»» See who I am Break through the surface ««Aliens aren’t real.
That’s what we’ve been lead to believe. Everyone tells us this. Our parents, our friends, the news, the general public - hell, even the government say they aren’t real. Even though we’re looking for life beyond our planet, we can’t believe that someone might come visit us. We know the reports and hoaxes. They say Roswell was a hoax. It was just made up by some attention-wanting men from New Mexico. There are people who say otherwise but do we really know the truth?
Will we ever find out?
Step into the life of [X] and you’ll find out.
[X] works for the government, as a security guard of sorts. He works at the Area 51 Base in Utah and guards a very special part of the facility. The laboratory. He’s not allowed inside the lab or anywhere near the holding tanks. All he has to do is stand there and make sure no one suspicious enters.
Well, one late night, while passing the doors of the laboratory, he hears a strange noise. Like, quiet sounds, as if someone was in there. Deciding to investigate, [X] enters the lab and starts searching around, looking for any disturbance. He finds nothing, except for blinking monitors, some notes, and a large table with straps. As he looks closer, those straps are torn, as if someone had ripped them.
Then, a noise - the sound of a glass breaking - comes from his right and he swings around, gun pointed towards the corner. There is a dark shape, huddled in the corner but [X] cannot see it clearly. [X] demands the person to come out of hiding or he’ll shoot. The dark figure hesitates but then slowly crawls out. [X] is surprised by what he sees.
The figure is a blue creature, naked and in the form of a human. It’s ears are shaped strangely, pointed at the ends and poking up from his black air. To top it all off, there are two, antenna-like things protruding from his head. The two stare at one another, both out of curiosity and fear. [X] tries talking to the creature, trying to figure out what he is. For a moment, the creature says nothing. But then, he utters softly,
“Help… please help…”
What will [X] do? Ignore this strange being and call for back up or will he try helping him? »» Let's show them that we can Free our minds and find a way ««

He didn‘t know how long he‘d been here. The last thing he remembered was being on the ship and then it hitting something. Or had they been struck? It was foggy now. Zanti and Tsu‘Teni were there… Zanti and Tsu‘Teni! Where were they!? They weren‘t… they were on the ship! He could remember. Zanti was piloting, trying to steady the ship and Tsu‘Teni had gone somewhere… to try and repair the break in. There was a hole or something in the side. Zanti was yelling about something…
After that, things became very patchy and blurry. Zanti and Tsu‘Teni were yelling and they were all holding onto something, bracing themselves for the crash. He never saw the crash. He much have blacked out upon impact. The next time he woke, he was in the hands of these pale-faces, these strange creatures he had only heard about.
Humans. They populated this planet Earth. What a strange species. They captured him, stripped him of his clothes, put him in a glass prison and observed him, as if he were some kind of animal. They spoke to him, asking him questions he couldn‘t understand. Then, when he wouldn‘t listen to them, they hurt him. They forced him down onto a cold slab and poked him with needles. Over and over again, always drawing more blood and writing down information. Jacan couldn‘t understand it. Why would they be interested in things like that? Because he was different?
Time passed and, slowly, he began to understand them. Or, at least their language. He could speak it now but he wouldn‘t allow these humans know this fact. If they did, there was no telling what they would do. More days passed and he still didn‘t see any signs of Zanti or Tsu‘Teni. Were they even here? Or had they been… had they been killed in the crash? Jacan hoped not. They were his comrades - his friends.
He had to find them. One night, after the humans left him strapped down to that cold table, Jacan broke decided it was the right time. He pulled hard on his bonds, using all his strength. The straps broke in no time. He got up but he found his legs were wobbly. It was like he had half the strength he once had. What had those humans been giving him? He wandered around the laboratory, going by the computers and he sat down. Perhaps if he tried working these devices, he could see if his comrades were here. However, as much as he tried, he couldn‘t get anywhere. A stupid window would come up and prevent him from accessing any information. In his frustration, Jacan hit the keys of the keyboard, growling at the screen. But, then he realized the noise he‘d made.
His head whipped around, his large black eyes landing on the door. There was silence at first but then a strange sound. Not taking any chances, Jacan leaped out of the chair and ducked behind the table.
