EDIT:

Sorry for this yet another re-change.
But, as it is, there is seemingly no way to "Fix" this thread as it is, so, in order to salvage as much as possible, i'll treat it as a workbench instead.

Comments, ideas & such from others are also welcome.

Essentially, i have this Game System called Star Streed.
The Rules are virtually finished, except for a valid Points System, so it is best to use them together with a GM, currently.

My greatest problem has obviously been to write all of it down in a well understood, and good-looking way.

Below, and further on, you can currently see attempts at this, including a try to focus on one Main game idea, called "Orrica".
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Orrica

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

This is a Miniature Game of ... kind of ... my own making, more or less, and are designed for those who really liked the (old) games Space Hulk and Advanced Space Crusade.
They were my original inspiration for this Game, after all!

As such, it is, of course, designed for the use of mainly 40K Miniatures, and even some from Fantasy(Warhammer), and even though several things may be quite alike 40K, a lot is also Different.
...................................................................................
The Story:

A Space Route has been terrorized by Space Pirates lately.
They have not just taken goods, but also kidnapped travellers, crew, and sometimes even taken whole Ships!

The protectors of the Area is a Contigent of Astra Force, and they have traced the Pirates to a seemingly barren planet, called "Orrica".

The planet has a few Human Colonies, and a newly upstarted Terraforming Structure.

After some searching, the sent out Research Patrol found an odd opening in the ground, which led into what seemed as a vast complex of corridors and rooms below the barren surface..........

A shuttle with 10 mixed Troopers were sent down, but it was shot down, midair, and Crashed on the sandy & stony surface of Orrica.

As the Research Patrol were attacked by four-armed opponents with Claws, so were the shot down Shuttle. In the corridors, an Inquirer Trainee in the Troop recognised their opponents by their colour patterns, and inside the Shuttle, a Senetian felt the smell through the just opened door:
Rioshan Shlaas!
...................................................................................
EDIT:
This Topic is currently undergoing a major reworking, and some may still be unchanged, especially the replies that i got early: some may still refer to what was said in earlier posts.
(I considered them correct, and that is part of the reason i now rework this Topic.)

Ok, time to get going!

Orrica:

Underground

[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]

You'll need a few 12-sided Dice(D12), and a few 6-sided Dice(D6).
You also need the Stats and the Rules noted here, and, of course, Miniatures that is proper for the noted Stats.

Floorplans would also be a nice addition, be they from Space Hulk, Space Crusade, Doom, Descent, Star Wars, or any 25mm squared ones.

Basic Stats & Rules:
I'll start by explaining the Stats and the Basic Rules concerning them, one by one:

Actions
This is the amount of Actions the Miniature can make Each Turn, like Shoot, then Move, or Punch, and then Shoot.
Move
Each time the Miniature takes an Action to Move, it may move this amount of Inches, or 25 mm squares/hexagons.
Body
This is used instead of the Armor Stat, when the mini has no Armor, or the available Armor is Ignored.
Armor
This is the most common Defense Value, if any Attack Roll against it Exceeds it, this Miniature has usually taken 1 Wound, or more.
Will
Another kind of Defense, this is against any Mental Attacks that may be used, as well as to resist effects of Fear and Terror.
Health
This is the amount of Wounds that the Miniature can take before becoming Knocked Out. This is Not the same as Dead, really, but for Gaming purposes it may occasionally be the same, except that Heal Still Works, if anyone possess this.

How Attacks Works.
The Attacks available may clearly differ from Miniature to Miniature, but i'll give a few examples here:

A Basic Astra Force Soldier often has a Bolter, with Range: 24, and Damage: D12+1.
He also has a Punch of Range: Near, and Damage: D12-1.
(The Bolter cannot be used at opponents that is Near, or within "1.)

That means, that if he were to Shoot his Bolter at someone that has Armor: 11, he needs to take 1 Action for this, and then Roll a D12.
On this, he need to get a 12, but since he has a +1 to this D12, an 11 will be enough.
So, if it ends up 11 or 12, the Attack will cause a Wound on the Target.

However, with the Punch, he can't even hope to hurt someone with this same Armor (11), since the most he can get on the D12 is 12, but then the -1 is noted, resulting in 11.
And, the Damage Rolled must be MORE than the Armor of the Target, or there will be no Wounds dealt.

However, he might still be able to Wound someone with Armor 8, for instance, by rolling 10 or more for the Punch.

* Fumbles and Misses *
If you Roll Damage, and get a "2" on the Die, you have MISSED!
Even if it would have a +5 to the Roll, the Rolled 2 is still a Miss.

If you get a "1", though, You have not just Missed, you have also FUMBLED, and lose you next Action!!!!
(I recommend to not let Fumble effects carry over to the minis/Player's next Turn, though.)

Sorry, but you are being somewhat vague here. I see the use of action points, but the rest is rather convoluted and vague.

As for the description of the second game, the "What the game Inquisitor should have been" remark stings. What should it have been like then? Inquisitor was what it said on the tin: a narrative roleplaying game that uses miniatures. Yes it did not life up to its full potential, but these examples are just random sci-fi settings using different names for established factions. If this isn't supposed to be 40k, don't ape it, but go all the way into a new direction.

edit.

NO insult meant in any way, mind you.

Hi.
Ok, i know, i had to end in the middle of the explaining of the Rules, and that may have contributed to the vaugeness.

As for the second Game, maybe i should say "What i thought, hoped, and (wrongly) assumed what Inquisitor would be" instead .......
(I thought they would do it for 25-28 mm size, so the minis would work well together with 40K minis.... really not more special than that.)

