So a friend of mine and myself had a rather interesting conversation the other day. The topic of which was steampunk movies, games ect., and he brought up the game Fallout 3 as we had played quite a bit that weekend. He thought that Fallout 3, based on the basic way its set, it's a steampunkish game. on some points I agreed with him, as it could be in some ways considered steampunk. As a good percentage of people here would know steampunk is the combonation of victorian era style with rather askew technology. Fallout is more of a mid 1930s-1940s with askew technology. I would like to know whether or not fallout 3, if not the entire fallout series, could be considered steampunk.

I'd say there are aspects of Steampunk but it is not a steampunk game.

Theres an awesome steampunk weapon called the Railway Rifle

It is considered Retro-futuristic. The alternate path of history where nuclear power is used for most things, so the cars all look spiffy XD. Funny thing about nuclear though, happened to be what caused the reality of the Fallout series. Steampunk? a few items here and there, but overall not so much. But yes, the Railway gun is most definitely steampunkish. It shoots out steam, and makes a choo-choo sound. Its quite a fun game.

Erereghgh... I wouldn't say Fallout was steampunk, due to the lack of steam involved. As others here have already aptly pointed out, it's more retro-futurist if you were going to call it anything. A delightful, nuclear powered 1950's stereotype vision of the future (and then the bombs dropped).

Having said that though, I can see why some people would consider it to be (very loosely) a steampunk game.
It shares many themes (alternate timelines, past-future visions of the world of tomorrow etc) if not much in the way of actual content (pocket watches, steam engines and so on).

So... It might fall into an amazon.com steampunk listing because it has that sort of vibe to it, but if you were looking for a specific steampunk adventure you would have to look elsewhere, like say, Arcanum.

But yes, Fallout is rather good isn't it? biggrin

No. It's Mad Max post apocalyptic with pulp fiction book elements.

Wow, I'm not the only person who has heard of this game.

haven't heard that game name in ages! o.o

Early this year Damnation came out, never played it but it apparently took pride in its steam influence. Sadly it didn't do so well in the reviews.

Arcanum is widely known in the steampunk side. I miss my Orc technologist...

Not Dieselpunk, as the main energy source in Fallout is Fuel Cells, Nuclear power and electricity.

Ahh, I haven't played it (still...), my bad. Just the 40's comment threw me off.

Nuclearpunk, then?

SO MANY PUNKS AH.

Could this be a new anachronistic fashion? Nuclearpunk? Where Retro styles of the 40's and 50's are used in a Post-apocalyptic setting? Greasers taken to a whole new level.

It is an anachronism I guess, though I wouldn't call it nuclearpunk. Fallout is it's own thing.
