It's time for some mellophone questions!
(Note to mods: Feel free to move this topic after I get some questions answered.)

So, I bought a mellophone at a pawn shop for 60 dollars. (The guy really wanted to sell me a mello and a cornet for 100, but we settled on a mello for 60.)
The mello came with a trumpet mouthpiece, a Faxx 7C. (I also have a Blessing 7C)

Now: does the sound differ if I use a trumpet mouthpiece or a French horn mouthpiece? Because I have neither a horn mouthpiece nor a converter.
And, which trumpet mouthpiece should I use on mellophone, the Faxx or the Blessing?

you should probably use a Mellophone mouthpiece

Could the Faxx 7C be a mellophone mouthpiece? (I can't tell just by looking at it.)

I always just used a shallow trumpet mouthpiece. It worked the same for me.

But I want the French horn sound more than the trumpet sound... I own a trumpet for the trumpet sound. Would a shallow trumpet mouthpiece give me a French horn sound?

It's by preference really. I like resistance and the shallow mouthpieces gave me more, and more of a "mellow" but clear sound, no pun intended. But you're not going to get a REAL horn sound out of any mellophone, it's not designed totally for it. It's too direct. But even with a trumpet mouthpiece the sound still wont be as edgy as trumpet, and that's how it's suppose to be.

Honestly all I can tell you is experiment a little. But you could probably use both. Sorry I'm not much of a help D:

actually, the mello mouthpiece is deeper than a trumpet one, and gives it a richer sound. trumpet mouthpieces have more of an "airy" quality to them on mello
