As the sun arose above the eastern mountains that lay behind the castle, the snow on the ground began to sparkle. The shining white made the day even brighter than usual. Birds began to chirp, and things began to wake up, from hearing these small creature's songs. It had started to snow late in the previous night. The wind had picked up, and sight had vanished. But now the land was at peace. The mountains had more than a cap of snow. The ruins retained their mystery, and only appeared more dazzling, with the white blanket upon them. The snow helped the castle looked very much the way it used to, when Leader had ruled. Truly, the land of Learania was beautiful.

Outside the capital of Eyris, were several other different cities, and many other smaller villages. Not far west of Eyris lies Fefga Manor, though not many people go there anymore, since the last guildaversary. Not too far south-east from Eyris, there is a large lake. By this lake, is a small village. (You may know of Alihi, who lives in that village, with her family) Though the village may be small, it is well known for one major thing: the lake, in winter time.

You see, during winter, still bodies of water tend to do a wonderful and mysterious thing. Almost overnight, the water becomes solid, allowing people to walk upon it. This lake also freezes, and people tend to make good use of it. Every year, people come from nearby villages and cities to have their fun on the ice. They play various games, take in the scenery, or just put on the most ingenious footwear that has a blade on the bottom, and glide.

And of course, the guild members go. They tend to be the most numerous and lively ones there, almost as if everybody else was faceless. Today was a new day, the first day of the new year. The time to start the year off with good fun, was here.

Well what so bad about a little coin toss now and then?

I'm betting my happiness life on this one

Joshua had a hangover.... he'd gone to sleep right when he got home, but when he woke up discovered he'd only slept for about three to four hours. With a pounding headache and nothing to do, Joshua figured he'd go for a walk.

It turned out to be much longer then he expected, but that was fine- like most from Jehanna (Most from Magvel really), he had rarely had a chance to see snow. Although most would expect the king of a desert to complain about snow, Joshua found he was enjoying his first extended amount of time in it. The cold air was helping his hangover, and soon it was nearly gone as he tromped through the snow.

He was wearing clothes like the ones he had worn last night- but these were thicker and more padded to keep heat in- along with a pair of skates he had bought (Err did I say buy.... Joshua never bought things.... he cajoled people into making a bet and then won things from them....) a few days ago from a man claiming that he'd get the full winter experience.

He was looking for a place to test out the bladed shoes and had asked a few passerby’s where a good place would be.

Soon he found the spot everyone had kept suggesting to him and found it quite full of people, most of them skating and having all sorts of fun- he wanted to join them. Sitting in the snow, Joshua pulled off his boots and strapped on the skates the way he'd been shown.

"Ok, nice and steady." He waddled/walked to the ice and stepped down on it, expecting it to break and dump him in the water. Of course it didn't... nobody would be unlucky enough to fall in on the first step.

The second step had the swordmaster entirely on the ice; it was at this point that he realized that he didn't know what to do next, so he just concentrated on staying in the exact same spot, wind milling his arms now and then to keep his balance. When he swayed to one side, suddenly he stumbled forward and- not knowing what to do- started doing a weird little hop run on the ice.

From anyone watching it would be funny; a tall man with red hair and a hat looking like he was dancing on the ice. Anyone who knew Joshua would probably fall over laughing, as this seemed nothing like the usually sure-footed swordfighter. From Joshua's point of view he was in mortal danger, unable to stop he careened around the ice, twisting and turning without actually skating. While by some miracle he hadn’t crashed into anyone or anything, he wasn’t above yelling for help when he needed it…. And right now he needed it, so shout he did.

“Move! Get outta the way!”

-Ephraim-

"Ciela!! Get back here!!"

If it was one thing Ephraim hated, it was taking the damn wolf out because she'd run around wanting to play. Rolling in the snow did not help either, no way was Ephraim cleaning up the mess she made in the house again. His white boots gathered up bits and pieces of snow as he walked around trying to retrieve this 'pet' of his and Kishuna's.

Seriously what the hell, why did it follow them and how did it follow them in the first place? Ephraim gave up, he knelt over, hands on his knees and simply watched in annoyance as the ever so energetic wolf jumped and rolled in the snow.

Ciela rolled against the snow, scratching at her neck fiercely. She did not like the collar the couple had given her and was trying ever so hard to get it off. It itched, it was uncomfortable and she hated it. Ciela let out a soft sneeze then barked at the prince before continueing to scratch at the leather object.

Ephraim took this chance and dived toward her, yanking at the back of her collar and pulled the animal toward him. "You're a real trouble maker..."

