Who: Rivener and Lucia Where: Yuurei’s house When: Midafternoon Weather: Snowing light soft snowflakes that melt as soon as they touch anything When Lucia got Rivener’s call that he was coming over to talk to her, the kitten had to suppress her cry of happiness. Luckily Yuurei was out somewhere, and wouldn’t be back until later that night. Rivener was coming over and she didn’t know how long she had to get ready, but it would be fine. The kitten had to look hot and sexy and perfect for her first time alone with him since he had rescued her. Her arm was finally out of the splint and finally feeling normal again.
Looking in the mirror in her bedroom as she got ready, Lucia kept glancing out of her balcony window every few seconds to see if the red and black sigel was on his way yet. It was definitely making her outfit selection and makeup application slower, but the kitten felt her heart flutter every time she thought about his arrival.
However, the frei looked hot enough to melt Rivener’s heart even if it was cold. She was wearing the layered necklace that she shared with Vyn. She also had on a tight black leather jacket that was halfway closed causing more cleavage than she typically had. Her hair, though normally in pigtails, was down in full waves around her face and shoulders. Her makeup was perfect with smoky eye shadow and dark eyeliner. Her lips looked more full with the plum lip liner and colored lip shine. Lucia smiled sultrily at the mirror and half-lidded her eyes. Perfect.
Purple eyes looked around. Her bedroom was all set – everything looked neat and in place. The black satin sheets and comforter on the bed were perfectly made. All of her books were back in their place; her laptop was closed on her desk with the little plush black kitten Xiu gave her for Christmas on top. Grabbing the gift bag off of her dresser that held a little late Christmas gift for the Scorpion, the kitten floated downstairs. She lit as many candles as she could find to make the house smell good. Cinnamon apple seemed to be the smell that Yuurei had set out. Flicking on the low set lights, the house looks as inviting and warm as anything. The frei even turned the fireplace on and threw a match on it to get a fire started.
Lucia smiled and rubbed her lips together to make sure they still shone. It was perfect.

Rivener was not the type of person who ran away from things, but he'd had to stop himself from doing just that every ten minutes since he'd called Lucia. He could not stop his mind from flailing around like a fish out of water, panicking and thinking up all kinds of scenarios... She was going to be furious with him. Or what if he showed up and she tried to kiss him? Or oh god, what if Rivener lost his self-control and kissed HER?
Nothing good could come of this, that's what his brain was constantly screeching when the urge to flee would pop up.
The only reason Rivener kept moving forward, flying quickly towards the kitten's house, was because things couldn't remain as they were. Riv had been under the effect of the infection when he'd taken her to his rooms after her return from the graveyard, he wasn't thinking straight! Lucia might think more of it, though, and the Sigel didn't want to be accused of stringing anyone along. He had to make it clear that he'd made a mistake, and that nothing was going to happen between him and Lucia.
Riv had the most vivid mental image of the kitten lunging for his eyes, claws out.
Shuddering, the Sigel spotted Lucia's house. Just as she'd described it. He groaned nervously and landed, making his way to the door with a flutter of anxiety in his stomach. He caught himself smoothing down his leather jacket (worn against the chill of winter) and combing fingers through his wind-swept hair, swearing as he forced his fingers to stop. Remember ZUL, he coached himself, steeling his heart and mind against the sultry pussycat he was about to visit.
Groaning again, Riv lifted his hand and knocked on the door.

As the familiar visage came into view, Lucia glanced in the mirror. Perfect. He hadn’t seen her with her hair down before. It fell softly on her shoulders in waves. Lucia was expecting a romantic night just the two of them. The stage was set perfectly. The fire, burning candles, she even pulled out a glass of wine if he wanted any. She looked like a sex kitten. Excitement shown in her purple eyes and she held the gift bag in one hand. He’s here!
As the first knock the kitten opened the door wide, framing herself in the soft light emanating from the interior. Lucia’s bright purple eyes shone with excitement as she reached out, took the scorpions cold hands into her own warm ones and pulled him inside. ”Hi” she said with a smile releasing his hands and lightly brushing her warm lips over his cool cheek. Closing the door, the foyer immediately warmed up, hopefully warming the chilled Scorpion. She cocked her head to the side slightly, her hair framing her face, ”Come on in. Want to warm up by the fire?” Purple eyes looked adoringly at Rivener.
”Oh!” she said noticing the bag in her hand. ”Merry Christmas – sorry it’s late.” She handed the red gift bag to the Sigel. It was a silly gift really. She didn’t know why she did it. But the frei hoped he would like it.

