Twilightgaze had taken, to her surprise and disbelief, a space with the queens to take care of four half-RiverClan orphans: Moonkit, Hailkit, Stormkit, and Antkit. Sure, she'd felt sorry for the poor orphans, but she had been shocked and mildly horrified (not to mention rather gratified deep down) to find that all four now considered her their mother. They were out of the den and up for playing around camp now, though she still kept a close eye on them. She couldn't bear it if one of them died like Sunsetkit.
She stretched a bit and then settled into a seated position to watch them, shivering a bit from the cold. Oddly, she didn't entirely miss going out on patrol in this weather when the kits needed her, but she also sort of missed the old, quiet routine of being an unnoticed but devoted Warrior. Ah, well, at least she was teaching four lovely kittens who called her "mother" about the Warrior Code. Moonkit sat by her "mother" happily washing herself. She'd been told by Twilightgaze, who at times lacked in tact, that she and her three brothers were orphans, and that just their mother was a RiverClanner. This didn't particularly bother her, as she felt Twilightgaze was her true mother, and Twilightgaze's mate Blackshiver was the truest father a kit could have, though both parents seemed at times troubled. Who cared? She had a wonderful family, her "parents" seemed to be slowly getting happier, and that made Moonkit a very happy kitten.

It wasn't all that surprising. Hailkit had kinda always known anyways but a part of him didn't want to believe it. After all, neither he nor his siblings looked like Twilightgaze, and definitely not like Blackshiver.
Hailkit sat across from the she-cat and his sister, who was grooming herself. Twilightgaze was keeping an eye on them, which didn't bother him a bit. He loved the blue-gray cat even if she wasn't their real mother. He was quite content with things as they were.

Stormkit couldn't help but knead the ground anxiously. He was happy to be out of the Nursery, but he wanted to play. And all his siblings seemed to want to do right now was sit around and stare. It was like all they could think about was the "news" their mother had told them. But it wasn't news to him. He'd known as soon as he was old enough to see. It hadn't changed things. Twilightgaze was his mother... She was the only mother he'd ever known.

"Hey, Stormkit," Hailkit faked a pretty good smile. He was never very good at expressing emotions. He got up and walked towards his older brother. He couldn't see where Antkit was. He wondered about that brother sometimes, but then again he wasn't one to judge. Antkit was probably sleeping or just out of sight.
He reached the spot where Stormkit was and turned his icy blue eyes on him, "Wanna do something?" He enjoyed just being with his siblings, but still wished there were other older kits. Halcyontail's litter was recently apprenticed and were usually to busy, and Skykit was too small to play.

Air. Open air. Sweet air. Marsh. Reeds. Water. Twinkle water. Water twinkles, water runs, water shines bright. Everything fuzzy, but water bright, like sun. Water was sun? Water cold. Sun is warm. Water is not sun. Antkit squinted at the clearing, trying to bring the world into focus. He had been trying ever since he opened his mismatched eyes to bring the world into focus; but his desperation was abated now that he realized that he could never bring the world into focus. He was extremely near-sighted, and that was all there was to be done about that.
Food. Food good. Food sweet, taste like Mother. Mother blue. Mother blue like sky. End of day. End-of-day-sky. Mother like end-of-day-sky--called Twilight. Mother have purple eyes like bottom of sky at end of day. Mother pretty. Mother blue--Ant blue, Storm blue! Hail white, Moon white. Like snow. Snow cold. Snow cold, Ant dislikes cold and snow! With a whimper, Antkit crept over to Twilightgaze, casting about him with his paws like the ant he had been named for. It was so hard to see that he had to rely on his extremely keen sense of smell and his sense of touch. He could tell the difference between several different cats by the feel of their fur alone. For example, Twilightgaze had soft fur underneath the oily outercoat. Blackshiver, however, had a more coarse fur. Father food. Father bring food. Hard food. We eat food now that tastes like river. River water. Ant dislikes water. Even if he had wanted to, Blackshiver could not have disliked Darkflower's litter. As it was, he loved them as dearly as his own kits--in fact, there were times he forgot they weren't his. Watching them scamper warmed up his heart. It was good to be a father. He felt the hole eaten away by Pinepaw's death filled up. It almost didn't hurt to think of her now. If we had had kits, this is what they would be like. And there's no one I'd rather share this experience with than Twilightgaze. That was confusing--trying to reconcile his love for both Pinepaw and Twilightgaze. But in the end, he loved them both. Though he would never admit it to his StarClan-hating mate, Blackshiver saw Darkflower's litter as a sign.
Take care of these kits as if they were yours, Blackshiver, his first lover seemed to be saying. Twilightgaze is the perfect mother, and the perfect mate for you. Love each other with my blessing.

Before he could hear what Stormkit wanted to do, Hailkit noticed his younger brother as he crept towards Twilightgaze. He had a weird way of walking, but Hailkit kind of liked that his brother had his own ways of doing things. It made him unique. He didn't feel very special at times himself. It seemed like he was just like every other cat in RiverClan. But it won't be like that forever. I'll do something to get noticed.... eventually.
He also noticed Blackshiver watching them. It was a little unnerving. I liked the tom, and he treated them as if they were his own kits, but he still felt a little weird around him. Maybe he would have been more used to it if he had a real father. He tried to push these thoughts out of his head. Blackshiver and Twilightgaze did their best, and he was glad that he did have a family in RiverClan. After all, it would have been just as easy for the Clan to feed them and watch them without the real care that he got from Twilightgaze.
His ears pricked at the sound of crackling snow outside the camp, but then he turned them back and focused his attention on Stormkit.

Twilightgaze, with a mix of love and some slight embarrassment, padded over to sit in front of Antkit and wrap her tail around him. She still felt uncertain how to feel about these four orphans calling her their mother. There was some growing motherly pride and affection for each one: serene Moonkit, bumbling Antkit, true Hailkit, and playful Stormkit; on the other hand, she knew and they knew she wasn't their real mother, but, well...even after finding out the truth, they still considered her and Blackshiver their parents. She surrendered to the smile playing about her lips and her violet eyes softened with affection.
Glancing up, she glimpsed Blackshiver, and there was an imperceptible further softening of her eyes. She had come to love him quietly, though she kept her feelings to herself, out of respect for his Pinepaw's memory. If something changed for him, she'd welcome a relationship with him with all her heart, but if he wasn't ready for it, she would keep silent. In the meantime, she was startled and pleased by how good a father he was. True, Hailkit didn't seem to get along with him, but other than that, their little family of six was content enough, and this was more happiness than Twilightgaze had ever known.
Moonkit finished washing herself and got up, stretching, to join Hailkit and Stormkit. "I'm up for a game when you two are," she said cheerfully.
