JANUARY 14, 2253

DEAR APPLICANT,

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE THAT WE OFFER YOU ADMISSION TO STARFLEET ACADEMY, SAN FRANCISCO FOR THE FALL 2253 TERM. ON BEHALF OF THE ENTIRE STAFF HERE AT STARFLEET ACADEMY I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU TO THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR LIFE.

SINCE 2145 STARFLEET HAS BEEN A KEEPER OF INTERGALACTIC PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING AS WELL AS A MEANS OF GREAT STRIDES IN THE FIELDS OF SCIENCE AND SPACE EXPLORATION. WE ARE CONFIDENT, BASED ON YOUR PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS, THAT YOU WOULD MAKE A POSITIVE ADDITION TO STARFLEET AND EVERYTHING IT STANDS FOR. AND THAT STARFLEET AS A WHOLE WILL BE ENRICHED BY YOUR PRESENCE. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AS A STUDENT IN THE FALL.

SINCERELY,
Admiral Richard Barnett

You have just been accepted into THE most prestigious academy in the entire galaxy. And the most well known as well. Your term begins now, in the Fall of 2253. The Enterprise has recently taken off for another five year mission with its Captain Christopher Pike and his first officer Spock of Vulcan.
Among entering and returning students are James T. Kirk at the ripe age of twenty, Doctor Leonard McCoy, Fresh out of Medical school (and a nasty divorce), and Montgomery Scott, an acting student instructor.
Among these students there are also all kinds of aliens, big and small, from Andorians to Orions to Denebians to Tellarites.
Good luck in your academic ventures, and of course, Live Long and Prosper.

"The Kobiyashi Maru is more than a test of fast thinking and skill of a would-be commander, I'll tell ya that much," Montgomery Scott was walking the hall with the Admiral in characge of the entire academy, dressed in a red jumpsuit and sporting a Starfleet-issued ballcap with the logo of the Constitution Class USS Excalibur on the front-right of it in a shimmering gold stitched itno the red, "That simulation sir is to test the patience of those of us in the Engineering field. Those of us assigned to fixing that mess those little hopefuls make in the first place."

The admiral simply lifted both eyebrows in an amused manner, "I'm not sure that's quite it, Lieutenant. It's mostly the work of the computer programmers."

Scott folded both arms and stared the Admiral down until the man seemed to understand.

The admiral nodded, "They're makign you do the work, I understand Lieutenant," He surpressed a smile and pat the younger Scotsman on the shoulder in an amicable manner, "Well hopefully that young Lieutenant's defeat will have scared all of the other contestants away for at least a month."

Scott shook his head and replied: "Well it is quite a simulation, I'll give that to the creator, but how in the world do you expect to ever get another Starship captain with a test like that in the lad or lassie's way?"

"Don't think it's beatable Mr. Scott?"

"I happen to know that it's not, sir."

"Snippy, aren't we?"

"Not that it matters anyhow sir, I ain't interested in aythin' but engineerin'." He shrugged, "Never been much for responsibility."

"Being an engineer on a Starship is a huge responsibility."

"Aye sir, but I know my way around a nacell. Sure I could tell a couple hundred people what they need to do but that's not my place sir, that's why we got big brash commandin' folk like you." Scott smiled and then remembered to whom he was speaking, "Ah would you look at the time? I gotta get my rear end to my first class of the day! All the way across the campus! All the way!" He started off as quickly as his legs would carry him to the pod station on the fifth level which would transport him across the campus.

The Admiral simply laughed to himself and continued to go about his duties.

