To the Goddess I give my heart My friend recently told me she is getting one.....I am very freaked out by them and refuse to use them...so here is what I am asking......
What do you think of Ouija Boards? Do you think that they even really work? If so are there any tips you can give me that I can pass along to her for using it safely? (Goddess knows I'm not going near that thing!) Forever and Ever

from everything I understand there isnt really a way to protect. (now i may be very wrong) but what ever guides the board may be 'good' or 'bad'. I have heard some very interesting stories of things going wrong with the board since you cant protect against whatever you invite to guide it. I myself have used a board once and it was interesting but i had a very chilling feeling up and down my spine. I asked things that my friends wouldnt have known about and still got real answers so I believe they work when you let them.
I hope that helped.

Well...I could put it to you this way...It is what you make it.
IS it a portal for spirits and whoever knows what else to get through?
Is it your subconscious guiding the cursor on the board?
Or is it simply a game? While the concept of a talking board is really ancient, the word "Ouija" is actually a word coined by Parker-Brothers; a board game company. Just a couple things for her to consider is all!

Well, the ouija board isn't the only one which is supposed to have spirits guide you to the answers. My mum uses a psychic circle board game, which comes with a protection spell to ward off evil things. So, maybe you can find a board game with protective spells or make up your own? Better safe than sorry.

I have a HellBoy Talking board, (It was a christmas gift a few years back, it also says on the instructions not inteded to be used to summon demons, I thought that was funny.) Any way I find it works and just about anything comes through but I would definitly be careful because you really don't know what may come through

Ouija boards are also known as spirit boards or talking boards. Theoretically, it is used to communicate with spirits. Most believers of the Ouija board believe that the it has no intrinsic power in and of itself, but rather, is used simply as a tool to aid a medium while in communication with the spirit world.
However, many paranormalists believe that the Ouija board is dangerous, and most cases of so-called possession are due to the use of the Ouija board.
It has already been said, but i also believe that the Ouija board is what you make it. Common sence plays a part, i.e not asking silly questions like "if you are here throw something across the room". I myself have used the Ouija board, haven't had a great amount of luck to be honest, but from my experience, i feel that it isn't dangerous, if used correctly.

All I have for advice are as follows: "Don't call up what you can't put back down." I know their are many sources that say this but, especially with divinations that require a spirit to intercede. make sure they know who and what they are before operating. Better safe than sorry. "Take it with a grain of salt" This goes for the rumors that surround these boards as well as the boards themselves. It is unlikely that this or any other object will spontaneously summon otherworldly beings of its own accord (if it does, RUN!) Also since the board requires Someone to communicate with (whatever it may be i.e. ghost, deity, etc.) take in to consideration the concept of enlightened self interest. The entity may have its own agendas so if it tells them to "do" things, stay cautious.

I honestly am not sure about the whole thing. How can a childrens toy be so dangerous, you know? But then one of my Pagan friends had told me of bad experiences with one. Also, from another friend I was told about someone (who they do not know personally) who made their own out of well...things that I don't think anyone should use. (He worked in a slaughter house and used left over blood. ) That story sounded a bit far-fetched to me so I haven't taken it seriously, but who knows? If anything, that would be the dangerous one. As far as regular toy Ouija boards, I've never used one and while I'll admit I'm skeptic, I'm a little too wimpy to actually test one.
I can't offer much advice other than agreeing with the others who said it is what you make it.

Eh- they are what you make them. My bestfriend (and the only person who knows I'm Wiccan) got me one for my birthday when I was in 9th grade (before I decided on my religion). The only reason she got it was because she knew I was into what she thought was "witchcraft" (Goddess bless her, she's a terribly uninformed Catholic ^^'), and because our pre-AP english teacher that year told us how a Ouiji board terrified her and made her think she was going to die and made her have horrible nightmares. Needless to say, it didn't work. But it was also one she got from Toys R Us... So, really, I'd say they're kind of a waist. I wouldn't worry if I were you.

I think it dose work, but no better than a mirror or a TV box. Adding the energies of multiple people help in finding the spirit, but I do not believe they attach to you. The spirit wants to find you, it is no mistake that they do. They often times have a message to deliver. But you do sometimes find a prankster, which is just as harmful as a prankster in real life. They are not as harmful as people make them out to be. The theology of ultimate evil and ultimate good is derived from the Christians. That means that any spirit has good in them, and bad, so I fear them as much as I fear humans. To further the argument, the game isn't that terrible. Most of the stories are made by people who were possible under the influence, and are looking for attention. The inter-butt is not a reliable source, especially on a topic as superstitious as the board.
Plain and Simple: Ouija boards do work, but it is not as dangerous as people make it out to be.

I've never used one. Nor do I plan to.
However, the use of them is...hmmm I heard once that it's just the vibrations in your fingerips that move it--not a spirit at all.
Cast a circle? That'd be my way to create a protected area. And be respecful, if a spirit does really arise, don't offend it in any way because anything can be dangerous.
Hope that helps.

I've never personally used one, but my dad told me that when he used one once it started levitating when he was using it. I'm not sure if that REALLY happened or not, but that's what he always said. So I never wanna try one.

In the anime/manga XxxHolic, they had an episode featuring a game very similar to the Ouija board. They brought into question the intentions of the people playing the game. They mentioned that, although the players may not have been directly malicious or evil, in the back of their minds, they all wanted something exciting to happen. They might have been thinking "I hope we don't call forth a demon or anything", though really they were thinking that it would be very interesting if something like that were to happen. I think this applies pretty well to the Ouija board. It's what you make of it. If you're subconsciously focusing on horrible consequences, then horrible consequences are much more likely.

I agree (and you watch holic too sweet) you get what you ask for in a sence but i personaly wouldn't use them with out even small percautions first like setting up a something to prevent malciouse spirts and such from comming forth,
