Name: Jericho
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft: Fishercraft
Rank: Journeyman Ship Builder
Appearance: Jericho is tall (6'4”) and very tan, like most people who live by the water and spend a lot of time outdoors around it. He has honey golden hair that tumbles around his face in soft curls that drive young women simply mad. His eyes are bright blue like a tropic sea and framed by long lashes. His nose is long and aquiline, sitting above a pair of full lips and a strong chin with a square jaw. He is well muscled from working on the docks and from building ships. He not only does the paperwork for them, but the actual building as well, as part of his training.
Personality: He is a very kind man, and when in a social situation he tends to be a bit on the quiet and shy side, and is usually quiet and thoughtful even when not. When on a business level (such as directing people when building a ship) though he is quite forward and demanding, giving out orders easily and making sure things get done. This was very hard for him at first when he was an apprentice, but he soon learned to get over it, at least when it came to work, he still tends to clam up in social groups, especially if there are pretty girls involved. He tends to be at least slightly more at ease if its just a bunch of guys.
Most people he knows at Tillek admire his thoughtful quiet, liking that he is a man of few words, but one who knows how to get things done. In truth, Jericho is terrified of what these people would think of him if they knew his secret hobbies and his secret weakness for small cute things.
He is a very intelligent young man, as required of anyone who pursues a Ship Building apprenticeship. He is quite good at drawing ship designs and other architectural things, and is very good with math. He is also very good with his hands.
Jericho has the bad habit of clamming up around young women, and though he loves small cute animals, he is not very good with normal ones, such as riding beasts. He tends to expect too much of their intelligence and so he gets frustrated when they don't do what he wants, so he tends to just leave well enough alone. He also tends to lose track of time easily, and is late more often than not, except when it comes to work in the morning, he is rarely late for that. Though that it mostly because his mother takes it upon herself to send her firelizard to get him up and going and out the door on time. As with animals, Jer tends to lose his patience when people can't follow along with what he's talking about. He is very kind and usually has a lot of patience, but sometimes he just gets fed up with people and has to excuse himself to go hide away in his room and sew something. XD

Jericho grew up in Tillek amongst the many boats and fisherman, his own father, Barten, was the captain of the ship 'The Blue Dolphin'. His mother, Larina, worked mostly in the kitchens as a cook, working with many other women to keep everyone fed everyday. It was discovered very early on that Jericho got horrendously seasick every time he went out onto the water in a boat. He can tolerate it if in shallow water, or on a lake or river, but on the ocean he is completely useless. Needless to say, his father was extremely disappointed, but held out hope that by the time he was apprenticed, Jericho would have grown out of it. As it was, until then, the boy spent a lot of time mending nets and helping his mother in the kitchen. He had very fine boned, long fingered hands that made him very adept at the delicate work required for net mending and making. That could only entertain so long though, and so Jericho found himself searching out his mother, as there was little else to do besides boring dock work or fish cleaning that didn't involve being on the water. His mother allowed him to be roped in to the kitchen, and taught him everything she knew about cooking, and to his surprise, he really enjoyed it. She eventually taught him needle work as well, which he was a natural at after so much net work. He loved his mother dearly and treasured the time that they spent together making things. They kept his hobbies a secret though, just between the two of them.
Eventually, though, these happy times came to an end and at the age of 15, Jericho was apprenticed out to his father's own ship. For some years he had already been learning the basics about piloting ships, working the tides, map making, etc, but once he was out at sea, his seasickness reasserted itself with a vengeance. Jericho was left completely debilitated the entire outing, in fact, the ship had to turn around several days early to return to port because it soon became apparent that his life was at risk as he was unable to keep down any food or fluids. Barten sent the boy home, thoroughly ashamed that he had sired a son that would never be able to set foot on a proper ship, and never be able to follow in his foot steps.
So, for awhile, things went back the way they used to be with Jericho assisting his mother while he filled up the extra hours fixing nets and occasionally helping out on the docks. This lasted for about two months until Barten returned from a trading trip, only to come home and find his son doing woman's work. Needless to say, the captain was furious at both his son, for partaking of such feminine activities, and with his wife for supporting him in it. He immediately apprenticed Jericho to the ship builders, thinking that if the boy couldn't sail ships, he could at least make them. He kept a close eye on him after that, whenever he could, to make sure that he didn't relapse into his feminine habits. He strictly forbade Jericho from ever going into the kitchen again, or to pick up a sewing needle unless it was needed to repair nets.
Jericho was horrified by his father's reaction, and was extremely disappointed in himself for letting Barten down, feeling as though he had failed him as a son because he could not follow in his footsteps. He resolved to put aside his foolish hobbies and threw himself into his new apprenticeship with admirable vigor and determination, impressing his masters and quickly earning him their respect with his eagerness to learn and his dedication to his work. Eventually he found himself enjoying his work with the ship builders, and after a few years he even managed to advance to journeyman. Every once and awhile, though, on his days off, he would break down, and if his father were at sea, he would sneak into the kitchens to assist his mother with a bit of cooking, or help her catch up on her needle work. These happy moments were few and far between though, until Jericho finally reached the age of 20.
That was when the dragons came.
When he was searched out, Jericho was in complete shock, and hardly knew what to do. He loved his home and his parents, even if his father was a little overbearing, and he loved his work too. However, to go to the weyr with the dragon riders was a chance to get out from under his fathers thumb, to try something new and interesting...and so, at his mothers discreet urging, and under the weight of his father's once again disapproving frown, Jericho eagerly mounted the search dragon and was borne away to a new life and new experiences.

