Scarlet had just found an empty basket. More importantly, it was the empty basket of the foal she had only recently adopted. This was the second time in a row now that she left the basket unattended for a small time and it popped. Qickly she sniffed under adjacent bushes and even looked in low blances, incase the foal had wings. Nothing was to be found. She quickly began to lose her nerve. It was the dead of winter. There was no way the foal would survive long without a mother to provide for it. thoughts of the poor baby, frozen to death or starved made her eyes well a little and she sniffed under the basket futally. Where could the baby be? She only left for a moment, so it's not like the baby could have gone far. "Rutherford?" It was the name Claude had given the child, wince Honeybutter was "less than dignified", though Scarlet thought it perfectly acceptable. Still, the namesake, her late brothers, made her feel very good indead. "Rutherford," she called again, this time louder than her paniced squeak. "Rutherford, this is not funny. Come out this minute!" She stomped her tiny hoof, accentuating her point. She fancied herself quite stern in that moment. Perhas too stern, she lamented. "Please..." she added, so the baby did not think she was so cross with it, simply scared.

Enyalius stretched his lean body, he'd been cramped up in that damn basket so long he had wondered if it was even -possible- for him to walk anymore. His stomach rumbled rather loudly and the foal prepared to go on a hunt when a voice started yelling out for someone 'Rutherford?' who in the ******** was Rutherford. It took him a moment to recognize the voice of the little usida that truly believed she had 'adopted' him. Truely the little creature had as much sense as a sack of bricks. Turning slowly he moved towards where he'd left his horrendous shell. "Right here ..." he made his voice sound small, but there was stil lthe deep baratone hint of a German accent hidden in it's depths. A mask of innocent fear fell over the kalona foal's face as he meekly slid out of the shadows.

Scarlet's head whipped around, and despite her sorrow int he foals fear a smile slid across her face. She ran over to the colt and nudged him this way and that checking him over for injuries. "Well, you seem to be alright, no obvious problems. Oh, baby, I'm so sorry I left you! I didn't expect you to emerge yet!" She grinned and nuzzled his snout a little. "Oh, don't be scared little one, I'm here. Little Rutherford... I'm here." She laughed a little and groomed his mane some. "Oh my, so many days in that basket, and you're quite dingy. Near home there is a lovley hot spring, but first I think we shall get you some food." She looked him over with vague concern. She did know that he was a Kalona, and he'd never hear the end of it from Claude. Hesitantly, she noted, "you know that you eat meat, correct?" She'd never ask a creature to go against what they were meant to do. True, she couldn't teach him to hunt like a proper Kalona mother, but she could try. Claude hunted with Nenharma, so perhaps he could teach him.

Enyalius stood perfectly loose, his body swaying this way and that as she nudged at his sides, gods this was annoying. Despite that though he kept the mask slammed down over his face. He lowered himself slightly so she could have better access to the mane she was tugging on.
His eyes widened as she mentioned meat "I-i doooo?", inside his head he was cackling 'much rtaher eat -you- little mare' but his twisted thoughts never reached his lips, or even the wide bi-colored eyes. He shivered slightly and his wings twitched.

Scarlet nodded, feeling vaguley proud of herself that she had effectivly taught the baby something despite her already short coming. "Yes, and since I'm not too sure how vegitations would affect your tummy, since meat tends to upset mine, I shall have to employ your brother, Claude, to teach you how to hunt." There was a pause when she grinned. It was short lived however, since a thought had just come to her mind. "Oh my, Claude! I promised hime I'd be home with you by now! Oh, he shall be so cross with me! Let's go, Rutherford, we can't be any later than we already are!" During her little explosion she ran in small circles, as though unable to control her spurt of sudden energy. Finally she stopped, a small cloud of dust puffing up around her hooves. Scarlet knew, however, that she couldn't dash like she wanted to. She would have to go at the pace the little foal did. And since he did not know the way to her mountain top home, she would have to lead him. "It's not too very far from here," she said with a grin. "Just stright north for a few moments, and then up the face of the mountain. The sun shouldn't set unti we're home. Come along, little Rutherford!" She nuzzled his face as she passed.