Shouting and screams were heard. He had forgotten there was a lake open for gliding should one choose to. There were games being held and wel- well that was something new....he watched as Joshua glided across the ice, screaming citizens moving out of his way as soon as possible and then..he face planted what looked like a tree. He almost pitied the Jehanna King...but then again..Ephraim didn't have a say in it..he'd probably end up falling on his butt.

The tree was approaching fast, and Joshuas luck had run out, run-skidding with one hand planted firmly on his head to keep his hat where it was supposed to be, and the other out in front of him like a foot-ball quarter back, he frantically waved people out of his way soon, (as was inevitable) he ran out of ice.

The second he hit the snow he used his free hand to cover his eyes, attempting to will himself to be able to pass through solid objects in a last ditch effort to avoid the tree, he would have to depend entirely on Lady Luck to somehow make him transparent.

Needless to say this tactic failed, and the King of Jehanna plowed into the tree, removing his hands from his head and twisting his torso at the last second so his chest would take the brunt of the blow rather than his face.... still this was one of the most painful things he ever experienced, and he even stuck to the tree a moment before collapsing on his back staring up at the sky.

"Ow," He croaked out before a bunch of snow that had been in the tree fell, causing him to be buried underneath it. Not enough to put Joshua in danger of suffocating of course.... just enough though that it turned a worse situation.... errr even more worse.

Joshua lay in the snow for a minute or so with a few on lookers gawking at what they assumed was now a dead body, suddenly a hand shot up from out of the snow and gave all the spectators a giant thumbs up. At this sight and to the news that the stranger was okay, many different reactions could be observed; some laughed, others sighed with relief and still others (Probably the ones he'd won money from) grumbled.

The swordsman picked himself up and shook the snow off like a dog would water, thankfully whoever had made his jacket had the good sense to make it water proof, so he wasn't soaked through, and he hadn't even hit the tree as hard as he thought. Already he could breathe again, and a quick check revealed only some very painful cuts, bruises, and a bit of swelling.

A quick glance back to the ice and all the fun everyone seemed to be having made up his mind, he would try again, determinedly striding back towards the ice. What kind of King would give up after one bad crash! Not him, this time though he stopped before going onto the ice, and watched the skaters trying to see if he could pick up the technique like that.

Course if someone came up and tried to teach him that would make things a lot easier.

What was he going to do?

The young lord sighed as he skated slowly on the ice, his hands in the pockets of his fiery red jacket. He had a red scarf around his neck, white snow pants, and ice skates with red shoestrings. While he wasn't really good at it, he could at least keep his balance a move around a little, unlike some other redhead swordman who struggled to keep his balance and would probably crash into something, making a scene all the while.

Skating was a good idea for taking a break. After all, the young lord had a restless night (especially after what happened last night) and couldn't really do much to lift him out of his depression of sorts. With skating, at least it would give some good training with maneuverability and such.

Well, back to the problem at hand. What was he going to do? He supposed he should be thankful that he was just stuck between those two girls, and not every female he had gotten to know during the campaign back in Elibe, from Lilina to Lalum to Thany to Sue to Sophia to Celicia. Plus, if he were to add whatever other girls happened to have feelings of some sort for him here in Learania, it would just be a huge mess.

Yes...it was good that he only had to worry about two girls...for the time being. ...What was he doing? He had gone off on a tangent and wasn't even directly looking at the issue anymore! Roy shook his head and sighed as he skated around just a little more.

"What to do..." he muttered, looking up at the sky as he weaved his way around.

~Ninian~

Ninian took a deep breath, relishing the feeling of the cool air in her lungs. Winter was always her favorite season, and not simply because of the cold. The Ice Dragon loved the snow, and the dancer loved something else, too-- ice skating.

Wearing a shorter dress underneath her coat (though the coat, while warm, was not nearly as thick as the coats the humans would be wearing) to prevent her legs getting tangled in her dress, and also to prevent her skates from snagging the fabric, Ninian pushed off, sailing across the frozen lake. Her balance was a bit shaky at first--it had been a whole year since she'd last skated, after all--but she soon remembered the gentle movements and subtle adjustments necessary to keep herself steady. Gracefully, she shoved off the ice, spinning twice around in the air, and landing solidly, continuing around the lake. The dancer smiled; today was going to be a good day.