It was a human and he was carrying a weapon. He looked different from the humans Jacan was used to, but that meant nothing. He could have been the same as them. Carefully, Jacan began creeping back, his eyes ever on the human as he watched him. Jacan kept himself low to the ground, just about crouching as he crawled back. His back his the leg of the table and he heard something roll off. A breaker hit the ground and shattered, making a noise that seemed loud in the otherwise quiet room. Jacan scrambled away from it but only managed to back himself into a corner. The human swings around, threatening him with that weapon and demanding he come out. Jacan hesitated, deciding to keep himself low to the ground. He was a bit frightened of this human but he was also curious. Very slowly, Jacan moved out, keeping himself in the crouched-position as he moved out of the dark corner and into the pale light. It lit up his blue skin, making it seem a little lighter than it normally was. It stood out more than the black and dark blue.
For a moment, nothing happened. Jacan stared up at the human curiously, wondering why he hadn’t fired his weapon or called for more humans. Maybe… maybe this was his chance. If he could gain it’s sympathy… He had to try.
His red tongue poked out as he licked his dry, blue lips and he looked up at the human. “Help… please help…” His words were soft and pleading, though the words were a little drawn out, as if he were having trouble pronouncing the words.

Standing at the door to the laboratory for hours, Mikhail glanced momentarily at the door that stood just behind his shoulder. For some reason, of all the doors in the facility, this was one of the few that they kept a live guard at no matter what time of the day or year it was. Unfortunately, he was one of the night guards, always had been. Although Mikhail enjoyed the pay and the solitude, it did get a little boring at times.
His employers had never told him specifically what he was guarding, just that it was high priority, possibly dangerous, and extremely sensitive. There were rumors, of course, that it was a laboratory for studying aliens that had been captured, but Mikhail never believed them. Never in his life had he been convinced that there could possibly be intelligent life on other planets. Surely if they ever did discover life on a different planet, it would be something simple like a bacterium or a plant. Maybe, if they were lucky, it would even be a small animal, but never anything as advanced as themselves.
After standing in near silence all night, Mikhail heard an odd noise from within. Staring contemplatively at the door, he debated whether or not he should go in. He only had permission to enter if it was necessary for him to keep a secure perimeter, but there had definitely been some kind of noise. Also, he was bored. Carefully, he opened the door and went into the darkness.
Flicking on his dim flashlight, Mikhail looked around, although there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary. However, he soon heard a crash, and whirled around, pointing his gun at the source. "Come out where I can see ya'!" he barked, trying to sound intimidating enough to frighten the intruder. It took a moment, and he almost considered going closer, but something slunk out from the darkness. Staring in disbelief, Mikhail wondered if he was hallucinating after such a long night.
It was a boy, thin, and completely naked. More than that, though, his skin was a bright blue that seemed to shimmer in the beam of his flashlight. The boy's jet black hair fell messily around his shoulders, and not only were his ears long and pointed, but he had strange antennae as well. Watching it closely, Mikhail waited to see if it would make the first move.
Watching it lick its lips, Mikhail raised his gun a bit more, but lowered it when he heard the strained words. Torn between his duty and his heart, Mikhail tried to make a compromise, keeping his gun pointed in the creature's general direction the entire time. "Well...what's your name?" he asked, still keeping a firm tone, although much of the harshness had been flushed out by the pitiful creature's pleading. It was obvious that the rumors had been true, but he had no idea how to handle it. "Show me your information. The scientists, they must have kept a file on you somewhere," he said, wanting to see what kinds of things the scientists had managed to figure out about it. Mikhail didn't want to find any surprises.

Indeed, Jacan was thin. Being kept here for so long, he had lost a bit of muscle, so his arms and legs were skinner than they used to be. He wasn‘t unhealthily thin, so the Mikhail wouldn‘t see his ribs too easily. His hair was sleek, but slightly messy from not being kept for so long. Though the human probably couldn‘t see them, Jacan had a pair of gills on each side of his neck. It was obvious he could also breathe oxygen, so he wasn‘t in any danger. Most of Jacan’s skin was light blue, but there were parts, such as his shoulders and upper arms, there were dark blue and black. The darker blue went across the bridge of his nose and around his eyes and lower brow. Black freckles were in the dark blue, dotting it and almost bringing it out more. Thick black lines were around the bottom of his eyes, branching out in to small curves. It almost looked like someone had drawn it with eyeliner.
Jacan stared at the human, looking at him up and down as if he were sizing him up. Or studying him. The human seemed bigger than him, bulkier. He was built like Tsu‘Teni. Tsu‘Teni was built sort of like this human.
