I just uploaded two new pics that I was quite proud of and within 5 mins of posting them. I was down to a rating of 3 on both. The other ones I have posted are all below a three. It kills me how much brutality that thing has! course this could be just me....

without a doubt, i say that they are the harshest B!"#$ in the know world. they will critize you on EVERYTHING and take points, for example Oh your scarf is nice, but i think it would have been better in red than blue, 3 points. Yup, they are all As"#..........

Honestly, the people who rate art here are idiots. You can say exactly what you're drawing in your description and they'll still go "i dunt get it lolz." The only way to get good ratings is to draw anime style and try to appeal to 10 year olds, which really isn't worth it. Don't take it to heart.

Frankly, I think professional critics are easier to impress. ._. Most of the people here on Gaia are kids who really aren't old enough to be on it. They don't have anything else to do. I find most of the Gaians annoying, and I'm glad when I can find someone who's literate. I'm one to talk, though, because I'm only 13. BI
So I wouldn't be surprised if you get harsh comments. Kids are vicious. =- =;;

Just to point this out, it was within the first 5 minutes. Really, how many people could've rated? 1-4 at most, i would think. Now, with your other pics, well, there are a**es on gaia that don't know crap about art. Me? I haven't put a pic up yet, but when i go to the art arenas, i see A LOT of good art. On average, i rate em 4-5 stars because i don't know if i could draw what they drew. And art has a huge variety: realism, anime, line, perspective, splat, etc, etc... When i see a pic that i really like and i know a lot about that kind of art but there is a flaw, i don't bang the person with insults; i look at the comments and see if anyone had stated anything about it, and if not, i give constructive criticism. kinda hard to do when i don't know how the person would take it, but that's what i try to do. i'd love to see your pics if you could post a link or something...

Oh, man. You asked for it...
I couldn't fit my whole comment in the arena, so I figured I'd tell you here:
Overall, like I said, I liked it. Also like I said, my only faults were with the shield arm and her 'neck' (I put neck in quotes because her neck isn't actually in the picture, and I'm talking about it theoretically). The shield arm isn't as long as her raised arm, and that shoulder juts out further than it should for the angle the body's at. The forearm looks like it could be foreshortened, but in that case, her hand is in the wrong position. In either case though, her upper arm is still too short. Her 'neck', also, isn't long enough. The way her head is, it looks like she's kind of awkwardly leaning just her head forward and sticking her nose into her arm. The way the rest of her looks, I think you should be able to see her whole head.
In the end, though, I think it looks like a pretty darn good picture.
Sorry for the obnoxious criticism. I used to be a pretty big art student and my favorite teacher made us slave over anatomy for months after he found out that half the class couldn't draw a face. Needless to say, we got good at nitpicking.
I usually find that, when want to make a pose you're not sure about, try and do it yourself in front of a mirror. If it hurts or you just can't get it, scrap the pose idea, and figure something else out. Sometimes with anime style drawing, if you can get the pose yourself, it's okay to exaggerate it a little in the drawing. The key is knowing how much to 'exaggerate'. Too much, and your viewer will feel awkward too, simply because the person doesn't look to be in a human position. Like when you look at contortionists. You cringe because you just can't imagine a body moving like that.
Anyway, I hope that made any kind of sense. redface

Honestly instead of having the rate go up and down with each vote they should be added by numbers 1 star one point to 5 points
also, people but a lot of work on the art they submit. the VERY LEAST people can do is give an honest, but encouraging opinion. If not they can slam their fingers in a car door for all i care.

Anyway, I hope that made any kind of sense. redface its not obnoxious its constructive. I need that more often. I knew that back arm had something wrong I just couldn't seem to get it right. and yes it makes perfect sense. heres another. the rest of them after this one are older. so they I know have alot problems.... any ways this was only alittle older. http://www.gaiaonline.com/arena/art/painting-and-drawing/vote/?entry_id=101922439

Omg, you're really good at drawing. To tell you the truth, the only mistakes you have are hardly noticible, especially in the older one. These pictures are really, really good, better than what i see normally. I don't see how people could rate low on your drawings.

Not that you'll ever read this, in all probability, but hey.
Anyways, three isn't that bad. Think of the numerical scale as a sliding scale of flaws, the highest number meaning no flaws, and the lowest meaning loaded chalk full of them. People, when subjected to the lower end of the numerical rating scales, be it art or avatar, often forget exactly what the numbers mean. Five is outright perfect, and should be reserved for just that- not every twit with a half decent hand. Three is average, and from the looks of the picture, it's just that. There are things that look fairly good, and at the same time, large and obvious flaws.