After all, just yesterday, the ever-worried healers had pronounced her completely healed, finally removing the last of the bandages for good. Not used to the depth perception, it had taken her a bit to get used to seeing out of two eyes instead of one. There was only a faint scar, barely noticeable as it was hidden behind her bangs, above her left eye. Hopefully, no one would notice it, and perhaps it would even fade away. If not, it would be a mark of what she had lost and gained in order to get it.

For now, Ninian thought only of skating and the feel of the brisk air as it blew past her. Normally, she would have been at her job at the Hostess Club, but she had taken a few days off starting the previous day in order to have the time to get used to seeing again. Depth perception was a wonderous thing indeed. She was looking forward to returning to work though. Having too many days off got boring.

Re-acclimated to the gentle one-two-three, one-two-three motion, Ninian gazed around the lake. She was not the only one here taking advantage of what the cold had done to the water, though she only recognized a few. A red-haired man she remembered seeing before--and who obviously had never ice skated before in his life--was crashing into a tree. Ephraim was chasing after a puppy that looked more wolf than dog. And there was Roy, skating slowly across the ice. His troubled expression worried her, but if her wanted to talk about whatever was bothering him, then he would do so. She would simply wait and be there for him should he need her.

For now, the dancer did another lap around the lake, jumping and spinning twice in quick succession when no one was near her, just because she could. So long as she could ice skate, the Ice Dragon didn't mind being stuck in human form one bit. She had loved to ice skate ever since she was a child, and either she had been too sick or the winters had been too warm for her to skate in Pherae. Thus Ninian would enjoy the ice and the skating while it lasted.

Well, the New Year's party had been a bust. It felt like the moment he had arrived, the festivities had ended. Perhaps Morgan shouldn't have struck up a conversation with that man and then fallen asleep at the bar. He felt rather ashamed as well; he had bothered him and then went out cold on him at the same rate.

Speaking of cold, even through the thick fur-lined clothes he wore, the frigid air still bit at him like tiny demons. The port town in Carcino where he had grown up had never been near as cold as this. And it never snowed either. As he walked on, admiring the bare trees and how lovely the sun shining off the frozen branches were, he suddenly lost his footing and fell face first onto what seemed like a giant glass window in the ground. Confused, he brushed on gloved hand across its surface. Perfectly smooth.

Odd, he thought. I didn't know ground could end up like this. Never seen anything much like this before. He tried to stand up again, but once again ended up crashing to the strange frozen thing once more. Ok. So if at first you don't succeed, try again right? Crash! Same outcome. One more time then. Bang! Ouch...

The cycle repeated like this, with Morgan murmuring curses in his native tongue progressivly louder with each failure. These theatrics probably looked strange and amusing to anyone passing by who was more experienced with ice.

The young lord broke out of his thoughts when he noticed someone familiar skating nearby. He weaved around the other skaters before he pulled up next to his mother. Roy put on a smile, just for her.

"Good morning, Mother. Did you have a happy new year?" he asked her softly.

He then noticed she no longer had any more bandages on her. While he had noticed the number decreasing over the past two months he stayed with his family, he didn't notice until now that she had fully recovered.

"I'm glad to see you're all healed up, Mother. Is it okay for you to be skating though?"

He was genuinely concerned about Ninian's well-being.

Forgotten Morph

PostPosted: Mon Jan 04, 2010 6:44 pm

Hmm, it was a bit nippy out. The morph noticed this, striding through the snow; he left only light footprints. Today, he was actually wearing a cloak, along with a shirt. Even he wasn't a big fan of winter, it make his reactions and his movements slower. Being a morph had its upsides; but he still wasn't immune to cold. But, why not have some fun? He was relatively sure Ephraim was around here, though. He seemed to be growing a sixth sense about it. Or something. Or maybe he was just a bit of a stalker, that could be the answer too.

Anyway, there was a frozen pond here, it looked like. And people, citizens and guild members alike, glid across it - or, in many cases, fell into it, rolled across it, or things of the like. The morph chuckled; he couldn't remember ever having been that clumsy. It had been a LONG time since he had been human, so it wasn't exactly the easiest memory. In any case, he'd have to mess with a few of these here~ so he stepped forward, pulling a vial of some liquid from an inner pocket. This he opened, seating himself to spread the substance across the soles of his boots; and then he stood again, stepping onto the ice. With a push, he slid across the ice with almost frictionless ease; the liquid had been sold to him by a man in a strange little shop, who promised it would work very well for something of this sort. And, strangely enough, it did. He was able to move across the ice without the use of skates. How nice.

