Obviously the sight of Layla's hair irritated the lady at the counter, but for the life of him, Marcus couldn't see why. It was always like that. "So you think she could get a cut?" he asked.
"Sign the sheet here and our next open hairdresser will do it," she said, thrusting a clipboard at him. "Do you EVER brush her hair?"
"It broke," he said, scrawling his name on the sheet. "We sit over there, right?" he added, when she glowered at him.
"Over there," she agreed, letting him and Layla head to the chairs to their left. Layla headed for the toys in the corner while Marcus sat down, waiting patiently.

The doors let out a chime as another group came in, this time involving a young adult and a girl holding her hand. Both were silent as they looked around, the adult with a determined face and the girl with nervous, glowing red eyes. Both turned to face the woman at the counter, and the adult gently tugged the child to head that way.
"Hello...I was wondering if we could make an appointment?" Saige asked with a smile, before putting a hand softly on the shadowy locks of her child, Saar. The girl's skin softly glowed in the artificial light, catching the shark-like feel and making her whole body seem solid and stark. The shadows, in the corners, seemed to call to the girl, and she looked everywhere but to the woman at the counter.
"I know it's short notice...but she's in need of a haircut...and my friends recommended this place for her first one..."
Saar looked away from Saige, and caught sight of Layla in the toy corner. Here eyes were wide and her mouth shut, but clearly she was surprised. This girl was different, different than the humans Saar saw out the window, different in a good way. This girl was different, just like her.
"Mommy...look..." She tugged at the adult's sleeve, "She's different, just like me..."

Layla held up the toy she was playing with to Marcus, demanding his attention. It was a ball and pole game, where the balls were pushed on the poles.
"That's fascinating," he said, sounding bored. Layla rolled her eyes and put it down, heading to climb onto his lap, leaning against his chest before catching sight of the little girl that had just come in.
"Is she part dragon, too?" she asked him.
"Not that I can tell," he admitted. "Why don't you go ask?"

Saige looked down at Saar, before glancing to where the girl pointed. Blinking, she took in the girl a moment as Layla played, before turning back toward Saar.
"She is unique, just like you...maybe she came from the same home you did, before you met me...how about we see when I'm done setting up this appointment?" The adult asked with a smile, feeling happy to have discovered someone Saar could meet at such a young age. And who knows, maybe they could grow up as good friends, and be future play dates.
"Owkay..." Saar said in a soft voice, still looking at Layla as she took her mother's hand. Finally, when Layla looked over to where she was, she blinked widely for a second before turning away, hiding her face behind her translucent hair. Anxiously, she pulled her hand away from Saige and tapped the hard fingertips together.

"Tilde wasn't part dragon, but Reyn was, and so was Fluff fluff," she said thoughtfully. She was quite comfortable sitting on his lap. "Maybe she's part siren?"
"That," Marcus said, "is a lot more likely. But it means you've got a lot in common, right?" In other words, just go up to the girl already. Layla didn't seem to catch that thought, though, she was still thinking.
"This shirt is itchy," she complained. "And my socks ripped again."
"As soon as it's warm out we'll get you some sandals," he said. "You're keeping your shirt on," he added firmly.
"Think her shirt is itchy, too?"
"I really doubt it."

Once Saige finished with the receptionist, who in her opinion should find a new job or stop being so cranky, she glanced over to the man and the girl. The girl was now in his lap, which let her know who the father was, and so she knew who to introduce the girl to. Glancing to the side, she saw a few open seats and took Saar's hand once more.
"Come now Saar, it's not our turn yet for the haircut, so we need to wait and sit down..." She said softly, walking and settling a few seats away from the girl and her father.
Once they sat down, Saige in a seat and Saar in the once closest to the two others, the young girl clacked her fingers once again before looking over to Layla and Marcus.
She looked at them quickly before flashing them a fanged smile, and than looking back to her sneaker-clad feet. At that moment, she pictured her fin and the water she craved to sneak back it, where she felt really comfortable at home.

"Hi," Layla said, waving one clawed hand at the girl. "I'm Layla. This is my Papa. Are you part siren?" As bold as ever, it seemed, although she hadn't yet plopped down next to the girl like she had with Tilde. Maybe, thought Marcus, that was for the best. Tilde had been antisocial and snappy, this one was nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
"Marcus St. George," Marcus said to the mother, holding out a large, square hand to shake.