The door opened so quickly after his knock Rivener stood shocked for a moment. He'd expected he'd have to wait while someone made their way over, but had Lucia been waiting by the door or something?
And after this inane thought Rivener's mind made a complete flatline. Ruby eyes widened as they took in the sight of the little sex kitten that grabbed his hands and pulled him into warmth and light and oh god her hair was down and looked so soft, and she had a leather jacket like Rivener (Riv always did like leather) that strained to hold closed just under her ample bosom... Which was threatening to pop right out of the flimsy coat if Lucia wasn't careful. The firelight played on the rounded, delicious, god-damned inviting skin so prettily, and the Sigel caught himself staring dumbly. He snapped his eyes up when those flickeringly-lit mounds began moving closer. What was-
Warm, plump lips on his cheek, and then a garbled offer to warm up by the fire. It was only garbled because Rivener's brain wasn't quite fully working yet, his mouth falling slack at that innocent little cheek-kiss. Lucia said more garbled words about Christmas and lateness, extending something... A bag? Without really thinking, Rivener took it. "Ah..." he replied intelligently, unable to move any closer to the warmth.
It was plenty warm right here anyway, wasn't it?
The red eyes roved: the soft hair, the inviting lips, the freakingly tempting bosom... WHY were those things so irresistible to look at?! "Uh..." Oh god, he wanted to push her against a wall and kiss her until she forgot how to talk too, then he wouldn't be the only one acting like a complete idiot! So why didn't he? Wasn't there some kind of... reason...? Rivener scoured his brain, standing still but wings rustling with the effort of restraining himself. His eyes shone with a fierce fire, betraying how tempted he was.

Lucia looked back at the Scorpion. She knew he could speak fine, but he always seemed to go speechless around her. She supposed that was a good thing, right? When he just stared at her and didn’t seem to do anything, even after she offered to bring him by the fire, Lucia smiled sweetly. As the gift bag hung in his hand, and he just kept looking at her, Lucia blushed slightly, a soft crimson flooded her cheeks, enhancing the blush she had applied before he had come over.
The frei ran her fingers up the arm of his jacket – it was still cold. Lucia slid her hands around his waist and pulled him, as she floated backwards, towards the living room. The temperature increased even more the further they got from the entrance. Settling in front of the fireplace the Kitten smiled. She released Rivener’s body and asked sweetly, ”Can I take your coat?” With the Scorpion closer to the fireplace, the orangey glow was lighting up her face and body. Her purple eyes almost seemed to have flecks of orange in them. Not really waiting for him to respond, Lucia again reached to him. She took the gift bag back, placing it on the coffee table right next to her, and undid his jacket. As it fell open the frei slipped her hands inside and rubbed her warm fingers over his chest and up over his shoulders, her wrists pushing the jacket off of his shoulders and down his arms as her fingers felt his skin. Before it touched the ground, she reached one hand down and deftly grabbed the neck of the jacket, laying it on the couch behind her.
The Kitten didn’t know if Rivener was warm yet, but she knew her temperature had risen and not only from the fire. She reached over to the table and handed the gift bag back to him. ”Open it!” Again, it was a silly gift, but she may as well see if he liked it now.

