Early January, 109
WoodWhisp was careful to swish is tail behind him, doing what he could to hide the paw prints in the snow. Calla would come searching for him, he knew it, but she would be hard pressed to find him. He was doing his best to hide is trail, he kept his thoughts from her, and it wouldn’t take too long now before he was out of range anyway. It wasn’t long before he could see the walls of New Eve’s sister fort through the trees. He stuck to the edge of the forest, scanning to make sure no one was around, before darting out and into the shadows of the trees and into the shadows of the wall. He moved around the edge of the fort, sticking close to the wall and hating his white and orange fur, they made camouflage difficult. Searching for someone in particular……AH! He was lucky for once, she must have been close to the wall as he’d been hoping.
“Twilight?” He asked, hoping not to startle her, “You busy?” WoodWhisp still wasn’t 100% sure why he was here, probably to apologize for Calla’s behavior towards the female’s rider the other day, or possibly to fulfill his promise of telling her the story of throwing Calla into a wall. Or even possibly to show her his quite comfortable lake. In all honesty he really wasn’t sure why he was here but he knew Calla would be mad and Twilight probably wouldn’t come with him. Ah well, it was worth the effort, he wished to sit down in the snow but feared leaving a mark that could be traced, he felt like a pup sneaking out of the den while his mother was asleep. Which in a way he was, sneaking out of his nap while Calla was busy. If she knew what he was doing she would skin him alive and use his fur a coat, she was probably already checking his favorite sleeping places, and probably every roof of Fort in search of him. He chuckled wolfishly at this thought, then quickly closed his mouth hoping no one heard him. He’d like to be able to talk to her face to face, but he knew a New Eve wolf waltzing riderless into White Shadow would draw attention, not to mention Alister would be there and he didn’t really feel like dealing with the irritating man right now.
Calla slipped off the unfamiliar wolf, smiling up at his rider in an inconspicuous and friendly manner. “Thank you so much for going out of your way like this. I can’t find that lazy bag of bones that calls himself a wolf and this message is very important.” Calla lied smoothly. The Private seemed only slightly disgruntled at having to bring her here, but he did nod before turning and heading back into the trees. Calla smirked to herself, she had only slightly lied. It was true that she couldn’t find WoodWhisp, it was true he was a lazy bag of bones, it was also true that this was important at least to her, but it wasn’t a message at all. If anything she was simply bored and needed to do something. And whenever she needed to do something and had nothing to do she found herself at White Shadow, ready to drag Alister away by force if necessary. This was certainly an odd relationship, Calla smirked to herself as she waltzed through the gates to White Shadow, she had never really bothered to hide her presence. She wandered through the Fort unopposed, looking like she knew what she was doing, as she searched all of Alister’s usual locations. She couldn’t help but double check the location of her pistol, as much as the man had his uses he was still a pain and he needed to be kept in line.
A lazy yawn escaped the dark wolf as she stretched back arching and tail swaying slowly. Alister was in one of his moods again, and that meant she was staying as far away from him as possible. The thought made her snort softly as the brief memory of the man sulking off toward the back of the fort with his violin crossed her mind.
It was snowing so Alister and his moods could be accepted, if only vaguely so. Still that didn't stop the somewhat annoyed words that came to mind. "Men..." Heaving a sigh as she slunk along the outer wall Twilight almost didn't hear the soft male voice calling out to her the first time. The second time however her ears pricked forward and she tilted her head to one side glancing toward the wall before a small almost mischievous grin crossed her maw.
"If avoiding a moody rider is what you call busy..." She said shrugging lightly. If there was one thing Twilight never was, it was busy.
Twilight had gotten snippy with him when she'd seen him packing his violin and heading out. Of course the wolf always got snippy with him these days when she saw him with the instrument. Dismissing the behavior as a natural case of feminine hormones he'd simply shrugged and went his way while Twilight had went hers
Now seated under a tree he'd claimed as his, Alister stretched before setting the violin against his shoulder and began to play completely unaware of the fact that he was being hunted. Of course hunted or not he always kept his pistol on him just in case any...unexpected...visits happened."That makes two of us. Calla's bored and that's never a good thing for me." WoodWhisp's tone was light and playful, "But isn't that man always moody?" He pointed out. From the little bit he'd seen of Alister he had deduced it was nearly impossible to find him in a good mood. Whisp shook his head, removing the thought from his mind before turning his attention back to Twilight. "Well since we both have people to avoid, I happen to know a very good avoidance spot if you care to join me?" WoodWhisp ask, part of him hoping she would for some unexplainable reason, part of him realizing it was just as likely she would shoot him down. Either way it was better than being stuck hanging around a bored Calla, bad things always seemed to happen when Calla was bored. And anyway he needed to apologize on behalf of his rider for her actions the other day, and now was a good time for he really didn’t feel like taking a nap, in all honesty he just felt like hanging out. Moving closer to where he estimated her location to actually be her swished his tail behind him to clear away as much of his footprints as he possibly could. Yes this was a bit slow going but he really didn’t want Calla to find him, or to be spotted by others in the Fort.
Calla charged about the fort, she didn’t bother to stop and ask if anyone had seen him, she would only do that after checking one last spot. There was tree, it was towards the back of the fort and she had found him there only once or twice but it was still a possible frequent. As she got closer to the tree, a soft sound began drifting to her ears. The woman stopped, listening intently she picked up the sound of a violin, and a well played one at that. She moved forward slowly, quietly, the sound got louder. Beneath the earthen brown bangs Calla’s brow furrowed in curiosity. Could that be Alister? There was no frigging way, he didn’t have the heart to play music. Calla continued her painfully slow, silent trek to the tree, pausing at the edge of a building she crouched down, ignoring the snow, and peeked around the corner. Sure enough there was the cold, heartless man sitting in the snow, instrument in hand. For awhile Calla just sat and listened, she didn’t think the man had it in him to play music; music was never good unless heart and emotion was put into it, but this was surprisingly well played. But eventually, as beautiful as the music was, curiosity and impatience won out and she stood up. Moving around the corner and crossing the empty space between them she stopped and stared down at him. “I didn’t know you played violin. Very well if I do say so myself.” For once in her life Calla spoke quietly, still half listening to the music before he had a chance to respond to her, and probably get angry.
Giving a soft snort Twilight shook herself, tail fanning out behind her as she shook her head in one fluid motion. "You'd be surprised. Alister can actually be quite....human should the mood strike him." Letting out a hearty laugh at the thought the femme quieted watching WoodWhisp for a moment as he moved closer hiding his tracks as he went. A chance to slip out of the fort for a while without having to alert her rider of where she was going...such a lovely thought but it made her nervous all the same. Mentally berating herself, the darker wolf huffed before giving a light grin. "If its a chance to escape this place and our riders for a while then I'd love to." She said carefully treading closer to the wall. "I know an easier way than that to get us out of here. Anything to get out of the stuffy fort before she went mad. If it wasn't Alister and his moods it was someone else. A little annoyed scowl crossed her maw for a moment before she tossed it away. Males called females moody as if they had yet to take a good hard look at themselves. That, was a point she was going to make sure to knock into Alister's head when she got back. Maybe the man would actually get it this time.
Pressing her side against the wall lightly she began to trek along its length heading toward the entrance. A wonderful little trick she'd learned in her years of staying here. "Follow exactly where I walk, so if anyone happens to come checking...they won't think anything of just one wolf leaving the fort." Ears pricked forward Twilight paused on ocassion to listen for any sound of an approaching wolf or human before continuing on. It would be slow going but it would get them out of the fort.
There was one thing Alister had learned at a very early age, and that peace could never last forever. That almost painful lesson was making itself true again as his moment of silence and solitude was broken first by footsteps in the snow and then a voice. A voice that he knew too well from other days of torment. The New Eve Private had turned up, which wasn't a good thing as far as he was concerned. Letting his body go through the motions of a song he'd played countless times, two mismatched eyes opened and settled on Calla for a moment before a slight smirk of amusement tugged at his lips. "There are plenty of things about me you don't know. Plenty of things..." The song's tempo increased for a several long moments as he kept his unwavering brown and green gaze on the woman. "..I don't plan on telling you about." Slowly, ever so slowly the song began to slow until it finally faded leaving nothing but silence. Lowering the violin he settled it back in the mahogny box at his feet. Finished with that task he leveled his full attention on Calla. WoodWhisp grinned, "I guess that's one of those things I'd have to see to believe." He replied, making no attempt to hide the sarcasm, he was pretty sure Twilight would understand that he was simply joking and not be offended. WoodWhisp followed easily in her prints, though his larger paws did slightly changed the shape and size as he did so. "Out always seems so much easier than in." WoodWhisp said with a mock sigh, "Reminds me of when I was pup, that one time I tried to sneak into the sunlight." He said chuckling, he and his brother had gotten chewed out over that one and his mom had kept an eye on him for a week. Not that it had been necessary; he'd spent most of his time as a pup asleep. Calla had called him Narcoleptic, though at first he hadn't really been sure what that meant. Shaking the tangent from his head he returned his attention to the female in front of him, “Hypothetically speaking if I asked how old you are would I make it out of that situation alive and uninjured? Hypothetically speaking of course.” He asked, though he knew she was smart enough to see through his trick and would probably hurt him anyway, he felt the need to ask though. Of course he would respond with his own age, but that never seemed to bother guys as much as it did with women.
Calla sat down cross-legged, ignoring the snow. Temperature never really bothered Calla, she never really stopped long enough to feel cold or hot, never stopped to notice. It had gotten her in trouble plenty of times, borderline hypothermia, a fever of 105 that she hadn’t noticed, nearly gotten her killed. She watched silently as he finished the song, the borderline peaceful feeling she’d been getting from him before quickly changed when he’d noticed her there. There was a vague irritation and a sarcastic amusement that she picked up now, not that it bothered her she simply felt the need to note these things. “I would say the same, but I don’t have anything to tell.” Calla responded as he put the instrument away, the icing of sarcasm hiding the truth baked beneath. “But the fact of the matter is you’re a terribly secretive person. Not that I particularly care.” Calla added, deciding the change the subject, he was a terribly observatory person and would probably notice the half-true sarcasm. “Anyway, I’m bored and you’ve got the short end of the stick this time.” Chuckling her tail swayed as she poked her head around the bend in the wall before continuing on. No one out and about, everyone was probably lazying about inside to stay warm. Something she would have been doing if it wasn't for that fact that she had been doing that for the past few weeks. True the downtime was good but she needed to move...it was in her nature and during the winter especially Alister wasn't too inclined to accommodate her nature. "If you're around when Alister strikes up with his music again I'll be sure to drag you over to hear." Now that would no doubt be and interesting time, the black wolf mused crossing the snowy expanse between the gates and heading toward the forest.
One ear flicked back toward WoodWhisp and Twilight gave a faint but amused huff. "You never ask a lady her age." flicking her tail at his muzzle she flashed a lazy but amused grin over her shoulder at him. "However since you asked so nicely...I'll humor you. Its been ten winters as of this one." Saying it now, she realized that it had been a long time since she'd been bonded. A very long time since she'd had the urge to throw herself headfirst into a snow drift just for the sake of soaking her rider.
Good times but she'd been younger then...much younger.. Shaking her head she let out a puff of air from her lungs. "You've made me realize just how old I am now." Giving a soft laugh she stretched. "No wonder the younger wolves try to stay on my good side. Amusing but sad at the same time. Then again, age wasn't determined by how long one lived but more by how one felt. Fluffing her tail as she pushed those mildly depressing thoughts from her head, she settled her gaze on WoodWhisp, she gave a faint smile. "So...where's this hidey-hole of yours?"
Little lies and half truths, Calla's words were filled with them but he wasn't too pressed to persue that particular topic. The mention of boredom was more than enough to put him on edge though he kept his calm but amused appearance in place. The last thing he needed was for this woman to pick up on any...apprehension. "Terribly sorry to hear that..but what do you expect me to do about it?" Quirking an eyebrow at her, Alister reached up to tuck a lock of red tipped blond hair behind one ear, his attention still focused on Calla. WoodWhisp chuckled, “I’d like to see that actually, you’ll have to give me a heads up.” He said, noticeably less sarcasm in his voice this time around. He was glad to be out of the fort as they rounded the corner and quickly bounded into the woods, pausing at the edge of the trees to make sure Twilight was still with him. When he was sure she was he went a bit deeper in and waited for her to catch up. “You think you’re old? I myself am ten, going on eleven here pretty soon as Calla keeps reminding me.” WoodWhisp explained keeping up his fair end of the deal. He smiled as he picked up the pace a bit, glad to be out and moving in the woods. It might be hard to get him to wake up, but once he was he simply didn’t know how to take things slow, there was no grey area between Sleep and being On The Go for him. He wove through the trees with ease as if he’d been through this part of the forest a thousand times before. “It’s just a bit north of here actually. Very comfortable for being a frozen lake.” WoodWhisp explained as he moved, glad Twilight did actually seem interested in hanging out with him and not just trying to get away from her rider. As he spoke though he realized he was going the wrong direction, “Heheh which is, y’know, that way.” He said, mildly embarrassed at the error before changing direction and moving towards where the lake was.
Calla smirked, picking up on the edgey feeling her words had given him. She tried not to laugh, so as not to give away the empathy she was constantly hiding from others. Coming off as being sensitive to that sort of thing would completely ruin her image as the dominating, boy-looking, violent private that she was. She watched intently as he brushed aside his hair, letting the question hang in the air a moment. After a satisfactory second or two she grinned almost maliciously and stared him sternly in the eye. “Tell me Alister, what do you think I want you to do about it.” She asked her tone hushed and serious, almost ominous.
Dipping her muzzle to hide the amused grin and laugh as she followed WoodWhisp and his change of direction. Twilight's ears pricked forward swiveling this way and that. She knew it was winter and there was no reason to worry about the centipedes but that didn't stop her from being on her guard. "You have such a wonderful sense of direction." she said chuckling being more playful than anything else.
Tail swaying happily, she tilted her head to one side, eying tracks in the snow heading in the opposite direction. A rabbit, no doubt, a small rabbit. Any other day she might have followed those tracks just for the sake of giving the poor creature a scare and nothing more but today she was more interested in seeing this...'comfortable' frozen lake. "I find it hard to believe...a frozen lake is comfortable you know."
Those...were the words he had seriously been hoping he didn't hear coming out of the woman's mouth. The very same words that had his hand inching closer to his pistol, also had him turning several shades paler...which to any passing innocent bystander would have him looking very close to the color of the falling snow. "You did not come all the way from New Eve, bored or not just to torment my soul with...that now did you?" he was hopeful...but that hope was quickly fading with each passing moment and he was more so looking for a route of escape than anything else. Calla was bored...and he was cornered, mentally he groaned why did he feel that this wouldn't turn out well?Woodwhisp trotted on determined after his little blunder."Hey now! My sense of direction is flawless!” WoodWhisp spoke up in his defense, but his tone was still joking, “I just don’t happen to know the area as well as SOME.” He pointed out, pausing for just a moment to make sure he was still going in the right direction. Satisfied that he was he picked up his pace again, looking over his shoulder to make sure Twilight was still with him. “Y’know. I thought the same thing too at first. But I figured it was comfortable enough during the summer and I was out of hiding places so.” WoodWhisp shrugged as he spoke, “I figured she’d never think I’d go there in the winter and discovered it to actually be pretty comfy with the right amount of snow.” WoodWhisp explained cheerfully. To be perfectly honest part of him was in disbelief that he could take anyone to his and Calla’s private spot, the place they relaxed and calmed down after a round of Centipedes. That place was secret, special, and he especially couldn’t belief he was taking a White Shadow wolf there. If Calla found out she’d be wearing his fur as a coat.
Calla had already noticed the hand moving towards the gun, she also noticed the change in skin tone and the felt the fear and small amount of hoping coming from him. But all these things Calla ignored, she knew that with Alister you could never believe what you saw on the surface. The violin today was just another piece of evidence to that fact. Calla reached forward and rested her hand on Alister’s shoulder, her darker skin standing out against the white of his uniform. “Of course Alister, why else would I come all this way? You know I can’t stand to sit around doing nothing. Unless, there is something else you can think of?” Calla smirked as she said this, her tone still ominous. Alister was a smart, cunning man and she had just tossed him a bone, he could get out of this. If he wanted to. It all deepened on how much he wanted to work. "Of course it is~ All males have a flawless sense of direction, remember?" A slight flash of a wolfish grin and the femme shook some of the falling snow from her back, making sure to keep pace with WoodWhisp which...wasn't too hard for the moment."The world is full of surprises it seems then." Stepping lightly and briskly, Twilight was careful to skirt the deeper parts of the snow, not wanting to find out of there was ice beneath them or not.
Heaven knew her last run in with not-so stable ice had almost been the end of both her and her rider. Of course almost drowning would have made anyone wary of a lake frozen or not, but not her. There was a stubbornness, a will to prove that she wasn't afraid to venture back to the place that had almost been her grave. Alister now...he was another story. He wouldn't go near the lake without a reason...a very very good reason to be perfectly honest. Shaking her head with a soft sigh, she flexed her claws in the snow forcing down the depressing memories. Multiple near death incidents often made one wiser...dwelling on those memories often made one insane.
"You know...you never did tell me what happened when you tossed Calla into a wall." Lifting her head she set mismatched gold and green eyes on the orange and white wolf in front of her.
"I'm sure you can find someone else to amuse you...carnal or otherwise." Dropping his shoulder and scooting away from Calla. The more space he put between himself and that woman the better. Especially with just where her attentions seemed to be focused. "Besides that...I'm sure you can find something better to do." He'd recognized his way of escape but of course...that way of escape still meant dealing with Calla, and it by no means was a sure one that the woman wouldn't still attempt to pursue her original interest when it was all said and done.“Precisely my point!” WoodWhisp exclaimed, playfully ignoring the fact that it was supposed to be a joke. Her turned back over his shoulder and grinned at Twilight goofily. As he turned back around to make sure he was still heading in the right direction pain coarsed through his nose and he stumbled back a few paces and fell into the snow, blinking confusedly. In his failure to see where he was going, being more intent on Twilight, he found himself stumbling face first into a tree. In an attempt to hide his laughter at himself he stuck his nose into the snow to dull the pain. “Ow, Totally meant to do that by the way.” WoodWhisp pointed out in mild sarcasm shaking his head before pulling himself together and standing back up. Shaking off the snow he was vaguely reminded of time he’d charged straight through a snow drift he’d through was a hill and came out the other side face first into a rock. But for now that was a story he was going to keep to himself. “Tossed Calla into a wall?” He asked vaguely, pulling himself out of his memories and turning back towards Twilight, “OH! YES! The wall!” The memory came flooding back to him as he began to move again, this time determined to keep his eyes on where he was going. “Well you see I was only about a year and a half old at the time, Calla had just started actually riding me and that severely damaged my napping time.” WoodWhisp pointed out, pushing through a bush and into a clearing. Now all that stood between them and the lake was a small straggle of trees. Fortunately with the snow you couldn’t see the final destination until you were right up on it. “So anyway Calla found me in the middle of nap, she told me there would be food in it if we went back to camp but I could tell she was lieing. Can’t lie to someone you can read your mind. I played along though, let her climb on. But then I saw my chance, took off running. Charged about the forests for awhile to give a taste, but then it was getting dark so I headed back to the fort. Came charging in but I didn’t know the layout really well just yet so I had to stop short before running into the side of one of the offices. Calla unfortunately wasn’t holding on so as I stopped she kinda went flying over my head and into the wall.” WoodWhisp laughed at the memory as he trotted through the open space, getting ever closer to the secret spot. “Calla broke her nose, her left arm, and I think even cracked a rib. Not to mention her Patron was FURIOUS with me, hilarious to watch him rant and rave.” As he finished the story he stopped short. From here he could see the glittering surface of the solid, snow covered lake. He was, as always, mesmerized by the way the sun played on the patches of snow and ice reflecting the world around them. Turning back towards Twilight he sat down and grinned at her expectantly. “Ladies first.”
Calla sighed, on the verge of being over-dramatic but her eyes completely serious. “If only I did, it seems all my usual duties are going to the young bloods.” She sounded almost forlorn as she said this, though it nicely covered up the fact that it was a total lie. Indeed even WoodWhisp had pointed out she seemed to be shoving off more and more of her duties to the newer privates of the fort. And though she was sure WoodWhisp knew why she liked to pretend he didn’t. “And here you are, ignoring the efforts of a young honest woman’s attempts to lie and deceive all just to see you.” Calla stared down at the snow sadly as she spoke, her tone softer and quieter, though in the back of her mind she simply couldn’t stop laughing at the whole act. So the man had indeed turned down her escape offer, which meant he didn’t want her completely gone after all.
Tilting her head forward she didn't even bother to hide the rich laughter at both the story and the fact that WoodWhisp had just run into a tree, of course part of her felt guilty for that but that didn't stop her amusement. A bit sadistic? Maybe. Chuckling as she slowly began to sober up, Twilight's eyes gleamed as she moved to stand next to WoodWhisp head tilted with her eyes half lidded. "If I was her Patron I'd probably be doing the same." Keeping her voice low, the female wolf chuckled again. "Most of my adventures with Alister when we'd just bonded aren't nearly as lovely as yours I'm sure." Staring to flow past the orange and white wolf, Twilight gave a half hearted smile trying in vain to hide the sudden wave of sorrow. "After all we were prone more to disaster than adventures." Disasters indeed.
