I know many sopranos can't sight read, since we have the easiest part (well Soprano II can be hard. I stand right by them on the risers and it feels really weird because I can hear them better than the other Sop I's.
I myself can sight read, since I'm also in band and took piano lessons for a few years.
Any thoughts?

I'm a soprano and I can sightsing for the most part, all thanks to violin, piano and about a thousand tries at different instruments. It takes me a bit, but all in all I can do it. 3nodding

I can sight read, to some degree, I'm just terrible at sight reading a cappella. Otherwise, if I have music, I can do it. And I'm a soprano, by the way. :3 I love singing high notes.

I can sight read fairly well, though not great. Odd thing is, I can sight sing pretty well, but I can't read music. Funny how that works. Never played an instrument, so I never learned things like key signatures, and the actual names of the notes, but if you give me music I can usually sing it.
I'm an alto, but the non-reading isn't purely a soprano problem. There are plenty of people in all of the sections of my choir (except Tenor, thankfully, since there're only 4 of them!) who can't sight read at all.
I used to be aweful at sight reading, but my high school director made us work on it daily because we were going to state, and we ended up taking 4th in sight singing my senior year, so I guess it was worth it!

Hmmm....a little. Sight-singing was a requirement in one of my classes.
My relative pitch is decent so if there is no modulation, I could definately sight read on the fly. But throw in odd accidentals and I loose it unless it's a lower or upper neighbor.

The school system I came from started teaching solfege from kindergarten. The "how to read music" bit was spread out from first to fifth grade.
By the time one reaches high school, that basic knowlege is kind of assumed, and, depending on your choir, they plunge you RIGHT into intensive sight-singing practices.
I'm still in the "somewhat" category, though. I can't seem to get past being afraid of messing up.