How cute she was, blushing like that. Rivener noticed it, he did, the way her cheeks were reddening as he looked at her. He noticed it for a little while, at least, until she began running fingers over his waist, pulling him inside the house, closer to warmth that was making her ******** glow like some crazy, tempting angel. Some kind of garbled sound came out of the kitten's mouth, Rivener not really bothering to decipher it just yet. Didn't seem he needed to, whatever it was: Lucia was moving now, and Riv hadn't needed to say anything.
She took her gift away to put it aside, and then- Holy hell!- the sexy little thing began undressing Rivener. The Sigel's breathing accelerated and he just stood there basking in every touch, ruby eyes finally melting from complete idiotic shock to sultry, utterly charmed awe. She was touching his skin all over as she pushed his coat off, and Rivener just let the damned thing fall from his arms. He didn't notice Lucia catching it and putting it on the sofa.
What the hell was Rivener here for again? He had a hard time remembering. It must have something to do with unzipping that obscenely-tempting leather jacket that Lucia wore. It must have something to do with Rivener running his hands through that black mane of hair (it was down, how sexy!). It must have something to do with Rivener pushing Lucia down to the floor in front of the fire and just kissing-
Something was being offered to him, and he blinked down at the gift again. "Ah. ...right." He took it, letting his fingers brush the girl's for a moment as the package exchanged hands. Ruby eyes smoldered quietly as they flicked up with a smirk. Rivener opened the gift and looked inside, pulling out a picture frame-...
With a picture of Lucia posing in a very... well, it WOULD be more suggestive if her lower body was involved, but the ribbon did a good enough job of suggesting where the long legs and curvaceous backside would be. Riv's smirk grew to a grin and he chuckled. "Nice," he noted, putting it back in the bag and placing it aside.
"I could get you something too, I've been a little, ah... a little broke lately. I'll get you something when I get money. But for now maybe I-"
He gasped, eyes popping wide. Suddenly it all came back to him. He had no money because he'd been fired during the infection. During the infection he'd nearly bedded Lucia, and he'd come to apologize! He was with ZUL, he wasn't supposed to be leading the kitten (or anyone else!) on anymore!
Suddenly on the defensive, Rivener lifted his hands and backed up a few feet, shaking his head. "Ah, w-wait, wait! Wait, I, Uh... Oh god. H-how do I-... Uhm, d-do you remember lots of things from the infection, L-Lucia?" He winced, hoping she'd forgotten. By the way she'd been acting, he got the impression she remembered all too clearly...

Lucia’s eyes danced as he took the package. Would he think it was stupid? Would he look at her like she was crazy? He laughed. He called it nice – not the most flattering word. If she really cared about it, Lucia would have been hurt. I mean, it wasn’t much, it was silly, but it was from her, of her. She watched him intently as he placed it down.
The frei shook her head and was about to dismiss Rivener’s apology of not having anything for her – though her face did fall slightly – when the Scorpion suddenly gasped loudly and his demeanor changed entirely. About to ask him what the matter was, he suddenly stiffened, put his hands up, like she was going to attack him or something, and moved away from her.
”Yeah. I remember everything,” she replied softly with a slightly smile lighting up her face further. The graveyard the kissing, the flying, the balcony, his room: it all came back in her memory as she thought about it more. The flush from earlier returned, not only in her cheeks, but also spread down her neck and to her chest.
If she continued to think about kissing the Scorpion, she might attack his lips again and she wanted to be with him more than just for kissing. ”Do you want a glass of wine or anything?” she asked with a playful smile. ”If you would want, I was thinking I could put on a movie and we can sit and watch it. Just you and me.” Her purple eyes examined Rivener sidelong.

"Uh." It was all Rivener could think to say. She remembered. She was smiling at him, flirting with him, inviting him to have wine and watch a movie just the two of them, and this was all going so wrong so fast. The Scorpion should have just said what he came to say right from the start, instead of-... of-... Ugh, he was disgusted with himself. Why did he continually let himself get carried away by whatever pretty thing was in front of his face?!
Sighing, Riv looked around and spotted his jacket, picking it up and hunching his shoulders defensively. "Um listen. I came here-... it's about that. About what happened during the infection. I, ah... I wasn't myself. Obviously, none of us were quite normal during that time of course, but I mean, I shouldn't have done all that. I really hadn't meant to string you along again, and I didn't mean to give you the wrong impression again... I'm so sorry, Lucia. I just came to tell you that. Th-that we're not-... This isn't... Ugh." He glanced aside, wondering how he could possibly say it and spare her feelings.
Probably a little too late for that, he figured. "I made a mistake. I shouldn't have done any of that, and I'm so terribly sorry. There's someone else I like, still. .....I'm sorry." He doubted he could say it enough.