Whatever grief ridden thoughts that had started to slip into her mind, were gone as she took the glittering spectacle before her. The feeble rays of winter sun light were bouncing off the surface of the ice creating little glittering ice diamond clusters and rainbows here and there. "Beautiful..." she breathed not looking back at WoodWhisp just yet. The lake was beautiful...and as she began to pad closer, keeping her footsteps light...and deadly. She'd learned just how deadly ice and freezing water could be, the scar on her stomach was testament enough to that. Still...padding down to the edge of the ice she lowered her muzzle to the frozen surface to stare at her reflection. Two mismatched eyes stared back.
Green and gold, green being the eye she shared with a human. A human who, at the moment from the panicked direction of his thoughts was under assault from Calla. A wolfish grin crossed her maw as she lifted her head and turned to stare at WoodWhisp. "Wonderful little hidey-hole this is...and so very beautiful." One ear flicked before the grin spread. "I don't think we have to worry about our riders either...Alister's having a fit at the moment and the fact that I can still hear most of his thoughts...Well I'm sure you can guess where Calla is." Ah, if only he had had a heart to feel for the woman he might have...but as it stood...Alister didn't. That and something wasn't adding up with this story. It was either that or he was just paranoid, which could or could not be a good thing. Eyes narrowing both at the woman's words and the slight wind that picked up, kicking up flurries of snow Alister clucked his tongue and crossed his arms content with the distance between him and the other for the moment. "Why do I find that hard to believe?" Honest attempts his a**. Acts like this were one of the reasons why Alister kept a barrier of ice and gods knew what else up around his mind and heart, it had saved him many a time already. This time would be no different...and if all else failed..he could always retreat to his room and lock Calla out.WoodWhisp followed close behind her, staring down at the ice himself. “Calla and I found this, we got separated from the rest after driving off some centipedes. We’d both been injured and needed to rest.” WoodWhisp explained as he boldly padded out onto the ice, knowing it was thick enough to hold him without so much as cracking from the pressure, “It’s been our secret little place ever since.” He almost whispered the last bit, as if sharing the secret with her. He turned around and winked, swishing his tail to beckon her forth onto the lakes surface. Careful where he stepped, not wanting his paw prints to mare the snowy bits of the surface, he made his way to the center of the lake. “Danger prone? Share some time.” He called back over his shoulder. He was glad to see that his nest was still in perfect condition as he’d left it yesterday and cheerfully flopped down in it. “C’mon out. The ice won’t break, I promise. It’s always been hit by the freeze really hard.” WoodWhisp insisted, sitting down in his nest and looking at her expectantly. In all actuality he hadn’t really been paying Calla and mind, he’d been much to preoccupied with a very different female. Though now that Twilight said something her thoughts and words were very prominent in his mind. Oh, she had plans, ones he would rather not know. Shaking his head in an almost violent manner he shoved her thoughts aside again. He had dragged Twilight from her cozy fort all the way out to his middle-of-no-where frozen lake, the least he could do now was to give her his full and devoted attention. Though that wasn’t hard, as he stared across the ice at her it struck him that this was indeed the only female to ever really catch his eye. “Hey Twilight, odd question but have you ever met anyone?” Even WoodWhisp was slightly shocked by the bold question, though part of him immediately got hopeful that she would say no. That would mean he had a shot, even if she was a White Shadow wolf no one had ever caught his interest like this before.
Calla laughed, completely dropping the innocent girl act. She hadn’t actually thought it would work, Alister was a tricky one, this would certainly require a more charismatic approach. “All right then. Complete honesty it is.” Calla nodded decisively, as if this had been her plan all along. In all actuality she hadn’t really had a plan other than just showing up, she just hoped it would all fall into place from there. Yes, she was bored, and yes she could admit Alister was attractive, but there was something else about him that had drawn her here. “The truth is that, buddy you’re a challenge. And I haven’t had a challenge in a good long while, not since the Academy anyway.” Calla spoke evenly, not really thinking about what she was saying until after it had been said. Though as she thought about it she realized it was truth, she liked to be Challenged and Alister was the biggest challenge she’d had to face yet. “I mean, I could always go for Rayan but that would simply be to easy.” Calla sighed nonchalant, leaning back on her hands, ignoring the chill of the snow on her bare skin. Her dark brown eye’s gazed out at Alister in a stern manner, hiding in them not a twinkle of trickery of a smidgen of sarcasm.
Hesitantly Twilight settled one paw on the snow covered ice before another and then another. "I was two when me and Alister had our first run with the patrol and even though we'd managed to cross the bigger lake south of here the first time, our part of the patrol got stuck on the ice on the way back. Needless to say...we didn't realize just how thin the ice was until it was too late. If it had just been two wolves and their riders or even three the ice would've held up...but five wolves and their riders was too much for the ice...and started breaking up." Slowly padding across the ice and toward where WoodWhisp was Twilight kept her gaze down on the ice feeling more than a little paranoid as she continued her trek and story.
"Three of the other riders were close enough to bank to get back up there before the ice broke up too badly but we got stuck in near the middle with the other pair...naturally the ice looked sound enough to hop across and get back to dry land without getting wet much. So that's what we did...or tried to do. The third section of ice we got to broke up almost as soon as we'd landed on it. Getting dumped into a frozen lake isn't something anyone in their right mind plans on doing...and honestly given the choice I wouldn't have done it either...but it was that or get skewered on the ice.
I was a stronger swimmer than that other wolf and bigger...he tried to force his rider off so that if one of them died it would be him and not the human...didn't work..in the end they did die. The water was too cold and he got tired too quickly. As for me...I barely managed to crawl onto shore, got dragged back to the fort, half dead, and half frozen." Sitting down next to WoodWhisp she tilted her head back staring up at the clouds that passed all the while her throat working. This was the first time she'd ever thought of telling anyone about this..it had been a private tragedy reserved just for her and Alister...but now that she thought about it...leaving it between just them had been foolish.
"I almost died...so did Alister...but that was from his own stubbornness. Refused to let the doctors check him over and make sure he wasn't about to freeze to death until he was sure that I was taken care of. Damned foolish of him...I know. But gods I'd never seen him that scared before...or since. If I'd died I know he wouldn't have survived, and it would have been the same for me."
Turning to stare at WoodWhisp she forced herself to focus on his next question and not her personal sorrow before shaking her head. "No...I haven't taken to anyone...in years. Why?"
"So...I'm to be a personal conquest for you then?" The question was a soft one..almost too soft. The usual thread of annoyance was there but there was a sliver of something else...something much much more dangerous. There was a fine line between what kinds of games he played and which he did not...and this fell to the latter side. True he carried out his own conquests...and Twilight would call him a downright hypocrite if she ever found out but, this wasn't about what he did to others who fell for his honeyed words.
But why...why did his blood boil slightly at the thought? Calla was just another woman he'd pass through his life...another minor...amusement that would be tossed away like a rejected child's toy once he grew bored of her. So why, did he feel all too offended?
The answer was an easy one...and he could almost see Twilight's amused gaze as the words flashed through his mind. "You, Alister Shields...are too proud and too easily riled...despite what you think. Pride and ice are never enough to shield anyone." Pride then...pride and possibly a bruised ego.WoodWhisp shuddered at the story, the thought of never being able to meet this female scared him for some unfathomable reason. He watched her carefully as she spoke, spending too much time with Calla had shown him how to read others a little bit better. At this point it was slightly useful, it was obvious Twilight had never shared this story with anyone, and he was rather touched she chose to tell him. “I’m sorry to hear you lost a colleague so early on, that’s always very hard on a pack.” WoodWhisp agreed, lowering his head briefly in honor of the unknown wolf and their rider. He remembered the first casualty from his younger days. It hadn’t been an ice flow, it had been in the battle. The rider struck by a stray bullet, the wolf was never seen or heard again. It had been hard for Calla to realize this, she was such an optimistic person it had been hard for her to admit at first, and even WoodWhisp had slowed down at the death of his pack mate. WoodWhisp nuzzled the black females shoulder, conveying his comforts and sympathy. “I can see why Alister was worried. To lose you would be devastating to anyone.” WoodWhisp agreed, surprised he could at all be sympathizing with that man. And yet here was completely understanding how Alister felt at the concept of losing Twilight. He was crazy, he’d only known her for a few days and he was already mesmerized by her. Just as he sat here, staring at her and wondering what she was thinking, he must be crazy. “I was, I dunno, just curious I guess.” WoodWhisp pretended to shrug it off but inside he was oddly cheered by this fact. Like it was some really important detail in some plan his subconscious was forming without him. Come to think about it, he had only ever gone with anyone once or twice, and those occasions had never really meant anything to him more than a primal desire. In fact, they had contacted him first. Twilight on the other hand intrigued him.
Calla laughed at his words, almost bitterly. “Yes Alister. You are a challenge, a conquest as you put it.” Calla agreed, her tone had the same fierce, stern tone as her eyes. She examined Alister closely, making a mental note of his mixed reaction to this realization. “But you’re not entirely just another conquest of mine.” Calla added, but she didn’t bother to elaborate. No, she would let him think what he wanted on that because even she couldn’t answer that question right now. Even she wasn’t really sure why she was here in the end. Instead she distracted herself with analyzing the reactions she’d made note of before. The annoyance that was always there, a flare of mild anger, and something else. A much more subtle hint of what seemed to be indignation she picked up in his eyes, and that’s when the whole plan fell into place in her head. That would be what she would play on, this would end in her favor in the end after all. “But I guess if you can’t handle me I can always find someone else. Maybe I will hit up Rayan after all.” She said with a sigh, leaking bitter disappointment in her words, “And here I’d believed I’d found someone who could.” She sat up straighter and brushed herself off, moving to get up. Yes, she would play on his ego, on his pride.

A slight twitch of the tail was the only reaction that came from the black wolf as she felt the slight nuzzle on her shoulder. It wasn't to say, she'd turned cold, it was more the fact that she was pushing back the rest of those memories, and the last big battle that had shredded most of White Shadow's pack. A battle that had left her with the scars on her maw. She'd escaped with her life, for which she counted herself lucky. The wolves and riders that had ridden out in their section of the patrol all hadn't been that lucky.
"After that...I don't think Alister would go near that lake even if you bribed him. As for me...Well." She shrugged tapping the ice under her paws with her claws before giving a soft bark of laughter. "I like to tempt fate."
"I thought curiosity was reserved for felines~" Giving a slight ghost of a smile at some private joke Twilight simply let out a soft yawn and stretched. True the memories were depressing but she was determined not to let even those ruin the occasion...The real question was...what occasion was it?Perhaps she was going crazy in her old age, the thought made her snort softly. Old age, heh, she was certainly wiser than she had been six years ago but that didn't mean she felt the weight of those years just yet. "Dangerous little games you play Calla." Alister's voice retained the low almost whisper like quality it had taken on. Dangerous games normally amused him, but not now. Especially not now. Whatever slivers of mild amusement that had lingered from earlier were gone, leaving a very very clear window to his true nature. There were only so many blows his pride and ego could take before he snapped. As things stood that point was getting closer.
"You, aren't even worth the effort Calla." Straightening he dusted the snow from his violin case and then his clothes before rising and slipping the case strap over his shoulder. Without a word he turned heading back toward the fort, to lick his wounds so to speak and put as much distance between himself and the woman before he carried through with the urge to simply shoot her.“Hmmmm. Fate.” WoodWhisp whispered the words thoughtfully, “I’ve never put much stock in fate, things happen and one merely has to sink or swim.” WoodWhisp said casually, smiling over at Twilight as she was lost in thought. He could feel something more to her than the words she chose to share with him, but he wouldn’t press. Not now anyway. This would be so much easier on him if he could read her like he could read Calla. Not that reading Calla was much like reading any other woman, considering even she would sometimes mentally refer to herself as a ‘Guy with boobs and PMS’ on occasion. Granted he knew full well this stemmed back to Calla’s first conquest, so far her first and only failure. Though right now Alister seemed to be proving difficult from the snippets of thoughts leaking into his mind. WoodWhisp shook his head slightly to remove his riders thoughts and emotions from his mind and returning his eyes to Twilight. Even WoodWhisp had to laugh at the joke slash insult the cunning female had just thrown at him. Part of him couldn’t believe someone of his size and ferocity had just been compared to such a small, harmless animal. “Ah but there is a difference.” WoodWhisp began, dramatically, “You see I haven’t been killed just yet, my dear.” The words were out before he could stop them. WoodWhisp quickly bit his tongue and hoped Twilight wouldn’t catch his little slip of the tongue. Who was he kidding he’d only known the female for barely a day there was no way she could feel like that about him. He had no right to call her that, she was Alister’s and no one else's. And Alister would never even begin to consider accepting WoodWhisp. He had no right to drag her away like this. WoodWhisp shook his head, slightly more violently this time, what was he thinking! He’d only brought her here to fulfill the promise he’d made the day they had met to show her his lake some time. Yeah, she was certainly pretty and there was just something about her that he couldn’t resist, but come on they were from two very different forts! And had only met just a few days ago at that! There was no chance.
“I don’t play games Alister. I win them.” Calla whispered her voice so low she doubted he even heard her. Though she didn’t particularly mind if he didn’t, she was more talking to herself as she spoke anyway. Her determination redoubled as he spoke again and then turned to walk away. She would never let this end like it had in the Academy, she would not allow another mark of failure on her already long running record. Calla stood and dusted the white sprinkling of snow from her dark red uniform, the spots where it had settled and melted were obvious but she simply ignored them, nothing she could do about it right now anyway. “So you aren’t the man you lead people on to believe.” Calla said, her voice just loud enough for him to still be able to hear her, “Certainly a bitter disappointment. Ah well I guess I'll have to go to someone better around this place, since I'm already here.” With a sigh Calla turned. She had already made a note of his shortening patience, and had structured the final blow to make it seem as if he were the least of her goals here in White Shadow, and that she had many others she could go to. She was sure Alister’s ego would cause him to turn around at this insult, he seemed to be a very prideful man and there was no doubt that this move was a retreat before she could cause more harm.
"You might not have been killed yet but~ I think you're just as harmless as one." Bouncing to her feet with a playful grin, Twilight stretched before bumping the other wolf lightly. She'd picked up on the slight addition but let it slide as a slip of the tongue. That was all it was...a mere slip of the tongue and nothing more. But what if it was? The thought almost made her hopeful before she quietly and sadly squashed it. There was no way, the other wolf would even entertain such thoughts. True he was an amusing companion but nothing more than that. Heaven's knew she didn't need to get her hopes up. It was never worth it. A hard lesson she'd learned over the years but a lesson nonetheless.
"Unless of course you can prove me wrong?" A playful challenge from the black femme as she shook the snow from her back, tail wagging and swaying behind her. This would be a test to her theory. If WoodWhisp was like most of the males she knew...he'd jump at that invitation to a challenge, after all...that was how the male brain worked...or at least all the males she knew. Like Alister for instance...she could feel the annoyance and near homicidal nature of his thoughts but she calmly pushed them away. When she got back to the fort...she'd deal with picking up the pieces of the poor soul that managed to annoy the man. For now...her gold and green eyes fixed on WoodWhisp..she was going to have her a bit of fun. There was a slight twitch of his shoulder as he drew to stop, Calla's words running through his head once, and then twice. There was no warning for the next motion as he slipped the pistol from its holster, a turn on the heel before the tree near Calla met a bullet from his gun. A warning shot, a very very clear warning that he was at the end of his patience with the woman. There wasn't a need for words to be honest. The woman had purposely insulted him..over and over so a reaction was only expected. A response like this...was left up for debate of course."You might not have been killed yet but~ I think you're just as harmless as one." The woman had purposely insulted him..over and over so a reaction was only expected. A response like this...was left up for debate of course.WoodWhisp bumped her back, his shoulder twitching at the contact, but WoodWhisp quickly shot down the hopeful thoughts running through his mind. No, he didn’t want to scare her away; he didn’t want to make her hate him. That would completely ruin his chances after all. Instead he forced his eyes away from her, turning his attention to the glittering ice crystals beneath his paws. He didn’t know how much long he could go without saying something stupid and driving her away, he really didn’t want to do that. Lost in his meandering thoughts he barely heard the playful insult Twilight threw at him, busy trying to figure out he could get out of this situation before he humiliated himself. He managed to bring himself back in time to hear the challenge though. “For a beautiful femme like yourself Twilight? Anything.” WoodWhisp said, the words coming out before he really had a chance to think of what he was saying. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. There went his pride, he could feel it slipping away from him, mocking him as it went. He could feel the impending humiliation, the most likely anger that she would unleash upon him. There went his chances of ever being close to her, learning more about her, laughing as it went. WoodWhisp immediately looked away, as if something in the trees on the other side of the lake had caught his attention, “Err, I mean…” If a wolf could blush he'd be as red as a tomato and he knew it. But he couldn’t think of a way to take back what he had said without flat out lying, and he could never lie to Twilight.
Calla laughed as the bullet struck the tree beside her. Oh yes, the cards were beginning to play in her favor indeed. Barely a second had passed before she had her own two pistols out, pointed evenly at Alister. Calla was more proud of her pistols then she was of anything else in her possession, other than WoodWhisp. Though technically she didn’t own the wolf. They were both recently cleaned and always fully loaded. The one in her right hand had a sun and moon etched into it and was obviously newer than the other, Simile had been good to her but she hadn’t had him as long as her other. The one in her left hand was clean and shinning, though obviously more worn and used. Etched into it was a rose and a feather, Metaphor was her reliable companion. “So it’s a firefight you want boy?” She said, her tone was mocking, goading his damaged ego further, “Then let’s dance.” Along with her words she squeezed the trigger of each gun, the bullets whizzing past on either side of Alister’s head, a warning shot of her own. Her baby’s weren’t just for show, though she had paid a lot to have them engraved.
The threads of amused playfulnes that had danced through her slipped for a moment as she stared at the other wolf confusion lancing through her mismatched eyes. Had he just...? The question lingered in her mind as she stood there with nothing better to do than stare. No, her ears had to be deceiving her...right? Dipping her muzzle slighty, her ears pricked forward catching the attempt by WoodWhisp to try and take back what he'd said. The moment her brain fully processed the information though her ears drooped, maybe this had been a bad idea after all. Maybe if she'd stayed back at the fort and dealt with Alister and his moodswings she wouldn't be standing here on the edge of a chasm that could very well shatter her completely. There was irritation, a steady seething irritation that was quickly turning into a biting sort of anger. Though he bit back most of the urge to pull the trigger again shoot the woman in her leg or shoulder, at least then he wouldn't be staring down the shafts of two guns. There was no helping the irritation, but he'd be damned if he got shot. "Don't start something you can't finish." Keeping his voice low, he gave a slightly lazy, almost feline roll of his shoulders as he began to circle slowly. Did he doubt that she would shoot him given the incentive? No he didn't but that didn't mean he wouldn't retaliate.WoodWhisp felt a ping of pain as Twilight’s ears drooped, and he hated himself for causing that. WoodWhisp stuck his nose in the snow sadly, what had he gone and done? Of course she didn’t feel like that about him? How could he even say that! Now he’d gone and caused her distress, what kind of male was he! “Oh Twilight! Now look what I’ve gone and done!” He said, orange eye’s looking up at her sadly, that last mild shred of hope that she might like him dissolved, “I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. It was far to bold of me.” He said, shaking his head, despite his best efforts a slight taint of bitterness entered his voice. “But I just can’t lie to you Twilight.” He added on quietly, realizing again that this was far to bold of a statement. Twilight would probably storm away from him in anger or fear, she would hate him for this. She was probably regretting even coming with him now that he had made such a thoughtless comment! Why couldn’t he ever keep his emotions in check! They were from completely different forts, they had barely known each other, what had he been thinking! He hadn’t, that was the problem. He’d let his emotions rule over his logic and look at where it had gotten him. The only femme he had ever really liked now probably hated him and regretted even meeting him! Oh gods he hoped Calla would never find out about this, she would mock him mercilessly for being shot down by his own stupidity.
Calla kept her guns pointed squarely at Alister, turning easily in place as he moved around her. “You should take your own advice Alister. You may have started this but I really don’t want to finish it.” Calla said evenly, her tone giving away nothing, her eyes staring directly into Alister’s, giving nothing away as to her next move. True Centipedes weren’t as smart as humans, but Alister was enraged at this point, it wouldn’t be a hard fight if that’s what it came to. Though her chances might increase if it did come to a fight she really didn’t want to have to actually harm the man, it was never as much fun with the injured. And the way Alister was moving, it would be very much fun indeed, all she had to do was to play her cards right from here and everything would end in her favor. “Ali, Ali, Ali. Turning a loaded weapon on an innocent woman isn’t very nice. I mean it’s hardly my fault you can’t act as big as you talk.” She said nonchalant, disappointment carefully nestled into her tone.
Shaking her head rapidly the black female gave a brief distressed cry slipping to the ground and slipping her paws over her muzzle. No, no, no. This couldn't be happening, she was hearing one thing but her mind was telling her something completely different. Flee little wolf...run away and hide with your human, you're useless anyway. A distant memory, a memory she'd rather keep buried, just like the wolf that had taunted her with the words. Dead, buried and gone not plaguing her like this.
