Elke spent a lot of time out in the cold, cursing--or what passed for cursing with her--the Crystal uniform and its short skirts. Barren Pines, now, those had been warm skirts. The boots had been welcome, too, not these prissy little loafers (that were really, really cute, but got snow all down them when she tried to walk). Really, if she had thought she had a choice, she would have been off in her dorm room, hiding under her covers until dinnertime. But she had to get Mackenzie or Andeon or Grayson or hell, anybody really, to help her with patrolling.

She had brought a bribe.

(It was apple cake.)

(It was a healthy bribe.)

But the school day was over, and she hadn't seen any of them at all. In fact, the only person she saw was poor little Yvette, coming down from the school--poor Yvette, she was so shy, and--

YVETTE.

She brightened up and waved, yelling: "Yvette!"

Someone had literally shouted her name. She looked up, her expression almost coming across like that of a timid rabbit about to flee for dear life. However, dark-haired Yvette did not run for dear life. In fact, when she finally noted who had called to her, she smiled that tiny smile of hers and waved her hand in greeting. The shy girl's voice never really carried when she attempted to yell, especially since the loudest she could get with real effort was normal talking volume. Really quickly, she glanced down to her watch to check the time, nodding her head when she calculated she had 10 minutes before she needed to be at the bus stop. If she missed it, then it would be another 2 hours before it came again, and then she would not be able to say goodbye to Daddy before he left for work. She had always wished Daddy a good day at work, and it was always for his benefit more than anything.

With a step that seemed more like a trot, she approached the short-haired girl. It was obvious that Elke managed to survive the organ trafficking ring, and it was obvious she did not go to Meadowview. The uniforms at Crystal Academy were so adorable, and even more important, the Crystal Academy campus was much safer than Meadowview. Yvette couldn't help but wonder if Elke's family was rich, or if she somehow managed to snag a scholarship that the current Meadowviewer had not be able to.

When she got close enough to her classmate (from Barren Pines that is), she seemed to droop over and started to pant slightly, causing a drizzle of fog to escape from her mouth. Yvette had never been the most athletic, that much was obvious.

"Elke!" she panted out in her tiny voice. "It... is good... to see... you!"

Elke's family was rich. This much was kind of obvious by the quality of her coat, the shininess of her shoes, and the fact that the plate of apple cake was not, in fact, on a plate at all but in a tin. Not just any tin, but a classy tin, one that screamed wealth and taste.

(There was a guy in a suit across the street. He looked like a brick wall of protective angst; if asked, Elke would look and then explain, perfectly cheerful, that his name was Bastien and he was going back to France tomorrow but Papa had wanted to have a few days to catch up where he knew she was safe.)

"It's good to see you too," she said brightly, wrapping her free arm around the purple-haired girl. "I missed you lots--how have you been?"

It wouldn't do to remind Yvette of any of the bad things that had happened. Elke's warm smile faltered for a moment, but then it came back when she remembered that she didn't have to remind anyone of anything. Yvette wouldn't remember the zombie monsters or the fire or anything. Elke didn't know if Yvette remembered anything at all--beyond Elke, anyway. "I brought apple cake," she said--brightly.

As Elke seemed to hug onto her, Yvette's cheeks grew quite rosy. It might have seemed as if the exercise had caused the flush in the girl's face, but in all honesty, it was just the intimate contact. "I m-missed you too!" she somehow managed to get out before growing a bit quiet. It was obvious this girl was not used to others being this friendly with her. It was a welcome change, but at the same time, it was going to take some getting used to.

After a bit of silence and some deep cleansing breaths (though not overly deep so she could avoid catching Elke's attention) she was calm enough to answer the question. "I've been pretty busy playing 'catch up' with everything." She had to take placement tests, tend to redecorating her room (under a budget of 25 dollars), listen to all sorts of stories of things that had happened while she was away, and now, go to school. It was enough to make Yvette's head spin.

"Apple cake?" she repeated after the girl, looking at her eyes curiously. Obviously, Elke was planning on meeting someone, so it was probably a gift for them. Hoping to not seem too nosy, she asked as politely as she could "Who did you bring it for?" Apple cake sounded delicious, but it wasn't her place to ask about it.