Lucia closed her eyes for a moment. Picking up a wine glass she poured the deep red wine into it. She marveled at the way it filled the glass, splashing up the side of it before covering up the splatter with more liquid, washing away the mistake. She turned slowly, watching the fire’s reflection on the glass. It was so pretty. ”It’s okay – I mean, I figure that the infection kinda only brought out the natural urges. So whatever we did when infected, for the most part, is maybe who we truly are. What we truly are.” She held up the glass, offering it to the Scorpion. Why else would he have saved her? Why else would he have kissed her? I mean – she made sure he kissed back this time. That he wanted it too. She had. So had he. It only made sense.
Her eyes flicked back up to Rivener and noticed his jacket in his hand. ”If you don’t want to stay in, we could go out. Yuurei told me about some cool clubs we could get into.” She reached a hand up to her face, brushing a lock of hair out of the way. She hoped that if she didn’t acknowledge hearing Rivener’s last part that he wouldn’t say it again. That it just wouldn’t come up and he could go back to being mesmerized. Hopefully whatever mistake she made earlier wouldn’t ruin the night.

Rivener watched Lucia, half expecting her to lunge at him and claw his eyes out. He was tense, he was ready for it, but the girl just acted calm and composed, actually pouring herself a glass of wine and looking at it like it was the most interesting thing in the world. Her words were so easy and effortless, speaking of the infection like it had been meant as some sort of Raevan Epiphany... Rivener bristled, afraid of the truth in that statement. Whatever the infection had done, it hadn't changed any of them, no... Only brought out things that should not have been brought out. Only Lucia didn't seem to think so, clearly.
Riv wore a frown by the time those lovely purple eyes alit on him again. The Scorpion had no idea what to do, so he simply opened his mouth and let it go wherever it wanted, hoping he wouldn't say something completely stupid.
"Maybe it's really like you said, and the infection brought out natural urges or whatever. But there's a REASON most of us aren't like our infected selves all the time! There's a REASON!" Rivener shook, clutching his jacket. He was no murderer, damnit! "Whatever I did back then was NOT me! It was the part without control that did it! So I'm really sorry he-... I kissed you, Lucia, but I only want to love one person at a time now. And I'm afraid that's not you. I love someone else."
He backed away. Surely now she'd kick him out. Surely now she'd jump at his face.

The frei felt her anger flare as her eyes stared at him and her face didn't show any recognition. However, her mind was going a mile a minute. Want he said. Want! What the hell did LOVE have to do with want? She didn't want to like someone who obviously didn't like her back. She didn't want to kiss someone who didn't want to kiss her. So why did he want to kiss her when he obviously didn't care? The choices Lucia and Rivener and every other frei made while infected may not have been the most logical, may not have been what they would have done when holding themselves in check, but whatever they did, they made those choices. They wanted to do it. She had wanted to kiss Rivener. She had wanted to attack Prajna. She had wanted to have a splint instead of a cast - and it really didn't matter how she got her way. And he wanted to come over here. He wanted to stare at her. And now he wanted to chose to not love her.
All of this took less than a second to think. And she didn't know what to do. Should she throw herself at him like she wanted to do? And make him forget this other girl with the love she could give him? Should she attack him like she had done to Prajna, flailing her body at him until he was broken and bleeding...and lose him forever as a result. She wanted to love him and have him love her. She didn't want to hurt him - so how could he want to hurt her...
She didn't want to look weak, but she felt her eyes beginning to moisten. She was holding her breath, keeping her eyes open, willing the water that threatened to flow down her cheeks to remain hidden from those who didn't care. Hidden from those who wanted to hurt her. Again. She felt the wine glass slip from between her fingers and fall to the wood floor. There was the crash as the delicate stemware shattered and the blood-red wine spilled out, staining her ribbon with dark circles like unkempt tear drops. But she didn't care and she hardly noticed.
The kitten turned away from Rivener as her body forced her to draw in air. To blink her eyes. To have a tear slide down her cheek. He flew her away into the sky. And now... Lucia felt goosebumps rise up on her arms and back, despite the warmth of the fire, the heat she had felt before, and the warm tear that was chilling her cheek as it dried.
She floated away, towards the entryway and stared in the mirror. She quickly wiped away any smeared makeup and tried to steel herself. She didn't know what she'd do if he came this way to leave. She didn't think she could prepare herself until it happened, but she just waited there, staring at the bottom of the mirror, her eyes unfocused and not seeing anything. If he was a coward, he'd sneak out another door. At least if he did that she would know he didn't deserve her love.