Whimpering, she shook her head before dragging herself to her feet eyes downcast. "I-it's not you..." Swallowing she began to back away slowly, tail down. "I-I just need to...to go.." Shaking she stumbled backward heading back toward the shore intent on fleeing and heading back to the fort to hide. No...not the fort, at least not where Alister could find her. He was annoyed enough as it was from what she could sense. Somewhere else then, somewhere no one would find her at least not until she wanted them to. "An innocent woman? I'm pretty sure I'm not looking at one." Eyes narrowing there was a dangerous cast to his voice and gaze as he settled himself in front of Calla "I don't suppose there's anyone left in New Eve that would even dream of dealing with you is there? Demanding, insulting and still expecting one to bend to your will...all for a romp. If it weren't for something I did I might actually be tempted to shoot you, or rather more tempted." Annoyed but not stupid. WoodWhisp’s calm exterior collapsed around him as Twilight said she should leave. “Twilight! Please no, please don’t go just yet!” He pleaded hopelessness and humiliation much more evident in his voice now, “I can keep myself in check, I promise!” He said quietly, his head low as he looked pleading up at Twilight. Damn it why was he so stupid! Why had he said that! Now he really had let her slip away. He had gone and scared her off already without having a chance to say anything more than Hi! A soft whimper escaped his throat as he forced himself to bring his head up and look Twilight in the eye. “I can’t let us part like this Twilight. You probably hate me now.” WoodWhisp said, shaking his head, “Of course you wouldn’t feel like that, I don’t know what I was thinking.” He said, angry and irritated at himself now for driving her away like this, “Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!” He hissed at himself, knocking his nose against the ice with each word. He couldn’t believe he’d already gone and driven off the only femme to ever truly catch his attention! What had gotten in to him! Why had he said something as stupid and foolish and overly bold as that! ‘Because you barely know her and you already love her.’ One of the voices whispered in the back of his head, pointing out the obvious. WoodWhisp hissed at it mentally before turning back to Twilight. “Please.” A half whispered, half whimpered final plead for her to stay.
“To be honest with you Alister,” Calla said, refusing to fall into his trap like that, “No one I haven’t grown bored with.” She said with a sigh, “And no one quite as…attractive as you, for lack of a better name for it.” She added, her gaze never moving from his eyes. Ah ha, this was certainly an entertaining challenge. It was much easier to keep an even gaze on him when he had stopped moving, much easier to keep her voice even when she wasn’t moving. Oh how much effort it was taking to try and keep from bursting out laughing. In Calla’s eyes this whole show-down wasn’t just about her own fun anymore, it was a game. And when it came to games Calla got very, very competitive, she was going to go to any lengths to end this nice little show down, no matter what cards she would have to play. Flattery, Anger, Jealousy, every card was in her deck, just waiting for the right moment to strike the killing blow.
Another step backward and she swallowed something in her felt like it was breaking...steadily falling to pieces but then...something else felt like the pieces were slidding together, fragile and shaky but whole. The whole thing made her feel helpless, so very helpless... But his words...they made her stop in her retreat for few moments. He was pleading with her..pleading with her to stay but even so...she wanted to trust him...she really did, something in her was stopping her though, stopping her from trusting someone other than her generally demented rider.
"I don't...I don't hate you." Voice soft, ears still drooping the black wolf let out a shuddering breath and shook her head. "I...don't think I could ever hate you to be honest..." a risky statement but a true one. She didn't know if she had the heart to hate the male unless he managed to do something that truely pissed her off. Even then, she didn't think she'd be able to hate him. A bitter chuckle that soon blossomed into a humorless little laugh. This was all a game, a dangerous dangerous little game that they would both tire of quickly. Another conquest for Calla and a brief amount of amusement for him and all things considered it would no doubt turn out to be a dull little game that he'd regretting going through with in the long run. "Don't play with me Calla...and most of all don't even try to flatter me...it won't get you anywhere." A petty dangerous little game that wouldn't benefit either of them. WoodWhisp froze in his angry tirade against himself as he heard Twilights quiet, whispered words. “Y-you don’t hate me?” He asked, his ears pricking up at this thought, after what he had said, after what he had implied, after he had terrified her like that! And she didn’t hate him! WoodWhisp moved to nuzzle her, but stopped himself. No, he didn’t want to startle her any further than he already had, and a movement like that would probably scare her away for good. That was the last thing he wanted. After all! She didn’t hate him! She didn’t hate him and he still had a chance! Instead he settled for smiling at her gently, orange eyes locking with her amber and green ones. And something inside him slipped out of his control. “I’m so glad you don’t hate me Twilight. And I must say you are very beautiful, no one could deny that.” He said, his tone still soft and gentle, though his façade had shattered and he still felt exposed. What are you doing you idiot! You’re going to scare her away again! Get control of yourself. But WoodWhisp couldn’t stop himself, the words came out of his mouth before he had a chance to stop them, something in the beautiful female’s eyes had made him lose all control over his mouth it seemed. “I love…” NO! NO YOU’LL RUIN IT! YOU’LL SCARE HER AWAY! He screamed in his head, but he couldn’t stop himself his mouth seemed to have developed a mind of its own suddenly. “I mean, I think I love you Twilight.” YOU WORTHLESS RETARD! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING! HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT! Because I can’t lie to her. YOU’RE GOING TO SCARE HER AWAY! I can’t lie to her; I can’t hide things from her. IS THAT WORTH LOSING HER! Maybe….maybe she’ll understand… WoodWhisp battled with himself mentally, switching between defending himself and yelling at himself for screwing this up. What had he done? Why hadn’t he been able to keep himself under control as he had promised her?
Calla snorted as he laughed still calm and steady. “It’s not flattery Alister. Flattery is lying and I don’t lie.” Calla said evenly. It was true, Calla had a hard time lying to people, though it was only part true that she considered Flattery to lying. In all it really depended on what was being complimented and she hadn’t been lying to Alister. “I simply chose that word because I cannot think of the word that explains what about you has brought me here.” She explained, still keeping her brown eyes evenly trained on his. Her guns didn’t move at all, she would keep herself well defended until she was sure that he had been properly disarmed. After all, once a man had been disarmed once it was much, much easier to do so again in the future. It was only the first little game that was the most difficult to win. And especially with Alister, this was turning into quite the competition. Vaguely Calla wondered how long it would take for the gunshots to attract the attention of someone, then realized that was very unlikely. This was a WolfRider’s fort and gunshots were most likely very normal.
A quiet shake of the head as the black female gave a slight, hesitant smile and her tail swayed with the faint hints of a wag. "How can I hate you...when you're so nice to me even though we just met?" Just met in a fairly true sense considering they'd barely known each other for more than a few days. The streaks of happiness that the topic had begun to shift slightly were gone at the male's next words to which she merely gave a bitter laugh lifting her head to stare at WoodWhisp.
"Don't say things you don't mean after all...how can you love someone you barely know?" Bitter words, spoken softly, far too softly for even the femme when she was in this state. "You could have any wolf you want...you don't need some...thing...like me." Stepping lightly she began to pace a short circuit in the snow. "A dark little thing like me...last to bond, first to have a brush with death...eternal stuck with White Shadow's possibly most hated rider. Oh no...you don't need someone like me at all." The words were flowing unchecked and uncaring even as a small little voice told her that WoodWhisp didn't deserve this that he was faultless.
Oh no...her dual colored gaze darkened as she swung around. There was no such thing as a faultless creature. No one was faultless, human or wolf, but that didn't matter did it? No...only the level of the fault mattered. And her's seemed to be of the highest order. The only streak of darkness among the light, the only one who had been willing to even spare Alister more than a passing glance. Darkness called to darkness...always had and always would. "The basis of lying and flattery are two completely different things but they're the same if one cares to think hard enough about it." Keeping his back to the wall, he let out a breath seeing it rise before him in a cloud of vapor. How many people had he lured into little games such as this one? A few honeyed words, a slight allowance for misplaced trust and weeks, days or even hours later when his amusement waned a few well aimed warning shots ended that game. It was always the same and even now he knew better than to even think it'd get old. Humans were trusting things, emotional things which was why he'd removed himself from that altogether, kept his emotions in check and never trusted anymore besides his wolf. All for the amusement of a little game, and all for the amusement of seeing others flee at the realization that he truly was as heartless as everyone thought. "There's no need to find a word to describe anything. You needed a romp and a source of amusement as well as a challenge and you came back to add me to your list of amusements. Its as simple as that."WoodWhisp’s smiled warmly as Twilight seemed to cheer up. But all of that promptly changed as her harsh words began. WoodWhisp’s felt horribly, he had angered her, he had caused her to remember things she had not wished too. He had brought her grief, confusion, anger, all in the brief course of their meeting here. What had he been thinking? He should never had suggested this! He was a horrible male and a horrible wolf! “Twilight! Twilight please don’t speak of yourself like that!” He whispered, his body was close to the ground, his tail hung low and limp, his orange eye’s looked up at Twilight pleadingly. “Twilight I say exactly what I mean. I love you.” He whispered, so long as the words were already out there he might as well stand by them. Should he try to take that back it would obviously be lying, and he couldn’t lie to her. “None of that, none of it means anything to me.” His tone was firm as he said this, “I myself was the last to bond, stumbling out of the cave only after my mother came back in when she noticed I was missing.” WoodWhisp argued determinedly, “Calla isn’t exactly loved, the way she shoots at her packmates and bosses people about. In my ten years I’ve been demoted to Omega more times than I can count.” Another point down, determined to counteract her he continued. “Twilight these kinds of things happen to everyone. The point is I want to be there for them. I want to protect you from them the best I can. It’s not that I don’t need you Twilight, It’s that I need no one but you.” WoodWhisp finished, forcing himself to look Twilight in the eye as warmly, as gently as he could. This was his vow, should Twilight deny him this he knew there would be no female after him to sooth the wound. Twilight would be the last attempt he would ever make, the only attempt he had ever truly been compelled to make.
“Believe what you want Alister. The point is I’m here versus anywhere else.” Calla said with a minor shrug. It was true, she could be on patrol right now, or practicing hand to hand combat. Or even setting aside some time to head into The City, visit a bookstore. That was one of the things she missed greatly about her Academy days, being able to read so much. Aside from Him she had been the quiet girl in the back of the class, nose in a book and very rarely actually paying attention. She was the one who was always caught with a book inside of another. Avoiding homework and losing herself in a fantasy world. She had often spent time fantasizing about her past. But that had changed when she turned eighteen. When He had shot her down. She gave up on the past, gave up on fairytale romances and Happily Ever After. The future was all that mattered; she threw herself into her apprenticeship and forgot everything. She would toy with men, but never anything more than that. “Look Ali, you get to unleash some stress, I get some amusement. Everybody wins.” Calla said with an almost seductive tone, “Now how about we stop this silly charade?” A soft snort as the female turned retracing her steps in the snow, a faint track already being driven into the packed snow. Anger and fear rode her at once prickling and poking her with needles until the only thing she could think to do was pace and rage. Pace and rage...pace and rage and try not to lash out at the lighter male.
"Protect me...Dare I ask...can you protect me from yourself or myself for that matter?" Looking at the pleading male she slowed before stopping tail down. There was an uneasy cast to her stance, one that left her swaying in the gentle breeze that danced across the lake. Could anyone protect her from herself? No...she was sure of that much. There was no humor in the smile that crossed his face as he lowered the gun ever so slightly. There would be no escape from this fate, his attempt at solitude had been ruined and any further attempts would be ruined at least for the day...which left him with one final option considering he wasn't going to shoot the woman no matter how much it tempted him. Take her up on the offer and be done with it.
The offer seemed to be a fair enough trade really, granted he'd already sacrificed a chance at escape which meant he didn't have that much of a choice but to give in now and remain uninjured. "Fine then. After this I do hope I'll be allowed to have my solitude..." A final roll of his shoulders as he slid the pistol back into its holster still keeping an eye on Calla and most importantly those guns. True he'd been shot several times before...but that didn't mean he wanted to get shot right now. A trip to the medic's quarters was not on his list of things to do for the day.WoodWhisp knew this would get him killed, knew it would anger her even more, but he didn’t know what else to do. WoodWhisp moved forward from his nest. Slowly inching closer to her, keeping the fear of her wrath, of her rejection, out of his expression and out of his tone. Quickly he stood in front of her, doing everything within his power to keep his breathing even, to keep her scent from distracting him. Gently he laid his head on her shoulder and whispered; “I can try Twilight.” It took every bit of his self restraint not to inhale as deeply as he could, realizing this could easily be the last time he would ever get to be this close to her, “I can do everything within and beyond my power to try. I promise you this.” His voice was beginning to shake slightly as he spoke, but still he forced out his fear. He would not let her see how scared he was that she would hate him for this. He was less worried about his own physical well being than he was about causing her more grief and pain than he already had. He knew this would be his only chance, but he didn’t want to push her, he could only promise her. Anything, everything, he would do his best.
Calla sensed his resignation before she saw it, before she heard it. With a shout of triumph in her mind she slid the guns back into their proper homes. She was already crossing the space between them. She had known she would win, the minute he turned down her offered escape she had won. It had all been a matter of time and patience before he realized it was hopeless. She had even been willing to release him free of damage and he had refused, again after wounding his pride, he had refused. The battle was hers and with a smile she slid her arm around her new toy, despite the difference in height. “See now Ali, was that really so hard?” She whispered, her voice having lost all the mocking sarcasm it had held only moments before, reverting back to her more normal tone. Which in all actuality wasn’t that different, but she liked to think it was anyway. “Now Ali, since I don’t spend much time around here I’m afraid I don’t know the way. Why don’t you lead?” Though her voice was soft and sweet it was not a question, it wasn’t even a suggestion, it was a command.
Twilight's lithe form tensed and to even the unknowing passerby it was clear the female was set to bolt. The anger was still there, but it was quickly being strangled by fear. A slightly mind numbing fear that had her shaking well after WoodWhisp had finished speaking. A final plea...a pledge...a vow. The depth of it all shook her to the core and it was all she could do to stop herself from sinking to the snow covered ice. How could she have been so oblivious? So...stupid? The fine trembling was taking on a fever pitch, and she whimpered words failing her now. Why hadn't she seen it before it had gotten this far?
There was a slight twitch of annoyance and briefly he seriously contemplated taking his gun and shooting the woman, if only for the brief relief he would have from not having to deal with her attached to him like this. "Why yes it was..and I'd appreciate it if you didn't call me that." Or touch me for that matter. he added mentally not at all liking the look of the situation. Maybe he should have taken that trip to the medic...at least it wouldn't involve him being in such a position as this.
A soft snort was his only reply to the 'request' as he shrugged her arm off and started off into the fort. He was really beginning to regret this course of action already.WoodWhisp breathed as shallow as he could, patiently waiting. He didn’t move, he barely breathed, but inside him his heart was roaring quick with adrenaline. He did everything he could to keep steady but still he shook slightly. Mentally he pleaded, begged, and whimpered for her to accept, for her take his promise. But he prevented himself from saying a word. No, it was obvious she was trying to think, and he would not interrupt her. He had caused her grief enough already, he would not also push upon her a choice she didn’t want to make. He would wait patiently, head rested lightly on her shoulders, for her decision, for her words. Working with Calla had given him patience, and it took every one of those ten years now not to do something rash, not to act on impulse. That was what had gotten him into this situation, the decision to go to White Shadow, to bring her here, to speak those words. Finally he couldn’t keep quiet anymore; “Twilight.” The name was barely a whisper, a warm, gentle tone, an attempt to comfort her, to quiet her confused, fearful whimpering. As he had said, he would do everything within and beyond his power to protect her.
Calla didn’t respond at first, sensing his regret. She would just have to change that was all. She was unaffected as he removed her arm and set out. Calla moved quickly, easily keeping pace with him despite her shorter stature. Arms stretched behind her head Calla kept on eye on where she was going and the other on Alister beside her. Why had she come here? She still had that one guy from New Eve, but as of today that was indeed over. There was nothing memorable about him anyway, at least Alister was more of a challenge, and she could tell already that every time after would be almost as difficult and entertaining as today had been. But he would give in, he already had. He had turned away her escape opportunity and was now her new Toy by his own choice. So it was a bit of a trip to get here, it would be entertaining none-the-less. “I’m not THAT bad.” Calla said after a few moments of considering him. Yes, it would be worth it. She would make it worth it.
"I'm sorry... The words came out as a soft sobbing whisper and Twilight lowered her head, her tail tugging neatly between her legs. What a fool she'd been, a self absorbed, selfish little fool! She should have seen it from before, should have realized something was amiss before she let herself sink into that dark little hole. The wolf that had tainted her thoughts with such lies was long dead, there was no trace of him to be found. Gone, dead, he held no sway over her anymore. Yet even with all that knowledge she'd still fallen into the trap, still let herself sink into despair. "I'm sorry...for snapping at you..." Voice barely above a whisper she couldn't bear to look into the male's eyes. Not after she'd almost ripping him apart because of her own insecurities. Alister's resignation to his fate had been one born of pure weariness, though right now as he turned the situation over in his head there was nothing but a mixture of brief annoyance, regret and something else. That something else was what was puzzling him, considering he usually knew his own mind well enough, even with the constant intrusions from Twilight. Maybe it was the absence of the wolf's usual prodding that was puzzling him or maybe it was the simple realization that he really hadn't amused himself with anyone in quite a while. A situation which would be remedied quite soon. Fishing the keys for his room out of his pocket he opened the door sparing the woman a brief huff.
"Says you." was his only comment before he took a step back to allow Calla to enter. A brief amusement, nothing more, nothing less.

A response like this...was left up for debate of course."You might not have been killed yet but~ I think you're just as harmless as one." A response like this...was left up for debate of course.WoodWhisp bumped her back, his shoulder twitching at the contact, but WoodWhisp quickly shot down the hopeful thoughts running through his mind.

WoodWhisp ran his tongue gently over Twilight’s ear. “You have nothing to apologize for my dear,” He assured her, “It was my own foolishness that caused this.” He said gently. He truly hoped the black female would be willing to forgive him for all of this, that he had caused. And maybe, with any luck, she would accept him. But from what he had seen so far he was very nearly sure this would not happen, he didn’t deserve it considering the grief he had caused her. The least he could do was apologize, do anything she asked to make up for his blunder. WoodWhisp summoned every inch of his patience as he allowed her to compose himself, but failed to back away. The irrational fear that if he did move he would never get this close to her again, that if he moved away now she would simply disappear, as if this all had been a dream. He had forbidden himself to get his hopes up at every twist and turn of the conversation, but now, as he stood so close to her, his spirits were soaring. Maybe she would, maybe she could. Maybe maybe maybe, but enough years with Calla had taught him that Maybe’s didn’t mean anything, only facts and strategies. But here he couldn’t help himself, the Maybe’s and the What-If’s running wild through his mind. Maybe he wouldn’t have to be alone, maybe he would be able to spend his time beside her, doing the best he could to fulfill the promise he had made only moments before. A promise he was determined to keep if she would let him.
Twilight's ear twitched and she shivered unconsciously at the feel of the other wolf's tongue on her ear. A simple movement, that seemed to insignificant but it was enough to spur Twilight's mind into motion. Swallowing she lifted her head slowly ears still drooping slightly though she forced a small smile as she finally met WoodWhisp's gaze. Forgiveness had never been a topic that she'd fully understood but now, now it was starting to make sense. "I could've ripped you apart just now...and even after all that ranting...you still don't think I need to apologize..." she dipped her muzzle with a soft sigh and shook her head. "Foolishness...forgiveness...adoration...love...They're all the same thing sometimes aren't they?" her voice was soft and she tilted her head to one side as if considering something, the promise...an invitation to trust...something she didn't do often. Something she couldn't afford to do often but in this case...she was willing to make an exception. "That promise...you don't have to promise me anything more than what you're capable of...I'll ask for nothing more and nothing less...Just...don't betray me." Her voice was still soft, still barely above a whisper but the last words held an edge, a clear warning. Don't betray me...if you do...you won't live to regret it.WoodWhisp smiled in response as Twilight came up to look him in the eye. He was glad he had been able to calm her down, been able to comfort her. He wasn’t sure what it was that seemed to torment her, but he would not ask. She would tell him in time, he would not press the matter now. “No, Twilight.” WoodWhisp replied, “You don’t have anything to apologize for. It is my fault for causing you grief.” WoodWhisp insisted, because it was. He had been the catalyst that had started all of this. He had brought her here, he had been unable to keep his own tongue in check. He would not let her take the blame for this, because he had caused it and he knew it. “And anyway, I doubt you would have ripped me apart.” He added, his tone lighter, more joking now. He would at least try to cheer her up, though part of him had given up hope that she would accept his promise. But she wasn’t angry at him anymore, that was a step in the right direction. Maybe one day she would come to accept him, maybe he could prove to her that he was very serious about protecting her, even from Alister if he had to. The foul tempered male did not scare him as much if it meant protecting Twilight in the process. And then he heard them, those words that didn’t want to sink in at first. The words that sent his entire being soaring. It took a moment, for them to properly sink in, but when they had he let out a yip and moved towards her. Tail wagging happily behind him he rested his head on her shoulder. “I would never be able to do that Twilight.” He promised, catching the edge in her words, but they were not enough to dampen his joy, “I will do everything I can for you.” He restated his words, as if to reassure her that his words were true, that they would never change.
A soft almost purring growl sounded from Twilight's throat and she gave a grin hearing the challenge. "Oh? Care to test that theory?" Tail wagging she tilted her head, catching one of his ears between her jaws and tugging on it lightly, playfully she growled and pawed at him. There was no malice in the growls, merely playful amusement as her tail swayed behind her. Releasing his ear long enough to flash a grin at him, she pounced on him with a light laugh. "Well then~ My first request is that you amuse me." she said paws resting lightly on his shoulders. The sudden shift in the female's mood would have scared anyone, anyone in their right mind that is. But Twilight could care less right now.

