Ask any question you want here. Anyone can answer the question. This is like a help section.

i have a sort of umbrella question...
how do witches handle death?

i have no idea what goes on at pagan funerals, or how they pass on the body (cremation? burial? where would they bury it? O.O ). do you know of any rituals for commemorating a death, a ritual for remembering their spirit maybe? the 10th anniversary of my grandad's death is coming up, and i'm not sure what is appropriate for such an occasion....and answers would also help satiate my curiosity. biggrin

Death is viewed different per person. I find that most witches believe as they choose. I have heard so believe in reincarnation, other's believe in energy becoming part of the Earth (like Final Fantasy VII) and then there is the second plain, like there is a world on top of this world, that you become part of after you die. That can explain why there are intelligent ghosts and such. As for the remains, though cremation would be traditional, it is all about personal preference. There is no fear of "the second coming" so the body is just a shell or vessal.

I love Silver Ravenwolf. I recomend her to anyone. In her book Solitary Witch she talks about death.

"Most Witches believe that once the deceased individual has given some type of farewell, the spirit of the person goes to a truly wonderful place beyond our realms of understanding called Summerland. In Summerland we grow strong again, review what we did in the last life, learn new things, and choose (or not) to return to the Earth plane once again."

I hope that helps.
I lost my father November of 2008. I talk to him all the time because I believe he hears me. I placed a picture of him when he was young, healthy and strong on my altar in hopes he is at peace like he was then, and to honor him. Same with my deceased siamese cat, whom I miss.

Remember that on Samhain (Halloween) the veil between the living and dead is very thin, so always remember ancestors then. I found a very LONG Ceremony of Remembrance in Silver's book, it is VERY long and i'm not sure if you'd have supplies and such. I can type it out if you'd like. But what I would just do is if you have an altar light a white candle next to their photo and take time to honor them with silence. Speak everything you feel you need to say. If you don't have an altar, that shouldn't matter. Just find a safe place for a candle you can sit or stand in front of. I would also visit their grave with their favorite flowers (or candy, like I sometimes bring when visiting my dad's grave.). If you are better at writing, maybe write them a letter to place at their grave. And if you cannot visit their grave (like because of travel or cremation) leave the offerings at a tree or someplace you feel would make sense. I guess they best way to honor them is to remember them in life. Let them live through memory.

I hope this will work for you.

thanks! ^_^

silver ravenwolf is my favorite. another guild that i'm in had a thread bashing her, and i think i'm going to quit it....people shouldn't look down on you because you learned magic from a book, 'cuz frankly for some of us that's really the only way we can learn right now...

I know about the way people are with Silver, but she makes a lot of sense. And everything I learned I learned from books. I agree, not all of us have the luxury of large covens and mentors. If you choose to learn through others words, that is your choice. If the people who write the books give away all the "secrets" who also cares. I don't see the big deal, being secretive is why people still think we worship Satan and drink the blood of infants. If every witch was open, there might be more of us in the world.

Did I mention Silver, if she is so bad, then how come she has covens built off of covens built off of covens.

my thoughts exactly. but, as i am trying to learn to control my negativity, i decided to not say anything. to dare to be silent, as it were.
honestly, even if her writing is a little digressive, i look up to her a lot. even if an architect designs his house as he goes along, he needs to learn how to build a good foundation somewhere, doesn't he?

i think raven is.....i dunno the right words for it. i wont bash her, but i like other writers a little better. i think it might have been some of the teen witch spellbook she did, some spells were a little hokey. but if she works for you, go for it!!

I know ALL about teen witch, but it was written for teens. I was impressed with her Solitary Witch book. It provides wonderful stepping stones for a novice, in a simple way even a drunk monkey could understand. But what I think I like best is that there is a lot of info placed into one book, that would take several other books to compile the same info.
