Charley Davis Snowing Rainbows Charley Davis Back in his sanctuary, the man enjoyed the hushed silence of his kitchen. There was a reason that he demanded his headquarters to be in the dungeons: easy access to the exits to transport ingredients and nobody really came by to distract him, not unless they were willing to aid him. "Oh, dear." Words escaped him like smoke after a drag. His carefully manicured hand jumped to cover his mouth as though trying to prevent the words taking on life after releasing a breath.
Richard remained stuck leaning against the marble counter. For support, the other hand exerted pressure down on the stone surface. Amongst the ingredients there laid: onions, garlic, eggs, soy milk, cilantro, two shots of Jack Daniels, three pounds of lean beef, cayenne peppers, apple cider vinegar, lemons, sea salt, teriyaki.
"I knew I forgot something," with that said, he took a shot of Jack Daniels and downed it. Regardless, much had to be done.
It was only a small detail, she probably wouldn't mind if he started without them. "First, before we can begin. Can't forget to wash all the ingredients," accustomed to a few faithful students or Solomon helping him -- Ricky would make it into a lesson. Water rushed, sleeves folded back, and so it began.
What would follow next (this bit isn't necessary to read); -To remove stems and caps from peppers and chop into 1 inch lengths -Place into a saucepan and add enough vinegar to just cover the peppers -Simmer covered for 30 minutes, until the peppers are extremely tender -Remove from heat and allow to cool -Place peppers and vinegar into a food processor and process until smooth -Taste on a starchy carb (corn chip, bread, rice) or a cucumber slice -Add sea salt for taste -Make tomato paste: it involved 24 large tomatoes, two teaspoons sea salt for taste, and olive oil -Next score a cross on the bottom of each tomato using a sharp knife. Blanch the tomatoes in boiling water, then drop into ice cold water. After this the tomato peel should almost fall off. Pull the remaining peel off the tomatoes. Cut the core out and remove all the seeds. Keep the peelings for making homemade stock and the seeds for adding into stews and whatever else. Chop the flesh and measure what you're left with which would normally be around 4 litres. Add ½ teaspoon of sea salt to each litre. Place the tomato and salt in a large pot and simmer over a low heat for around 1 hour, stiring often to prevent any catching and burning. Remove from the heat and press through a fine sieve. Return the tomatoes to the pot and continue to cook very slowly until the paste holds its shape on a spoon, approximately 2 to 3 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent any sticking.
When that was over with, spoons had to be dumped into hot sterilized jars, leaving 3cm (1 in) at the top. For the excess, slop on a little olive oil to cover and seal. Ensure the lids have vacuum sealed, or the paste will spoil. -Add tomato paste for sweetness as well as to temper the heat to his desired taste -Add lemon juice
And viola! Cayenne pepper sauce to give the three pounds of lean beef a haughty hint of spice. Afterwards, there would have to be preparation of the actual meat which didn't include making a single dish for today's lunch which had five different dishes on the menu each day OR the feast for the holidays.
(Here, we go. Enough about the actual laborious work) If only someone listened to his suggestion, it would be great of cooking was an actual elective! Imagine, all of the menial work being done by students. It was enough to make Richard stare into space with a spaced out grin."Excuse me." Mara stood at the door way, arms behind her back. "I was wondering if you would answer a few questions for the newspaper in Nanjing?" Her prissy voice vanished as she talked sweetly. "Hm?" An eyebrow raised, curious of who the visitor was. Glancing over his shoulder, he grinned in a very Cheshire fashion; purring, "Of course, you may." A devious twinkle gleamed as he added flippantly -
There, just as quickly his motive was revealed. "You came just in time, I was actually in need of a helper." And, so Richard continued washing off the peppers. Easily, the chef matched the honey laden words with his own subtle play. A favor for a favor mutually suited the both of them. What a lovely coincidence, the man thought to himself. "Oh...well...that sounds delightful." Mara smiled gently, and stashed her notepad and pen away. She strode over to where the Man was, and rolled up her long sleeved shirt, took off her scarf, and tied her short hair in a small ponytail. "What may I help with?" She knew she might not get an interview, but she kept her notepad and pen close by just in case.

Faint pink lips curled into a brilliant grin. Pearl white teeth revealed amongst semi-pronounced canines; "Thank you so much for volunteering~ just wash your hands so we can start" Richard continued on, "Been meaning to do this myself, but seeing how you're already here and willing, these peppers need their stems and caps removed." With a quick gesture, abruptly the stream of water paused for an intermittent amount of time.
The cutting board was already set with a knife. Scarlet Cayenne Peppers lounged idly in a festive bowl. Much of the fresh crops were washed, but alas twenty four tomatoes remained in the sink waiting to be cleansed. While, the rest of them lain on the counter waiting to be dealt with.
"Oh, where are my manners?" Suddenly, he recalled that he hadn't properly introduced himself! "Name's Richard Raver, but do call me Rick," his hand was offered for a quick hand shake, but had forgotten his hands were wet. Today, the man seemed to be an air head. An easy smile graced his sheepish countenance.
Now, that he thought about it. Her face seemed familiar. . . had he read one of her articles or perhaps seen her around town? There was something that caught his attention; those slate blue eyes of hers. They were somewhat obstructed from view by blonde locks.
Inwardly, Ricky sighed -- why couldn't he, too, have glasses?

