "Ooooh, that doesn't look good." and then a "What were you doing, Jude? You could have killed someone!"
Dani was not the most delicate girl under the best of circumstances. She was also still seriously in the grips of fight or flight mode, and probably squeezing Jude's shoulders too tightly for their own good.
Being Dani, she naturally assumed that, whatever was happening, she was going to know about soon. Because she was Dani, and also, he'd almost taken her out with his truck. She kind of deserved an explanation.

"You could have killed someone!"
Truth hurts.
Jude couldn't even kill his worst enemy (no, really, he'd let Obsidian go), let alone some innocent bystander. Yet, he almost had done just that. Talk about not needing anymore reasons to be unable to live with yourself. "I know, I'm sorry."
And worse, there was no real excuse.
He hung his head in pure shame, shame he deserved, and mumbled to her: "I have so many problems."
Meaning both he had problems and he 'had problems'.

Dani was not a delicate girl, but she was a caring girl, when she wanted to be. She liked Jude, for better or for worse, and she felt bad. After all, the only harm had been done to him and his truck; aside from scaring the absolute daylights out of her, she was fine. Just fine. He was the one bleeding and looking at hundreds of dollars worth of repairs to his poor truck. His poor, poor, ugly truck, which really hadn't done anything except operate exactly how it was supposed to.
So, when he hung his head, she slid her lower lip out in a pout. Jude yelling she didn't mind; he was kind of funny. Jude running around frantically after screwing up, that was okay, because it meant he was like, learning a lesson. But Jude standing there looking like someone had kicked his dog, spit in his eye, and then sucker-punched him for good measure? She didn't like it.
"It's okay, Jude." She dropped her hands from his shoulders, slipped her arms around his midsection to give him a hug. It was simple, it was sweet, and she hoped he appreciated the gesture. She didn't hug just anyone, okay.
"Tell me about it. It's not like your truck is going anywhere anytime soon."
Again, not delicate.

Oh, for God's sake. Was this really what he'd been reduced to? Running his truck into trees and getting hugs from Senshi who threw powder around in his jungle?
--Then he remembered Dani had saved his sorry a** and felt absolutely horrible about that thought.
His love for life could be rivaled by a dying fly, but the point was she'd cared enough to bring him back. Maybe he should have looked at the Zodiac that way, too, but it knowing they had to was a hard hurdle to jump over. Magellan could have let him die and didn't. It meant something to him even if he wasn't necessarily grateful for the end result, per say.
"I got in a fight with Leo," he explained, because he really did owe her an explanation and everything else under the sun. "Dani--" A pause long enough to carefully move her away to arm's length. "Thank you for before. I didn't get a chance to tell you."

"Don't worry about it, Jude. I'd save Polaris if she was dying in front of me," she explained, looking very sour at the thought. "But there is at least the benefit of me not completely hating your guts."
Dani shifted her weight from foot to foot, looking up at Jude with a casually interested look while he explained what had upset him enough to nearly take out a civilian on the side of the street. He'd had a fight with Leo? That was it? ... Really?
She'd had fights with her parents, but it had never inspired her to take her life and someone else's in her hands and go out --
Okay wait.
Sometimes, she got in fights with her parents and went out hunting youma. Damn. She had no room to talk.
She'd talk anyway. "All this because you got into a fight with Leo? What are you two, six? Or are you dating?"
She asked it suddenly, looking suspicious.
Was everyone gay?
"Oh my god, you two are dating and you had a fight. I thought you had a weird vibe. Don't tell me he's, like, going to Romeo and Juliet this with you."
Code for: crazy teenage suicide.
Hey, it was a legitimate question.

Too exhausted to partake in the typical freak out, Jude just shook his head and rubbed his temples. It did more harm than good, and the blood on his hands was something he was getting far too used to. Just so long as it stayed literal and not figurative.
"We're not dating, alright?" He wouldn't argue about their age. Now that he stopped to think about it--which only took nearly plowing down someone with his truck--they were both brats. Forget being girls, they were little girls. Spoiled, bratty little girls. "But yeah, that's it. It... was stupid."
Very stupid.
They were stupid.
"I don't know what to say." Other than to tell her he didn't know what to say, that is.

Dani was highly affronted by this entire state of affairs. She didn't know Jude and Grayson very well at all, but apparently they were good enough friends that one fight put Jude over the deep end safety wise. That, or he just had a really wicked temper, but considering she'd just accused him of being gay and dating the guy he'd been fighting with and he'd barely reacted, she didn't think that was the case.
Honestly, she was fifteen years old, but sometimes she wondered if she was ever going to meet someone with their life more together than hers.
"Well, that's dumb." Thank you, Captain Obvious. "So you had a fight - so what. The sun rises, rain falls, blah blah blah."
Delicate? When had anyone ever considered Dani delicate? She was, apparently, all tough love. She threw her hands up, still ignoring the blood on his face. He was still standing, so he was probably fine.
"You guys are friends, you're going to fight. If you're really good friends, which I'm thinking you are since you freaked out enough to drive like a madman over this, you're definitely going to fight. He'll know, like, all your buttons."
She wiggled her fingers, rolled her eyes. "Give it a day, go talk to him, get over the post-fight awkwardness, you'll be great. Golden. Trust me."
Dani had no idea what she was talking about in this particular instance.
This did not seem to faze her.