So, he took a few laps of the pond; and once his speed was up, he turned to the middle and rushed forward. A young woman screamed, ducking to the ground as he slid in her direction. But before the impact, the morph disappeared in a flash of crimson light, appearing at the opposite end of the pond and still traveling the same speed. He cackled wildly, doing the same thing again just before another impact. Ah, too fun~

However, after a few rounds of this the morph got sloppy. Or perhaps he just missed. So instead of reappearing on the ice, he reappeared in front of Ephraim... with all the momentum kept from his racing across the ice. So, the prince got treated to a rather nice view of Kishuna falling flat on his face in the snow. There was no speech for a moment, then a muffled stream of curses could be heard, slightly distorted by all the frozen water Kishuna's face was now buried in.

-Ephraim-

Once Ephraim had gotten Ciela to calm down and actually behave, he let her go play in the snow once more. It had been a while since she was out to run around anyhow. He chuckled quietly, playing with the wolf as she wouldn't leave him alone. Annoyed him from time to time but hey, Ciela is still a pup, it can't be helped.

His hands weren't that cold surprisingly, but probably because he hadn't touched the snow with his hands just yet. But even then he was wearing gloves. The hood over his head was pretty warm on his head and despite what he was wearing, he didn't feel any sort of chill.

He turned, keeping an eye on the wolf..but also in time to see a familier figure suddenly appear and land face down into the snow. Ephraim stared for a moment, realizing it was Kishuna. He snickered quietly, a small smile forming across his lips, he was holding back a lot, trying so hard not to laugh at the morph's sudden entrance. In a matter of seconds, Ephraim burst out laughing, unable to keep it bottled up anymore. He laughed and laughed, to the point where he started to get cramps on his stomach.

"K-Kish..You...You...pft..! Ha ha!" oh he had gone crazy already, but that entrance was just hilarious and not what the prince had been expecting when the morph said 'I'll meet you there'. He turned, facing away from Kishuna and took a deep breath. Once he regained himself, turned back to the morph and burst out laughing once more.

Ok Ok, get real now, your boyfriend is face planted into the snow..help the poor guy up. Ephraim knelt down to the morph and grabbed his arm, helping him to his feet. "A-Are..you ok...? ... Pft..!" keep it together Ephraim...not good to laugh but its just too hilarious, especially if it was your loved one.

The winters in Bern didn't have much on a good old-fashioned Ilian winter, but the land was still pretty darn cold if you knew where to look. Near the peaks in particular, one could find many a good solid frozen lake, and on days when winter storms weren't keeping everyone locked indoors, the winter sports were in abundance!

Usually, Jin preferred to wear all black, and ice skating was no exception--black ice skates, thick black pants, and a heavy black coat. The one exception was a yellow scarf, tucked away in the hood--it made him look a bit like a bumblebee, but darn it all, he was not going to be cold!

It took him a few minutes to remember the technique, but after finally gaining enough momentum without fearing the wrath of gravity, the rest was simple--move your legs every now and again to keep the speed at a constant, and things would be fine!

...At least, so he thought until he skated a bit too fast and learned that his body couldn't keep up with his feet...

"Whoah!"

And Jin's legs went forward from under him, and the Sage flipped backward about 90 degrees, landing firmly on his back and sliding several feet before he halted.

It might have been clumsy, but Jin couldn't help but laugh as he got up. There was just something funny and perfectly harmless about landing on your bum--probably all the clothes, he supposed, picking up speed once again.

My memories are doubting me...

Cold weather wasn't exactly Annis' thing. She preferred warm summer evenings, the kind where going to bed in just your underclothes felt just right; warm, but not to where you would burn up even if you had access to a steady stream of cool air.

The weather today, however, was made up for by the way everything just looked so... nice. The snow covering the grass made a fine white blanket over all the dirt and dead leaves and... it was pretty. Annis liked it. She tucked her hands into her jacket pockets and let her breath come out in a fine mist through her nose, watching the unfamiliar man off in the distance wearing all black (save for that scarf) try to ice skate. And, well, fail. She giggled, flapping her wings twice to get the blood circulating through them before fluttering closer to the lake.

She hadn't thought to bring some ice skates--or buy any, for that matter--but she could enjoy the weather. And if all else failed, a well-placed snowball to the skull livened anything up.

FWOOSH! The red blur shot by Roy and Ninian at a speed that most would consider breakneck, he doubted if they’d even notice more then his tail wind.