Had Rivener even for a moment realized that "another door" was an option, he might have seriously considered taking the coward's way out. As it was, however, the Scorpion swore internally as the very clearly upset kitten went to stand guard by the front door, the only way out as far as Riv was concerned.
She hadn't said a single thing. Not a word. In all honesty, that was probably worse than having her launch herself at him claws-first. Rivener felt the guilt lash at him more effectively than any physical slashing: Rivener knew for a fact that he was lower than dirt. All because his damned infected body didn't know how to hold itself back from seeking out every immediate gratification it could get its hands on...
The Sigel sighed deeply and slipped on his jacket. He'd said he was sorry, and he supposed he couldn't just float here in the living room forever. Best he get out of here and leave Lucia her privacy. Clearing his throat, uncomfortable, Rivener headed towards the front door while trying to give the kitten as much space as possible. He fairly flattened himself to the wall when he neared her, wary of being too close. "Well, then. ...I should go. I'm really sorry again, Lucia. I'm-... I'm sorry." He would have liked to say something to make it all better, but there were no magical words that would accomplish that. He just needed to get out of here, and give her the courtesy of not trying to "stay friends". Gently he tried to skirt around the frei, one hand reaching for the door.

Lucia wrapped her arms around herself protectively, the smooth leather felt cool to touch. Her anger had quickly melted into the upset feeling she remembered from the pool party. Only fresher and more painful. She had won him back. And it was so much more recent. Their passionate night was so fresh that if she really tried, she could remember the warmth of his touch, the tenderness of his voice, the strength of his lips on hers.
She felt silly, but she still wished she could turn the night around, regain some sort of control. Why did nothing with Rivener seem to go like she wanted? The kitten noticed the snow starting to settle on the porch as the temperature outside was cooling with the mood inside. The storm looked like it might get pretty nasty. The flakes were large and wet.
As Rivener floated towards her, the frei had to resist the urge to run away, to open the door and bolt out into the night. Of course it was her house, so that didn't really make much sense. He should be the one running away. As she glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, she noted that that seemed to be what he was doing. His coat was back on.
As he tried to flatten himself, probably wishing he had Eiry's ability to just escape through the wall, Lucia tried to make her body take up more space to compensate for her dejected internal self.
What did this other girl have that she didn't? What did she do for Rivener that Lucia wouldn't? As he stammered another apology, Lucia knew she shouldn't ask. It wouldn't be right. It wouldn't be an answer she wanted to hear. She wouldn't like it, since he obviously wanted to be with her rather than the Kitten. Her eyes round, she looked straight at the Scorpion before his hand could grasp and turn the doorknob.
Her seductive exterior no longer matched the mood - hers or his. Her voice seemed so weak, so foreign almost as she floated there, wanting to ask what she knew she shouldn't.
"Doe - does she make you feel like I do? Does sh-" the frei took a breath. This was obviously not easy for her, but the Kitten wasn't about to stop. She might not have been strong enough to resist the urge to ask. She might not have been strong enough to make Rivener forget about this other girl. But she would finish asking. She wouldn't let herself just trail off and be forgotten.
Her purple eyes looked intently into his red ones, trying to hold his gaze. "Does she care about you like I do? Like I could? Does she capture your attention so nothing else matters but her and you - like it was when you came in?" She floated forward towards him while speaking, not letting him interrupt her nor giving him a chance to open the door and run away like he had done so many times with her when he was feeling unsure. "Does she make you feel like you're on fire and melting at the same time? Like time is standing still even though it's flying by? Like - like" she paused and reached out a hand towards his but pulled back quickly as if burned by the heat radiating from his hand, but more with the knowledge of what his touch could do. "-like you make me feel?" She stared into his eyes, examining the expression on his face. He made her feel so special. She pursed her lips together. Her eyes were round and open, intent, desperate, and pleading, but also determined.

