In the world of Naruto there are 5 elements. Ninjas normally exhibit an affinity for using one or more elements. This seems to be genetic (as the Uchiha tended towards having an affinity for fire) but anomalies occur. When you make your character you will be given one affinity (allowing you to use techniques of that element) and you can train a second one when you become a Chunin and an advanced one when you become a Jounin.

Fire natured chakra allows for Fire Release ("Katon"), which is strong against Wind but weak against Water.

User Image
Water natured chakra allows for Water Release ("Suiton"), which is strong against Fire but weak against Earth. These techniques are diverse and powerful, but generally require a source of water to create.

User Image
Wind natured chakra allows for Wind Release ("Fūton"), which is strong against Lightning but weak against Fire. These techniques are "sharp" and often allow the user to aggressively "cut" the opponent down to size! They often hit in an area and can be effective as part of combos!

Lightning natured chakra allows for Lightning Release ("Raiton"), which is strong against Earth but weak against Wind. These techniques are probably the most high damaging. There are not a lot of low ranked techniques, but strong higher rank techniques. They are normally chakra intense and only last a brief instant.

Earth natured chakra allows for Earth Release ("Doton"), which is strong against Water but weak against Lightning. They are almost never directly offensive. They make great tools for defense and set ups. Their techniques tend to persist longer than other techniques.

Notes:
-You start off with one elemental affinity.
-You can learn a second once you become a chunin. (Like training a C-Rank jutsu)
-You can learn an advanced type as a jounin. (Like training a C-Rank jutsu)

I am open to allowing people who use/make an advance element some leeway in what they do.

Advanced Elements

In the series, we've seen a number of "advanced" elements. These are normally created by fusing two elements together to create a new one. To be used properly, this seems to require a special bloodline. (For example: Haku and ice, or a Senju and Wood)

If you do not have a bloodline that aids you in this, you can "mimic" it by literally using two techniques at once. This takes significantly more chakra and you only have access to a FEW techniques. If you are of the proper bloodline and you gain access to your advanced element- you rock the house with it!

Please keep in mind that you generally can't start off with your advanced element. (However, if you have a strong character concept that begs it- we might make an exception biggrin )

Alternate Options for Elemental Path Ninja

Kekkei Totā (Three Elemental Combination)
Recently (1/27/11) it came to light that there are "Kekkei totā" ("Bloodline Selection"). There are an advanced form of a kekkei genkai. The only known example is Dust Release, a combination of three different nature transformations (Earth + Wind + Fire).

If you want to do something like this you must be an elemental type.

You may forgo your "advanced element" at chunin rank to learn a 3rd element. You can then learn a Kekkei totā as a Jonin.

Learning All The Elements
You can start with 1 at genin.
You can learn one at genin.
You can learn one at chunin. (In place of an advanced element)
You can learn the rest at jonin. (In place of a Kekkei totā)
Unlock great things???