The human spoke to him, asking for his name and information. Jacan‘s eyes shifted away from the human and onto the floor for a moment. He hadn‘t even told the other humans his name, but he hadn‘t spoke to them either. This was the first time he‘d spoke Human words to a human.
Jacan shifted his feet but kept in his crouched-like position as he looked up at the human again. “Jacan… I am Jacan.” He said, his words coming out a little clearer and more precise. He licked his lips again, his eyes shifting to the weapon and lighting device in the humans hands. The light sparked his curiosity and he wanted to touch it. Touch it, use it, take it apart and see how it worked. They had nothing like that on his planet. They had portable lights, yes, but none that looked like this one. The weapon, on the other hand, he did not want. Weapons were evil. They only brought destruction.
As the human spoke again, Jacan looked up at him. He wanted information, saying something about scientists. Was he talking about the other humans? Must have been. Yes, that seemed right. But this human was being overly friendly. How come only he could ask questions? It was Jacan who was the captive here!
Jacan shook his head, lifting his arm and pointing a slender finger at the human. “You tell me who you are first. I am the captive; you know me. I do not know you.” He stated, but he was not being rude or offensive about it. His tone was not pleading as it had been before but it was still soft.

Keeping his eyes trained directly on the strange boy at all times, Mikhail listened to him carefully, even though his words were clear enough for anyone to understand. It was actually impressive how well it spoke English, and Mikhail had to wonder just how long they'd been keeping it there against its will. Or at least, he assumed it was being kept their against its will. Although, it seemed as though the creature wasn't as frightened and vulnerable as he had first thought. It was still collected enough to speak properly, and it seemed to have a good grip on the situation. However, Mikhail wasn't going to judge too quickly one way or the other. He wanted to do what was right, but he had to figure out what that was, first.
"Okay, so...Jacan?" Mikhail repeated, wanting to be sure he didn't offend it by pronouncing its name poorly. "And you're a...male, right?" he asked awkwardly, realizing that he'd based his assumption entirely off of the fact that the thing had a flat chest. Because it was humanoid, Mikhail hoped that most common knowledge concerning humanoids in general would also be applicable to whatever species this thing was. After all, it looked like nothing he had ever seen before in his life. Luckily, with the way it was crouching, shadows conveniently kept it decent, although Mikhail was at least slightly curious about its gender. Even though he was no scientist, Mikhail was fairly certain he could figure out at least a few basic things about it just by looking at it. If it was intelligent enough to pick up a new language, then perhaps it was a moderately accurate analogue to humans.
The aim of his gun dropping a bit, Mikhail admitted, "I don't know much about anything around here, to tell you the truth. I'm not one of the scientists, I'm just a guard. The higher ups don't think that we need to know what we're guarding so long as we do our jobs right," he explained with some annoyance, although he couldn't tell for the life of him why he was telling all of this to a total stranger. "And as you said, you're the captive, so why should I be answering your questions?" Mikhail demanded after gathering his senses once more, leveling the aim of his gun towards the thing before him, just in case it attempted anything funny. Mikhail didn't want to be a fool; as much as he wanted to help this thing, he didn't want to be taken advantage of by it. He knew nothing about what was going on inside of that laboratory every day, let alone what this thing could do. He wasn't going to take too many chances.
Trying to simplify the situation for his own benefit, he asked, "So what do you need help with then? Are you thirsty?" The way it kept licking its lips reminded him of how it felt when his throat was completely dry and his lips began to crack. If it was something that simple, that the scientists had forgotten to give it some water before closing up for the night, then Mikhail would be able to deal with it on his own and get it back into its cage or whatever without anybody else having to know what had happened. Currently, no alarms had gone off, and none of the other guards had come by to check on things, so Mikhail knew he was the only one who was even aware of the situation, and the less fuss there was, the better. "Are you hurt?" he offered as well, not wanting to trivialize things if something was seriously wrong. Of course, if the thing was hurt, the only thing he could do would be to call for the scientists.

Jacan nodded his head once. "Jacan. Jacan Zecoss." He licked his lips again and he nodded his head again. "Yes... I am a boy." He said, shifting slightly. He kept himself mostly covered, though if it was on purpose, one couldn't tell. He'd been naked in front of these humans, the scientists, many times before. Being bare in front of another wasn't going to be bother him. Besides, now he had more things to worry about. Such as how to get out of here and find his comrades. He doubted this human knew anything about them. If he had, he would have called someone else in by now.