Dani knew exactly what she was talking about without actually knowing what she was talking about.
She really did resemble his sister in spirit; April had always been able to bring him back down to Earth when his feelings started running away with him, no matter if it was love or anger or something else.
Jude was far from the most perfect apple on the tree, but a lot of the times, all it really took was sitting him down (or standing next to him in this case) and telling him like it was. That was a lot of the problem with his current circle of friends--or whatever they were.
Hero refused to talk to him about things that mattered.
Barnaby brushed everything off like it didn't matter.
Grayson... He was Grayson. Enough said.
But Dani? God must have sent him Dani, he figured. His mother had told him you meet everyone for a reason, and if so, she had obviously been guided here to make him smarter. Which, ironically, made him feel extremely stupid.
Needed some girl who hadn't known him that long to smack some sense into him. Lame.
"You're right. It was my fault." He still didn't know why, exactly, but shouldering the blame was part of the two step process of his arguments. This time he was justified in doing that; Grayson had been handled very poorly, regardless of if he got angry over things that made no sense. "I will. It's just been a long, long couple of months for the Zodiac, so I guess we're all kind of batshit crazy."

Satisfied that she had gotten through to Jude, and more than a little pleased with herself, Dani patted him on the shoulder. "Good. I'm glad you're seeing sense."
She still had no idea what the argument was about, but her incredible ego wasn't getting any smaller knowing that she'd managed to bring Jude around without even knowing what they'd been fighting for. Had she known, she would have probably been more confused than Jude, knowing nothing of their history or exactly what the problem was (arguably, no one knew what the problem exactly was, just that there was a problem) but she didn't know. Didn't need to. She'd managed to say the right thing and save the day.
Cool, cool.
"I've had a couple of crazy months myself," she said confidently, fisting her hands on her hips and looking generally unimpressed. "I don't think the Zodiac have a monopoly on that. But, I'll give you this one because you've had a bad day and your head is still bleeding."
She raised her eyebrows, nodded to said forehead. "You should maybe dig your first aid kit out and take care of that before you pass out. I am strong enough to carry you," she said with absolute seriousness, "but I do not want to."

Jude stared at her.
Stared some more.
Stared some more.
Dani couldn't have possibly known the plight of the Zodiac. Barren Pines had been a Hell neither of them could imagine since neither of them had really gone through it; Dani hadn't been there at all and Jude was dead.
He was dead. Back from the dead, what, four times now? Five? s**t, he'd lost count.
Suddenly, he remembered why he'd felt so hostile toward other Senshi.
But Dani had saved his life and maybe his sanity for the time being, and he honestly just didn't care that much. Not enough to argue with her about it or launch into some depressing story about oh woe his best friend was dead and Leo had shot himself and God only knew what else he'd missed.
In the end, he just did what he knew was best in the company of women: he agreed with her.
"Yeah, alright. I don't think it's enough to make me pass out, though. I got lucky." For once. He knew pushing his luck was as unwise as pushing Dani, and he did neither. The kit was nearly out of supplies, but he had enough left to give his new injury (might as well make them collectibles) some half-assed treatment. "Your arm looks better. How long did that take to fix? A week?"

It didn't occur to Dani that she would be argued with. This was probably a good thing. Instead, she dutifully followed him over to his truck, a little relieved that the street didn't seem to be busy and so there were no passerby to call the cops and bring attention to the accident. She watched him doctor his head without a trace of sympathy (hey, he'd been driving recklessly, okay) but didn't comment further, either. Jude really had had a bad day, she just didn't know the full extent of it.
The question about her arm threw her. "I think I had the cast on like, six weeks?" A week? Was he serious? "Four to six weeks is standard for a broken bone. I was so glad to get it off, though."
He must have rattled his head harder than he thought if he was guessing a week for a broken bone.

"Six weeks? Are you kidding me?" Jude wondered if maybe only the Zodiac had crazy healing speeds, but for some reason that didn't feel right. If nothing else, he had a hard time believing the group of Senshi who seemed to get screwed over more than any other finally got thrown a bone. No way.
"Senshi heal faster than normal. Haven't you noticed?" When his hands were free, he pulled up the side of his shirt, showcasing the injury from their youma run-in that was far too fall along in the healing process to be considered normal. "See? I don't know for a fact that it's not just the Zodiac, but I'm guessing it isn't. I think you probably kept that cast on longer than you needed to."
