Has anyone here read the book? If so, what do you think?

It's a wonderful read and I LOVE Bradley's writing and imagery. Her conflict is interesting. And I can't deny that her focusing on the women's roles and having them as the actual maniuplators is both intriguging, unique, and very appealing to me. I'm not one for domination, but as the time period was so male dominated, I think it's nice to see at least a little feminine involvement, however fictionalized it may be.

I haven't read Mists of Avalon, but a friend gave me Ancestors of Avalon, and I didn't know it was the last of the series until I finished it. Even though it was the end of a long story, I understood it, and I loved it.

Yes, I'm glad you liked it. Personally, and I say this honestly, I found that Ancestors of Avalon could not even begin to compare to Mists. To be honest, my copy of AoA is a friend's, who decided she didn't like it as much as she liked Bradley's other books and gave it to me.

I think you should pick up MoA; if you liked the last book, you'll love this one.

It sounds so incredibly familiar...I don't remember if I have, but I'll check up on it.

I had to read it for a class. I'm in the the state where I liked it and loathed it at the same time. When I first started reading, I thought it was interesting, but then it got annoying, and then really really depressing. Nothing good happens to those people, and if it does, it doesn't last very long. Everybody in the class was pissed at that book, except for one who happened to love it.

I'm not saying it was a bad book. It was very well written and I learned A LOT from it. The characters just drove me crazy. For instance, I just wanted to wring Gwynwafar's neck! At first I found her beliefs fascinating, but she never changed! She just would not stop.

I like books that bring out strong emotions in me, but there's only so much that I can take.

Understandable yes. I personally liked Mists of Avalon not so much for the ending, but for the entirety of the books. Certainly nothing good happened to them, but that was somewhat real in that it showed there was suffering, and Arthur's court was not some fairy tale romance till the end...of course many novels do that...

Bradley does so with the woman and pagan angle more. Her other books are equally good..and if you'd like one with a relatively happier ending, I recommend "The Firebrand." I won't say it's 100% happy, but it's happier than MoA will ever be.

I read it in like 4th grade. I remember it being interesting in some parts and incredibly boring in most. I fought my way through into the 700s, and then the next Harry Potter book came out. I stopped reading it, and when I tried to pick it up again I could barely remember anything. I still do remember the part with Gawain ancestrey and that whole King Lot thing.

I think part of the reason I didn't enjoy it was because I was too young to comprehend most of it.

Gwynwafar! Omg, I remember that name. She was Gawain's mother, or sister, right? Wasn't she like really vain?

Nuh-uh, Gwynhyfar or however you spell her name was King Arthur's wife...her father was King Leodogranz, who gave Arthur the round table...she got into an affair with Lancelot after her marriage with Arthur.

If you have not, please do read The Once and Future King. I think it's the best King Arther tale ever written.

I've read it; it's really good, I agree, though for some reason I had trouble getting through parts of it. Which is odd; maybe I was reading sporadically or something. The ending to taht was just wonderful.

Yay, another fan. I was reading through a couple of her other novels, one about the dark ages, and one about the Greek times (the latter of which has nothing to do with Avalon) and I liked both of them. However, the former had a tendency to give the feeling of being jerked around a lot.

I started to read The Mists of Avalon, and I was really enjoying it. But, I got too busy w/other stuff and had to put it down....I ended up returning it to the library. But what I read was good.

Yeah; you definitely need a lot of time to get through it. But it's worth it. The Firebrand is shorter, if you'd like to read another Bradley book.