Jacan was glad when the human lowered his weapon. Those things made him nervous; he didn't like them. He knew what kind of destruction those things could do, and the lives they could destroy. 'A guard...' Like a sentry. Of course he wouldn't know of what was going on in here. The scientists like to keep their business private, which also explains why he was always knocked out whenever the humans moved him. They probably covered him up with something, keeping him hidden from others.
It was just when Jacan thought the human was beginning to be nice when he changed his mood. The male flinched back slightly when the weapon was directed at him once more. Having that thing there was unnerving and it showed. Shaking his head, Jacan looked up at the human, his thin brows drawn together as he shook his head. "I will not hurt you. I am peace. I promise." He said, bringing his hand back to bring it up, open palmed and facing the human. The human must think he was hostile, or being hostile. But Jacan was not like a Gvenyri; he would not harm anyone or anything unless he had to.
The being licked his dry lips again, his black eyes shifting up from the gun to the human's face. Thirsty? He nodded his head, his voice softer than it had been before, "Yes... thirsty." His mouth felt dry and uncomfortable while his throat felt a little sore. When was the last time he had had anything to drink? Or eat? He couldn't remember. The days were blurred and all he could remember were fear, pain, confusion, and frustration. He shook his head at the other question. Jacan glanced down at himself then looked up at the human once more before quickly checking himself out. His wrists felt a little raw from the straps and his arm was sore from the injections but, other than that, he was fine. "I am unharmed. But... I am thirsty. Please... can I have drink?"

Glancing around quickly and nervously, Mikhail's brow furrowed as he deliberated with himself on what to do. Just by speaking with this thing, he was risking so much. However, at that point, he had already wasted so much time, what difference would it make if he waited a little longer to return it to it's restraints? Sighing, he finally dropped his gun all the way and there was a distinct clicking sound as he flicked the safety on once more. Placing it back in its holster, he said, "Okay, I'll get you something to drink. But you have to do what I say, since I still can't really trust you. So...come here." walking closer, Mikhail reached down and took the being's upper arm gently, realizing that he could wrap his large hand around its arm completely. Wondering if the thing could actually stand at all, he gently lifted it by the arm until it seemed to be stable, hoping that it wouldn't be too clumsy.
Trying to discern the general layout of the lab as his eyes slowly began adjusting the the darkness, Mikhail tried to figure out where he would be able to get a drink for it. For all of the time he had worked at that facility as a guard, Mikhail had never actually been inside. It was amazing how large the building actually was on the inside, yet ever square inch was crammed with equipment and tanks, making it seem so claustrophobic and inhospitable. "I'm not sure where the sink is or anything...can you drink water?" he asked, frazzled. He knew that everything he was doing was against regulation and his training, but he didn't want to treat this thing badly. After all, it was probably far from home, being experimented on and held against its will with no hope of escape. Mikhail accepted with difficulty that he was probably the only human to have ever shown this thing any kindness, considering what most of the scientists there were like.
Leading the thing around the room by the arm, Mikhail searched for anything that might have a drink; a fridge with water bottles, a sink, even a bathtub. The only problem was that he couldn't tell the function of most of the things he did find. Above all else, he didn't want to disturb something that would tip people off to what he was doing, so he knew he would have to be careful even about what he touched. Finally, he found a water fountain, probably only for use by the scientists so that they wouldn't have to leave the room and take off their gloves and everything else just to have a sip of water. "Here," he said, holding down the small button on the side to make the water spout, "lean over this and drink as much as you want. Don't overdo it, though." Waiting for the creature to finish, Mikhail continued to filibuster in his mind with every single sensibility that he had.
One thing Mikhail had gained a new appreciation for was the paranoia shared by all of the scientists working there. Because it was such a secure facility and the work was so secret, the scientists wouldn't allow for security recording devices to exist inside of the lab, so MIkhail knew there were no cameras, and no chance of anyone finding out about what was happening with him and what he had finally been forced to admit to himself was an alien. The scientists always mumbled worriedly about people possibly finding out about what they were doing in there. Mikhail had heard them on a few occasions discussing it, although it wasn't until now that he understood what they were so nervous about. If the general public were to learn that aliens actually existed, Mikhail knew that they would not be so calm and kind as himself. "If that's all you need...I have to take you back to your cage now," he said uncertainly, wanting to get the thing back into the security of the lab as soon as possible. He didn't want to run the risk of having it escape his grasp.

