Why was it so cold now?...

Ebonystep was sitting near the exit of the camp. It was fairly early still, and somehow most of her clanmates were still asleep. Last night had been so unbearably cold to sleep through, but she had still been surprised to see the light layer of gleaming frost covering the forest floor. She had been born near the end of green-leaf, so it was a new experience to her.

She carefully tested the ground with one paw. It was cold, but when she lifted her foot, there was a pawprint where the frost used to be, and her paw was wet. Ebonystep promptly gave it a lick, and the cool water felt good on her tongue.

With a low yawn, Glacierfrost tumbled out of his bed, narrowly avoiding crashing into the cat sleeping next to him. He didn't dodge out of the way out of respect or anything, in fact, had he been a bit more alert that morning, he'd have woken someone up just for amusement, but that morning didn't feel right for causing a big ruckus. A small shudder worked its way down his spine. The air was still frosty from the remarkably cold night, steam forming in front of his face with every breath he took. Still, it didn't feel cold enough for snow. Pity, with his white fur, he blended in fairly well during winter.

Padding outside, he wondered if anyone else was up at this early hour. Had the morning patrol left yet? He paused as a lone, dark figure caught his attention. Ebonystep. His eyes traveled down to the thin layer of frost beneath his paws. Scooping some up expertly with his claws, making sure it didn't touch his fur long enough to melt, he flicked his paw and lobbed it towards the warrior, his eyes gleaming with mischief.

"Morning!" He called cheerfully, as though nothing had happened.

Ebonystep stood up as the cold... whatever it was touched her fur. "What the-- who's?" She wheeled around to see the white furred tom behind her with a look in his eyes she had often seen during their shared apprenticeship.

She tried to calm down a little; her tail fur had fluffed up a little. "Oh, hello Glacierfrost," she replied to the tom. Ebonystep twitched her shoulders to try and get the rest of the frost off of it.

"You're up early," Ebonystep said, with a little purr as she realized that she was as well. She licked her paw again and wiped it over her tail. She resisted a shiver when the cool air touched her wet paw.

Glacierfrost couldn't help but grin as Ebonystep almost jumped up. Looked like his aim was still as true as ever. His eyes sparkled as he fought the urge to chuckle lightly. He could see how the fur around her tail had risen a bit. As she shrugged the rest of the frost off her shoulders, he padded up closer and sat down nearby. "Good morning, Ebonystep."

He twitched his whiskers in amusement slightly, "So are you." He replied simply, noticing her suppressed shiver. "I couldn't sleep." He paused for a second, "Cold?"

Personally, he loved the snow. There were so many opportunities for a trick here or there, and it was so easy to creep up on people with his mostly white pelt. Too bad it was only a bit frosty. When the heavy snow set it he'd have a ball.

"Yes," she replied, "I thought leaf-fall was bad enough, but this is nearly unbearable."
She twitched her whiskers, "But you seem to be having fun enough." The tom always seemed to be up to some trick or another. They were generally amusing, unless you were the victim, but Ebonystep didn't mind to much.
Instinctively her fur fluffed up a bit to stop some of the cold from getting through. "It doesn't look like anyone else is up. The dawn patrol hasn't left yet."

With a grin, Glacierfrost scooped up some more frost with his claws, but did nothing with it, simply looked at it. "The cold bit isn't too fun, I'll admit, but I love the frost and snow." His tail twitched slightly in anticipation, "I can't wait for the heavy snowfalls. Now that'll be fun, more fun than I've had before."

"I'd say there's still a little while before sunrise." He nodded, his eyes moving from the now melted frost that had been on his paw to the setting moon. His paw dropped to the ground.

Noticing the way her fur was fluffed up, he hesitantly moved closer and pressed his side against hers. His fur had grown pretty thick recently, so the cold wasn't bothering him too much. He didn't say anything, just stayed still.

She let out a short purr of amusement, "You're name suits you well, then." Ebonystep still had yet to experience a full out snowfall, but she had seen it snowing before. The little flakes had been fun to watch, and it was also fun to try to catch some. If the little amount they had before was fun, she wondered how the heavy falls would be.

She watched the moon above her as it slowly started to fade, and almost didn't notice Glacierfrost when he sat against her. But she did feel the warmth of his body, and welcomed it with a purr.

Purring, Glacierfrost nodded slightly. "Well, mother probably knew one of us would love tricks, and I had a white pelt, so the name would have suited either way." Candleheart loved playing tricks just as much as he did, even though she was much more lighthearted. She'd been a great mother.

Feeling the slight vibration next to him, he almost thought Ebonystep was shivering again, only to realize all of a sudden that she was purring. He smiled slightly. His eyes turned upwards to look at the gradually lightening sky. Soon it would be awash in colors as the sun began to rise, but not quite just yet. His own purring grew louder.