The clouds above were gathering darkly as Calla stood at the gate of White Shadow, the smell of rain was in the air. Even the birds were quiet, hiding away from the coming storm. The wind was gentle now, but was certainly beginning to pick up force, pushing Calla’s hair back to reveal her brown eyes, staring forward in a dull manner. The woman noticed none of this, of course, there were far too many things running through her mind. Or rather there was nothing running through her mind, she had forced it all aside, forced herself not to think about it. Staring forward, eyes not focused on anything in particular, a grim look on her face as if she stared down death. Oblivious to the wind, the clouds, the rustling of trees, the people bustling through the fort, or even the fact that WoodWhisp was no longer beside her. A distant roll of thunder reached ears, summoning back Calla’s thoughts. She crunched the numbers again. It had been one month since she had first “Visited” Alister. For two weeks she would come and bother him almost as frequently as ever other day. And then, she had stopped, mildly worried. Another two weeks passed, maybe she was late? No, she had never been late a day in her life. So could it be? No that was impossible, she was a WolfRider! Not to mention it was a very rare thing, and she had gone through various toys for years and it had never happened. So why now? Why Alister Shields? Another distant roll of thunder, and Calla forced all these thoughts from her mind. It took a great amount of will, an amount she didn’t really have right now, to step forward, to walk into the fort. It wasn’t her usual confident stride; it was obvious she was postponing something. She moved through the fort, blind eyes not really looking for him. In all actuality she was half hoping she wouldn’t find him. She wasn’t sure why she was scared, why the thought of being anywhere near Alister right now scared her. And beneath that, that was an anger rolling slowly, waiting for it’s chance to surface, to roar it’s head and lash out.
The minute Calla had slid from his back WoodWhisp had moved into the fort, his nose futilely trying to find Twilight’s sent in the muddled mess of scents in the fort. He called out her name as he went, searching her out. Panic coursed through him, pushing him ever onward, seeking her out. This was bad, this was very very bad. And the worst part was that Calla didn’t even know why it was bad, but WoodWhisp did. And even now WoodWhisp would not tell her, he would take that secret to his grave. He needed to find Twilight, he needed to tell her, he would need her help if they were to keep this whole thing under control. God he almost hoped Alister wasn’t in the fort right now; it would probably be better if he wasn’t, probably end so much better. Maybe, maybe Calla would change her mind, decide to go home and never come here to see him again. That would be good, that would be very good. But that wasn’t going to happen; she had already applied for the Transfer. She had every intention of telling him even though the very notion terrified her. Damn it where was Twilight!
Winter was a wonderful thing, most of the time. Winter meant they could all relax without the threat of being called out to stem an assault by centipedes. Winter however, was not a wonderful time when it was threatening to rain and rain hard. Which was why Alister found himself confined to the very edge of the training field watching Twilight as she bolted across the field chasing some poor hapless apprentice and their bonded. What the apprentince and pup done to annoy the ebony female, he had no idea. Had they even done anything to aggravate Twilight? That question was still very much up in the air. What was clear was, the apprentice was going to get some exercise whether or not he wanted it.
A clap of thunder sounded over head, and he glanced up watching the lightning dancing through the dark clouds. What foul weather. He was actually considering the comfort of his room, which was beginning to sound like a very good idea as the wind howled through the forest and across the training grounds causing the unfortunate apprentice to stumble and come very close to getting nipped from Twilight.
Shaking his head he turned heading back into the building. When you're done terrorizing that boy you can find me in my room, if you're so inclined to join me. With that he began to make his way back to his room to rummage through his collection of books. How dare that little insolent RUNT?!
Twilight's mismatched gaze darkened and she snapped at the apprentice's heels, growling when the pup turned to try and advert her from its rider. Such tactics were in vain however, as the ebony female snapped at the pup too herding it away from the apprentice for a while before resuming her 'hunt' for the wretched little thing. Insolent, wretched, little brat. Lips curling back in a snarl, she lounged at the boy delighting in his squeal of surprise and fear as she almost pulled him down. Of course such screams were being drowned out by the thunder, not that it mattered to her if anyone heard him.
Changing direction as the wind picked up causing the apprentice to stumble, Twilight gave a savage grin lengthening her stride. Just a few more feet and she'd have him. Just a few more feet. Muscles bunching she leapt dragging the shrieking boy down with her, fangs gleaming she made quick work of one sleeve and half the boy's pants, even as the pup circled and yowled trying to distract her. Oh she wouldn't kill him...oh no...she'd never go as far as that. She was going to make certain he knew better than to mess with her again.
One black clawed paw resting on the unconscious boy's chest, Twilight lifted her head, ears perked up and tail swaying. Cocking her head to one side as she listened to Alister's words, she gave a faint grin abandoning her 'prey'. Stalking past the wolf pup she bared her fangs just enough in a wicked grin before trotting off after her rider or rather in his general direction. A familiar scent was on the wind and she intended on finding out just why the wolf was here.Though her pace was slow Calla soon found herself almost halfway across the fort. Thunder rolled overhead again, her senses immediately focused on the noise, subconsciously she knew she was only postponing the inevitable, but at the same time she had no desire to stop doing so. One word, one question constantly running through her mind, mocking her. Why? Why? Why? Why didn’t she see this coming? Why didn’t she stop it? Why had she been so attracted to him of all people? Calla forcefully shook these thoughts from her head as the thunder rolled away and faded, only to be replaced by another familiar noise. A stride she would know from a mile away, a stride she shouldn't know, footsteps that could be associated with only one person, Alister Shields. Inexplicable fear welled up in her, tainted with anger and the need to protect. Instinct kicked in and within seconds she had turned and pulled her guns, sure enough not far away there was Alister, coming ever closer, though it didn’t seem as though he had noticed her yet. To make her point she cocked the guns, pulling back the hammers slowly, meticulously, reveling in the loud click they emitted as they settled into place. It took all of her self-restraint and a bit of soothing from WoodWhisp to prevent her from pulling the trigger then and there, before he even had a chance to defend himself. He was bad, and she knew that he could only get worse from here. Nothing good could come from this situation and she knew it full well, she should just kill him now. But she couldn’t, he deserved to know before she was forced to shove him out of her life, she had to protect it above all else, especially from him.
WoodWhisp had paused at the edge of the field, his thoughts becoming jumbled as he watched Twilight run. And then humor surged and he couldn’t help but start laughing as she tormented the recruit and his pup, his panic and worry forgotten now. It wasn’t until she started coming back in his direction and his laughter had died down that he properly remembered why he had been in such a rush before. His panic and sense of dread came flooding back, preventing him from stopping to enjoy the scent of her brought to him briefly on the chaotic winds. “What did he…?” He started, before shaking the thought from his head and standing back up to rush to her side, “Not important, we have a big problem and…” He paused mid sentence, soothing Calla whom he had felt a surge of anger from, “And I’m going to need your help. Calla’s about to KILL Alister.” WoodWhisp explained, picking up his pace toward where their riders were, looking back over his shoulder to Twilight to make sure she was still behind him. “I know I promised to protect you, but I can’t do this on my own.” He whispered before turning his attention back towards the front, he could see Calla, her stance stiff and her guns drawn, and redoubled his pace.
If anyone had told him he was going to be on the business end of two guns earlier, he would have called them mad. As it stood however the warning clicks were the only thing that dragged him from his stupor. His first instinct was to turn gun in hand and aimed in the direction of the offending person. However as soon as he caught sight of just who it was, his arm lowered slightly but not fully.
A slight quirk of one eyebrow was the only question asked even as the hair on the back of his neck stood on end. Something was off about this whole situation. And that something was more than enough to make him weary. Well more weary than he usually was around Calla anyway. Something was seriously off...instinct or self preservation he didn't know which had him taking a cautious step back. A slight tilt of Twilight's head was all she could manage as she listened to the other wolf before her ears titled back and her tail gave a slightly irritable twitch. "Dare I ask just why she wants to kill him this time?" There was worry lancing her words as she trailed WoodWhisp. Ever since Calla had started turning up on a regular basis, it had become a custom for fire fights to break out between the two riders. But this...this was different.
Giving a slight growl Twilight slipped between the two humans settling herself in front of Alister. True she never agreed fully with most of the things he did but if anyone was going to get a chance at killing him it would be her.
"Tell her to stand down WoodWhisp." Head lowered Twilight ignored the question from her rider instead keeping her gaze and attention on Calla. Alister she could deal with, Calla was something of a mystery to her.Instinct kicked in as Alister finally noticed her and drew his own gun. Calla’s vision focused solely on Alister, solely on the raised gun she now stared down. It didn’t matter that it had fallen slightly, and she didn’t even notice Twilight stand between them. All that mattered was that he intended to kill her, intended to kill it. She had been right all along, he could not be trusted any more than anyone else, she would have to take him out in the end. A man such as him didn’t deserve to live, and it was with this train of thought that she pulled the triggers, not even pausing to take her usually meticulous aim, and prepped the guns for another shot. Anger had welled up inside her now, double-bladed with her instincts and laced with her fear she lashed out. Her mind a frenzy of chaos, unable to be reached by even WoodWhisp. All she could think was that she had to protect it, she couldn’t let him anywhere near it or her. Alister was bad, he could only cause harm and pain and suffering and she had to put a stop to all that. She had to put a stop to him, and that meant putting a stop to his existence. Calla fired another shot, again failing to take her usual careful aim, waiting for his image to crumple before her so she could know it was safe, so she could know she had protected it.
“Because she has this thing about men and children.” WoodWhisp explained vaguely, though at the same time he wanted to be sure that she would understand. But as much as he loved Twilight, Calla was his Bonded and he had to protect her as well. If Twilight actually attacked he didn’t know how he would react, which he would defend. WoodWhisp couldn’t think about this now, when the time came to act he would, but if he thought about it he would only corrupt himself. Right now there were much more important things to worry about. “I-I don’t think I can do that Twilight. I can’t even get a good grasp on her mind, let alone get here to hear me.” WoodWhisp explained, his tone was almost pleading as Calla fired off her first shot, “She’s running on instinct. Please, stop and listen for a moment!” WoodWhisp insisted as another shot rang off. He knew he was going to make his argument fast, Twilight was just as attached to Alister as he was to Calla, though she was less likely to admit this fact. “You can’t tell Alister this, I never wanted to have to tell anyone this, but Calla’s past is one giant repressed memory.” WoodWhisp’s words were rushed, knowing at the rate Calla was going Twilight would have to attack, “She watched a man beat his son to death, that’s festered into a fear of men of any sort being anywhere near children. Alister is going to have to talk her out of this one!” WoodWhisp insisted, placing himself between Calla and Twilight as his rider fired off a third round of shots.
Another cautious step back avoiding the first shot carefully keeping a fair distance from the glowering black wolf. Whatever it was that had spurred this flurry of shots and apparently homicidal nature in the woman had managed to annoy Twilight as well. Twilight never got this riled up unless an apprentice wronged her and those times were few and far between. The second and third shots rang out clearly dragging him from his thoughts but a moment too late. One grazed his arm while the other lodged itself in his arm drawing a hiss from the man as the gun slipped from his grasp.
Taking a stumbling step back and grasping his injured arm Alister slid down to one knee even as Twilight circled around him to steady him. "Dammit all woman was that really necessary?" There was more than a hint of irritation in his voice as Alister kept his grip on his injured arm starring up at the woman over Twilight's shoulder.
Really, all the other times he'd been shot at he'd actually done something to deserve it, not this time however. He'd done nothing to deserve this sort of treatment. A brief flicker of confusion darted through his narrowed eyes but a slight shiver from Twilight drew his attention away for the briefest of moments. That lapse in attention however resulted in nothing remotely useful considering the black wolf was keeping any and all thoughts to herself. A growling, bristling barrier but beyond that he was on his own. Fur on end, Twilight gave a frustrated snarl staying silent as she bristled and growled keeping her lithe form between Alister and Calla. She really loved the other wolf, really loved him but her first loyalty had and would always be to Alister which might very well be the end of her one of these days.
"Talk her out of this one? Talk? I don't exactly think she's inclined to talking WoodWhisp." There was agitation there, and a building fear that only increased when the copper tang scent of blood hit her full force. Had it been anyone else, she would have already ripped them up. Had it been anyone else she wouldn't have been arguing with another wolf. But it wasn't anyone else she was staring down, it was someone who had earned her respect and for that she was well and truly confused.Calla watched him stumble and fall, and smiled. But still she didn’t put her guns down, something didn’t seem right just yet. And then she heard him speak and knew he wasn't dead, but at the same time it seemed harder to pull the trigger. Maybe it was the fact that she was saddened by the need to kill him. It was a necessary thing, a required thing if she wished to raise it in peace, but at the same time some part of her was saddened by it. She didn’t personally want him gone, but she had to protect it first, and that meant she would have to take him out. Protecting it was the most important thing right now, that was all she could think about, all that could run circles through her mind. He was pinned now, and she knew that. She took a deep breath, and this time paused to take careful aim. A quick shot to the head, a swift mostly painless death. Just because he had to die didn’t mean he had to suffer. She was more humane than that, no one deserved to suffer before they died. And maybe she could show him that the moment before he died. Maybe he would learn some lesson from it. No, no she doubted it. Men never learned, men existed only to cause harm and pain and she was doing a favor in taking out another of the foul species. She had to protect it, that was her first priority, it had to be her first priority. WoodWhisp had tried to talk her out of it, but what did he know? He was a man. But he had also proven himself to be loyal and trustworthy, he had proven to Twilight that she could trust him and Twilight was a logical thinker, Calla could respect that knowing that if WoodWhisp overstepped his boundaries Twilight would act appropriately. Alister on the other hand had not proven such, and thus Calla had never properly trusted him. No man ever could or ever would be able to prove themselves to be trustworthy. It was against their base natures. Carefully, slowly, Calla pulled back the hammer, her aim unfaltering.
WoodWhisp could feel the growing irritation from Twilight, and the overwhelming anger and fear from Calla. He made an attempt to contact her again, to get her to listen, but still he could not be heard above the confusion in her mind. But he could also feel it falter, for just a split second. She didn’t want to kill Alister, not completely. “It’s not that she’s disinclined.” WoodWhisp said, arranging his words carefully, but at the same time he had to speak quickly, Calla was taking aim for the kill shot, “It’s that she feels this is necessary! She doesn’t want to but she thinks it’s required.” WoodWhisp tried to explain, not sure if any of this was going to make sense to Twilight at all. After all, how could it make sense to anyone else if it didn’t even make sense to Calla? It only made sense to WoodWhisp because he knew the whole story, the whole story had eaten away at him for years! He had never thought it would turn into this though, he had thought he would never have to bring that up, that she could live her life in peace like she wanted. “She doesn’t understand why, Alister might be able to stop this.”
Tossing her head in irritation Twilight gave a growl of annoyance pacing to and fro in front of Alister trying her best to resist the urge to simply bite the woman. A quick n**, a short near fleeting sort of pain that might work to snap the woman out of it long enough for her to hear reason. That of course seemed highly unlike though considering just what she intended on doing. Lips curling back in a snarl she turned her attention and irritation on WoodWhisp. "And dear WoodWhisp, pray tell me just why she thinks this is required? And make the explanation short before I give into my instincts." Twilight was irritated and it was beginning to show. She'd felt the brush from Alister and had promptly shut him out.
It took a moment for him to realize fully just what the woman intended to do and in that moment Twilight crossed his field of vision obscuring his view of the woman who was intent on killing him. That realization however was more than enough to send a sliver of pure fear down his spine.
Death in general didn't scare him, death by centipede scared him even less, staring down the barrel of gun was a different story depending on who was holding the gun. True he'd been shot at before, shot before but to have someone aiming a gun at his head with every intent to truly kill him, that was a different story. Slowly and cautiously he eased back onto the ball of his heel. One wrong move and he'd be forced to try and dodge a shot to the head.
"Calla...care to explain why you intend to kill me?"At first his words didn’t sink into her whirling thoughts. She saw his mouth move but heard no words come from them, and she felt the brief bursts of fear leak into his emotions. She was barely a second away from pulling the trigger properly when his words sunk in. He didn’t know? How could he not know? He was a man, he had probably been planning this from the start! He was just postponing the inevitable, yes that was it. She should just pull the trigger, not allow him the pleasure of postponing this. But at the same time she felt a small amount of confusion from him, maybe he really didn’t know? No, that was impossible, he just didn’t want to die. He just didn’t want to have to admit to his plans and suffer the consequences as all men did. She shouldn’t answer him, she wouldn’t answer him, but at the same time she didn’t pull the trigger. She properly focused on him, staring him right in the eyes. Eyes that didn’t match, eyes that didn’t seem to belong. Thunder rumbled again as she opened her mouth to speak, each word didn’t even register in her mind, and as soon as it was said it was gone. “Because it is necessary. Life must pay for life.” Her voice blended with the thunder, raspy and monotone. As her words finished every fiber of being screamed at her to pull the trigger, but something held her back. Something she couldn’t explain prevented her from actually killing him right then like he deserved. A whispered question made itself heard in the hurricane of her mind, ‘Would he admit to his plans?’
WoodWhisp knew Twilight was at the end of her ropes, and he knew he had to do something. But he knew if Twilight attacked Calla she would shoot his beloved. That was why he had not interrupted her himself, anything that stood between Calla and Alister’s death would be shot and killed without second thought, without mercy. Calla held respect for Twilight, for anyone who had to deal with Alister so closely without killing him, but that wouldn’t stop her from shooting to kill. “She thinks it necessary because she believes that if left alive he will inflict nothing but pain and suffering on her and the child!” WoodWhisp explained, gods he hoped Twilight would understand, “Calla needs to admit this to him herself but…” WoodWhisp hesitated, could he trust Twilight not to inform Alister? He would have to, he needed her on his side if the two were to resolve this relatively peacefully, “But Calla is pregnant and feels Alister would only kill her and the child if left alive.” WoodWhisp explained, rushed, knowing this was probably a mistake. If Twilight told Alister it would make things worse, the minutes Calla felt Alister knew she would shoot, without second thought. Because that would confirm her belief that he had planned this. “Please, you can’t tell Alister. It will only make this worse.”
He'd barely heard her over the rumble of thunder, a thing that sounded more like the death toll for him. Life must pay for life. A simple answer, a simple answer that was supposed to mean something. Something that would determine whether he lived or died. He needed a chance to think a chance to figure out just what the woman seemed intent on killing him for. Of course such a chance wouldn't come. Calla was out for blood and with each rumble of thunder his time seemed to be growing shorter. "A life for a life..." The words themselves seemed so familiar but where had he heard them before...? Another crack of thunder sent a fine shiver down his spine and he paled visibly the answer finally coming to mind. A life for a life...it made perfect sense really. Shuddering he swallowed, realization finally dawning.
Whatever bits of anger and tension that had held Twilight on her feet was gone, and the wolf shook barely remaining on her feet. "Her....child....?" Voice shaking, Twilight swallowed once then twice before shaking her head to clear it and settle her thoughts. "Alister can be heartless, he can be a downright b*****d but..." Tail swaying her eyes narrowed as she turned an ever darkening gaze on WoodWhisp, "...he'd never do such a thing."Calla stared down at him, hatred and anger in her eyes. But still she was curious, the sense of dread she felt wash off of him. Yes, he knew, he had planned this! Every rumble of thunder were voices whispering for her to kill, every distant crack of thunder was the cue for her to pull the trigger. But still she refrained. Was he to coward to defend himself? Was he to coward to admit to his own plans? Of course he would, he a man, nothing but a coward. Pull the trigger But still her curiosity persisted, why had she been so attracted to him? She had known he was nothing but another man. Pull the trigger Had she really thought him better than that? After all their bouts and arguments? Pull the trigger Why him though? She had been through plenty of other men before and this had never happened to her. Why Alister? Why had this man managed to cause this when no one else had? Pull the trigger Calla resisted. She would hear him out at least, even though every fiber of her being wanted him dead, every inch of her screamed for her to pull the trigger and leave him for dead. It was what he deserved, she had to protect it. It was her duty now, it came before everything else. She had to protect it and that mean he had to die. Mean she had to pull the trigger and she had to pull the trigger soon before he could try to escape. Fine, she would give him a few seconds to speak, but if he tried to move she would pull the trigger then and there. That was her duty, that was what she had to do. Because if she didn’t he would cause only horrors and suffering beyond imagine. That was all men ever did.
WoodWhisp shuddered as Twilight turned that gaze on him. What had he caused? He had promised to protect her but all he ever seemed to bring her were more problems and pain! He couldn’t even uphold his promise to her, his promise to himself to protect Calla. He could feel it all crumbling down around him right now, right this moment. Calla’s past was rearing it’s head and he had delivered it straight to Twilight. “Please, Twilight, forgive me.” He whispered, bowing his head to her, “I know Alister wouldn’t. But Calla doesn’t, it’s instinct for her.” WoodWhisp explained, knowing it wouldn’t fix anything. If Calla shot Twilight would attack and he’d lose her. That thought frightened him more than anything, almost more than losing Calla. “Calla thinks this of all men, it’s not just Alister personally.” Still, Calla was his rider, and he found himself trying to redeem her in Twilight’s eyes, “It’s nothing against him personally. Her past still haunts her, though she doesn’t know it.”
