It was a rather cold December morning. Watership Down was covered in puffy white snow. There was snow everywhere on the horizon. The scenery was so white it'd burn your eyes. Beneath the big white blanket there were many burrows, filled with many sleeping rabbits.
It was far too early for anyone to be awake at this hour. In a small and comfy burrow there were a beautiful white doe with 6 little fluffballs with their little bodies nestled in her warm and soft fur. One of the fluffballs moved a little bit, stretched and yawned. It was Pinehill- one of the litter's twins. The kitten made a few hops towards the exit of the burrow and stopped as the early morning's light but cold wind blew. The brown kitten shiverred and wondered if going out at a time like this would be a good idea. On the other hand, going back to his siblings might wake them up and he was pretty tired of all the silly games they kept playing. He wanted to rest. He wanted to be alone for a while and just enjoy the silence.
Silence. A thing that didn't come too often when you were one of 6 yelling and running kittens. As much as Pine wanted to rest his little head somewhere, he couldn't. With all the noise his siblings made. They kept following him everywhere. Just like they were glued to him.
He got out of the burrow without looking back again. It was really cold outside. The kitten shiverred again but decided it was too late to go back now. He had already made his way out now he had to go for a short walk because he didn't know when the next opportunity for one would come. He was slowly getting used to the snow and he even enjoyed playing with it. It was the best toy ever! White, cold and shape-shifting! He made a few short hops while his paws were getting used to the coldness of the snow and stopped. The view from the warren was beautiful- endless meadows covered in white snow. Pinehill was happy he could finally get away from his sibling for a little while. He had never noticed how beautiful the warren was before. Now he had the chance to investigate every little inch of its beauty without being interrupted by screams and shouts.

Ragwort might be a fully grown rabbit, but he was still a young adult and didn't remember last winters snow. This didn't mean he had never heard about the white stuff, but it was very different to hear about cold white snow in a story and to see it with his own eyes. And feel it. He stuck his nose down a small pile of snow and huffed, sending it flying. The white frosting left on his whiskers looked a bit silly, but the grey buck didn't know and didn't care.
Snow, glorious snow! Ragwort was bursting with energy and had to do something about it (or explode from pure joy). He jumped high in the ultimate expression of happiness and twisted in the air before hitting the snowy ground again. Ohhh... Jumping and landing in the snow was really fun!
"Wheeeee," he shouted and started running to get more speed before his next jump. Not that many rabbits were out and about, and Ragwort had fun so he wasn't concerned about how others would look at him.
Maybe one more high jump? Faster! Faster! Jump! Wheeee! Eeek! Kitten in landing area! Abort! Abort! Ragwort did his best to change direction mid-jump, and hoped that it would be enough, or that the kitten would have enough sense to get out of the way.
"Watch out," he yelled, hoping that the brown little kitten would hear him in time.

The air was cold but filled with this so familiar feeling for the season. Joy. Pine hadn't been around to sense it for himself last winter. He was only a kitten. But he was a really informed one. When storytellers or adults told their stories he always listened closely and was captured by all the adventures they'd been through. A couple of the stories he had heard were about winter and he was really eager to see this terrific season himself.
Yes, joy was in the air. Even though there was hardly anyone around, the kitten felt the feeling all around him. Pinehill closed his eyes and imagined all of the rabbits gathered together just having quiet and fun chit-chats and gossiping. He could almost see everyone being outside and smiling politely at each other nodding their heads as they were passing each otherby in complete silence. Yes, this was his ideal day. Silence. He took a deep breath. The air was cold and fresh. The warm air wasn't as fresh and as clear as this one. Besides, the kitten had a lot of fur that warmed him. Hewondered how those silly, bald creatures called men, storytellers had told him stories about felt like in winter.
The silence didn't last too long. It was broke by a yell "Watch out!" the kitten suddenly opened his eyes only to see that he was standing in the way of a giant grey blob which was about to fall on him. A pair of blue eyes widened with fear as the blob approached. It was just like everything was happening in slow motion. Pine was quick enough to decide that just sitting there shivering won't do him any good. The kitten shut his eyes and jumped as far as it could towards a direction to which his instinct led him.

Ragwort narrowly avoided crashing into the kitten and ended up diving headfirst into a large pile of snow instead. Fortunately it was soft and while his ears were filled with snow he wasn't hurt at all. A bit cold perhaps, but this snow thing was great for breaking falls.
"Nice reflexes," he said to the kitten as he started to shake the snow from his ears, "Sorry 'bout that!"
After some careful grooming to get the snow out of his fur he was as good as new again. It was a bit chilly but with all the jumping around he had done he barely felt the cold at all. In fact, he felt less cold and miserable than he had done on rainy, windy days late this autumn. Weird, but he wasn't complaining.
"Isn't this awesome," he asked, wiggling his nose excitedly and grinning at the brown kitten, "This is snow, and it's great!"
He made a grand sweeping motion with his paw, as if he was the proud inventor of snow. Apparently it didn't occur to him that the kitten would have heard the same stories he had, and probably knew about snow already.

Fortunately, Pinehill jumped off at the right time. He opened his big blue eyes, shivering with fear at the thought he might had not made it and saw that he was safe, left from the big grey blob which actually happened to be a buck. The kitten shook off some of the snow that was between his soft fur and stared at the grey buck. For an instants Pine thought this wouldn't had ended good for the poor grey guy but it looked like he was moving so the kitten calmed down.
"You should watch where you're landing, sir!" the brown kitten said looking up at the buck. ",and thank you!"
Pine just sat there looking curiously at the big buck. He was grooming himself. The kitten looked left, then looked right. There still weren't many rabbits around. Maybe that was a good time to try and get away from the buck and the possibility of a conversation which the kitten had never asked for. He was just about to make a leap when he heard the buck speak. Pinehill turned around to face the grey rabbit only to see a big grin on his face. "Oh, no! Not another one!" thought the brown kitten. All of the adults had this silly grin while talking to him... Why were they all smiling? Was there something wrong with him or was it what adults did while talking to little kittens?
"Ummm... yeah... I guess." he responded looking at his paws "But it's a bit cold, don't you think?"
Pine didn't actually want to have a chat with anyone but seeing that he couldn't get away or be left alone he had no choice. The gestures and faces the adult buck made got on Pinehill's nerves. He acted like he knew everything and treated him like a baby, without even knowing a single thing about him. "Hope you choke with that silly smile on!" Pine's thoughts were clear in his head while he was attempting a smile.

Being scolded by a small kitten was a first, but the little guy was right, of course. He should have watched where he was going. (But where was the fun in that?) Ragwort had no way of knowing what Pinehill was really thinking so he interpreted the kittens behaviour as shyness. Would he have minded had he known? Probably not. The buck was used to others regarding him as silly or berating him for not taking life very seriously.
"Cold?" Ragwort asked and plopped down on his side, upsetting a small puff of fine snow as he landed in a rather relaxed pose, "Nah."
Okay, perhaps a tiny bit cold when he wasn't moving but getting up at once would make him look stupid. He stretched out even more to show that he was really enjoying his little lie down in the (rather cold) snow. He looked around, only now realising that silflay would be a pain with all this white stuff covering everything. He didn't remember the stories storytellers used to tell about snow, and about the best way to find food in the winter, so he had no clue what to do except start digging to get to the frozen grass. Ugh... He'd have to work for it.
"Might be a bit tricky to get to the grass," he said, thinking aloud.