The Brightside, Joshua had learned to go, the down side, Joshua had neglected learning about stopping, personally he thought he deserved some slack... this was the first time he'd ever been on ice before... how could he have known that all though he had mastered going at a mediocre pace and not falling down that speeding up was much easier than slowing down..... And now he had passed some other unfortunate who had fallen as well. Joshua couldn't get a good look at him before he passed but he got the impression that the man was wearing a yellow scarf but otherwise clad in black.

Oh joy, it looked like he wouldn't have to worry about stopping anymore.

For dead ahead in his path there was a snow bank and he was about to get a crash course in stopping, "FUWAH!" He cried out as his skates hit the bottom of the snow bank, despite his feet stopping the rest of his body kept moving and flying over the top of the bank, he landed face first in the snow... sliding forwards about an extra foot and leaving a body shaped skid mark behind him. He came to a rest face down and with his knees bent and his feet dangling above his back.

"I'm thinking I'm getting the hang of this." He mumbled, picking himself up and knocking the snow off his clothes for the second time that morning, though this time something was different, his hat had flown farther than he had and was now resting at the feet of a girl with wings. Joshua couldn’t see her all to well with the snow and slush in his eyes so he raised a hand to his face and quickly wiped it, the cold making rosy blossoms on his face

"Hey! Err.... you mind tossing me my hat?" He called out walking towards the apparent Laguz.

~Ninian~

Skating around the various people, Ninian smiled softly. It wasn't even snowing at the moment, and yet she was the happiest she'd been in a long time. Meandering around the lake, she almost didn't notice Roy right next to her until he spoke.

"Good morning, Mother. Did you have a happy new year?" he asked, smiling.

Mentally she frowned. Why does his smile seem . . . forced? she wondered. Perhaps it's nothing. . . .

"Yes, I did," answered, smiling back at the young swordsman. "I'm sorry I couldn't attend the Host Club Party, but as a member of the Hostess Club . . . That, and the healers would not let me attend, I'm afraid."

About to answer his next question, Ninian got an idea. Pushing harder, she moved ahead of Roy, executing another double spin jump. Still smiling, she shifted to skate backwards, looping around to skate beside Roy once more.

"I'm perfectly fine now," she said, though hopefully her display had made that obvious. "The healers pronounced me completely well two days ago, though they did not take the last of the bandages off until yesterday and they would not let me leave the infirmary until I had gotten used to seeing with both eyes once again. They can't stop me from skating. And please, don't worry; if anything is wrong, I'll stop immediately. I promise." She smiled wider. "It seems you're not very good at skating, are you? It's too bad Pherae's winters were not colder."

Without warning, a blur shot past the mother and son. Keeping her balance and managing not to break her rhythm, Ninian watched as the blur kept moving, sailing right into a snow bank on the other side of the lake. The dancer giggled. "At least you can skate better than him! Oh, I do hope he's alright." She knew how deceptively soft the snow could be.

Deciding that the man was most likely unhurt, Ninian turned her attention back to Roy. "How have you been?" she asked. "And how was your New Year's? Did you attend the party?"

Roy listened to his mother speak and he nodded slowly. He could understand the healers holding her back, being worrywarts. But Hostess Club duties...? He did recall seeing a few of the Hostesses at the party last night, but decided not to say anything about it.

He then watched in surprise (and awe, he will admit) as his mother sped ahead and performed a double spin jump, then skate backwards...backwards to end up next to him. Just how awesome was that? He pulled his hands out of his pockets to give her a round of applause for the trick. That was all he needed to know that she was okay.

"It's good to know you're okay now, Mother." he said with a small nod. "Good...I don't want you to get hurt right when the new year began, so please be careful."

He then nodded slowly at her comment concerning skating. "I'm learning, at least. That counts for something, right? I didn't mind the winters back home, but I'm sure you would have wanted something a little colder. If it was colder back home, you could have taught me how to ice skate a little. I'd probably be nowhere as good as you, though."

He felt a blur rush past the two and panicked for a moment, only to see Ninian keep her balance. He sighed in relief, then carefully spun around so he could look at the poor fool who lost control and crash. He laughed gently. "I guess that's one good thing, huh?" he said before he nodded, looking back at the person. It was Joshua. "Yeah...hope he's okay."

He spun around carefully again so he was skating forwards instead of backwards and glanced over at his mother, who was asking about his New Year's. He figured she didn't know about some of the events, so he decided to keep the info about him drinking with his uncles quiet.

"It was rather enjoyable. I got to hang out with both my Uncles at the Host Party, and..." he caught himself and looked away, the smile fading. "Some stuff happened..." he looked back up at Ninian. "But don't worry Mother...I'll be all right." he forced a smile.