That look in and of itself promised death, and the thought combined with the new knowledge of just why the woman wanted him dead made him pale further. Maybe death would be a good thing...a quick shot to the head to put him out of this misery...but no death would be the easy way out wouldn't it? An easy escape from responsibility. Shifting slightly he winced feeling the flow of blood from his shoulder resuming, another wound to add to his 'collection' as if he hadn't been shot enough times before.
"It makes sense doesn't it...? My life for a child's..." Eyes narrowing slightly as Alister regarded the woman he soon sighed shaking his head. "You didn't intend on telling me did you?" Of course she hadn't. She'd come with the intention of killing him, nothing more nothing less. Now even with this new found knowledge there was still no guarantee she wouldn't shoot him.
Another flick of her white tipped ebony tail and Twilight drew in a shuddering breath reminding herself not for the first time that WoodWhisp had done nothing to her, that he was blameless and didn't deserve her wrath. The one who had managed to drive her from confused to enraged in a heartbeat was also untouchable...untouchable so long as Alister was alive. The knowledge calmed her darker side and she tossed her head, gaze softening considerably though there seemed to be a hint of sadness there now. "The past haunts us all doesn't it?" Voice soft, her ears tilted back at another clap of thunder. "Thinking about it now...I can see just why she wants to kill him...but...you know where my loyalities lie."Yes, she had been right. He did know, he had just confirmed it. Just admitted it. And because he knew that meant he had planned it. He shifted, and her finger tightened on the trigger, he was going to move. He was going to make a run for it and she had to be ready. She couldn’t let him escape, she couldn’t let him live. She had to think of it, had to protect it. That was all she could do for now, all she had to do. He had intended this, for seen this. This chance to cause more misery and suffering in the world. But she was smarter than that, she knew what he was thinking and she was going to put a stop to it. She couldn’t let him go on with his plans, to hurt a child was despicable, he was unfit to live. And then his question fell on her ears. Anger swelled up again, lashing out at him. “You question my motives?” She hissed, “A heartless wretch as yourself has no right to.” It was obvious she meant every word she said, each one a knife to lash out at him. Yes, he deserved to suffer before he died, suffer over what he had caused, and over what he had been planning. A plan she would prevent. “One such as you had no right to know. Nor any of your kind.” She could be civil with him, prove to him that was possible before she killed him. She would answer his petty questions, play along with his little game. But then she would kill him, leave him for dead as she had to do.
WoodWhisp relaxed only slightly as Twilight calmed. He still had to be on guard, try to catch any warning of action in Calla’s thoughts before she could act. Try and put a stop to it, try to block it, something he would have to do something! He had to do it for Twilight, he had brought this down upon her when he had promised her to shield her from pain. It was the least he could do. “Her past. She can’t even remember it.” WoodWhisp whispered, questions he had mulled over countless nights, questions and nightmares that still would wake him from his slumber. “It haunts her none the less, and she doesn’t even know why.” WoodWhisp shook his head, that wasn’t Twilight’s problem. That was something he would have to work out on his own, he would never share that with anyone. “I understand Twilight. I want to stop this as much as you do, but I can’t.” He glanced between Calla and Alister before settling his gaze back on his mate, “I’m so sorry for bringing this to you, she gave me no choice.”
"A heartless wretch?" The question came out as a bitter laugh and Alister tossed his hair from his face turning darkened eyes on Calla. "And what does that make you? A blameless victim? Another innocent soul caught up in one of my games?" There was a soft snort followed by lazy tilt of his head as he calmly regarded the woman before him. To call him a heartless wretch...the notion itself was utterly amusing. The woman was no better than him in some respects, toy with someone until they broke and then toss them away in favor of another. Yet he was the heartless one...the thought dragged another dark laugh from him. "So...you intended to shoot me on a whim...for something I had no control over nor any idea of." Each word was laced with dry amusement as he slowly pulled himself to his feet. "And here I thought better of you. Obviously such assumptions on my part were wrong."
One ear flicked toward Alister and Calla for a moment before Twilight returned most of her attention to WoodWhisp. The two would work out their issues without killing each other, as doubtful as that seemed at the moment. The words would sting, but there were some wounds that needed to be laid bare in order to heal. Though...taking a brief glance at the humans she couldn't help but sigh. A dangerous little game they were both playing. WoodWhisp's words however dragged her attention away and back to the other wolf. "She can't remember her past...?" The revelation seemed like such an alien concept to her. A slight flick of her tail and she sighed. "This would have happened sooner or later, so no need to apologize."Calla ignored his words, taunts, distractions. That was all they were, trying to break her down, give him a chance to escape. She wouldn’t let him though, the only place he was going was to the arms of death. She would make sure of that, he would get what he deserved. She had come to make sure of that, prepared for his little games. She would play to an extent, but he would die soon. Pull the trigger now! He started to move. No, hear him out. Show him civility. More words, more meaningless words as he postponed the inevitable. Pull the trigger now! Insults, feigned innocence. How could he do that knowing that she knew? Hear him out. Calla forced back the words as thunder ran overhead, focusing on it to clear her mind. Her anger welled up again as he spoke. He had no room for such words at a time like this, had no right to speak to her like this. She thought she had made herself clear. Calla set off a warning shout, “Stay back.” She hissed, steadying her aim on his head again. She would play his games, so long as he didn’t move. As soon as he tried something she would pull the trigger, until then she could play. Civility, civility, civility, Calla repeated the word to herself until she trusted her voice again. “You know better than that.” Calla spat, how could he not admit his own plans even now? “A whim? How dare you lie to me even now. My trust has obviously been misplaced.” She snorted, starting to shake. It was everything she could do just to keep her aim steady. A crack of lightning, her finger tightened on the trigger, she could feel it starting to give beneath the pressure. Lies and insults, that was all he had left to him. Of course he would never admit his own wrongs, no man ever did.
WoodWhisp nodded, gazing at Calla. Without realizing it he found images and faces of her past escaping from his private thoughts. That rickety shelter she had called home, her parents, Ingard, Iton, Oshen, Vic. As soon as he realized this he shut it down, turning his attention back to Twilight. “It’s repressed every bit of it.” WoodWhisp explained, shaking his head sadly, “The earliest thing Calla remembers is waking up on the Academy steps.” He explained, “But that isn’t your problem Twilight. I apologize.” He had sat down only to jump back up the minute he felt Calla about to pull the trigger. A warning shot, that was all. He breathed sigh of relief, settling back down again, monitoring her as tight as he could, still trying to speak with her.
Pressing his back against the wall, he didn't even flinch when the warning shot struck the wall next to his head. Any vaguely sane soul would have panicked by now or at the very least been well and truly afraid, he was neither...at least not fully. A sliver of fear still danced about in the back of his mind but nothing more than that. The woman wanted him dead, yes but for all the world it didn't seem as though she had the heart to do it herself. If she had she would have already done so.
"Lie to you? Why would I lie to you right about now? I have absolutely nothing to gain from it other than a shot to the head at this point in time." Assuming I don't bleed to death first. He added mentally with a soft snort. "Had I an idea about this do you really think I wouldn't have confronted you before? Or perhaps you think I planned it all...? Granted you were the one that insisted on coming after me."
"That...may be for the best then. Especially if its bad enough to be repressed to such an extent then it needs to remain as such." Nodding firmly, Twilight felt herself rise from her seated position only to return to it moments later once she was certain there hadn't been anymore blood split. Giving a soft snort she shook her head with a weak but good-natured smile, "I'll remember to take my revenge on you for this later~ But for now, I'll let it slide." She said with a light laugh settling for curling around her rider's feet. An apparently relaxed position from all appearances but the black wolf was still on guard, still not trusting the mental stability of either of the humans.Calla trembled, rage boiled beneath the surface, every bit of her wanted to pull the trigger, wanted to see him fall dead. But she was human, she was merciful, she would let him speak. His words, his lies, they meant nothing to her but every prisoner had his rights. She would let him finish, even though he didn’t deserve it, even though she had already let him live long enough. He could talk, he could waste his breath all he wanted. It wouldn’t change anything, he wouldn’t admit anything. Men never did, men never changed. She repeated that to herself, she had to protect it, he would never change. She couldn’t trust him, she shouldn’t have trusted him to begin with! She had been a fool and now she had to kill him. But something held her back. Something about the way he spoke, the look in his eyes, held her back. She could feel it, it was small, hidden deep, but it was there. Fear, he was scared, he feared death. Good, good, let him fear his own demise. Let him suffer and agonize while he kept trying to stop her. “You intend nothing but pain and suffering.” Calla’s tone was much calmer than she felt, she knew her words were true. She knew his plans and intentions, all men were the same. “I can’t let that happen.” This was the only way she could stop it. To protect it meant having to kill him.
WoodWhisp nodded, he would have to work that out on his own. Keep it hidden, continue his lies that he didn’t know any more than she did. The future was all that mattered, the future was all that existed. He would continue to let her think like that, she didn’t need the added weight of her past along with her current problems. She would have to work this out with Alister, maybe, just maybe, he could prove her wrong. “I suppose I deserve it don’t I.” WoodWhisp chuckled, but it was forced. He was still nervous, still afraid Calla would fly off the handle completely and kill him. He wanted to move, to rest beside Twilight, to protect her. But he had to stay here, to stay near Calla and make sure she didn’t move. He wasn’t sure how he would stop her, but he would try when the time came.

Fear was a double edged blade, it always had been and always would be, so why was it that the underlying slivers of fear wiggling around his mind were making his thoughts clearer? Perhaps it was the fact that he refused to fully acknowledge the thing or maybe he already had..? Either way, it was there but not clouding his thoughts or driving him into a fit. Eyes narrowing at her words he scowled, "Had I intended such toward you in particular I would have shot you the moment I saw you." Tilting his head to one side quietly he considered the woman for a moment before speaking again. "I wonder...is it me, you hate or do you hate all men in general...?"
Giving a slight shake of her head as one ear flicked toward the humans once again to make certain they were just talking and not killing each other, Twilight let her jaws loll open in a yawn for a moment. "Perhaps they will get this resolved before night fall? Or at the very least before it starts to rain. I really do want to resume my skinning of that boy." She said a hint of annoyance leaking into her words as her thoughts drifted to the apprentice that had earned her wrath. Arrogant, insolent little brat.Calla snorted. Did he really think that? Was he really that stupid? No of course not, he was just toying with her, just playing with her. He was just the same as them all, her trust and loyalty had been misplaced, she had let her guard down and now she had to kill him. Images of him crumpling, falling dead ran through her mind. Following on it’s heels the image of Alister holding the child. Calla shuddered and hissed, she couldn’t let that happen, she couldn’t allow that to happen. He would only wish it ill, wish suffering and pain upon it. That was how men were, that was how men thought. Her own father was probably dead. Probably, probably, probably. She would never know. She didn’t need to know! All men were the same, her own bloodline included! She would stop this! She would stop Alister. She had to stop Alister. “You did shoot at me Alister.” She reminded him, her voice cold and sharp now as the thunder rumbled about them, whispering words of death to her. “You’re all the same. Bringers of pain and suffering. I have to protect it.” She trembled, even the gun began to sway slightly in her grasp, despite her efforts to keep it still and read to fire. The clock was ticking for him, she would have to pull the trigger soon.
Despite common sense WoodWhisp couldn’t help but let his curiosity win over. “What exactly did he do anyway?” He inquired, realizing now was probably not the time for this but needing something to lighten the mood between them. He hated having both the women in his life distanced from him so. Calla cut off from him and Twilight so far away it seemed. It was bothering him more than he was going to let on. “I mean, I’ve never seen that from you before.” Okay, so he had that day he’d been unable to shut his big mouth and she had turned on him for it. But he had managed to talk himself out of that one for the better.
A soft cluck of his tongue and he gave a rather amused sigh, "Indeed I did, how could I forget that?" Of course he hadn't, it hadn't been at the fore front of his mind but hadn't forgot the fact that he had shot at her and hadn't shot her directly. Maybe if he had they wouldn't be in this situation. Maybe maybe maybe, a little word that wouldn't exactly help him at present. Another flash of lightning blinded him momentarily leaving him blinking to clear his vision
She was trembling. From the faint sway of the gun to much more visible tremors running through her there was only one conclusion Alister could come to. The woman was trembling and her resolve seemed to be weakening. Perhaps there was still a chance that he'd get out of here alive...or at least close to it. "You don't want me dead do you? At least not fully..." He would try to reason with her. Make her see some form of logic and he'd be able to walk out of here fairly unharmed but alive.
Snorting softly she shook her head with a wolfish grin. "Do I need a reason to chase an apprentice or two?" Licking her maw at the thought of returning to her previous activities of torturing unruly apprentices and the like, she managed to stifle a laugh. True she wasn't prone to such activities on a regular basis but that boy had deserved it. "I only snap at the unruly ones that don't have patrons to keep them in line~ Especially the unruly ones with big mouths."Anger, deep rooted and overwhelming, sought to lash out at the man. To be so careless and nonchalant like this, pull the damned trigger! But again contrasting images moved through her mind. Alister dead and bleeding on the ground. Alister holding her child. She shuddered again, either way she couldn’t win. But she had to do this, she had to protect it. She had to protect it as she had been protected and as her child would protect theirs. It was a chain, a cycle that had to continue to keep the next generation alive, in this day and age the next generation was more important than anything. And to do that she would have to remove the previous generation, she would have to remove Alister. Her entire future rode on this moment, requiring her to pull the trigger if she wished her child to have peace. “It doesn’t matter what I want.” Calla hissed, her voice was slightly quieter though, her thoughts passing through her consciousness before leaving her mouth. “I have to do this Alister.” She shuddered as she spoke his name, dual images running again through her mind despite her efforts to block them out, “I have to protect it.” Her voice was starting to break. She swallowed and inhaled deeply, forcing herself to steady the gun. The time had come, his games were over. She would kill him now and be done with it.
WoodWhisp nodded, “Ahh, always they deserve it.” He agreed, “Someone has to keep them in line after all.” His tone was still slightly forced, but he was starting to relax more. Able to feel Calla again, but still unable to be heard in the chaos of her mind. She still resisted him, still insisted on pushing him out. It was so strange, to not feel her presence in his mind, constantly there as he was with her. And still to have Twilight away from him. But he could not hold her loyalties against her, just as she would not hold his against him. They had to stay with their Riders first and foremost, he could admit that even if he didn’t like the concept. He had lived with it, but now to feel them turned against each other, it bothered him greatly. And to have the images of Calla’s past flashing through his mind whenever he let his focus slacken for even a second. He had to keep it buried, had to keep it hidden, had to prevent Calla from finding it and having it change her.
"Do you really believe that though? You're the one holding the gun. Drop it or at the very least stop trying to convince yourself that you have to shoot me." Keeping his voice even, he shifted again to ease the strain on his injured arm. "Besides if you kill me, you'll only be creating more problems for yourself. Kill me and I don't doubt that there will be hell to pay. Killing another rider is utterly unacceptable isn't it?" There had to be something that would drag the woman back to her senses. His death would solve nothing, perhaps a momentary problem or two but in the long run, he would happily (or unhappily depending on how one saw it) be in his grave while the woman was left to deal with whatever hell arose from such actions.
A mildly tempting avenue but not one he cared to examine too closely. Then there was the matter of Twilight...the wolf on her own and fairly unprovoked was a loose cannon, give her a reason to and that loose cannon was more than capable of murder, granted if anything happened to him because of Calla, the woman wouldn't have to worry about what the higher ups would do to her. The wolf had told him on one too many occasions that she was perfectly capable of murder be it of another wolf or a human. A lazy reminder at best..an equally lazy threat at worst. Neither a possibility he wanted to explore ever.
"Of course, if someone didn't they'd over run the forts, not that they haven't done so already." She said adding the last part ruefully at the memory of the unruly brats that had bonded last year. Most had fled to New Eve after several encounters with the White Shadow pack of course the fools had had no idea they were simply jumping further into the inferno. A particularly loud clap of thunder set some of the younger wolves in the fort to howling wherever they were in fort and Twilight sighed keeping her attention partially focused on the humans. There might well be hope to end this on a civil note. Calla's resolve was weakening and she had yet to shoot Alister again, which was a good thing as far as Twilight was concerned. If they got this sorted out without killing each other...well she was going to give them all an earful for interrupting her torture of that pitiful apprentice....maybe. It all depended on how she was feeling once this was all over.Calla only half listened to his words, alternating images torturing her mind, stealing away her thoughts with each beat of thunder. Every crack of lightning screaming it would be better off if she pulled the trigger. And while she knew that was true, she didn’t want to. He was right, though she would never admit that. She didn’t want to pull the trigger, because she knew she would need help. It would be so simple, just pull the trigger back a little farther and he would be dead. A quick motion for a quick death. A quick death for a lifetime of peace. No, she couldn’t think of herself in this. She had to think of it, had to think of protecting it. Anything, she would do anything to keep it safe. And that meant putting herself at risk, that meant killing Alister. “I’m not convincing anyone Alister,” That name only brought more images to mind, “I know what I have to do.” Her voice wasn’t as steady anymore, but rage still moved beneath it. A trickle of sorrow as well, as much as it was necessary she would be sad to see Alister go. “You don’t understand. How could you? I’m willing to risk it. Anything to protect it. No man would ever understand that.” She explained to him as patiently as she could, tightening her shaking grip on the Pistol. With a deep breath Calla pulled the trigger, and at the same time jerked back. The bullet flew away harmlessly and Calla hissed. Whatever had thrown her off balance she would deal with later. Steadying her aim again she pulled the trigger intent on ending his little games. Click. Nothing. Click. Calla swore as she tossed the gun aside, she was out of ammunition. She reached for Simile, she couldn’t find the holster. Calla glanced down to confirm it wasn’t there. Calla swore again and glared at Alister. Thinking quickly, she lunged. She would have to kill him with her bare hands.
WoodWhisp intended to respond, when he picked up something. He felt Calla’s resolution solidify again, she was shooting to kill. WoodWhisp moved, bumping her slightly as she pulled the trigger. Without realizing he ripped away her other gun holster and danced away quickly. A quick scan of her mind proved she hadn’t realized a thing, yet. She would later he knew, but he was in the clear for now. It was then he felt the weight of the gun in his mouth. Moving to Twilight he dropped it before it. “Now’s his chance.” WoodWhisp nodded to her, laying down, “He’s on his own from here.” He loved Calla, but even he knew this was foolish, the least he could do was put both humans on the same level. As he settled himself he felt Calla lunge. Well, at least he could say he had tried.
Whatever reply he had for the woman was gone as he ducked instinctively to dodge a bullet that had been diverted. Two empty clicks assured him that the gun was indeed empty, a revelation that would have made him happily amused if it hadn't been for the fact that the woman lunged at him still intent on killing him. Eyes widening he yelped bolting away from where he leaned against the wall and away from the homocidal woman. At one point he'd very nearly stepped on Twilight's tail in his mad dash to a more open area and mentally he heard the wolf growl. He'd deal with the wolf's snapping later, assuming Calla didn't catch and strangle him first.
Tail swaying, Twilight's hackles rose as she heard the gun go off again and she rose a growl rising in her throat though the moment she saw the gun fall in front of her. Tilting her head at the object for a moment she soon chuckled sitting back down. "At least they're on even ground now." She said though her words ending in a snarl as Alister almost stepped on her tail. She'd snap at him later.Calla wasn’t stupid. It was only logical the man would make a break for it the minutes she dropped the gun, the minute his life wasn’t in immediate danger. And he only had one route to go. Calla pushed off the wall and jumped, she felt herself slam into Alister, knocking him to the ground. With a hand to his throat she shudder slightly. Contrasting images paired with images of the past month danced through her mind. Maybe, maybe she could give him a chance? He had proved his usefulness, at least, maybe he deserved a chance. Every inch of her wanted her to just snap his neck then and there, she was quite capable, but something else stopped her. Something that she didn’t understand prevented her. Calla snorted, she would show him civility. She wouldn’t stoop to his level, she would show him mercy. He didn’t deserve it, and she would reserve the right to kill him when she pleased. “Three reasons I shouldn’t kill you.” She hissed in his ear, anger obvious as she loosened her grip on his neck just enough for him to talk. If his reasons were good enough she might let him live, if he swore to never hurt it she might give him a chance. A week, a month, however long it took for her to be proven right in the end. Then she would kill him, but…she just might let him live a little bit longer.
WoodWhisp almost laughed as Calla shoved him to the ground. Just because she was pregnant didn’t mean she was down and out yet. But something in her was slipping, the mental blockade was starting to chip and crumble, he was getting a closer look at her mind now. Yes, she was going to give him a chance at least. That was enough to soothe him. WoodWhisp smiled as he curled next to Twilight to watch the two of them. The real question now was when was she going to notice he was bleeding? "This is going to be entertaining." WoodWhisp said with a chuckle.
Momentary freedom cut short as he felt a sharp pain in his shoulder and the wind was knocked from his lungs. Coughing and trying to regain some sort of oxygen even with the woman's hand around his throat, he winced. He was going to be black and blue all over by tonight and oh so sore as well. Though that was a minor concern as his brain finally registered that one, he was once again trapped and two, Calla could still kill him.
Coughing again he shuddered listening to Calla's request. Three reasons why should live. Shuddering again he Licked his lips trying to focus. Three simple reasons why she shouldn't snap his neck. "I won't harm you or your child, I'm useful and you really don't want to kill me...?" Quite possibly not the best argument for his life but it was better than nothing.