Jacan felt relief wash over him when the human put away his weapon. Though, he didn't like the fact the human couldn't trust him. He'd already said he wasn't going to hurt him! Oh, but wait. If the situation was opposite, and it was Jacan who had the human, than could he say he would be able to trust the human? Probably not. They were so different from one another; it only made sense that the human couldn't trust him. Quite honestly, now that he thought about it, Jacan wasn't sure if he should trust the human either. After everything those other humans had done to him, why should he trust any human?
He flinched a little when the human grabbed him, expecting for him to nearly pull his arm from his socket. Imagine his surprise when the human only gently pulled him up. Jacan stood up with him, his legs feeling a bit stronger than they had been before. Perhaps all he needed was to move around a little.
He stood straight, lifting his head to look at the human. The human was taller than him; Jacan's head came up to the mid of the human's face. His hair was a strange color, almost silver-like but held blond in it as well. Though, it was his eyes that caught Jacan's attention the most. They were blue, a pretty dark blue that seemed to stand out a little more then the rest of his features. This human was not like the other ones. He seemed to be a bit different.
With a nod, he replied, "Yes... I can drink water." The other humans had already figured that out. There was water on his planet as well, though it tasted much better than this water. Jacan licked his lips again, trying to wet them with his saliva but he barely had any in his mouth. So much time had passed since he last had something to drink. And food. Oh he was so hungry. The humans had given him so little to eat during this horrible time. That was probably another reason why he was so much skinner now.
Jacan followed the human around the room, trailing beside him as he was tugged from place to place. Under the human's touch, Jacan's skin would feel smooth, very smooth with no evidence of hair. In fact, aside from his head, there was no other hair on Jacan's body. None on his arms, legs, chest, face, or genitals. His skin was smooth, but soft.
When the human finally led him to a fountain, he stood there for a moment, looking at it with curiosity. Until the human turned it on. His eyes widened slightly as water came out of the metal. Jacan stepped forward, leaning down slightly to inspect the water. His tongue flicked out, quickly tasting it. Satisfied that it was indeed water, Jacan leaned down and began to drink. It might have tasted funny but oh was it good. Jacan's eyes slipped closed and he made a little hum noise in his throat as he drank. His antennae began to emit a soft glow. It was not strong to light anything but it was noticeable.
When Jacan finally had his fill, he pulled back from the water. A few drops fell from his chin, though he lifted his other hand to wipe them from his face. When he heard the human say he had to take him back, Jacan looked up at him, his black eyes wide and his brows drawn together slightly in worry. "No... please you must help..." Hesitantly, he brought his other hand up and placed it on top of the human's. "I must find... friends... I need to know if they are alive."

Frowning in slight pain, Mikhail turned his face away from Jacan's, unable to look at the disappointment on his face. This boy obviously needed help, but what would Mikhail have to risk in order to do that? His job? Perhaps even his life? If it meant doing the right thing he was willing to go to great lengths, but how could he justify putting so much else on the line just to help this boy that he didn't even know very well? Who wasn't even human?
Looking back into the creature's eyes, Mikhail sighed again and shook his head, unable to bear having to break its heart even more. With everything it must have already gone through, Mikhail wondered how much more its heart could take before it gave out completely. As stupid as it sounded, there had been cases of humans dying of a broken heart before, mainly from starvation and suicide caused by depression. However, that didn't make the pain any less real. If he wanted to be able to live comfortably with himself, Mikhail knew what he had to do.
Squaring his shoulders, Mikhail did his best to think through things before saying anything. It was a delicate situation, and even though he didn't want to get himself into trouble, he really wanted to help this boy get out of trouble. Not only that, but he really needed a halfway decent place to live. The nurturer in Mikhail, despite how far down into him it was buried, would not let someone so helpless be neglected. For so long, he had spent all of his time either at work or sitting in his apartment alone, so he'd almost forgotten there was even a part of him that could even feel like that anymore. In his time both as a guard and as a single man, Mikhail had found that solitude could do that to a person.
Speaking to the boy with resolve, Mikhail asked, "Even if you somehow got out of here, where would you go? How would you survive? Especially at this time of year, do you know what the temperature is outside? You don't even have any clothes or fur to keep you warm. Even if you found food, you would probably freeze to death. I could help you...but you wouldn't survive long outside of these walls," he explained, hoping that the creature would reconsider. Even though it obviously wasn't in the best of care, Jacan was still alive, and that had to count for something. However, Mikhail knew he was no judge of how long that situation might continue. For all he knew, the scientists had already made plans to kill and dissect him the next day.