Saige smiled as the girl spoke up, moving to the side to grab a magazine but listening to the conversation that was about to begin. Saar hadn't gotten the chance for an interaction just yet, unsure of the differences she had compared to the other children who littered Barton. There weren't many beside human's, and the difference was clear. Saige still had trouble explaining why, and just insisted on the idea of being unique.
It worked so far.
Saar lifted her head suddenly at the girl's voice, turning her head and looking at the hand. As the question and the bold nature of the girl came out, Saar felt a bit at ease, and smiled softly back.
"Siwen?" She asked in her soft, unused voice, before thinking a moment and tapping her finger on her cheek, much like how she watched her new mother do at work, "Momma says I'm...Siwen and...Nightmare..." Saar glanced to Saige to see if she got it right, and the adult merely nodded with a smile and a prod.
"I'm Saar!"
"And I am Saige Black, her mother..." Saige said softly, smiling in response to the older man, and took his hand, "It's a pleasure and a relief to run into another parent that associates with the Agency."

"Yeah, ah, likewise," Marcus said, although inwardly he was starting to wonder if he was the only male parent in the batch. Well, considering the kids, he figured it was probably best he had gotten saddled with Layla. He probably would have traumatized the others.
"Whatsa nightmare?" Layla asked Saar, slipping off of Marcus's lap and sitting in the chair next to Saar. "I'm part dragon! I got horns," she added, proudly reaching up and moving her hair so they could be seen.

Saige's smile faltered slightly at his voice, and quickly reevaluated the situation. He didn't seem very irritated with her or Saar, and he wasn't that busy before she got there. Shaking it off as a paranoid nervousness, she looked down to the girls and brushed a hand through Saar's hair.
"A Nightmare is a horse! I got my ears and hair and fingwers from it!" She giggled and pointed to her wigglings ears, her hair, and showed the dark tips of her hands, all as she explained it.
"Do you...have a tail?" She whispered after a few seconds of thought.

"Uh huh! It's a fish tail," Layla said, reaching for her pants to take them off and show the other girl. Marcus gently grabbed her hand.
"You can tell her, not show her," he told her a bit gruffly, although there was amusement in his voice. "Right?"
"But it's easier to show," Layla complained.
"You're just trying to get out of your pants," he drawled. "She has a tail, but she doesn't have the fins like sharks do, just the fluke," he told Saar.
"It's black!" Layla added, giving up on stripping reluctantly. It was warm enough in here!

"Really? Saar here has a shark-like tail with a fin...but we are working on her getting used to using her legs today, aren't we?" Saige asked with a smile, where Saar nodded her head with a bigger smile.
"I don't use my legs lots...so I need...p...pwactice!" She giggled at the word as she stumbled over it, before saying, "Maybe we can play with our tails in the water?"
Saige grinned at the idea, nodded her head with sanctification at the young toddler's attempt at making a friend, "Yes, maybe another time they could play on the beach...having another friend with a tail would be fun!"
And, it would give Saar some confidence and socialization that she needed, since the girl was still a bit shy.

"Swimming!" Layla said, her black eyes lighting up with joy. "You can meet Tilde, too! We can all see who's fastest!"
"Layla St. George?" the lady at the counter said. "Your hairdresser's ready for you."
Marcus stood, motioning for Layla to get to her feet. "Here's my card," he said, pulling out a paper card from his wallet and handing it to Saige. It was a classy little piece, almost classy enough for the words "Dragon Slayer" written across the front to not be questioned. "Call us when you've got free time. Layla's always looking for a swimming buddy."

Saige stood up as well, smiling and taking the card with a quick glance over the words, "Of course, I'll call you later to give you my number, in case you would like me to watch over them sometime. I tend to have days off, and I wouldn't mind watching them both. Either way, we are both glad to have met you."
Saar nodded from the side, her bright eyes confused as to why the two were leaving. She held up her hand and waved, much like she saw the Barton residents do when they parted, and echoed what Saige said.
"Bye Layla..." She turned to her mom as they walked away and quickly said, "Can you call them now? I want to go swimming with Layla!"
Saige laughed lightly before sitting back down, "I know sweety, but they are getting a haircut, and you will be getting one soon. We can go and play another day, I promise.