After i've added some more info it'll be clear that i have only "aped" parts that is convenient, like calling "Bolters" Bolters, and similar things.
(Also, if GW hadn't discontinued ASC & Space Hulk .... I would not just have aped them less, i would have modded them, instead of making my own: This!)

I mean, as you may have noticed, i have hinted at an actual language for the Riosha(unlike 40K's Tyranids that are fully telepathic, and don't need speech), and you may also later notice that Astra Force include "Alliens" and "Mutants", something that is IMPOSSIBLE in 40K as it currently is(Rouge Trader might've allowed it, once).

I don't know if you are satisfied with this information, but if you are not, then please tell me, i have all the Rules in my head, more or less, and have had problems writing them down in a fully understandable manner.
One can say i'm still trying to find the best way to describe them.

The Stats, though, i have printed down on sheets of paper(and in a USB), so once the Rules are explained, the rest will be easy ..... i think.

I thank for the Edit comment, it eased it up.
Really, i appreciate your comments, i may need some help.....

GW has not discontinued Space Hulk though. Limited release or not, it has not been discontinued. Chances are that GW will "stumble" upon a batch every now and then. Plus give or take a year or so and Ebay will sell the game cheap enough.

Anyway, please for the sake of others: Don't stop halfway through an explanation. If you can't finish something, copy-paste it into a text file and finish it later. This isn't MSN, AIM or whatever you kids use these days.

Rulewise, do they actually work in a sensible way? Are they without major flaw or fault? Can't they be easily exploited?
PostPosted: Thu Dec 31, 2009 2:11 pm

Well, Space Hulks "Be or not Be" is unsure at best, as it is, at least that is the impression that i have gotten, and the time i started my work on my own Game, was after the 90's release (of SH), when it was Officially discontinued.

As you may guess, i'm no kid ....... (Heard that Guess before....)
I'm from Sweden, and my English may not be entirely correct at times, but i actually BOUGHT the original Space Hulk at a Game Retailer 1991.

I'll try to avoid further "chop-ups", i think i had started in a way that i felt didn't work, but i admit, i could have saved it for later instead of posting halfways.
I also seem to take a long time to type.

The Rules have been tested, so they work, but they haven't been as much tested and played through as i would have preferred.

So, they work in a sensible way, but they may still have a major flaw no-one's noticed yet.

Easily exploited? If anyone else takes the brunt of the Rules, and turn them into a bestseller, or even a "quite ok" Game, i don't mind, really.

I have been making this Game because it didn't exist, currently.
If i make it, or someone else, doesn't matter very much to me .....

EDIT:
Ouch! With "exploited" you meant Gameswise, not Economically....
Right?
(Typical me....)

Under Construction
EDIT:
This post is currently potential nonsense, it is a part of my reworking of this Topic. Sorry for that.

A Basic Astra Force Soldier has these Stats:
Actions: 2 (()) Move: 4 (()) Body: 4 (()) Armor: 11 (()) Will: 3 (()) Health: 1

The Soldier also has a Bolter, with Range: 24, and Damage: D12+1.
He also has a Punch of D12-1.
(The Bolter cannot be used at opponents that is Near, or within "1.)

A Basic Riosha Shlaa(Genestealer Mini) has these Stats:
Actions: 3 (()) Move: 4 (()) Body: 4 (()) Armor: 8 (()) Will: 3 (()) Health: 1

The Riosha Warrior("Shlaa" means "Warrior" in their language) has Slash Claws, Range: Near, and Damage: 3 x D12.
And they also has Stealth, Grab, and Climb.

Wouldn't a D20 system be better then?
PostPosted: Wed Jan 06, 2010 4:48 am

Since i Have asked for help, and since i Have been stuck for quite some time now, and since i have the impression that You are one of the brighter ones around here, i will not say "no" directly, but is really curious instead, and instead i ask:

Why would a D20 System be better?
Please, elaborate.

I associate The D20 System with Roll to hit, then Roll for Damage, and that goes against the idea of "One Attack, One Roll" that i like(d) in Space Hulk and Advanced Space Crusade.

It's an easy to use and readily available system. Personally I'd go with either the regular D6 system or the system used in the 40k roleplaying games relying on D10
PostPosted: Wed Jan 06, 2010 6:27 am

But it is still "To Hit, then To Wound".
And the reason i started doing this Game originally, was partially because none of the other available games then, and as it seems, STILL didn't have the fast mechanism of "One Attack, One Roll" that i was striving for.

The only exeption is the limited re-release of Space Hulk, .... and i think that the Great Rail Wars come close as well, when i think of it .....

If you are going for a "one attack one roll" system then the actual success chances should be ramped up a bit, or you'll get silly scenarios of models that can't be killed unless very insane rolls are made.
PostPosted: Wed Jan 06, 2010 7:23 am

I have noticed that, but thanks for pointing it out in case i hadn't.

I have mainly Three possible "Die Systems", :
Full Streed:
This uses the full regular Dice from D4 to D12.
Semi-Streed:
The one Originally intended for Orrica, uses D6'es & D12's only.
Ease Streed:
The most SH & ASC-like, it uses ONLY D6'es, and builds on a "halving" of Semi-Streed.

Right now, i am Considering Ease Streed for Orrica, but i wonder, shall Trooper Bolter Damage be D6, or D6+1?
And, should Power Armor be 5 or 6?
(Tacnauts(Terminators) is to be 1 higher than PA....)

If i only were thinking of Orrica, it would be an easy choise on making Bolter simply D6, but i also plan on possibly using the System for Delshea, later, and there it may be as common with Pistols & Karbines ......

I think i have the answer, but i think it would be good to get my .... thoughts confirmed.

I'd focus on one system first and work your way out from there. Conceive simple concept and fine tune those first.