Looking over at the door again, Mikhail realized that it was slightly ajar. There was no moonlight filtering through because of the heavy cloud cover, but a few drifting flakes of snow had found their way inside, only to melt as they felt to the floor. It didn't worry him that the door had been open the entire time. In fact, it was refreshing to have some of the air from the outside waft in. For security reasons, only a single guard was allowed in a certain area during a single sift. For that reason, Mikhail was in no rush to make a decision. No one would come looking for either of them for about an hour or so unless something drastic happened.
Weighing his options, Mikhail gently let go of Jacan's arm, not wanting to restrain him anymore than he had to. Pulling his scarf slightly higher on his chin, he noticed that leaving the door open had allowed the cold to seep in. It didn't bother him terribly; he'd spent plenty of time in the past visiting relatives in Russia where the winters were some of the most frightening things he had ever seen. He'd spent a few holidays there, and always dreaded the trip, considering how dangerous it could be to travel in such weather.

Would this man even help him? Without someone's help, Jacan doubted he would ever be able to find Zanti or Tsu'Teni. He prayed they were okay. If they weren't... Jacan wasn't sure what he would do. They had been his friends for years, all through the years of schooling and training. Not only that, but they were like his family as well. Actually, Zanti was his cousin; the oldest child of his mother's sister. But, even if Tsu'Teni was not related to him by blood, Jacan looked up to him like a brother.
He had to know if they were alive and if they were even here. If they had survived the crash and escaped, there was a chance he could find them outside. But, he had to get out of here to do that. He couldn't do it alone either. He would need help from the inside to get out of here. This human was his only hope of escape.
Jacan stared up at the man, silently pleading for his help. Though, when the human began speaking, asking him the questions Jacan hadn't thought of yet, the boy looked away. As much as he hated to admit, the human was right. He was on a strange planet, one where it's inhabinets looked so different from him. No one here would take him in. They might kill him instead. He also had no clothes, no way of surviving outside of this place. If what the human said was true, than Jacan could very well freeze outside. He was used to a warmer climate and even this room felt a little cool to him. He perked up for just a second when he heard the man say "I could help you..." but that died away when he finished. It nearly brought tears to his eyes.
He wouldn't survive outside of this place. He could breathe the human's air and drink their water. He could even eat some of their food, but actually surviving? Jacan didn't know if he could. If he got out of here, how long could he go on on this strange place?
"You say... I will die outside." Jacan started slowly, bringing his arms closer to his body when the human released him. He turned his eyes up to the human, looking at him with those large, black orbs. "You say I can not live without clothing or fur, that your planet will kill me. But you do not understand. I must find Zanti and Tsu'Teni... I must find my comrades. I must know if they are alive... or not..." There was a spark of determination and pleading in his dark eyes as he looked at the human. It was clear he wasn't giving this up. He shivered suddenly, feeling colder air seep into the room. He folded his arms across his chest, holding himself as he shivered slightly. It felt like it has grown colder. "Help me find them... please... I must know what has become of them. If you can not take me away from here, please search your computer system for them. If your people have my friends, the computer would have logged it in, correct?"

Frowning at the boy's blind determination, Mikhail had to make yet another decision; to help him escape or to leave him there. It was obvious that the boy was going to do something about his situation when he got the chance, whether or not Mikhail helped him, but whether or not it would still turn out well was questionable. Not only were the scientists more content with a dead specimen than a live hazard, but the outside world would hold no prisoners from its hatred. People killed each other and themselves every day, every minute; what would stop any of them from killing Jacan?
Shaking his head, Mikhail tried to reason with himself to find someway out of the situation. The boy wasn't his problem, he was under no obligation to actually help him. What he'd done so far was out of kindness, but he would be stupid to go any farther than that. However, as soon as he looked into Jacan's eyes, he was completely at him mercy once more, unable to resist the puppy-dog look in his eyes. There was something oddly cute yet oddly respectable about the boy's stare; something that Mikhail liked.
