An NPC can be used as a pet or slave. The only thing you have to do is go out and capture one. You would have to beat it to the point of death and take it captive. When a player takes a NPC as a pet the pet is now under their control. It is up to you to keep it alive and make it stronger. Pets/slaves are just like you, they get stronger through experience and scrolls. You can name a capture NPC if it doesn’t already have a name and can put it in you profile under inventory.
