The suburbs.

To some, the little bush-lined roads and mismatched houses were trademarks of a mediocre lifestyle. They represented middle-class in all it's glory, complete with brightly colored seasonal flags, faded front porches, and mailboxes painted in every possible color. Some of them were tacky and out of date, faded flags with Jack-o-Lanterns fluttering in the cold winter breeze. Others were brightly lit with the décor of the season, white-wire reindeer bending stiff metal necks to graze along their snow-covered yards.

Aree, as she strolled down the sidewalk, found it all strangely charming. The half-formed snowmen in the middle of every other yard, the deep divots of snow angels on the small front lawns, even the scoops of snow taken from atop the mailboxes to make snowballs. It was all representative of the fact that there was still something solid, something utterly and boringly normal to be found in the world. While she might pity these people their mediocrity, she also understood the value of having something standard to hold onto.

It had only been slightly surprising when Audrey had invited her over. Being in the Negaverse, you didn't have much time for a social life. You were friends with the Negaverse. You told your secrets to the Negaverse. If you had to sit around eating chocolate and watching bad romantic comedies, you did so with the god damned Negaverse. Unfortunately, the Negaverse didn't make a good shoulder for crying, and it laughed at all the wrong parts of your sad, dramatic little life. In fact, the Negaverse sucked at anything other than providing you power and giving you an overzealous desire to use it.

Aree tugged at the sleeves of her winter coat, pulling her arms through and slinging the bulky, patched jacket over one arm as she ascended the stairs that lead to Audrey Collins front door. Her black sweater was form-fitting but faded, her faded jeans patched in several places. Aree Cadence might have been pretty, she might have been graceful, but she was poor as hell and had all the social grace of someone in a coma. She shifted a brown paper bag from one arm to the other.

Tap, tap, tap, rapped her knuckles upon the front door.

Everything was where it needed to be. The fridge was stocked with clear soda, diet soda, normal soda, and her personal favorite Warcraft Mountain Dew. It was delicious, and she could drink it as long as she ripped off the label with goddamn Tyrande on it. Night Elves were possibly only slightly better than gnomes when it came to Hated Alliance Races, and she refused to have that sodding priestess staring at her while she played her way through Wintergrasp.

Hours put into the game were much fewer lately, and the Negaverse was the main reason for it. She was throwing her life into the organization, and now, she was trying to make a friend. Her, Audrey Collins. A friend. Biting her bottom lip in a critical gesture, she surveyed her bedroom one more time. The daybed was padded with the new pillows her mom had made up upon request, facing the desk. The coffee table had been pilfered from the living room and loaded with three kinds of chips, with matching dips, and four candies. Pasha would've squealed with delight, had he seen the snack feast before him.

But he wasn't coming tonight. Aree was. Taking a deep breath, she pulled one more time at the long lavender tunic, tied at the waist with a silk scarf. She was so tiny, it worked easily as a casual house outfit, reaching nearly to her knees. Her legs were encased in one of her favorite, habitual pairs of pale gray stockings, which were layered under a big pair of black knee socks.

After all, it was still the middle of winter! Glancing at the clock and tugging at her hair nervously, the teen all but jumped out of her skin when the door rang hollowly with the impact of the knocking. "Coming!" came the crackling call, voice breaking nervously. This would either be very good, or very bad. Breathlessly, she yanked open the door and beamed at the patchy young woman on her doorstep.

"Hi! Come on in, it's freezing, don't wanna let the heat out, you know? Dad's already pretty much a terror about the whole thing, bills right?" Babbling. She was babbling. Dammit.

If Andeon were present, he would get one sight of the Warcraft Mountain Dew and promptly hug Audrey and never, ever let go.

For Aree, the only response was to think that Audrey was undeniably, surprisingly, insanely...adorable. Adorable enough that the usually stoic young woman cracked a small smile and muttered her thanks as she strolled in the door. Aree was.. stupidly tall for a woman, but the frame was thankfully tall enough that s**t didn't have to duck her head as she crossed the threshold.

The interior was just as charming to Aree as the exterior had been. Quaint, unassuming, and painfully tidy. It was a far cry from the barely-furnished, completely undecorated apartment she had inherited from Ursula. She forced a small smile as she glanced around. What was she supposed to say? Nice house? Cute dress? Hell, this entire social scene has always evaded Aree as though she was somehow poisonous to it. After a long, awkward moment of silence, she decided on something.

“I brought Cheetos.”

Audrey'd been biting her lip and fidgeting as Aree surveyed her house. Purple hair like that was memorable, and she'd never seen it gracing the halls of Meadowview, which made this girl a Crystal girl. The shabby clothes were a bit of a throw, but hey, distressed was in wasn't it? Ripped jeans all in the mall, all sorts of things the bluenette would never wear. Her parents' cozy but decidedly middle-class house was probably weird.

But at the mention of Cheetos, Audrey's eyes lit up and she all but clapped in excitement. They had something in common! "Oh awesome! We have some upstairs, but I'm a bit of a cheeto vacuum, you know? Extra is awesome!" Lightly snagging the girl by the wrist, she hauled her through the door to their left, and straight into the kitchen to the fridge there. "I didn't know what you liked so uhm..." Shrugging, she pulled the door open and spoke around the door. "Just take whatever. I mean, dad's beer is off-limits, but other than that it's game."

Seeing how the Negaverse usually served as an AA meeting, this last statement was not entirely out of place. "If you grab something, we can just head upstairs. You'll probably run into mom, and dad's home later, but I try not to bother her when he's not here." Audrey often went out of her way to not see her mother, and to someone who knew her a bit more, this was strange.