Finally speaking, Mikhail stuttered, "A-All right...I'll help you. But there's no way for me to use the computers in here. I can hardly even use the one out in the guard station. All of them are password protected, and I'm sure the scientists are the only ones who have access to the computers in this lab. Even if I did manage to get on one, the keep automatic logs of who uses them, when, and for what. They would know exactly what I was doing, and how could I explain that? I'll keep my promise," he assured the boy, not wanting it to sound as though he was trying to weasel out, "but I'll only put myself in so much danger.
"You don't have to tell me how important it is to stay with your comrades," Mikhail said with a smile, remembering how precious the few friends he had were. "I don't want to have to leave you here, it could be dangerous," he continued, going off onto a completely different train of thought. "So...I'll help you escape. I'll tell you how to get out of here, and then you can meet me off-site, somewhere I can pick you up in my car without anyone noticing. The only problem is...I'll have to call the dogs on you. You should still be able to escape if you do what I say, but you'll have to move quickly.
"After that, I know how we might be able to get a mole into the system here. If all goes well, he'll be able to help us out in checking the system for your friends. I'm sure their records here are spot-on, so if they are around here, we'll know, and then we'll figure out how to help them as well. For the time being, though, I just want you to focus on yourself," Mikhail lectured, wanting to be sure that the first part of their plan worked before they attempted anything further.
Explaining an intricate system of holes in the area's defense, Mikhail gave Jacan exactly the directions he would need in order to escape from the facility. He also told the boy where they could meet up later; just below a billboard about a mile down the nearest road. "I'm sorry I can't give you anything to keep you warm, but you should be able to make it there without suffering too much, especially if you run fast enough and generate enough heat. Now...hurry and go. We have to get this started." Watching as Jacan dashed out the door, Mikhail stared after him forlornly, as he waited a full, precious minute before hitting the button for backup.

Did the human understand him? Jacan was determined to go through with this, even without the human's help. It would be more difficult without his help but he would do it. The consequences were meaningless at this point. All he wanted right now was to find his friends. He had to know if they were all right. As he'd stated before, they were his friends.
The glimmer of hope in his black eyes brightened and his antennae twitched as his lips spread into a small smile when the human agreed to help. Even though he was putting himself into danger, he would still help him. That made Jacan happy. For the first time since coming here, he smiled. That smile faded almost immediately when the human said he couldn't access the computers. That was a disappointment but it made sense. Of course a guard wouldn't have easy access to such important information.
He felt a bit more at ease that the human understood his need to find his friends. It seemed that humans also held attachments towards their comrades as well. That was something they had in common. Jacan was glad for that.
Jacan nodded, listening intently as the man began to explain what he should do. He committed every word to memory, repeating every direction in his head just for extra measure. He kept his arms around him, shivering lightly every now and then from the cold that was slowly seeping around him. The human said he had nothing to give him to protect him from the cold but Jacan figured he would be all right. He would have to concentrate more on breaking the barrier and running away from whatever came after him.
He turned, looking at the partly opened door and started towards it but then turned his head, looking at the human. "Thank you..." He flashed a small smile then turned and ran out of the door. The cold air hit him quickly, nearly taking his breath away. But he didn't stop. He kept going, ducking around corners and hugging the walls of the buildings. He had to get away from these buildings and find the gate. The human had told him a good way to get out, which would be through the hills. That was where he would go, then he would just follow the road until he found the billboard sign.
The moment Mikhail hit the button, alarms went up around the base. Guards rushed from their posts and dogs barked and yelped. Some came by the laboratory and, once they gathered information from Mikhail, a team went out after the escaped alien. The base seemed to come to life in a matter of seconds. The pursuers carried M16s, all dressed in military uniform. Some jumped into jeeps and trucks while others went on foot - all going out to chase down whatever creature had just broken out of laboratory. The orders were to shoot to injury - not kill. The scientists apparently wanted Jacan alive.

When backup arrived, Mikhail explained exactly what had happened, in his own terms. He'd heard a suspicious noise from inside of the lab, and so entered. He'd gone through all necessary procedures, checking the nearest corners before proceeding in further. At first it had seemed as though nothing was amiss, and Mikhail had to wonder if he was just hearing things after a long night on duty. Many men even braver than he had reported hearing and seeing strange things after spending too much time on watch, especially in such terrible weather.