---

Outside of Montgomery Scott's classroom stood an anxious lot, mostly first-years, who were all nervous they may never get into their classroom, that maybe they were in the wrong building or worse: they missed a memo to meet elsewhere. In actuality they had only been outside of the classroom for about three minutes past start time. Fifteen minutes, the unwritten rule was, that the class would simply disperse and reconvene the following day for a better start.
Among the first years biting their nails, stood a third-year Andorian with his cell phone out, holographic screen up and texting on the laser-created buttons. He of course, was unafraid, if the instructor didn't show up today, he'd show up tomorrow, that was life. If not tomorrow, he wasn't a very reliable teacher, or he had died in some horrible starship-related explosion. The latter was just as likely here.
Despite being Andorian, the student was texting in Romulan with a classmate of his. Once the text was sent, he pushed together the two stick-like sides of the device and tucked it into his front pocket.
Behind him he heard a first-year frantically worrying to a classmate that this was some kind of test, or that they had missed a memo to meet elsewhere. Her friend worried in return what their instructor would be like.
Khiiv, the experienced Andorian, turned to explain to the girls that their fears were unlikely to be realized, "This is a class with a Student Instructor," he began, "Usually their pretty lenient, my last student instructor used to let us out fifteen minutes early every class because he had to make it to his own class. It's unlikely with this one, because he has three classes after us, but still, he's probably just a guy who's really enthusiastic about Engineering."
The girls stared at him for a minute before one of them finally spoke up, "are your antennae real?"
Khiiv rolled his eyes in an annoyed manner. First years were always the same. Even when he was one, "Oh that instructor had better get here soon."

---

Just then, Montgomery Scott rounded the corner with both arms filled. An old component from inside of an obviously used-up ship, "You guys are locked out? I'm sorry about that! I got a bit caught up cleanin' the mess of a certain Lieutenant who decided to attempt the Kobiyashi Maru today. Students, let me just let ya in on a little advice about the Kobiyashi Maru: don't. Whatever you're thinkin' about it, just, do yerself this favor and don't." He Carried the device into the classroom whose door opened upon his arrival welcoming him personally into the room.
In its cheerful female voice, "Welcome Lietenant Scott," the computer announced.
The instructer placed the device on a desk at teh front of the room and told everyone what to do: "Alright then, put your bags down and everyone gather up here."

The students all did as told, some rushed to get to teh front, eager and excited on their first day of classes in the Academy, that enthusiasm would end soon.

"Alright, someone, without the assistance of a mobile device, tell me what this is, and why it is the most important thing you'll ever see in a Starship - in any ship as a matter of fact."
The Scotsman took a seat behind the desk and reached forward to spin the device for them.
Indented, purposely, in it was a trapezoidal shape with notches on the side, the rest of the device was silver, made of metal and obviously pulled away from wires it had been attatched to.
Scott noticed how nervous many of the students looked and he gave them a soft smile, "It's alright lads, lassies, take yer time, ya got a whole semester with me to tell me what it is. But, if one of you happens to know it now, well, ya have the floor."

James Kirk stood close to the front, not by choice, but because the crowd had pushed him forward. The student teacher he looked to acted like this was supposed to be a hard question. James chuckled to himself, but when silence came over his fellow group of students, James was shocked.
Looking around he met confused and worried faces, and few hot girls in the group as well, but he was still a little surprised no one seemed to know. Sighing and realizing her was the only one that knew he tossed his hand up into the air "That would be a Dilithium Crystal chamber" that said he dropped his hand down.

Avrak had been intending to let the first years answer the question. Yet she hadn't expected any one to, hell she didn't know the answer herself, and she didn't really care to know. Engineering was an interest of hers, but only if it had to do with weapons. Shuffling farther to that back of the class she pulled out a small cell phone device and began texting a friend a few classes away.

"Aye, lad. Very good." Scott glanced up at the pride-filled boy and stared, waiting for the boy to continue, and when it didn't seem he was going to, he asked, "Ya gonna finish up the question?" Seeing past him though, he rolled his eyes, "Phone away, lass, I haven't gotten ta warn ya all yet, but every cell phone I see I'm taking apart and givin' ta the first years ta try an' put back tagether!"
Sections of the class chuckled a bit and Scott returned his attention to the first year in front, "What about you, Mister Kirk, ya think ya could reassemble a measly li'l mobile device?"