Forepaws crossed Twilight gave a soft snorting laugh tilting her head at WoodWhisp for a moment before grinning. "Very entertaining." Smirking in wicked amusement Twilight's tongue lolled out as she stiffled a laugh. Really she should feel sorry for Alister but...she didn't.Calla didn’t say anything. She was exhausted and drained, emotionally and physically. She hadn’t managed to get any sleep for a few days now and it was miracle she hadn’t passed out on the job yet. She had been pushing herself harder than usual, trying to keep herself distracted. With a sigh she rolled to the ground beside him, closing her eyes she forced herself to inhale and exhale slowly. She was making a mistake, she knew she was. But he was right, as much as she hated to admit it, part of her didn’t really want to kill him. She felt the adrenaline drain from her system and WoodWhisp’s comforting presence in her mind again. She could tell he was irritated that she had blocked him out, even though she hadn’t really meant to. She also knew it was him who had taken her gun, but she would deal with that later. “I already app-“ Calla started to speak as soon as she felt she could trust her voice again, the anger had drained from her tone leaving it was hollow and raspy, she turned her head towards Alister as she opened her eyes. Her words cut off as she found herself face to face with blood. The implications didn’t really grasp on at first, nothing could really grasp on to her mind right now. “Alister, did you know that you’re bleeding?” she asked, to her it didn’t really seem like a stupid question. She didn’t really remember her previous actions, just a blur of anger and the burning need to kill him, the irritation at his little games, the conflicting thoughts that still fought for space in her mind.
“And there she goes.” WoodWhisp held back laughter as Calla finally noticed Alister’s injury. “I think you’ll find this rather entertaining.” WoodWhisp pointed out, a grin spreading quickly across his face, “Maybe even revenge enough for stepping on your tail.” Indeed, another part of Calla’s past was just about to come into play. Calla hadn’t been all that certain she would Bond, so she had made a point to start thinking about life after the Academy if she didn’t. She’d spent countless nights studying up on a different profession that would still keep her in the Forts.
Drawing in a shuddering breath he stayed still for a moment trying to assess the damage done to his person. Numerous bruises that he really didn't want to think about and of course there were the bullet wounds along his left arm. Speaking of which...a slight shift of his shoulder dragged a hiss of pain from him and he reached up closing his free hand over the wound to stem the bleeding.
Tilting his head he shot Calla a look giving a slight growl of annoyance. "Why yes I do. After all you shot me." Sitting up slowly he flexed his arm to make certain he still had full use of the limb. True every movement sent another spasm of pain through his shoulder but at the very least he knew his arm wasn't broken or unusable. "Granted I've been through worst."
Yawning again Twilight settled her head on her paws snorting softly. "She can have her fun~ I'll get my revenge for him stepping on my tail later." the she-wolf's voice held an unusually cheery tone as she considered the various ways of exacting her revenge on the human. She could bite him but he'd lost more than enough blood in her opinion which left her to consider other means of torture. Flicking her tail she chuckled. "I take this shall be a most interesting few months, no?"Alister hadn’t even finished talking when Calla had jumped up. Balanced on the balls of her heels she pried his hand away and examined the wound. “I don’t see an exit wound which means the bullet is still lodged in there.” Calla muttered, pulling his arm closer, “That bullet is probably all that’s stopped you from bleeding to death! Trying to run with an arm like that, you could have killed yourself! What good would you be then?” She was reaching into her uniform now, from and inside pocket she pulled out a Stiletto dagger and from another pocket a set of forceps. “Either way it’s got to come out quickly. Take off your shirt.” Calla glared at him, obvious that he wasn’t going to get a choice in this. That had to come out and soon, otherwise if he kept moving it then it would only burrow in deeper and slice through the artery. All of Calla’s studies came rushing back to her, nights spent pouring over medical texts, free time spent in the Infirmary doing anything she could to help and observe. Had Calla not bonded she intended to become a doctor, work in the forts, help the WolfRiders in any way she could. But she had been lucky enough to bond to WoodWhisp, but she had continued her studies. A minor hobby now, but still she collected various medical texts when she could, and she found her skills useful in the field. “Come on, shirt off!” She snapped, poking gently at the flesh around the wound trying to judge just how deeply in the bullet had lodged itself. Snorting she turned her attention to the sky, “WOULD IT KILL YOU FOR A LITTLE RAIN HERE!” She shouted, her only response was another roll of thunder.
“Oh she’ll be having fun indeed.” WoodWhisp snickered, draping his tail over Twilight as he watched. “But I doubt he will.” WoodWhisp chuckled as he picked up her command about the shirt. Oh yes, he would put up a fight if she didn’t try to sit on him again to keep him from moving. Just as he thought it he felt the same idea go through her mind briefly. Yes, that’s what she would resort to if he didn’t just cooperate with her. WoodWhisp just sighed and laid his own head down. “Oh yes, a very nice nine months indeed.” WoodWhisp agreed, “Sorry I haven’t been able to get up here lately. I’ve been worried about what she would do if I left. How have you been?” He asked, turning his attention back to Twilight. He had truly been sorry he hadn’t been able to come see her, but as today had proven Calla’s mentality was to be questioned, he had to keep a close eye on her.
Each poke and prod drew a hiss of pain from Alister and at one point very nearly gave into the tempation to bite the woman. Of course such actions while satisfactory for a moment or two wouldn't particularly work in his favor, as such he settled for glaring at her. "Bleeding to death might have well been better than getting strangled." Alister hissed attempting to scoot away from the woman as he eyed the stiletto and forceps warily. Whoever had allowed Calla to keep not only two guns but also a dagger needed to have their mental state evaluated. The woman was dangerous enough as is, taking the guns and dagger into consideration Calla was best avoided.
Barely stifling another hiss as pain shot up his arm again he sighed weighing his options. Ignore Calla and bleed to death and save himself anymore torture at the woman's hands or let her poke around his shoulder in an attempt to cut the bullet out. While the former sounded appealing he had his doubts that he'd be allowed to carry through with such a plan. Which just left him with the latter. Well if that was his only option he was going to be stubborn about it in the least.
Growling at the next series of pokes he considered revisiting his previous plan of simply biting her. Once again that plan fell through. Hearing the shout he sighed again. Maybe he should have listened to Twilight's advice over the years, if he had he wouldn't be stuck with this mad woman.
Grinning at what seemed to be the beginning of another battle, Twilight snorted ears pricked forward as she eyed the humans. "Of course he won't~ Nothing short of sitting on him or tying him up is going to keep him still." A soft chuckle escaped her as she picked up on the thoughts about biting the woman. "He's considering biting her." there was more than a faint hint of amusement lingering in her voice and she stifled another laugh at her rider's final realization. Oh she was going to have so much fun taunting him later.
Tilting her head at the other wolf she snorted softly. "That's understandable...no need to apologize. Alister has been more than keeping me busy." she said with a shrug stifling a yawn. "And what have you been up to besides keeping an eye on your deranged rider?"Calla smiled and had to resist from snorting, “You actually thought I was trying to strangle you?” she chuckled and shook her head, “Oh Alister, I wasn’t going to strangle you, I was going to break your neck.” She clarified, smiling as she returned to her examination. She should be able to get it out without causing much further damage. Part of her wanted for force it in deeper, let it slice open the artery and let him bleed out. But she shoved that voice back. She would stick to her word so long as he stuck to his. And as much as she doubted that would last long she would wait for him to break it first. “And I will go back to breaking your neck if you don’t take your shirt off.” Calla glared back at him briefly, “It’s either that or your pants. Make your choice or I will remove them for you.” She slid the dagger out of it’s sheath and rubbed it across her shirt briefly. It vaguely crossed her mind as to why she hadn’t drawn it on him earlier, but decided that breaking his neck simply sounded like much more fun. “Or I could use my shirt and just let you explain why a shirtless woman is dragging you to the infirmary. It’s up to you really.” When it came down to it Calla really didn’t have that many qualms with either situation, so long as she got the bullet out and most of the bleeding to stop she wasn’t going to be picky.
“I would like to see Calla bite Alister.” WoodWhisp laughed, “I doubt she would handle that well. Especially right now.” WoodWhisp shook his head before laying back down on Twilight’s shoulder. He thought back on the last few weeks, the chaos and anger. Distraction, fear, endless nights spent awake, pacing and worrying despite her attempts to exhaust herself during the day. WoodWhisp reminded her that if she planned on keeping that child she would have to take care of herself. She had not taken that well, of course she intended to keep the child! She had already applied for the transfer to White Shadow. Just because she had to kill Alister didn’t mean she couldn’t honor it as his child. “I haven’t actually been able to get much done. She’s been more of a handful than usual. I was lucky to even get any sleep.” WoodWhisp yawned as he spoke, usually he at least got to sleep at night, Calla was known for sleeping like a rock after all.
“Alister. Bite me and see what happens.” Calla growled, picking up the thought from WoodWhisp. Her patience was already starting to run thin with him again. If he would just cooperate she could have had the bullet out by now and gotten him up and to the infirmary. But instead he insisted on laying here resisting her, determined to die from blood loss it seemed. “I get to decide when you die Alister. And it’s not going to be now! So just cooperate please!” She was starting to get exasperated, here she was making a vague attempt to make up for shooting him in the arm and he wanted to go and make a fight out of it.
"Ah that makes me feel so much better now." Alister's voice was dripping with sarcasm as he eyed the dagger again. To comply or not to comply. On a regular basis he would settle for not complying but after that little display and his current injuries he really didn't doubt that Calla was fully capable and willing to snap his neck still. Scowling at the woman as she outlined the rest of his options, he finally huffed reaching up to begin unbuttoning the collar of the blood soaked shirt. Each shift sent another twinge through his shoulder and he merely ground his teeth in an attempt to ignore the pain. A few more buttons and then to peel the sticky fabric from his arm without causing himself more pain. Easier said than done however.
Hearing the woman's last comment he shot a dark glare at the grinning black wolf. He was going to have Twilight's furry hide on a silver platter one of these days. Hearing the wolf laughing both mentally and verbally he barely stifled a growl of annoyance. "No you don't." huffing in slight annoyance, he began to cautiously peel the shirt off.
Snorting softly she eyed WoodWhisp for a moment before shifting to tug on his ear lightly. "They'll work their problems out." She said growling softly in amusement. Alister was annoyed with her, but that was to be expected considering she'd taken to sharing his plans with WoodWhisp. Flicking her tail a bit she shook her head yawning with the motion. "I swear they're going to run us into the ground by the time this is over...amusing or not." Sleep had always been a foreign concept for her in the winter since it was either freeze to death outside or suffer inside with Alister pacing back and forth or popping up at random hours of the night. True she'd learned to live with it but in the past month or so, it had gotten unbearable, even with numerous threats to chew part of his leg off it hadn't gotten much better.Calla tapper her fingers on the blade impatiently, “It’s only going to hurt more if you peel it away slowly.” Calla pointed out, she was trying to be patient, she really was. But that just didn’t fall under her area of expertise. Eventually her impatience won out as he started to pull the shirt away. Grabbing it she tore it away, pulling it away from the wound quickly. When she was done she’d have to buy him a new one anyway, she was about to rip this one to pieces. Quickly she set about tearing strips from the shirt, cutting off buttons with the Dagger as she came to them. As such she made short work on the shirt, tying one strip tightly above the wound to slow the blood flow. “Hey Alister,” Calla had always had to talk while she worked or she found herself making stupid mistakes, “Why do you hate your family?” She realized now as not the time, considering she was trying to get a bullet out of his arm and had just been trying to kill him, but it was the first thing to come out of her mouth. As she spoke she had the stiletto in hand, carefully she inserted the long thin blade into the wound to test the dept and to pull aside skin and muscle. Yes, it probably hurt, but the bullet had to come out anyway, if it stayed in and she tried to move him to the infirmary it should just tear the artery more and he would probably bleed to death. As such it was surprising he hadn’t yet. With great care she switched hands, using her off hand to hold the dagger steady to keep the wound open, the other held the forceps. Biting her tongue she slid the instruments into the wound, trying not to brush against skin and muscle as she did so.
WoodWhisp smiled as she tugged on his year, stretching out his legs as he watched. “We can only hope, we can only hope.” He spoke sarcastically, considering how Calla was right now he wasn’t so sure this would all end well. But he would hope, maybe, just maybe, having the kid would calm both of them down. As much as he doubted it he could hope, couldn’t he? “You’re not sleeping much?” WoodWhisp asked, immediately worried about her, but he could also understand not being able to sleep with someone like Alister around. WoodWhisp did not imagine him as a heavy sleeper, “Well, Calla has already applied to transfer to White Shadow. As the conditions are I doubt she will be rejected. When we move down here you can sleep with me, Calla sleeps like a rock.” WoodWhisp snorted, having already decided this. He would tell Twilight the same thing he told Calla, she needed her rest. And anyway, he would have absolutely no problem sharing his den with her.
Wincing as the shirt tore at his already sore shoulder, Alister merely hissed opting to ignore Calla for now. Ignoring her would have worked had it not been for the fact that he could feel the dagger slipping into the wound and generally causing him more pain than before. Another hiss escaped him despite his best attempts at stifling the sound. Then the woman's question drifted to him and he barely suppressed a growl.
"I do believe we've been through this before." The subject of his family had never been something he cared to talk about, in this situation those...people were the last things he wanted to think about. Still he would...humor her for the most part, if only to find a way to ignore the pain darting through his arm and shoulder.
Snorting softly Twilight's tail swayed slowly and she stretched arching her back as she did so. Settling back down even as her claws flexed for a moment before she relaxed again. "It's impossible to sleep with Alister pacing or popping up at random hours. It's been getting worst in the past month or so." She shrugged before smirking a bit. "Hrm...Alister isn't going to like that bit of news one bit though." The thought amused her and it was clear in her voice. "I shall gladly take you up on that offer if only for a week." Tail swaying slowly she yawned again. True she could live on very little sleep but after a few weeks straight of not getting more than a few hours sleep it was starting to wear on her reserves.Calla thought about it, had they discussed it before? Not to her memory they hadn’t, and she was certain she wasn’t that oblivious. “I don’t think we have Alister. I find myself here knowing surprisingly little about you.” Calla pointed out, sparing a glance at him before returning to her work. She found that thought slightly disturbing actually, the fact that she actually knew so little about the father of her child. Yes, her child. He would have to earn that acknowledgment, which she doubted he would even care. Beneath her loosely tucked uniform she was already beginning to show, she could already tell this was going to be a very long nine months. Part of her still refused to admit that for some of that she would be forced to give up her WolfRider duties, she had no idea what she would do with herself when that day came. As thunder rumbled again she forced these thoughts from her head and returned her focus to the wound at hand. She felt more than saw the pressure on the forceps meaning she had come in contact with the bullet. With so little light she was forced to function on touch more than sound as she grasped hold of the lead and began to tug it lightly. It had lodged itself in rather nicely, close to the artery. She would have to be very careful about pulling this out without causing and further damage.
WoodWhisp smiled, “Yes, I highly doubt Alister will like that.” The thought amused him almost as much as Twilight. Calla would, in some hormonal rage, put a gun to his head, again, to make him change his mind. Oh yes, Alister was not going to be getting much peace after the transfer. He could feel the thoughts forming in the back of Calla’s head already, if she was going to let him live she was going to force him to be a father. “Stay as long as you wish Twilight. I’m in no hurry to see you go.” WoodWhisp was actually rather glad about the transfer. Being able to see Twilight as often as he pleased, not having to sneak away or have Calla always attempting to talk him into a visit. And he would probably get more rest at that.
"I can say the same for you." Shifting uncomfortably at the slight pulling sensation he stifled a slight groan. Removing bullets had always been an uncomfortable task with fully trained doctors, this situation was making that uncomfortable feeling worst even with everything he was trying to do to distract himself from the occasional twinges of pain. Swallowing Alister forced his thoughts away from the injury and back to the conversation. Anything was better than thinking about the thing lodged in his shoulder.
"And I don't hate all of my family...just most of them." He would have shrugged had it not been for the fact that his arm both refused to move and didn't need to be moved. Most of his family annoyed his eternal soul, the rest...he could careless about. But his overly bratty cousin that had died last winter, she was an exception.
Chuckling Twilight's tail swayed and she grinned tilting her head at WoodWhisp again. "He's going to be a nightmare to live with you know." Even with that knowledge she still couldn't help but laugh. Oh yes, Alister would be hiding out in his room more and more once that transfer went through. Chuckling again in amusement, she merely gave an amused growl. "I do think I'm going to loathe having to leave at any given point." It was true, a chance to get some sleep without hearing her rider pacing back and forth all night, and a chance to see WoodWhisp whenever she wanted? Ah if only transfers happened overnight.“Welcome to the club.” Calla muttered under her breath, never once pausing. Alister, foolish, naïve little Alister. He was lucky, he knew his family, he could see them whenever he pleased. And he resented that. Calla resisted the urge to shoot him again for his stupidity. She would never know her parents, know where she came from, she would never get to meet her family. Alister was lucky, where he realized it or not. “Except for your cousin?” Calla questioned, moving on as if she hadn’t heard his first statement at all. She had never informed anyone of her lack of memory, and never intended to. Alister was no different in that regards. She had let him live as it was, he was on thin ice and in no position to go on questioning her anyway. Calla reached for what had once been Alister’s shirt as she pulled the bullet free and immediately set to stemming the blood flow. Her attempts to slow the blood were about as effective as trying to catch raindrops in a strainer. As soon as she got a new layer tied on in started to bleed through.
“Calla isn’t looking so forward to it herself.” WoodWhisp chuckled, “But mostly she’s in denial right now.” WoodWhisp pointed out with a sigh. Oh yes, once the whole thing sunk in and the transfer was complete, Alister was going to hear about it. And being in the same for it was going to be harder for him to hide than it usually was. WoodWhisp could vouch for that, the woman was harder to avoid than a bloodhound. “Then don’t leave.” WoodWhisp suggested, “Calla’s grown rather fond of you for having to put up with Alister, she certainly wouldn’t send you back to that.” WoodWhisp realized this was very unlikely but he could get hopeful. Calla was rather fond of Twilight, and living with Alister the wolf had easily earned her respect. And of course WoodWhisp would never have her leave.

Wincing slightly Alister let out a slow breath before relaxing a bit. "Yes that brat. As for the rest..." He gave a soft snort at the thought. Oh yes, he could well remember the last time he'd 'visited' his family. He wouldn't have done it if it hadn't been Ana's funeral, if it hadn't been for the fact that he actually liked the girl he wouldn't gone anywhere near those people. Alas such matters were in the past, and as such there was no need to dwell on it. After all he still had that oh so lovely bullet wound to worry about. Sparing a glance at his shoulder he looked away. The bullet was out, and he was starting to bleed out. Which would explain why he was beginning to feel light headed.
"I can't imagine why." Twilight said with an almost purring growl as she began to rise and stretch lazily. An amusing nine months indeed. Though, she gave another stretch feeling her back bones slip into place, Alister would have to find new hiding places considering Calla would be in the same fort and would have no trouble finding him. Letting out a soft sigh she shook her head. "You tempt me so." she said with an amused grin padding toward the humans and circling for a moment.
That needs stitches. she purred at Alister mentally and heard the agitated growl in reply. He knew she was right, and he was denying it. She was going to have so much fun rubbing his face in this one later.“That brat?” Calla shook her head as finally she was able to get on a few layers without them immediately bleeding through, “You’re such a nice person Alister.” Sarcasm was thick as she wiped her blade on the grass and replaced it and the forceps to they’re hidden pockets. Pocketing the bullet she brushed herself off and made to stand up. “Alright you, we need to get you to the Infirmary so I can get that properly cleaned and closed up.” She sighed as she stretched herself out to pop various joints. The bullet was out, now she just needed to stop the bleeding and he’d be fine. Yes it was bad, but she had seen worse in her time, some Recruits just got careless and came in with strange injuries. They always had a different story but Calla had no doubt it was Nightwing or Adrian inflicting them. Granted she had always been prejudiced against the Drill Sergeant, men and children should not be left alone together. Finally Calla glanced around her surroundings, glad to see that with the weather threatening as it was they were mostly alone. That made everything quite easier. “Twilight dear.” Calla smiled as she saw the wolf come over, “Would you be so kind as to help me get things thing to the Infirmary? I don’t trust him to walk.” Calla only hope the wolf would forgive her.
“Ah, but what would you do if I didn’t?” WoodWhisp smirked as he yawned and pulled himself up after her. And here he had been looking forward to a nice little nap, Calla just had to finish up didn’t she. Ah well, he was a master of patience, and soon he would be able to see Twilight at his leisure. He just had to wait, transfers like this almost never got turned down. He had no particular attachments to New Eve, the only thing he was sad to leave were his hiding places, it was always such work to find new ones.
"But of course I am." Sarcasm for sarcasm. At least it was better than focusing on his growing light headness and increasing lack of blood. "Besides Ana earned that title." Eying the circling black wolf he reached out with his good arm to grab the scruff of her neck as she passed close and paused. "I am not a thing and I can walk thank you very much." he muttered irritably pulling himself to his feet and regretting the action instantly. Staying still for a moment as he steadied himself and willed the ground to stop swaying, Alister gave a huff as Twilight side stepped and crouched to force him onto her back. If it weren't for the fact that he knew he was likely to collapse and that the wolf would possibly drag him straight to the infirmary if that happened he would have refused the rather pushy offer.