"Yeah, it totally sucks, right?" Elke was still smiling, despite the allegations of catching up to everything sucking. It did suck. She was a sophomore, though. No child of Edmund Arma's was getting held back, death or no death!

She was setting an excellent example for Voirrey, really.

With a glance back up to the school, she confirmed none of her Zodiac friends were coming out. So, she looked back to Yvette, green eyes overbright. "Well, it was for my brother. But he's apparently not coming out right now." Maybe he hadn't been in school today? She could go visit later. "You can have it, if you want it," she said, holding out the tin to Yvette.

It was almost unbearably deja-vu-y. They'd practically met over loud typing and apple cake.

Yvette's eyes shot open as wide as they could at Elke's offer. They looked to the tin, then looked back to Elke's face, then back to the tin, and finally stopped somewhere looking at her toes in the snowy slush. Her cheeks were scarlet in color.

"Oh n-n-no! I c-couldn't do th-that!" she squeaked out in a flustered fashion. "Y-y-you sh-should s-save it for him. It... it really i-isn't m-my place to take it..." Her voice grew quiet, and her eyes shyly attempted to look to the short haired girl again. Her voice might have been saying "No thank you," but her eyes were far more truthful. Her deep purple eyes had always been so expressive, and right now they were saying "That sounds so delicious, thank you."

She tossed her hair, holding out the tin. "You can too, if he's gonna be a meanie-face and forget he promised to hang out with me today then I'm going to give my apple cake to someone who appreciates it more!"

Elke knew that kind of look. It was the kind of look she herself sometimes gave her dad when she was trying to pretend she didn't want something she did want. And that was never a good feeling because, if you didn't get the thing, you always wondered if just taking it would have worked out better than saying that you didn't want it. "Are you sure you don't want it?"

Well, that explanation didn't help the situation any. Yvette was going to be a tool for a family feud (of very minor proportions). Yvette did not much like the notion of being a tool for a family feud. Yvette had no siblings, but she had heard that sibling squabbles of any sort were the worst things in the world.

Her eyes fell onto the tin again, the temptation there once again to offer her hands out and take the treat. Her sweet tooth was telling her it was okay, but that overactive brain of hers was shouting (in an also tiny voice) at her that it was not a very nice thing to do. She was literally taking food out of some boy's mouth. The guilt would consume her for probably a few days at least.

"I'd love it," she honestly confessed, "but it isn't meant for me. I. I know you mean well, but I'd f-feel bad." The girl's fingers weren't helping much either, partially out as if she wanted to take the tin off Elke's hands, but also so close to Yvette's body that it didn't look like she was reaching out at all. They twitched slightly on occasion.

A sigh, and Elke placed the tin gently on Yvette's head. She smiled, brightly, and said, "Grayson didn't even know I was bringing it, and he can't miss what he didn't know he was getting, huh?" With an over-exaggerated wink--hey, go big or go home!--she took her hands off the tin. Either Yvette would balance it, or she would grab it, or it would fall and hey, if that happened Elke would... do... something. Logic. She didn't do well with logic.

"Don't fall over, now," she said happily, tucking her hands into her pockets. Huh. Maybe her hands were just cold? "I mean, apple cake doesn't break, but be careful all the same."

It was a well-known fact, with people who knew her well, that she would agitate you until you did what she wanted. Talking to Elke was like taking a bath in a sand blaster. It hurt, but you came out pretty damn clean.

Maybe.

"How've you been, Yvette," asked Elke, her voice, if not her tone, bright.

Yvette literally squeaked after she found a tin set on her head. Fortunately, she was no klutz and managed to scoop the tin off of her head within seconds. She tucked the tin under her arm, still seeming a bit uncertain about the whole ordeal.

"Wait, G-grayson is your brother?" To her, that didn't make sense, since Elke's last name was Arma, and Grayson's last name was Graves.

She couldn't help but glance down to her watch, then tossing her glance towards her bus stop. There was still time to continue the conversation, but she still needed to make sure to keep an eye out for that bus. "Good, I guess. What about you, Elke? Is school treating you okay?"