Enyalius stretched his wings as he watches the little mare run in wild circles. His tail swayed slowly back and forth as he cocked his head to the side. His ears flicked at the constant mentioning of his 'brother' Calude, he wanted to snarl but he fought the urge. He would obviously need to out this Claude in his place very quickly.
"Right behind you!" he forced a slight grin and wondered along behind the small mare as they headed towards her home.
He could almost sense his real mother lurking in the shadows, and gave her a big grin since Scarlet's back to him. But he didn't stop to acknowledge her, wherever she was, Shade would show herself to his new family when she was ready to have him back.

The air thinned slightly as the smallish couple ascended the shortest of the mountains. "You shall love you home, Rutherford! It's just so full of love! We truly are lucky to have been blessed with such a lovley family, really," she mused gently to her colt. It was just like her, really, to already think of this colt, so obviously not of her own blood, as her own. "It's a pity, really, that mothers can leave thier babies like they sometimes do..." she lamented, turning to give Enyalius / Rutherford a small kiss. "Don't fret little one," she reassured gently, "there is plenty of love to be had." She grinned again as the ground leveled out. "Scarlet," a red head popped up from a lithe tri colored body with a smile, "Claude is quite cross with you, you know." His eyes lighted on the foal, double took, and forced a smile. "This must be little Rutherford," he said softly. Scarlet grinned wider, since it was apperently possible, and nudged Enyalius / Rutherford over to him. "Go say hello, Rutherford, that's your brother Suichii."

Enyalius just listened for the time being, giving her a sweet smile every now and then. He snickered to himself when she mentioned mother's leaving their baskets behind, oooh if the mare only knew how close his true mother was, to be raised by another. He flicked and curled his tail as they walked. "Sounds, lovely ... mother .." he almost gagged as he forced the words from his throat, but he suppressed the urge.
He came to a quick halt as the other stallion appeared and eyed Suichii with disdain for half a second before he forced a natural looking smile of his own. "Hi ... S-sui-..." he paused for a second rumpling up his muzzle "Sui-Suichii!" He flicked his tail and beamed upon finally saying the name.
Deep inside himself, Enyalius was rolling in hysterical laughter at their foolishness.

Scarlet's heart lighted at the little voice calling her mother. She'd forgotten how lovley it was to have a baby. She grinned and nuzzled him again. "You're a good boy," she cooed gently, cleaning a bit of grime from his cheek. And now you are a clean good boy!" She chuckled to herself. She was so glad Suichii's unease was so easily calmed. It now smiled easily at the little boy, curled up lazyily in the evening light. Evening... oh dear. "My it's late, I hadn't realized how so! My dear baby, you must be so tired! Come, I shall show you your bed." Scarlet trotted up the camp, passing the two legger Nenharma on her way. She winnied happily to her, though she did not missed the look of horror the woman cast at her foal. She loved Nenharma. She truly did. However, should she try and cast out her baby there would be retribution. Yes, Nenharma was brutally and nigh on fatally wounded by a Kalona. But it was not this one. Everyone deserved a second chance. "Come little Rutherford. Tomorrow you will meet the rest of your brothers! Even your neice!"

He followed after Scarlet again his tail flicking back and forth as they moved farther into the camp.
His sharp eyes didn't miss the horror on the two-legged's face either. He tried to cast her a goofy grin, but his mind was already working up ideas, he would have to remind her once more why any kalona no matter how 'good' they seemed should ever be trusted.
His tail curled back and forth as he continued to follow the little Usida. Upon being showed his bed, he rustled around in it much like a dog shifting things around until it was comfortable and stretched out on his side, wing relaxed as one flopped across his side and the other stretched out as well.
He drifted off to into sleep, dreaming of the tortures to befall this poor family.