"I'd likely die of boredom." Giving a slight flick of her tail Twilight snapped her jaws at first Alister and then Calla once, a clear show that she was anything but pleased with either of them. Feeling Alister's fingers tighten in her fur she resisted the urge to snap at him again, though that urge was only intensified when she felt him sway slightly. Damn stubborn man, huffing she side stepped bumping the human lightly before crouching and eying him darkly. It was either he got on willingly or she would drag him to the infirmary...either one worked for her really.Calla resisted the urge to laugh as he nearly fell down. “Y’know, I’m not the kind of person to say I told you so…” Calla chuckled, moving out of the way of Twilight’s jaws as the wolf snapped, “But I told you so.” Sing song and sarcastic but Calla never took her eyes away from Twilight. It was clear the wolf still wasn’t happy, but on the plus side she wasn’t flat out trying to kill Calla. That was progress, hopefully one day she would be able to win back the Wolf’s trust. Probably not one day soon, but eventually would be nice, give her something to look forward to. Calla brushed herself off and retrieved her guns, bowing to Twilight as she passed the wolf, “You’re help is greatly appreciated.” Tucking the broken holster under her arm and putting the other gun away she turned for the infirmary. “Ana eh? Such a pretty name.” Calla smiled to herself, she would rather have liked to meet the girl, or any of Alister’s family for that matter, out of curiosity.
“Precisely.” WoodWhisp nodded as he padded after her, “Almost makes putting up with Calla worth it eh?” He chuckled as she snapped at Calla. Shaking his head as his rider collected her stuff. WoodWhisp was glad few people were about, it would be rather difficult to explain a scene like this to anyone. He was sure once Calla got him to the Infirmary she would come up with some elaborate lie to place all the blame on him. That would be just like her after all, and not the first time she’d done it. What was he going to do with her.
Shooting a near acid glare at Calla, Alister settled himself flat against Twilight's back and sighed. His arm had gone numb, whether that was a good thing or a bad thing he wasn't sure. Sighing again, he considered sitting up before deciding against it. "Anastasia Delarose, the brat queen." He muttered with a snort and shifted slightly to make himself more comfortable on the wolf's back as she started to move. "To be honest...I think the two of you could have lived together." Another shift to settle his forehead lightly on Twilight's back.
"Almost." Chuckling softly as the woman bowed to her Twilight's tail flicked slowly as she began the slow trek to the infirmary. Temptation she demanded that she kick Alister off, but she'd be nice to him. For now anyway. Her revenge would come later.Calla was sure that statement was supposed to be an insult towards her, but she didn’t particularly care. “That nice of a girl eh?” She chuckled, she just couldn’t imagine someone like that being related to Alister. In reality she had a hard time of imagining Alister having a family. Granted she had a hard time imagining anyone having a family, it was such a foreign concept to her. Someone who loved you no matter what, someone who would take care of you, someone you could always go home to. The concept of that existing completely eluded her. And here was Alister, rejecting all that. Was he really so stupid? Calla glanced up at the clouds, wondering maybe if all families were like that. She wouldn’t be, no she couldn’t let that be. Her child would not feel that sense of loss she felt or the hatred Alister seemed to harbor, she would do everything to prevent that.
“Almost?” WoodWhisp said, mock-offended, “She is sorry y’know.” WoodWhisp felt the need to point out, still felt the need to defend his rider. “She just doesn’t know what else to do.” WoodWhisp glanced over at Calla and shook his head a bit, the girl was back about her own thoughts. But she was paying more attention than he originally thought she was, as he was quick to realize. ‘Would you not share my personal thoughts with the world kthanks.’ WoodWhisp just snorted at her, he would have to deal with her later.
"Nice and insistent." And stubborn, among other things... Alister's voice trailed off as he directed his gaze elsewhere. Perhaps this had not been the safest route to take as far as conversations went. Letting out a slow breath he closed his eyes as he sought to push the thoughts and memories back. Ana was dead. He'd known it was going to happen for years, he'd come near to being forced to accept that fact before he'd joined the academy when the girl had almost bled to death. Everyone had been certain Ana wouldn't survive the week, the girl had done more than just survive the week, she'd survived for eleven more years until a simple case of pneumonia had killed her.
The thought seemed laughable really. After nearly bleeding out, one would have never thought that something as simple as that could kill her. That was probably the reason why he was still in disbelief about the whole ordeal. Stubborn Ana, bratty Ana, dead all because she decided she'd wanted to follow him through the academy and ignore every wish and whim of the family. Though, Ana's stubbornness wasn't the one thing to blame, it was the family really. If they hadn't attempted to baby the girl, then she wouldn't or at least wouldn't have been that driven to prove herself to them all.
Giving a soft purring growling, Twilight merely snorted skirting the corner of the building as she moved closer to the infirmary. Her being sorry doesn't mean I can fully forgive her, and you know that. Huffing slightly at the other wolf, Twilight shifted her gaze skyward before scenting the air lightly. The rain would come soon...and when it did at least it would match the general mood of everyone about.
A slight huff sounded from the black wolf as she shook her head. Calla didn't trust Alister, after all he'd done, it was understandable but the woman didn't know the half of it. Ears flicking back at the thought she swallowed down a growl. True Alister liked his secrets and most of those secrets were better off not being voiced to the public but at the very least, for the life of her, Twilight couldn't understand why the humans couldn't work it out peacefully. Calla chuckled, indeed Ana sounded just like her type of person, it blew her mind that someone like that was related to Alister. “A strong woman knows when to stand her ground.” Calla nodded sharply, a strong woman never gave in to a man she stood her ground a taught him his place. A glance at Alister caused Calla to sigh to herself, this particular man would be rather difficult to teach where he stood. While Calla did not particularly look forward to the task she had no choice in this particular situation. What was done was done though, she had already applied to transfer, there was nothing more she could do about it now but make sure he stayed alive long enough to be of use to her. This in mind she moved within range of Twilight so she could get a look at her makeshift bandage and make sure it was still holding up well enough. “What happened to her?” Calla found herself asking, curiosity winning over, “If you don’t mind my asking.” Calla tacked on last minute, realizing that question did seem rather rude. She wasn’t sure why she care if he thought it was rude or not, but she did and that was all there was to it. Even though part of her still longed for him to bleed, part of her lay in the back of her brain whispering of accidents and blood. She would resist for now. One chance, that was all, he would get once chance to prove himself useful and worthy of being alive.
I know, I know. WoodWhisp sighed a bit, he realized it wouldn’t be that easy for Twilight to forgive his rider, but he could hope. Maybe one day he could convince the two to get along again. WoodWhisp followed Twilight’s gaze instinctively, wondering what she could be staring at. Rain clouds, dark and ominous. WoodWhisp shuddered slightly and put forth the effort to block off some part of his mind from the distracted Calla. It had been dark that night to. That night that Calla lost everything. A storm had been threatening her at that point and she had lost everything. Could it mean something now? The dark clouds overhead threatening them with a storm, and a bad one at that. Could it signify another loss maybe. WoodWhisp shook the thought from him, such omens meant nothing, just superstition. Plenty of storms had happened in the past ten years, probably many twice as bad as this one. But none quite like this, none on the same day as something as life changing as this.
"A strong woman knows when to stand her ground and when to retreat. A stubborn woman knows the first but not the last." Wincing slightly as pain flared in his shoulder briefly, he shot a glare at Calla. Poking and prodding, poking and prodding...always asking questions that didn't need to be asked. Normally had it been any other member of his family he wouldn't have been so bothered by answering, after all as far as he was concerned they weren't even worthy of his pity. Ana was a completely different story. Maybe he had gotten overly attached to the girl... "She died of pneumonia last winter." There was an easily detectable slip of bitterness and the man gave a slight growl shifting on the wolf's back to steady himself. "She joined the academy because she wanted to prove that she didn't need to be babied, that she could survive without that god forsaken family."
It needs to rain. A soft muttered observation as the wolf's tail flicked lazily. The rain would do everyone some good, maybe...maybe it wouldn't. Still there was a certain taste of...sorrow hanging in the air and she didn't like it. Not in the least, the mere scent of sorrow brought back memories that were best left buried. Another rumble of thunder dragged her from her dark thoughts and Twilight looked up again not for the first time cursing the taunting sky. “No Ali, it’s just that smart women don’t back down from you.” Calla pointed out with a smirk, glad to see he was still capable of being sarcastic. The wound hadn’t done enough damage to deter him from that. As much as she would never admit it, she was slightly worried about him. Only slightly though, the rest of her still chanted for his death. But she couldn’t help breathing a sigh of relief at the same time, it had been hard to assess the damage in this gloomy light, she wasn’t really sure how severe the wound was. But the bullet was out and the bleeding seemed to be slowing down at least a bit. That was good progress. Calla had detected a reluctance in him before, but the surge of bitter hatred that spiked over her threw her off her stride. It wasn’t that it was particularly strong, it was that he had been relatively nonchalant it seemed before that. The sudden change jammed up her thought process. “You blame them.” Calla whispered, watching him closely as he shifted. She wanted to tell him to stop, that it would only encourage the bleeding, but somehow now didn’t feel like the time, “That’s why you hate them, isn’t it?” It wasn’t really a question, the answer was right there in his words, but she said it anyway. This was a part of Alister she had never seen, and she wanted to find out more.
No. The response was automatic, We need it gone. This storm doesn’t smell calm. he inhaled the air about him deeply and then sighed. Indeed things did not smell right, he wasn’t sure if it was the humans or the weather, but something didn’t smell right. WoodWhisp glanced at his rider, she was diving and prying into things she didn’t need to be. He agreed that she had the right to know something about the father of her child, but this was not the place to start. She was only going to cause herself more trouble of that he was sure. He could only hope now that they would still be able to end the day on a civil note at least. WoodWhisp wasn’t sure he could handle much more chaos today.
If Alister had heard Calla's first words, he gave no indication of it. There were other things on his mind that easily squashed whatever reply he had for her. Her next words however didn't escape his notice and he settled his narrowed gaze on her, contemplating whether or not to even answer. He didn't need to answer her really, the stiffening of his entire body was more than enough of an indication that Calla had finally hit a fairly sore spot. A sore spot that he had no intention of considering or giving into.
His...distaste for his family had only increased when he'd found out the real reason why Ana had joined the academy, and that little well had finally bubbled over when the girl had died. Though to say that was the only reason he cared so little for his family would be a lie, even if only a partial one. Coming to a final decision he dragged his gaze away. There was no need for words as far as he was concerned. The answer was there, the woman only had to look for them.
The only way for the storm to leave is for it to rain and rage. There was another delicate sniff from Twilight before she continued, Though I do agree...this storm is anything but calm to put it frankly...its unsettling. Tossing her head lightly she sighed and flexed her claws as she walked. She wasn't so sure it was simply the storm anymore. Yes the dark feel of it had made her edgy earlier but now, now there was something more mixed in with the stormy air. A peculiar taste that she couldn't put a name to. Something wasn't right, and she wasn't sure if it was the storm, the humans or both, but a little nagging part of her brain was beginning to tug toward the latter. A slight glance over her shoulder at her rider and she gave another soft sigh. Calla words had struck home, she could feel it. She was at least partly right, she could tell from the look he gave her. This conversation was certainly going in a direction he didn’t like. Calla knew she should back off, but her curiosity demanded she push on. These were things she had never seen in Alister before, a past like this, these were not the things Calla was used to reading from Alister. The way she had seen him, cold and isolated, the thought that he could actually care for anybody like this was surprising. He had been closer to Ana than he had ever been with anyone else, she could tell that. And the thought made her smile actually, there was something else there that she hadn’t seen before and was only getting a glimpse of now. If she kept going, maybe she would get to see more. “She was following you.” Calla whispered as he looked away, she was beginning to understand. He had been attached to Ana, and he had lost her. He never wanted to let that happen again, he never wanted to feel that again. And in a way she envied him. She had never gotten to have a relationship like that, she had never had a chance to get close to anyone. It had always been a work relationship for her, nothing personal, a little fun here and there. It was better to have and lose, than to never have, but Alister was making her feel slightly less certain about that. And at the same time she had to wonder, would he be like this to his own child? Or would he even be willing to be a father?
WoodWhisp nodded his agreement reluctantly. Whatever this storm was bringing he was too exhausted to face it. Sleepless nights were building up, nights of trying to talk Calla down even though he knew it was futile. He hadn’t want to bring her to Twilight in her original state, her original plan to slay him immediately. He had had some success at least, she had paused and given Alister a chance to talk. The sacrifice was worth it but he didn’t know how much more he could face before he collapsed right now. A heavy weight was settling it seemed, there was more to come before this day would be over. Unsettling to put it the least. WoodWhisp’s tail twitch in anticipation as he constantly searched about, seeking the next spark to the wildfire. Though he knew it was right there, walking just on the other side of his beloved. Calla was certainly to be the bringer of chaos, the question was just what the spark was going to be and who would go first. He only hoped Alister had the wits about him to not anger her further today.
A slight twinge danced through him and Alister bit back a groan, burying his face in Twilight's fur he struggled to force back the memories. At first the twinge was the only indication that Calla's words had opened up something that was better left buried. The twinge however was soon followed by a slight tremor, it seemed to be unnoticeable at first but after a few moments the tremors grew worst. The woman was pushing in an attempt at seeing something...something that he'd buried ages ago. Ana had slipped under his defenses, had managed to worm her way into his life until he had had no choice but to accept her and even then he hadn't fully allowed her to delve completely into his soul. Ana had dragged him back to something close to human, but she hadn't fully succeeded.
Another series of tremors and he barely managed to steady himself. Would she have been able to drag him back to something decidedly human, if she had had the time? He didn't doubt it. Ana had been good to tearing apart his defenses, even if it took weeks the girl would achieve just what she wanted and then some. Still...Letting out a shuddering breath he didn't lift his head, he couldn't lift his head. The action would have taken too much effort, caused too much pain. That didn't prevent him from speaking though. "Just..stop..." His voice was wavering and muffled from his position.
Drawing in a careful breath to steady his voice Alister shifted a bit before lifting his head and pinning Calla with wavering mismatched eyes. His gaze was blank, eyes flickering from time to time but there was no other indication aside from the occasional shudder and his unsteady breathing that Alister was still alive. Mentally he'd retreated, withdrawing in an attempt to block out any further questions and resurfacing memories. Alister had withdrawn, and it was going to take a fair amount of work to draw him out of the little hole he'd taken to hiding in.
Twilight's tail flicked and her ears drifted backward once again. The storm would bring change, be it for better or for worst it would bring change and after the chaos that had ruled mere moments before she wasn't exactly sure she wanted to or would be able to deal with anything else at this point in time. The pair had almost killed each other, and now, a slight twitch danced through her and up her spine, Calla and her questions had driven Alister back and she dare not attempt to lure him back. It wouldn't work. Letting out a soft sigh Twilight lowered her head, glad the trek to the infirmary was drawing to a close. Five more minutes of walking if that much. Five more minutes until she could relax, if only slightly without the humans looming with their moods. He's retreated... A soft sigh escaped the black wolf and she cast a glance at WoodWhisp. She's poked too much and too far. It was a quiet observation, an admittedly tired observation that nearly drew another sigh from her. Calla didn’t hear his words, muffled and unintelligible, and even if she had been able to understand him she probably wouldn’t have heard him, her mind focused on something else. She had struck something, unburied something she could safely assume no one had found in a long time. There was a heart buried under there, a heart her hid because it hurt. Calla could understand that, she could understand she certainly had a task ahead of her, this wasn’t something she could just let be. There was something here, an opportunity to understand Alister just a little bit more. Alister himself had said Calla and Ana would get along, and it seemed Ana was now helping her get to Alister, get to the father of her child. Calla only wished she could thank the girl for that. Maybe one day WoodWhisp could find out where the girls grave was for her, she couldn’t help but feel she owed a lot to Ana right now. As Alister trembled Calla moved forward instinctively, resting a hand on his shoulder, but she didn’t relent. Brushing aside a message from WoodWhisp she pushed onward, even as she felt him starting retreating. “That’s it.” She whispered as he looked up at her, his eyes seemed empty but she refused to lose him now, “That’s why you’re like this. You feel guilty for bringing her here.” He was angry at the family for letting her go, that he had confirmed himself, but Calla was starting to think that he was even angrier at himself for bringing her here. For being what led her to the Academy where she died. And of pneumonia no less. Though Calla could understand that, pneumonia could get bad fast, especially for those with little exposure to such things, and from what Calla was gathering Ana had been a very sheltered child. It was no wonder she had died of the disease. Calla only wished she had been there, she had been able to help. Pneumonia could be very bad, but it wasn’t incurable even in the frail, it just needed time and devout attention. Something she knew from experience that the Academy infirmary always seemed short on.
WoodWhisp nodded, giving Calla a warning to back off, only to be brushed aside. She was much too focused on Alister right now, and WoodWhisp couldn’t help but feel that to be a bad thing. A few more attempts to get through only to be brushed aside again and he gave up, shaking his head. I’m sorry Twilight. He nosed his exhausted mate, She refuses to listen to me. She won’t let this go. Just when he thought they might have a somewhat steady calm it seemed things were about to get radically out of hand again. He had seen it coming, he just hadn’t wanted to admit it. Calla, stubborn, curious Calla seemed to have her mind set on wringing as much information out of Alister as possible. He had known she would at some point, the overwhelming need to examine people always nagged at her, especially to those she was close to. And she found herself much closer to Alister than she would admit. And not just possessive either as she was often insisting.
Another slight shudder ran through Alister and he swallowed shying away from Calla. She was still poking into this things, making matters worse and the only thing he wanted right now was to get away from her. Away from the poking and prodding, and most of all away from the words that were doing more harm than good. Shivering steadily now, faintly the question of whether it was the blood loss or something else getting to him flashed through his mind, though he paid it very little attention. That wasn’t important, nothing was important at this point in time other than staying away from the woman and her attempts to drag him back to something he didn’t want to face again.
Ana was dead, she’d been dead for close a year and he had absolutely no reason to even consider feeling guilty. He hadn’t been the one babying the girl, he hadn’t driven her out or put the idea that she needed to prove herself to the family. Though…there was a sliver of doubt that was twisting the knife edged shards of guilt in his gut to the point where the only thing he could do was withdraw further and will Calla and her questions away.
Why do you want her to go away though? Is it because she’s actually right?
The voice was annoying, whispering little lies and shredding what was left of his confidence and sanity. The former was proving to be harder than the latter to shred however, though for all its trouble the little voice was having a field day.
Hrm…your aunt was right when she said you’d be the death of Ana. Right in so many ways. A chuckle accompanied the comment and Alister barely swallowed down a whimper. Bit by bit, piece by piece the thing was intent on stripping him to the very core and leaving him to bleed, and it was succeeding rather spectacularly.
For a moment anyway.
Something cut the whispering voice off mid sentence and Alister felt a brush of something or rather someone familiar. Twilight. The wolf had calmly dragged him back from the brink just as she’d done on several occasions. Even so, Alister was comfortable where he’d withdrawn, much too comfortable.
It took a moment for Twilight to register WoodWhisp’s words before she gave a soft sigh shaking her head mostly from the added weight of fatigue than anything else. Calla had no idea what she was digging into. There were memories that had been buried and needed to remain buried, things that had Alister balancing rather nicely on a knife edge from the abyss. Things she’d discovered over the years, things…that she’d sleep much better not knowing.
But that was besides the point wasn’t it? That wasn’t what was bugging her right now. Something was bugging her rider far more than Calla’s questions. A something that to be honest was better left unacknowledged and buried. An irritated growl rumbled through her, and she snapped her jaws at Calla once, then twice, a clear show of irritation and a warning that the woman was to back off lest she risk getting bitten. And this time, Twilight had every intention of following through on those threats, even as she dragged her rider back from the edge of the abyss once again, the she-wolf kept one ear turned toward Calla. One more question, one more move and Alister wasn’t going to be the only one needing a visit to the infirmary. She felt Alister pull even farther away from her, and part of her was telling her to stop. But she didn’t, couldn’t, something else told her she had to keep pushing and digging. Anything and everything she could find. Alister’s reactions had already confirmed for her that he felt guilty, but what exactly was it that was pushing down on him like this. There was something hidden deep here and Calla couldn’t just let this chance, this little chip in his cold exterior, escape her. It was chances like this that she needed to come to understand what drove him, things like this that would prove whether she had made a mistake in leaving him alive or not. But at the same time she wouldn't admit that he needed to get this behind him, and that she wanted to help him do that. “I get the feeling she had a similar outlook.” Calla pointed out, she had no way to confirm this but she seemed to be on the right track so she might as well continue it, "She hated them, and she envied your escape. She probably blamed them for taking you away from her." Calla whispered, her voice seemed softer now, almost as though she pitied him. WoodWhisp tried to get her to stop, but she ignored him, brushed aside his pleas. She had something more important to focus on right now. It was Twilight's snaps that pulled her out of her tunnel vision. All she did was shoot the wolf and understanding glare, but she wouldn't back down. Not now, now while he lay defenseless before her. She had already lost the wolfs trust, she might as well take advantage of the situation that had been presented to her. But are you helping? Can you honestly say that. Look at him, how he crumbles before your words. It's always darkest before the dawn. He's got to learn to trust me eventually. He'll hate you for it. He already does. You believe that? Shut up. This is none of your concern. The thoughts flew round and round her head, and as she looked at him, examined him closely, saw the look in his eyes, she couldn't help but feel slightly guilty. He'd probably never forgive her for this, but she had no intention of asking for his forgiveness, she didn't need it. It was up to him to prove his worth.