Khiiv ch'Dani decided this waiting was getting them nowhere and spoke for this "Mister Kirk" as he heard. Humans, he probably knew the teacher beforehand. If not, he'd be pretty shocked if this student teacher just knew everyone. Actually, that would be mighty scary. Oh well, "The dilithium crystal chamber is the most vital part of a Starship, or any ship for that matter, since not only would the ship njot run without the crystals, the life support and other systems would fail to work as well. In teh chamber the dilithium crystals are not only broken down and put to use fueling the ship, the chamber itself separates the needed power into its four sections: the ship's engine, the ship's life support, the ship's lighting and communications and emergency back-up power which can be pumped into any of the three other systems. All stoarages of the crystal are also divided for a second time, this time by section of the ship, so that any one section can have its power cut when another one needs it more."

Scott wore a slightly impressed smile, "Impressive mister ch'Dani." He turned to Kirk, "Sorry mister Kirk, looks like he got to it first." He stood, putting a hand on the chamber and continuing, "Now, if everyone will just take a seat, wherever you like, we'll get started."

While ch'Dani was very interested in how the student teacher knew his own name, he took a seat in the front, tossing his bag to his feet. This class might not be a waste of his time after all.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 03, 2010 12:08 pm

James was confused he didn't know the student teacher. But that blue boy, James could tell he was gonna be some to watch out for. Smiling James choose the seat next to the blue alien. "Hi ya, so I take it you're smart?" James was always right to the point.

Avrak groaned and took a seat behind the two boys. She wasn't willing to lose her cell phone on her first day of school. "I can tell this class is gonna be a blast." she grumbled as some one sat down next to her.

"Aren't you a bit more interested in how that student teacher knows both of our names?" ch'Dani rolled his eyes, "And I'm not a prodigy, I've just been on a Starship before." He finally looked at him, "He called you Kirk, Midshipman? I'm Khiiv ch'Dani, ensign."

Scott waited for all of the midshipmen, ensigns and sub-lieutenants to be seated before he scanned over the clss with a smile, "Alright, let's just get it out there, I know you're not all planning on being engineers, some of you might never be on a Starship - that's probably not something you want to hear of course but it's life- fact of the matter is, engineering is very important, therefore, you're all going to learn as much as you possibly can in the semester you have here.
"Not that it's vital information, but I'll be your teacher for the next semester, Lieutenant Montgomery Scott, you can call me whatever you like. You're all adults, but keep in mind I can also call you whatever I like." - A few of the students chuckled - "Now, I'm going to make sure you're all here. I know none of you really expected a post-secondary school to care whether or not you attend class, but this is a naval academy, and your attendance will be counted daily. What does that mean? It means if you're skipping, I know, and your grade suffers. Aye? No blether, no girnin', no palaverin'!"

ch'Dani chuckled to himself at the last sentence, knowing that one of the other students would have caught up with that. Perhaps this student instructer was going to be a bit too Scottish for them. "He said no chatting, complaining or fussing." The class laughed at the fact that the Andorian had to translate for a human.

Scott himself laughed, "Of course, Always good to have a xenolinguist translate for those of us come from overseas, we're a bit difficult to understand at times." He walked over to the large holographic screen at the front of the classroom and began adjusting and opening files.

James smiled and looked up to the bored then back to his eat mate friend. "Hey, so your into learning all those languages, whats a good one to us to pick up chicks?"

Avrak sighed again. the kid infront of her was going to be annoying she could tell already. "Hey you." she leaned forward

James shut his mouth and leaned back to see the girl 'hey you beautiful."

"Can you stop talking to your boyfriend for a few so we can hear the teacher?" Avrak asked in a pleasant voice.

"well of course princess, but only if you agree to have lunch with me later , since I know my boy friend here wont eat with me." James gave her one of his heart capturing grins.

Avrak felt her heart skip a beat, damn he was good "if it gets you to shut up." with that said she sat back into her seat.

James smiled again to the blue boy "Maybe I won't need the language thing."

ch'Dani made a slightly disturbed face and shook it off, "Okay." He noticed what their insturctor was pulling up on the screen and sat back. Today was going to be an easy lesson. He wouldn't need to really pay attention until they got into system diagnostics, after all, that was where he would begin to have knowledge that would apply to his major.

Scott turned around, putting both hands on his desk with a sigh, "Is it necessary to talk in my class Mister Kirk? Miss Avrak? Is it? We've got two hours in here, I'd like you to leave with more than a date for the homecoming dance."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 03, 2010 1:29 pm

James smiled "Oh so you would like to leave with a girl who'd go all the way instead?" He never really thought before he said things. But that was just a James Kirk thing.