Elke was giggling. Of course she was giggling; it was like, the bluenette's sole appreciable purpose in life, to giggle at everything and make it out to be all right. "Grayson is my brother," she confirmed, then after a moment's thought her eyes widened and she clarified: "Not by blood, noooo, we aren't even like. Sixth cousins five times removed, or something. But he and his family kind of adopted me when I came over from France? He is the older brother I wished I had and now I do have. We watch movies together, and Dad and Pop never ask what I'm doing over when I'm there. It's nice!"

She smiled, brightly. "School is okay. I'm in Spanish V, with the seniors, because I'm awesome. Do you need to catch your bus? I'll walk you over there, if you like!"
PostPosted: Tue Jan 12, 2010 12:16 am

Initially at the beginning of her companion's giggling, her eyes sank to the ground again, as if retreating. Yet the full explanation caused her to look up again, an understanding smile upon her lips. "Oh, okay!"

The mention of her Spanish class made the shyer girl's eyes pop open wide. Yvette had managed to take 2 years of Spanish, and after a year break, she had practically forgotten all of it. Five years of Spanish just sounded inhumane at best. How in the world could Elke stomach it?! She was amazing. Yvette's vision almost seemed to add some sparkles around her friend's face. "Wow, that must be a tough class, Elke! I'm impressed!" At the mention of the bus, she nodded her head. Rather carefully, the girl shifted her new tin so she was holding in front of her, against her bosom. She began to lead the way to the bus stop, making certain to not take hurried steps, since the slush on the ground would make it so easy to accidentally slip. In her quiet voice, she offered a sincere "Thanks, it's always nice to have someone to talk to."

She looped her arm through Yvette's, glad for a minute that she had decided to add the because I'm awesome. Calling herself awesome like that was rare, because she usually didn't feel awesome, but sometimes to get the reassurance she needed she had to push it.

Right?

"Not really. I like languages," said Elke. She shook her head, and didn't seem to be really careful about the slush, which led to slipping around; she let go of Yvette to trip back along the path they'd already walked, then ran forward to slide the rest of the way to the bus stop.

Of course she was giggling again.

"What's your schedule like, Yvette? D'you have any fun classes?"
PostPosted: Tue Jan 12, 2010 7:35 pm

One moment, she was carefully making her way to the bus stop, the next, she had her arm looped through Elke's and was somewhat forced into a small sliding motion. Before she had time to protest, the girl had already let go of her arm and continued to slide down towards her bus stop. How this girl was so playful and energetic was a bit mind-baffling to the ever reserved Yvette.

"No, really! That is amazing to me!" she said, continuing on the discussion about languages. "I really didn't do well with my Spanish classes when I took them, and I don't even really remember most of it now!" A few of her infamous gerbil giggles escaped her as Elke continued with her silly little display, but she eventually tried to muffle it when she heard another question.

"Oh, um... I have a math class, science, English, Econ, and two art classes. It's a bit of a light load I suppose, but that's because I'm a senior. I just wish they had more home ec classes that were more advanced though." She sighed. It would have been nice to have a class where she could sew things, but alas, the level of the Home Ec class at Meadowview was very low and would be pointless for her to take. Not wanting to seem completely self absorbed, she returned the question. "Do you have any fun classes this session, Elke?"

"Sounds like a lot of work to me," grumped Elke, then she brightened up to continue: "And yeah, of course I do! I'm in Spanish, aren't I? I get to start Russian when I pass my fluency test for Spanish, but that won't be until next year. Don't you think that's unfair? I think when I'm done with a course I should be able to drop it and get credit if I can pass the final, but noooo..."

She sat on the bench, smiling at Yvette's laughter. There. She had done a good thing, there, with the making Yvette laugh. That was how you were supposed to do it. "Well, if you don't get lots of homework, you can use the time to do home ec-y stuff at home, couldn't you? That's what I would do. I wanna see if I can find someone to teach me know to knit or something." You could stab people with knitting needles, right? Hmph.

With a carefree shrug, she crossed her ankles and said, "I've also got Art Since 1945, which sounds like it'll be fun, don't you think? I hear the teacher's a pervert, though, which won't be fun at all. But I ought to do okay at English, too..."

"Are you going home, Yvette?"