"My name is Mara. Mara Beaulieu. 'Tis a pleasure to meet you Rick." Her slight French and British accents clashed silently, blending ever so well in her mouth. She began to p***k the stems from the peppers, humming a slight tune as she did so.

Perhaps, it was daring, but the man couldn't help himself! Honestly, the moment she turned her back to him and cooly sauntered over. . . well, his wandering eyes took advantage. Too much time has passed by since Rick had been graced by a woman's presence, not one of those hormonally infused babies that sported the bodies of ten year old boys with breasts. Ahem, the cook mentally cleared those thoughts. The point was. . . lost. Eck, the reporter was just about done!
Discreet, as always, Richard shifted gears. Melons, I could make do with some for dessert he thought to himself wistfully. Juicy, delectable Juan Canary Melons~ yum! A sappy grin formed, enthralled by the idea of biting into it. Goodness, food was just his guilty pleasure! Thankfully, he had Solo-dear to keep him in shape with all the running and death threats. Inside, one knew that Mr. Raver was snickering. That Mr. Lacramo just loved playing difficult. In fact, he also loved those cute little pet names.
Broken from his inward tangents, the chef returned to the present moment at hand. . . the same present that did not involve Juan Canary Melons. "The pleasure is all mine, Ms Beaulieu," rather smitten with the company.
Water ran cold, freezing in fact. Caught off guard by the fact ice cubes weren't forming yet, Ricky finished off with the tomatoes. "Alright, now." He had taken note that she was done with the assigned task, "You just need to chop the peppers into bits like so." Illustrating the precision necessary, each bit was just about an inch. Satisfied with the demonstration, he went off to heat up saucepan with ample vegetable oil.
"So, you had a few questions for me?" Grateful for the help, but also aware that she came down her for a reason -- Rick sparked the flames. "Aha," with a content grin, wordlessly jubilant that the oven wasn't being temperamental. The man glanced over the reporter's shoulder to monitor her progress;
"Great job." Earnest as he found his spot leaning against the counter, again. It was a terrible habit, but one that he enjoyed indulging.

His hasty movements indicated that this all was for something huge going on at the school. "Ahm, yes, I did in fact." She finished chopping up the peppers, and placed them to one side. "I was wondering if you could tell me a few things about this...lovely school, and some of it's staff. If you dont mind, that is." Her sweet voice held anticipation as she awaited his answer.

With ease, he turned about a quarter of a three hundred and sixty angle. Luckily, the saucepan was at the right temperature for the peppers. Now, that left the cook with the task of retrieving the vinegar oil. "Sure, what are you looking for?" If Richard was infamous for anything; it was for his ability to ramble, easily swayed by tangents. Luckily for Mara, the man was self aware of his own tendencies.
"Sweet, just in the nick of time." Collecting the peppers, they were deposited into the saucepan. Without wasting a single moment, the vinegar oil marinated the bits of the crimson fruit. "Have to keep the flame low, cover it, and continually check it for the next thirty minutes or so. Whenever the fruit is extremely tender is when it's time to kill the fire and let it cool off."
"So, yes. Anything in particular you wanted to know?" Lowering the flames to his satisfaction, he moved on to the next task at hand. The creation of the tomato paste, which was awesome. There was nothing like wielding a knife in the delicate art of culinary! Without a moment to spare, continued working; waiting for the reporter to elaborate.
Swift cross was scored on the bum of each of the bulbous tomatoes, after that would following the blanching of the twenty four fruit. Basically, a quick dip in boiling water -- which, he had forgotten to prepare! Oh, well; Richard thought to himself. "Could you do me the favor of filling pot with freezing water and ice?" Followed by him filling a pot with blistering hot water, boiling it with an ardent flames.
"Well~" After Mara's response, he delved into details.

She took some water from the filtered tap, and filled the pot, dropping some ice into it as well. "And a little something-something about you too, if you will." She flipped some of her lite blond hair out of her face.

ginger3a13 Saphire looked inside the kitchen and saw some other people as her stomach growled loudly. "Oh shut up" she mumbled as if her stomach actually could hear her. She smiled. "Hi." she walked over to the fridge and found some stuff to make a salad: lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, dressing, and cheese. You can not be in two places at once >.>

Akana was around the corner from the kitchen when clear voices and scents from her destination met her. She froze and considered going back to her dorm, where Mikana was sure to come looking for her later, but decided against it. If she found she was unable to ignore the people there she could always leave. Besides, she was hungry, and staying locked up in a room all day to protest being at the school wasn't going to help. Much to her pleasure, the people in the room were adults. Adults were fabulous at ignoring kids. Which meant she could eat and leave virtually undetected. Without looking at the two, she crossed over to a cabinet and pulled out a random bag, sniffing it slightly. It wasn't repulsive, but not the best either. She leaned against the counter, popped the bag open, and pulled out one of its strange contents, popping it into her mouth. All of this she did looking at the floor, hoping the adults wouldn't feel the urge to talk to her.

Requiem watched students pass from the kitchen looking into the hallway. Her lashes were long and casting shadows along her high cheekbones. She was lost without Mitsuki. Though she had watched the funeral, she couldn't bare to attend. It was so lonely here.

A drawer from one of the kitchen counters popped open all of a sudden. No force, neiather the wind nor a hand, seemed to have made it do such a thing. And the silverware inside was spotlessly clean.