As the sub-lieutenant chose her soda, the other girl all but slammed her hand in the fridge and excitedly dragged her upstairs. It'd been awhile since her sleepover with Pasha on her birthday, and to have another Negaversian - a GIRL Negaversian to boot! was a major occasion.

She let out a small laugh as Audrey tugged her along, intrigued by the girl's apparent excitement. It was difficult for Aree to separate the world in which she was supposed to live and the one in which Tanzanite existed, but Audrey seemed so... normal. Happy. Like a teenage girl should be. It was fascinating, even a bit contagious. A grin found its way onto her face, and seemed to stay there longer than usual before fading to an expression of curiosity mixed with excitement.

“I have Gone With The Wind,” she said as they climbed the stairs, “And Labyrinth.” While she loved both of those movies, her real reason for bringing them was that they were two of the only acceptable choices in the $1 rental section. After all, Aree didn't have money to be dropping on pricey $4.99 new releases.

Audrey stopped almost dead at the top of the stairs, and turned down to stare incredulously at her guest. Slowly her eyes got wider and wider and then the grin returned again to almost swallow her face as she spoke. "You...you like Labyrinth? Oh God. Thank you God." She was half-afraid that any of her collection wouldn't have been to the girl's choice. Of course, it didn't take long to browse Netflix, but if they'd had to watch something like Samurai Princess Hoshiko all night she would have probably screamed and cried.

Blue curls swirled as she hauled again on Aree's hand, and with a flourish, opened her bedroom door to show the arrangement. There wasn't a whole lot of floor space with the coffee table, but it was a cozy and homey arrangement. "I figure we can just run things through the computer, and this way we don't have to take up the living room, you know?" Nervously, she plopped down onto the far corner of the daybed and gestured a bit oddly. "Just sorta put your things wherever, and we don't worry about eating up here, we can always just pull off the top sheet and shake it out when we're done."

Introductions and tours done with, Audrey was a bit at loss for what to say. What did you say to your Negaverse compatriot? 'So, kill anyone interesting lately? The conversation wouldn't seem out of place if they were careful, since the teen often carried on such conversations in her game. But the familiar names might not work so well, and that was the last thing she needed.

“Are there people who don't like Labyrinth?” Aree asked, seeming sincere in the question. She didn't understand how someone could not like a movie that had David Bowie and a small army of dancing, singing goblins. It was a staple of Aree's childhood, watching the dusty old VHS cassette over and over until the tape ribbon was so worn that all remained was two hours of long periods of snowwy static punctuated with the occasional snippet of film. She still had the useless tape, stored in a shoebox and tucked under the sofa that served as her bed.

Aree set the bag down on the coffee table, along with her jacket and the soda she's stolen from the fridge. There was an awkwardness between the two of them that stemmed from knowing each other mostly as members of a supernatural organization hellbent on ruling the world. The two of them had ended dozens of lives without batting an eye. It amazed Aree that Audrey seemed so.. normal. She was talkative, charming, slightly shy in a way that made her seem every bit a teenage girl and not at all a Negaverse officer who might someday be more powerful than a battalion of armed men.

The awkwardness would be ended as Aree withdrew the DvD from the case and stared at the computer. For a long moment she looked like a grandparent trying to figure out how to use Facebook. Of course, Aree didn't use Facebook. She didn't use Myspace or Google or anything else. Unlike many of her classmates, Aree hadn't grown up with the internet as her friend. She'd grown up with books and dictionaries in place of Wikipedia, forests and tire swings instead of World of Warcraft. While she knew the very basics of a computer, it had been a while since she had used one. Crystal girls didn't really have to type up reports and research papers. They were dancers, musicians, singers, actresses, and whatnot. Most of them, particularly the good ones, could slide by with minimal academic effort.

Thus, the expression she wore was she turned from the computer to Lina, her cheeks slightly red, was that of a teenage boy having sex for the first time, “Er.. where do I put it?”

A bit more at ease at not having to make the first conversational foray, she smiled again and started to chatter and fill the silence. "I have a hard time finding people that have heard of it! I mean, yeah online it's a cult classic but most of the kids I hang out with were more of the Barney crowd than anything else. They can sing all those stupid songs, but don't know anything about Fraggle Rock!" Of course, they were all children of the nineties, and such eighties foolery was for their older siblings, or parents. Audrey's mother had loved the shows, and specifically bought the older tapes to play for her only child.

But when Aree stared blankly at the technology displayed before her, it was all the bluenette could do to not groan aloud and flop backwards in a dramatic swoon. Didn't anyone in the Negaverse know how to use a computer? Nealite was hopeless, Charonite was beyond hopeless, and Khal probably thought the damn thing was for beating people with.

"Oh! Right uhm...here." Hopping up she all but vaulted over the coffee table and delicately removed the DVD from Aree's slim fingers, bending and pressing the button on the large glowing case whirring on the lowest level of the desk. "Just push the button, drop it in the tray, push lightly." Nudging the drive sent the tray sliding in, and the whirring picked up speed. Soon the decently-sized TV was alight with the DVD menu and with remote in hand, Audrey flopped back down on the bed, making it shudder lightly against the wall.

"I always wanted to be Sarah when I was little. My mom is really good at sewing, and I always had the best Halloween costumes and play dresses and stuff. She was a pretty lame Goblin King though." Blather blather, Audrey shut up, you're making a fool out of yourself!