Mikhail had almost called the cost clear and returned to his station without incident. However, something had slipped past him, knocking over a beaker on the way out. Just as he'd turned around and aimed his gun, Mikhail had seen a bright blue thing running out the door, which was when he'd called for backup. It was the best story he could come up with, but it seemed plausible enough to be accepted without much further question. Perhaps he would receive a scolding later from the general, but Mikhail was rather certain that neither he nor his job would be in any real danger, so long as everyone bought his story. After all, he had a spotless track record, so there was no reason for them to be suspicious.
Even after a fervent search, no one had managed to find the beast that had fled the laboratory. Mikhail had given them completely wrong information, telling them he'd dashed out the door and watched the creature escape in the exact opposite direction as he'd told Jacan to head. If all had gone well, the boy had already escaped the perimeter, and would be waiting at the meeting point any minute. After a few more questions, Mikhail was released; his shift was over, and it was time to head home for some well-deserved rest. No one blamed him for what had happened. Rather, they blamed the equipment in the lab and the men patrolling the gates.
Climbing into his truck, Mikhail waved to the gate guards as he did every night as he left, plowing easily through the snow with his old pickup truck. It wasn't very gas-efficient or pretty, but it got the job done, and that was all Mikhail was concerned about. When most of his life was devoted to working in an area that got less traffic than all of North Dakota, Mikhail had learned to give up many luxuries, and simply be content with having what he needed. Driving out to the spot he'd told Jacan about, Mikhail parked the car and honked the horn once, wondering where the boy could be. When he didn't show after a few minutes, Mikhail began to worry, and climbed out of the truck to look for him.
"Jacan!" he called through the wind and the snow, wanting to get the boy out of the freezing weather as soon as he could. If he failed to get Jacan out of the cold, it would likely only be a few hours before he froze to death, and all their efforts would be meaningless. The only thing he could think of was that maybe the boy had become too cold on his way there and couldn't make it. It wasn't very far, and Mikhail had thought the boy would at least make it to the site fine, but the weather had picked up some momentum since they'd last spoken. He could only pray that he was running a bit late and would wander through the curtain of snow any second.

The sound of snarling and barking came from behind him. He didn't know what those creatures were but they sounded vicious. Perhaps they were the dogs the human had mentioned. They must have guarded this place along with the humans. While they didn't sound big, Jacan wasn't going to chance it. He knew that if he stopped, they might catch up and capture him.
The bitter cold bit him, the wind chilling him to the bone. This was nothing like he had ever experienced. Then, the white substance falling from the blackened sky, sticking to the ground and blinding his vision. What was it? It fell like rain but it was lighter and so cold. If he had been in another situation, he might have stopped and inspected it closer. However, at this time, he was in too much of a hurry. The howls seemed to grow louder... or was that caused by the wind? He couldn't tell.
When he came to the hills, Jacan scrambled up one, running over the rocks that bit his feet. He nearly fell when the hill suddenly dropped and he ran down it, quickly finding a more solid, smoother surface. This must have been what the human had been talking about. It was a drainage line that was lightly guarded this time of year. Jacan ran through the tunnel, listening as the howls died down and only the sound of the water splashing met his ears. Jacan stopped running and he turned, long clouds of steam forming from his mouth and nose as he panted heavily. He hadn't ran like that in a long time. Normally, it would feel good to run like that but, with this cold, it just hurt.
Deciding it was not best to linger here long, Jacan turned and followed the drain pipe. He soon came to a metal fence that covered the exit. Even in his current state, he could easily break through it without a scratch. Once out, he carefully went around, looking out for any guards. He had to hide twice when he saw the lights of a vehicle coming his way. They were probably patrolling the fence-line. Once the coast was clear, Jacan stood and started off again. He walked quickly, though the wind and snow seemed to have increased which made travel difficult. He hugged himself as he walked, trying his best to keep warm and make it to the spot. He wasn't used to this kind of weather, not at all. Plus, with nothing to protect himself from the elements, it only made it worse.
He didn't know how long he wandered but he stayed close to the road and searched for the billboard the human had told him. Jacan only prayed the human hadn't tricked him. If he did, Jacan was sure he would die out here.
"Jacan!"
The blue, alien boy looked up from the ground and saw a light ahead. He thought he had heard his name. Yes, he had heard his name. It must be the human! Jacan moved a little quicker, heading towards the light. He stumbled a couple of time, feeling so cold but he was determined to make it.
"Illiuiors!" He called out to the human to gain his attention. It was in his own language that he spoke. Since he didn't know the human's name, he decided to call him something in his own tongue. Jacan approached the human, his arms hugging his body tightly and he shivered constantly.