Avrak on the other hand appologized "I am sorry sir." she was getting bugged out, how the hell did he know her name? She was freaking out and when she freaked out she didn't pay attention "Scott, sir, is it ok if I ask a small question?"

ch'Dani scoffed at what Kirk said, "Brilliant man, your first class in the Academy and you're testing the instructor?"

Scott rolled his eyes at the Kirk's comment and shook his head, "Boy-o, one day you'll grow up, hopefully it's within the week because I don't feel like dealing with this for too long."
He glanced up to the girl he had just addressed, "Yes, Miss Avrak? What can I do ya for?"
PostPosted: Sun Jan 03, 2010 1:55 pm

James defended himself "well Scotty your the one who said you wanted more then a prom date."

Avrak butted in. "I am just wondering how you seem to know our names? I mean, I have never met you before, and didn't know your name before you said it." She folded her arms over her chest and leaned back into her seat.

"Very good Observation, Miss Avrak. I'll show you." Scott ignored Kirk completely this time, hoping that maybe he'd run out crying if he didn't get the proper amount of attention.
Scott opted to use the computer's voice command feature, since he could face the class that way, "Computer, open file: project three four zero point three three two." The computer immediately pulled up a page filled with all kinds of equations, technical jargon and a lot of semingly unseless numbers and letters.
"Class, this is project three four zero point three three two, Otherwise known as-" Scott paused to roll his eyes upward in disbelief that he was about to share this with the class "- Whatshisname." He sighed, "You'll have to excuse the engineering department, they don't get out much."
"Now, you're wondering how it works, I bet. This device uses facial recognition technology from as far back as the twenty-first century, and compacts it into a microscopic chip that connects directly to our database here, it feeds infromation direction onto the screen that it sees through, as well as any information one sets as 'default' on. For me, it's name and rank. It can pull up information as obscure as your last dissertation, however."
"The technology is located on a contact lense, here, let me give youa view of what I'm seeing. Computer, main screen view: project three four zero point three three two, sub-file Project administartor, live footage."
The computer's screen once more changed with a flash, this time however, the view was the class, reflected back, in full color but with small lines and words by each individual person, and whatever Scott focused on, the program focused on. He let the class get out their "Oohs" and "Aahs" before he turned to the side, "Computer, terminate program." The computer returned to its desktop background and minimized files.
"Any more questions, class?" He smiled, "Perhaps you'll want to hear of the brilliant mind to develop such breakthrough technology?"

"Humor us," ch'Dani was the first to speak. The rest of the class seemed either stunned by the technology, or baffled by the question, "Who thought up such an idea - obviously they're in the advanced engineering department."

"Obviously," Scott smiled, "Why yours truly, actually. Unfortunately, I let the rest of the class come up with a name for it, which is why I prefer calling it by its raw file name." He shook his head, "Anyhow, why don't we continue with our first lesson?"
PostPosted: Sun Jan 03, 2010 2:40 pm

James didn't miss a beat "Wow, but it would be twice as impresive if you could see through girl's clothes." He smiled when a fee other guys in the class chuckled and nodded.

Avrak sighed "men." she rolled her eyes and tryed to focus on what was going to be on the board.

"Mister Kirk, how long will you be crying for attention in my class? Just because you're not smart enough to get the material, doesn't make it necessary for you to distrub the rest of the class while they're trying to learn."

"Damn Kirk," one of the boys in the back shouted, "Need some ice for that third degree burn?"

"Alright, I don't want his comments I don't want your either!" Scott was over being tested by these kids, and this was a military academy after all. "Next person to talk out of turn is responsible for the whole class failing for today."
Everyone shut up.
Scott smiled, "Now, shall we move on to the lesson?" He nodded and answered, "Good. Now, an important lesson in the basics is first knowing your way around a Starship." He directed the class's attention to their own desks, "Alright, on all yer desks there's a card with the Semester's outline on it, click on the first tab, it'll be everything you need to know for the first test next Wednesday."
