North Sprawl Suburbia, wide as you can see. 'Nuff said.

Carter City's suburbia, home to small children and their families. No roof in sight looked the same: some were flat, some jutted with slender points into the sky. On the top of the roof of 136 Woodside, a charming little ranch-style with pale green shutters and cream paint on its walls, a tiny circle of golden light appeared. Slowly the tiny dot of magic swam around on the tiles that formed the roof, tracing the arcane symbol for "Wind", a stylized spiral inscribed within a circle. When the rune was complete, it pulsed with residual power, and a swift gale from the clear sky swept through the northern sprawl of Carter City, depositing three figures on the roof seemingly from midair.
They were an odd bunch, a silver-haired demoness with a sharp disposition, a lanky wind mage in street clothes and wearing a dreamy-eyed expression, and a large, black...cat? They were Team Charbroil.
"Well, we're here." Truewind said, smiling amiably. He turned to look at his companions, the demoness in particular, and asked, "So, fearless leader, where to?"

Flare surveyed the land around her, glancing about with crimson eyes. "The south seems empty, nothing but broken houses and a field beyond, it looks like. We'll venture into the city to the north...cautiously, by air. You and Owle should go by foot, though...I don't want to tax your energies early on.
"Owle, I want you to begin scouting, like we discussed. True? Will it be much trouble to lift her?"

Owle gave a plaintive little mew, but obeyed, slowly spooling out the snakes that lay coiled around her mind. Slowly, carefully, a dozen of them set out, searching for minds through Carter City.

"Understood." Truewind replied, and his red eyes flared with crimson light. A book emblazoned with the words Das Gust sprang from his hands and leaped into the air behind him, where it stayed, hovering.
"Guard." whispered the wind mage, and the book quivered in place, then went completely rigid, as though somehow it was watching.
:Sophi? Ender?: Truewind sent out tendrils of thought to the wind sprites hidden in his pockets.
:What's up, T-dubs?: replied the male, spring out of the mage's jacket pocket. The female followed swiftly, looking up at her friend quizzically.
:I'd like the two of you to scout out the area for me. Sophi, go south, Ender, southwest. Be swift, I don't like to be without you for long.:
Nodding, the two spirits fled the area, heading in different directions.

Um...True? Owle asked, over a mental link. She had padded over to the edge of the roof, and was looking like nothing so much as a cat stuck up a tree. The ground looked so far away...How do I get down?

Flare leapt off the roof, her midnight black wings opening to their full span. She began gliding lazily toward the northwest, stalling to give Owle and Truewind time to follow. She didn't like sitting here, waiting for robots to converge on them and god knows what else other filth was in this city.

There are people to the northwest of us, Owle sent. One, I think. Or two. I'll see if I can find out more.

Blinking owlishly, True shook himself and grinned. "Sorry about that, Owle. I'll get us down in a jif."
Clasping his book to his chest, he raised an arm, and spoke, "Vente vade", and an invisible plane of air firmed beneath their feet, lifting into the air and carrying them swiftly to the ground.
"Okay, so we were going to head northwest?" said the wind mage, his eyes glazing over again as he resumed rapport with his sprites. "Could you lead the way, Owle?"

Alright, Owle said, loping along the ground to the northwest. There were people there, but I think they've moved on.
It seemed so peaceful now...was all that going to change in the next few moments?

It's about time, Flare sent to both of them, gliding off to the northwest. I thought they would nuke the city before the two of you got moving.