Scarlet was perfectly elated that Rutherford / Enyalius approved of his bed. Scarlet couldn't count the times she made and tore down that thing trying to get it perfect for a baby. Straw, hay, feathers, grasses... eventually she had settled on what she saw was the pefect combination. She smiled in maternal pride at the sheer innocent beauty of her baby asleep and curled up next to him. She just watched him for several hours, just enjoying being a momma again. Soon she too drifted off into sleep.
Claude arrived several hours after the foal had fallen asleep. He looked at him with a critical eye. He looked harmless enough, though anything could look harmless in it's sleep. His mothers head rested close to the foals, perhaps too close for his own comfort. For fear of his mothers disapproval Claude resisted the urge to move her. The last thing Scarlet needed was someone to push another baby out of her life. Not after what happened last time. Of course, the last thing she needed was another heartbreak, too.
"You don't approve, Suichii said gently as he sauntered up to his brother's side. He had to admit, it was a touch shocking to see his mother trotting up the hill with a Kalona colored in the same fashion as her precious basket. He nudged her hoof up onder her so she would be more confortable as she slept. "He seems good enough. Perhaps we can teach him to stay this way," Suichii offered in a less than hopeful tone.
Claude's head jerked in Suichii's direction as he spoke. He shrugged helplessly at the foal. "I don't know what to think, Sui. He's a kalona. A foal, yes, but a kalona. What am I supposed to do?" He sighed and accepted the encouraging nudge from his brother. "Everything seems good enough to you. You are too sweet for your own good," Claude murmured. "But you're right. Time will tell the merit of this little one. For now, sleep calls to me, and to you too, no doubt, brother." He saw Suichii smile as the stallion sauntered over to his bed. Claude lingered a few more moments, looking around him. He was not an idiot. Kalonas were horridly proud, and that transferred to thier offspring. It was a 'look what evil I hath wrot.' Claude had no doubts the mother was lurking around here somewhere. He'd just have to be a more diligent watch gaurd than usual for his family. Finally he too slithered off to his bed.

Enyalius wasn't deeply into sleep, but he was also only vaguely aware of the two stallions speaking nearby. The words were nothing more than a low buzzing in his ear, almost like a fly. His ear flicked as if to shoo away the annoying buzzing and he shifted tail thumping against the ground. As the voices of he two stallion's started to fade though Enyalius relaxed and his tail curled around one leg. Normally he wouldn't sleep so soundly in the presence of strangers but he did know his mother was close enough to swoop in should the issue arise.
Had Claude known how right he was, and how close said mother was he might have been even more unnerved by the kalona offspring his mother had adopted. As it was Shade stood on a tiny ledge above them her eyes glowing faintly in the darkness. Her wings were folded gracefully against her small sides and her tail flicked back and forth. She knew this game Enyalius was playing well, Masquerade and her son Deception had both played it, but Enya had taken it to a whole new level. The mare smirked, her black lips curling over her fangs in a devil's smile, she would swoop in when it was time, but for now she was content to watch over her son from here where she wouldn't be noticed.

Scarlet, as per usual, was the first one awake. The sunlight filtered in through her eye lids and gently prodded her awake. Just as with anyday, she propped herself up on her front hooves andyawned noislessly, stretching her back up, then pushing her hooves infront of her to stretch it out and down. She stood with a slight cracking in her joints which announced her age. She didn't mind. She loved that she was getting old. With every passing day she felt herself growing wiser and more seasoned to the ways of the world. Carefully she stammped out the remaining embers of the camp fire. She had long since devloped calluses of the sensitive undrside of her hooves from the hot coals. Witht eh deft movements of the practiced mother Scarlet got together baskets for breakfast for each of her babies. Wheatgrass for Claude. Blackberries and Raspberries for Suichii. Clover for Sweetpea. Strawberries for herself. For Rutherford / Enyalius ... she wasn't sure. She'd have to ask Claude to teach Rutherford / Enyalius how to hunt later...

Enyalius slept a little longer, but he was soon starting to wake up stretching his entire body with a loud mewling sound. He opened one eye to eye the mare as she gathered together the baskets of food. Rolling onto his side he climbed to his hooves and meandered over sniffing at each basket before he wrinkled his muzzle, none of it smelled appetizing, he couldn’t figure out how these creatures ate such food.
Twitching his wings Enyalius moved away and started examining the camp he would be calling him for the time being.
He stuck his nose anywhere and everywhere it would fit getting a good sniff at whatever interested him, or at least –seemed- to interest him. Truthfully Enyalius was planning his day.

Scarlet turned her head over towards the colt and smiled gently to herself. They both needed to head down to the stream to wash up, she noted, gently nosing Sweetpea awake. "You need to stay here and hold down the fort baby. I need to take Rutherford to get washed up." Sweetpea only nodded sleepily and drug himself over to the pile of green Scarlet had prepared for him. She amiled faintly at her son and then turned to Enyalius. "Baby, come with me, aren't going to get you all cleaned up!" She grinned brightly and nudged him over east, towards the stream.
