Shofar blasts also precede this holiday.

-Customs include eating the Fish Head(Fish are prolific and that is a good blessing, also eating the head is symbolic of being the head and not the tail in the year to come, so to speak)and eating the Pomegranate(So many seeds, so many blessings).

-Parshat Vayera, specifically Akedat Yitzhak(the binding of Isaac) is typically read.

TEN DAYS OF AWE:
-The 10 days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

-It is customary to go around seeking forgiveness from those whom you have wronged in the past year.

YOM KIPPUR:

-A day of repetance and Judgement.
-We pray to be 'written in the book of Life' for the next year.

-All Jews of Bar Mitzvah age or older are required to fast all day as an act of self-denial.
The only exceptions are for health reasons, such as chronic hypogylcemia and pregnancy.

SIMCHAT TORAH:
-Literally "Joy of the Torah"

-The whole entire Torah scroll is unrolled and typically held out in a big circle from start to finish, with the congregation sitting in the middle of the circle.

SUKKOT:
-Literally "Booths."
-While wandering in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, the Israelites were nomads. They set up temporary booth homes, which they would dissemble and reassemble each day as they walked through the desert.

-To remember this, we set up booths like this on Sukkot. A Sukkah booth has 4 sides and must have 2 1/2 to 4 closed sides. It may not have a complete roof, as one should be able to see stars through it. The typical roof, made of long branches, is known as סכד