Oh s**t.
Oh s**t, oh s**t, oh s**t. Rivener was trapped. Flat against the wall, one hand almost able to touch the doorknob, Rivener was trapped! Lucia took up all the space with her presence alone, even if the small leather-clad girl wasn't all that large physically. And those eyes! The amethyst orbs were pinning Rivener in place, staring so intently the Sigel found himself darting glances aside, desperate for a way out.
Lucia began to speak, her voice drawing Rivener's eyes back and then keeping them there irrevocably. The Scorpion's breath got stuck in his lungs and his eyes widened slowly, sharp cold guilt stabbing through him with every question asked. It was like pure torture, being told how much he was wanted by the Kitten, watching her reach for his hand and flinch back...
Rivener groaned and tore his eyes away, glancing down at the floor. He owed her an answer, he couldn't just shoulder past her and run out (as tempting as that was). He'd have to tell her the truth, and hope that she'd understand.
"...Yeah, I feel all that with him. It's ah... it's not a girl, that I'm in love with." He blushed darkly, wondering how she'd take that news. "You're still my very favorite girl, Lucia, but I love him more. He makes my heart race just from seeing him, he makes my stomach flutter... And while those things still happen when I see you too, there's something that only happens when I see him: I smile while I'm stunned speechless. My whole body tingles and feels prickly... I just-... I love him, Lucia. I like you a lot too, I really do, but I love him more, that's all. I'm sorry." Riv bowed his head, hoping he'd won his freedom from this torture.

Lucia felt her heart sinking as her questions were answered. She knew she shouldn't have asked. She knew it wouldn't be an answer she wanted to hear. And he chose to torture her by answering. She knew--
Lucia bit her lower lip and looked away from the Sigel as she backed up slightly. Each sentence was a stab in the heart. She was a wounded animal and she felt trapped in her body. She didn't know what to do. She didn't know what to say. This time, however, she couldn't stop herself from blinking. She couldn't stop silent tears from running slowly down her cheeks. This wasn't how it was supposed to be. And the first thing he said...
A guy...a guy couldn't be a damsel in distress. A guy couldn't be his princess. A guy COULDN'T be the other woman. He couldn't do the same things for Rivener that she could. He couldn't be what the sigel wanted. But he was. The frei was still stuck within herself. She couldn't scream. She couldn't talk. She couldn't sob. She couldn't lash out. She couldn't stop the tears. She didn't know what to think. Rivener was one of those homo things. Kind of. She was his favorite girl...so what was this some sort of ******** competition?
Her anger and despair and everything welled up inside of her, threatening to spill out and make her do something reactive. Either throw herself at him and kill him like she had originally wanted, like she wanted to do at the pool party. Or throw herself at him and sob in his arms. Hope that he would understand her sadness and comfort her. That he would make everything better. But Lucia knew that wouldn't happen, as much as it did in the fairy tales. This was not a fairy tale. Life wasn't a fairy tale. Life was like Rivener: cruel, heartless, mean, manipulative, but irresistible to the Kitten. Maybe because he was the first Raevan she had felt a connection to. Maybe because he stole her first kiss. But there was no happy ending.
The kitten just backed away from the Scorpion. She hit the opposite wall and sunk down to the floor, her ribbon curled below her on the floor, her back against the wall. It was as if Rivener had pushed her into the wall in anger and watched as she slumped to the ground. Lucia felt drained. Rivener was free to leave. And Lucia didn't have the motivation to look at him. She didn't know if she could.