WoodWhisp pressed his nose into his loves neck. Calm love, please calm. He whispered gently as she lashed out at his Rider. He had to protect Calla, he knew that much, but he had vowed to protect Twilight as well. If it came down to a fight between the two women he wasn't sure what he would do, if he would find it in himself to do anything. He had a sneaking suspicion that all he could do would be to look on dumbfounded, trapped by his love for both of them. Calla and him had sparred, on occasion, usually when she was bored and sick of shooting at things that didn't fight back. They'd both learned from it, he'd learned to dodge a bullet and she'd learned to fight a wolf. Twilight was smaller than he was, but she was also faster. No, he had to stop those thoughts now, he didn't like the path they would go down. He would deal with what came when it came, right now he had to focus on preventing this from escalating.
Silence reigned even as Calla continued with her questioning. Alister's throat had tightened to the point where he couldn't speak even if he wanted to. Which he didn't. He just wanted to hide away in this little corner of his mind and ignore the world for the rest of eternity. Alas that wouldn't be logical but for now it would work. It had to. Shuddering, his grip on the wolf's black pelt tightened, a motion that sent a jolt of pain up his arm and nearly dragged him from his stupour. It didn't work fully though. His eyes were still glazed. Blank and glazed and from the looks of things he wasn't likely to speak to Calla again anytime in the near future.
This was of course assuming he didn't bleed to death. A fact that left him strangely at ease. Was he eager for death? At the moment he really wasn't sure. Death seemed to be the easy way out, the coward's way out, something would have crossed his mind had he been thinking rationally. He wasn't.
The questions were drifting around through his mind again and he swallowed, shaking his head at the woman even as a mixture of the pain dancing through his body and the strain of memories the questions were starting to drag to the surface. Had he had his way, Anna would've still been alive and locked up in the city. Not six feet under in an unmarked grave on the Academy grounds. She'd followed him. Followed him because he'd escaped the death grip his family had on him. And now look where that had gotten her. Dead. And as for him? He was as good as dead to be honest.
"It doesn't matter."
His voice was low and pain laced but if anyone cared to hear it, they would. He couldn't care otherwise. But this bit of clarity was refreshing, refreshing enough to drag him away from that crumbling edge of sanity.
"It doesn't matter. She's dead and that's the end of it."
A low whine slid from Twilight's throat and she nudged her mate back. She's prying into things that need to remain buried! She had no love or respect left for the woman to be honest. All her loyalty lied with her rider. Her rider and the larger wolf trying to calm her. Love ran deep, she had to admit that much but, her vow to Alister ran far deeper. It had been nearly forged in blood years ago out on that frozen lake and now, here she was questioning that bond and vow.
Shaking her head quickly, her lips curled away from her fangs in another low warning snarl. She was torn. If she lashed out at Calla she'd have to fight both the woman and WoodWhisp. Assuming WoodWhisp decided to stand against her. Or even took a side. Calla shook her head, eyes closed to block out the scene before her. The thunder rumbled above her and now more than ever she wished the sky would just open up, wash all this away. "But it does matter Alister." She resisted the motherly urge to rest a hand on his shoulder, his arm, anything. Somehow she knew he would not appreciate such an action. She wished she could better understand his pain, but she had never had anything to lose. She had WoodWhisp, he was all she had ever had the closest thing she could compare to family. She knew she would be shattered if she ever lost him, but that was a given. They were connected mentally and so much deeper, it wasn't the same as what Alister had with Ana. She wanted to express her pity, but he would hate her for that, she wanted to show him sympathy, but he wouldn't want it. As much as she hated the man she couldn't begrudge his pain over having lost something important to him. "It matters to you." Calla bit her lip, what she could say she didn't know. She had wanted an opportunity to understand him better, but was it worth the cost? Was this crumbling psyche before her worth the cost of learning a bit more about him? A question she wouldn't be able to answer, not for a long while she felt. For now she would have to fight her own conflicts. Her attempts to give him sympathy while at the same time hating him that he even had a family. She had always thought she was better off without her family, they had obviously abandoned her at the Academy. But now that she had one, however dysfunctional and broken, she knew she wanted to defend it. Even if that meant defending Alister.
WoodWhisp winced at Twilights whine. He was a failure, he couldn't uphold any of his promises, everything he tried only brought about more pain to the people he loved. But something wouldn't let him just leave this, something selfish deep inside wouldn't let him just leave Twilight and take all the suffering with him. Everything comes out eventually. Was all he could say, Even Calla's past will come out with time. It was a poor excuse and a poor defense, but it was earnest and it was all he could do right now it seemed. He knew that he was all that was standing between Twilight and Calla right now, he could feel it in the way his love bristled beside him, but he knew that that shield wouldn't last much longer. Why couldn't Calla ever just listen to him? Why didn't the woman ever learn when to stop!?

The snort that escaped him at the woman’s words was easily heard and it seemed the wolf under him shared such sentiments. Of course Ana’s death mattered to him but he wasn’t about to admit that to anyone. Only Twilight knew his darker thoughts and secrets and it would remain as such. It had worked wonderfully that way for years and it would continue to work that way no matter who interfered, Calla or otherwise.
”Oh no it doesn’t Calla. It never mattered to me.” The words came out as a bitter laugh and soon the sound was dancing along with the rumbling thunder. So this was what it came down to. He’d finally said that much out loud. True he’d often thought about it but to say it out loud had cemented it. A fact that he wasn’t sorry to revel in. The more he distanced himself the better off he would be. He wouldn’t have to deal with such betrayals again. And it was a betrayal wasn’t it? Ana’s death, and all those other little things he’d had to deal with. Betrayals. Wonderful wonderful little bitter betrayals.
The infirmary was near. Close enough that he could walk to it if wanted to. But he didn’t want to, not yet. Oh no, he still had one last question of his own. ”Tell me Calla, What made you think I actually cared? Am I not a heartless b*****d? One you are all too intent on killing?” Chuckling darkly he lightly tapped the she-wolf a slight signal for her to stop. He didn’t need to do that, Twilight knew him. Perhaps better than most people did or ever would. But what did he care? If they didn’t know him or understand him that was for the best. It would save him quite a bit of trouble later on anyway.
She’d been wrong. So very very wrong. WoodWhisp was her mate yes. But, his words were nothing more than that. Just words. Shaking her head, her thoughts were starting to mirror her rider’s. What did it matter anymore? She should have known better. She really should have known better than to put so much trust in one person. Wolf or otherwise. Sighing she merely moved away from Calla slowing as she neared the infirmary doors. ”Sometimes, some things should never be revealed, WoodWhisp…never.” Keeping her voice low she shook her head again and leaned close to the infirmary door to paw at it lightly.
”Her past may or may not come to light. Anyone’s past could come to light but that doesn’t mean it needs to.” She fell silent, head bowed as she allowed her rider to slide off, supporting his weight slightly. She’d lost faith in the other wolf. The one who she would call her mate. But could she even do such a thing now? Did she even have that right anymore? A quick shake of the head and she settled down once she was sure her bonded was in the more than capable hands of the infirmary’s doctors. They knew her so they wouldn’t bother her for laying around out here.

All Calla could do was shake her head. There were so many reasons she knew he was lying, so many reasons hidden in his voice and his stance and the way Twilight stiffened and tensed as she let him down. The only problem was trying to figure out which particular reason she should vocalize right now, which one wouldn't push him entirely over the edge. She knew the ground she stood upon was thing and crumbling, and wrong words would shatter it completely. He failed to understand her reasons for killing him had nothing to do with her personal thoughts of him. Had nothing to do with what he did or said. It was simple order of life, simply the way things had to be. But that was not the place to start, not now, not so soon after the conflict. "Because your still here Alister." She said simply, not allowing his dark chuckles to shake her will, or to break her voice, "You care about life, and you cared about her life specifically. Or these simple words would not affect you so much. You wouldn't have stayed here and continued the way you do. You have nothing keeping you here; you have no loyalty to duty, no one particularly close, you won't let anyone get close." The more she spoke the stronger her voice got. This was it, this was the point at which she would have to face him down, this was when she would finally win or lose. He would prove in this moment whether or not he could be honest with her, whether or not he would uphold his end of the deal and prove that he could be a father to her children, that he wouldn't harm her or them. Calla demanded little from those around her, but she did demand honesty. The worst thing you could do to her was lie.
WoodWhisp panicked as he felt Twilight pull away from him, feel the disappointment radiating from her. His thoughts scattered in that moment, and as he scrambled to pull them back together his entire frame drooped. His tail pressed into the grass and his ears pressed into his fur as though they didn't exist. He had failed, utterly and completely, and he couldn't even think of what to do that would redeem himself in her eyes. He would do anything for Twilight, but his beliefs were his beliefs, it felt wrong to lose someone that meant so much to him over something that seemed so small. But he knew what it would mean to him if Calla's past came out, he knew how much pain it would cause and what it could do to her. Not knowing her past was what made her into the memorable woman that was currently pressing Alister so hard. He vow to never forget again, never be forgotten again, was what had made her so solid and strong. If she knew the truth, knew how much she had been through as a child, know that her parents and those she had considered her family were dead, murdered in a drunken rage, it could break her. And he knew Calla had no right to press Alister as she was, grilling him on his past and forcing him to answer questions she couldn't answer herself. But he was in no power to stop her, she'd blocked out his protests completely and to even try to speak to her was a struggle. But he wouldn't lose Twilight over this, over the past. Calla's parents were murdered. It came out before he could stop it, Calla had blocked him out, she wouldn't hear anything, she had more pressing matters after all, Everyone she knew was murdered. The people she considered family. That's why she does this Twilight, she envies him. She envies that he still has a family and that he pushes them away. Do what you will with that love, but know I won't lie to you. If my time with Calla has taught me anything, it's that lies will cause no good.

’Mother broke you so long ago didn’t she?’
The voice that drifted through his mind wasn’t Calla’s or anywhere near to the tone that woman used. No, the voice belonged to someone that was dead and needed to remain that way, if only for his own sanity. Or at least for the tattered remains of it. But the voice was something more out of memory than any insane hallucination. Memories were just that though. Memories nothing more than fragments of the past. But he would indulge this one, just this sad little one.
’She broke you didn’t she? Or at least she tried to.’
It had been raining that day, raining and they’d both gotten stuck the under the little gazebo at the back of the school, though he had thought and still did that Ana had done it on purpose. The girl was notorious for driving her mother insane as far as being hard to find went. A little fact that always served to amuse him, however short lived that amusement had been. So Ana had called him ‘beautifully broken’ since he’d refused to answer her question. And now here he was, yet again being asked the same question but yet a different question all the same.
”In that line of thinking…you’re absolutely right. There is nothing holding me here.” He gave something of a shrug and was rewarded with a flare of pain from his shoulder. A flare which he gingerly ignored. ”I’ve no reason to stay here, nor do I have any reason to return to the city. Perhaps I should simply…toss myself to the centipedes when they come, no?” He didn’t wait for an answer though. Instead he disappeared inside following the ever fussy nurses. He was neither here nor there. Floating around in limbo he’d always wondered why he didn’t simply let the damnable beasts shred him every time they came. The answer to that was laying mere feet from the door. Twilight would never let him. Not willingly of course.
To say the black wolf had gone numb would be an understatement. Her front paws were crossed one over the other as she listened to WoodWhisp’s words but didn’t really process them. She didn’t want to. She honestly didn’t want to process them and get dragged out of this lovely pit of sorrow and bliss that she’d crawled into. She recoiled as the words were repeated in her head a dozen times or more. Murder had always been something Twilight saw a foolish and needless among the humans but sometimes she understood the forces that drove them to do it. Other times she didn’t. But then what was there to understand? After all did wolves not take the lives of others every time they hunted or fought amongst themselves?
The sound that slid from her throat was a wolfish mixture of amusement and sorrow. Envy? What was there to envy about her bonded’s family? She’d met the people personally, and in that brief week she’d hated them all. All but the one persistent girl that had followed Alister around and clung to him as if her life had depended on it. There is nothing to envy as far as they are concerned. No, they are more a nest of vipers than a family. That is why he pushes them away. Humans were strange creatures she had to admit but after spending all her life in their presence she understood the need for distance and she also understood why Alister shunned any such commitments. There was but one person, WoodWhisp. One person in that entire cursed family that hasn’t tried to kill him. And she’s dead, long dead and gone. So tell me now love, is it better to break someone’s heart with the truth or to tell a lie to save it all? The words came out more viciously than she’d intended them to but there was nothing that could be done for it.

Anger welled up again, deeper and rawer than it had before. This wasn't a joke to her anymore. But she had to choke it down, she couldn't, wouldn't make a scene in the infirmary, she had a deeper respect for the conditions the doctors worked in and the rest the patients needed. But that didn't mean she would let Alister get away with it, though he may not feel the full force of her wrath just yet he wouldn't escape her either. She charged in after him, the doctors and nurses left her be, she had come to work here on occasion before she met Alister, whenever the infirmary here was short and had asked for help. "But you won't Alister. Because to give up now, on what you do here every day, and to just die," Calla kept her voice a low hiss, she knew from firsthand experience how hard it was to sleep in the uncomfortable, unfamiliar infirmary and she didn't feel the need to wake anyone else just for the sake of her problems, "That would be an insult to her memory. That would have made her angrier than anything else." Though the words were quieter they still carried with them the same stern confidence that she had picked up since Alister had started to run from her. Because so long as he was running from her she knew she was right. But to have beaten him down like this, was it worth it just to be right? I'm not doing this to be right. I'm doing this because he's being ridiculous and petty. I'm doing this because the more he wallows in self pity the more he's insulting his cousin. I'm doing this to force him to be honest with me. Especially if he's going to live. They were bold words she was using to convince herself, but in the end they were only words. Words could never be trusted; she had learned that long ago, words could be warped and changed to mean whatever anyone wanted them to. It was the ultimate downfall of language.
Though WoodWhisp lay down beside his mate with his ears drawn back and his tail tucked tight around him, he wouldn’t give up his ideals. The truth Love. He insisted, his voice low and begging for forgiveness. Though he was just standing up for what he had always believed he still couldn't help but wish Twilight would forgive his words. The truth brings with it a chance to heal. A lie is only a brief escape from a reality that will catch up with you, one way or another. He closed his eyes and laid his head down on his paws, he didn't know how to make Twilight understand why Calla was acting the way she was. He understood why she was doing this, though he didn't condone it at least he could understand. Twilight could not, all she understood was the pain her Rider was feeling and Calla's unwavering determination. The words that would bring her to realize that Calla wasn't doing this just to be malicious were escaping him bit by bit. A sense of hopelessness was starting to settle in. His rider would not listen, his love was pushing him away, this storm did not seem like it was going to blow over as easily as he had hoped it would. Calla has this ideal idea of a family; she's never experienced anything that would tell her otherwise so that's what she believes. She doesn't understand how a family could be a bad thing to have, she can't understand the family Alister came from unless she actually meets them. And I don't think Alister would be interested in having that happen any time soon. He tacked the last bit on as a joke, an attempt to try and lighten the mood so he wouldn't feel so much like he was walking on eggshells. He didn't figure it would work, but it was worth a shot.

What did the woman want from him? Did she expect him to spill the darkest secrets of his soul to her? Oh no, there was only one other who knew such things and that was Twilight. And it would remain that way. Calla didn't deserve to know such things, afterall what had she caused him other than pain? Her words brought with them a flare of annoyance but it was just that. A flare, no he wouldn't humor her. He wouldn't even grace her with any sort of acknowledgement. Or that's what he'd intended to do until he heard the rest of those hissed words. The woman spoke as if she understood anything about Ana at all. No, Calla didn't know his cousin. She never would and yet here was. Speaking as if she knew anything about the girl. The flare returned this time as much more than a simple bit of annoyance. There was real anger there. White-hot and barely contained. Contained only for the fact that he remembered where he was. Maybe that was for the best. "You know absolutely nothing about her, so don't even dare to tell me that anything would be an insult to her." The words were a low hiss directed at the woman and the woman alone. He wouldn't let Calla get under his skin, even if he knew that she had already. Most of all he wasn't going to give the woman what she wanted. She was systematically breaking him apart and he wasn't going to give her the pleasure of seeing the deed done. He still had that much pride left, afterall. The ushering of the nurses into one of the back rooms was all to welcome, more so was the slient click as the door slid shut and they locked it. They meant to seperate the two of them and quite frankly he was glad they did. Calla had been after the truth, or whatever little twisted version of it she conceived to be the truth, and she hadn't gotten it. But she had managed to drag things that sould have remained in the past to the forefront. A deed that he utterly hated her for right now. Back pressed againt the door, he wasn't even aware of sliding down the polished wooden surface until he was on the floor.
Maybe that's all that's needed. A brief escape from reality until one is strong enough to face the truth of it all. Dulled eyes drifted over the near by wolf before they slid shut. Of course, she couldn't expect WoodWhisp or his rider to understand. They hadn't been there those first few weeks. Hadn't been forced to sit and watch as Alister all but ripped himself apart. For them, a lie was the greatest sin but no, not for her. Not for one who had seen what the truth could do. However twisted and cruel it seemed to be, it was never as wonderful as most made it out to be. Just like a lie, the truth is double edged. It can be used to heal or it can be used to destroy. Who was she trying to convince? WoodWhisp or herself? Tail curling around her body even tighter, she shuddered. There were no words to explain what she'd seen as far as the truth was concerned in situations such as this. Things like those had left her numbed, scarred and inches from the endless of abyss that was madness. If it hadn't been for the fact that she knew she couldn't give into such madness because Alister would be right behind her, she would have done so already. Madness and death were the final escapes from this cruel and twisted world. Even apathy for a moment's time couldn't erase the fact that one day one would have to return to face what they were running from.
Ideals of such grandeur are for the foolish, and even when they manage to be created they are just that foolish little notions. Shaking her head, she turned her glance skyward. The sky still rolled gray and ominious, flashes of lightning darting through the clouds ever so often. The rain was probably already falling in the city, she could smell it on the wind. How long until it reached the forts? How long until she can slink off and disappear among the buildings, a shapeless gray shadow? The rain was soothing, a calming balm for all this madness. Calla was going to dig too deeply and whatever truth she hoped to find would be lost, because she wouldn't get it. Not this way, and from the way things were turning out not anytime soon. She won't be given that chance WoodWhisp. Whatever bit of trust he had in her is gone. I do hope she's pleased with herself. Rising abruptly as the first wave of rain finally started to roll through. You can't break someone and hope for the truth. Not matter the cause or reason, shattering someone this much isn't and will never be worth it. It didn't take much for her to drift away from the infirmary and out into the pouring rain. Disappearing between the buildings and barracks was an easy enough task in itself. No one would pay attention to a wandering wolf when they were trying to hide from the rain. There was nothing she could do about the situation now, other than wait for her rider to drag back to his barracks. She'd piece him together as always, as shattered as Calla would leave him.

Calla wanted to rage at the man, wanted to throw something at him. But she knew that wouldn't help anything, and her location prevented such actions. "You're right Alister I don't. But I know about you. And I know anyone who could get past this b*****d you present to the world must have been a Saint." Calla spit the words as if they were poison on her lips. But before she could get much more out she the door had clicked closed in her face. She could have gotten in, she worked with the doctors during the summer to tend the injured and they most likely would have let her through. But she didn't want to follow. The envy and anger and frustration throbbed through her with each crack of thunder. And when the rain began to fall so did Calla. Resting against the door through which Alister had just disappeared and letting herself fall to floor. Why couldn't he understand? Why couldn't he let her understand? Why hadn't she been able to just shoot him dead like he deserved? Why had she ever thought this would be a good idea? Hands balled into first slammed against the ground in frustration. Why did her questions never have answers? A thousand why's danced through her head, each one singing the gentle lullaby of insanity, of oblivion. The very same questions and very same promises and very same anger she had felt so often as a recruit, before she had forced herself to push it all behind her. Everything bubbled to the surface now, forcing tears from her eyes and anger through her hands. But she wouldn't let him now. She would never let him now what he had caused her. She would never give him the pleasure of knowing how little she enjoyed this game and how much he had hurt her. This pain was all hers.
All the male could do was watch as Twilight slunk away from him. He wanted to move, wanted to chase after her and make her understand, but he was frozen to the spot. The icy drops of rain that fell around him did nothing but root him to the spot as she disappeared into the shadows. She isn't. They were the only words he could find, and even then they weren't very loud, he wasn't sure she'd even hear them. Would anyone be? WoodWhisp felt trapped, trapped and lost and alone for the first time in his life. He couldn't go after his mate and he couldn't follow his rider in to the infirmary. At a complete loss for everything he flopped down on the ground, letting the rain wash over him. His mind trailed back to the first day he'd met Twilight and her rider. It had all started with a simple game, a bit of fun to ease the boredom that winter brought. If he'd paid closer attention to where he was going they wouldn't be here right now, if he had only kept track of where he was they would have never ended up at White Shadow and their lives would have continued as they should have. In New Eve, with the rest of the crack pot riders there. Calla would never have met Alister and gotten the idea in her head that he was good for a bit of fun. But he would have never met Twilight. And that was a thought that scared him. Though as the situation stood maybe it would have been better that way, he would never have brought this chaos upon her and pushed her away. He would never have felt the numbing, detached, pain that coursed through his blood and left him feeling hopeless and lonely. If he had only paid attention.