Gold Timepiece - Passed down to Jericho through his mother from his grandfather. It holds a lot of sentimental value for the man.

[[Posting this excerpt from the "A little buckle and swash" rp with Princess Feylin (rping Tanda) because I think it gives a pretty good look into how Jericho works. His answer is in response to her question as to what color dragon he hopes to impress.]]

Jericho vaguely remembered her having asked what color dragon he hoped to impress before, but didn't mind answering again, as he didn't really remember what answer he had given anyways.

"Well," he mused "I would be happy with any color...but then, I imagine that's the answer everyone gives when asked, and I guess it's probably not entirely true." He raised an eyebrow slightly, looking straight ahead, lost in thought for a moment before replying "Really, I think that at heart, everyone has a color they would truly prefer. I guess I would prefer a bronze, if I were given my choice. Like you said, a bronze would look amazing against this hair." he said, breaking his serious mood with a playful grin, but he soon banished it for a more thoughtful expression once more.

"In all seriousness, though, I think I would like a bronze. I know that a lot of responsibility comes with riding a metallic dragon, and I think I would like that. Not," he said, turning to look at her again to press his point "that I want one so I would be able to order other people around. That's not it at all. I've...always been pretty shy, on a social level anyways, but over the years I've managed to put that aside enough that I can at least work with people on a professional level. I had to, being a Journeyman in charge of ship building projects. I had to be able to direct people, and do it in such a way that they would do as I asked, and not question me because I was too meek for them to take me seriously..."

He frowned slightly, remembering how things had been for him early in his journeyman-ship. He had always been a quiet person by nature, more prone to being lost in thought than seeking out others company, and so it was not easy for Jericho to recommend himself to strangers. When he suddenly gained some power over people in the ship yard, and his master expected him to give orders to other workers, it had been hard for him. Eventually, though, he had set aside his normal reserve enough to develop a decent bellow and a business like manner that didn't allow for argument from the people under his watch.

"I mastered that in time, though, and was able to lead without being questioned, which is important when you're building something that will be carrying people and valuable cargo, and even little mistakes and lead to critical failure later in the building process. So, I think that with a bronze, I have some of the skills necessary for leadership already, but at the same time, I would have more expected of me at a social level as well. While I don't like the meet and greet parade that would no doubt be involved, I think it would be good for me." his brow furrowed slightly here as he went on "I hate not being able to really put myself out there for people sometimes. I wish I was more forward, I guess." he said with a small smile for his companion. "Maybe having a dragon that would expect things of me, and people in general expecting things of me, I would be able to work past that social awkwardness, just as I was able to work past my professional awkwardness."

Jericho certainly hoped this was so. He was usually okay in one on one scenarios, as long as it was the other person introduced themselves and did most of the talking at first, as Tanda had when they met. Once he got pulled into the conversation, and became more familiar with the person, he was generally quite friendly and open. In large groups though, he was always awkward, and if he talked at all, it was either very short sentences, or to one person in particular off to one side of the group. Having people expect things of him would, he was certain, help him past all that. He tried to do it himself, especially since moving here to the Weyr, but putting ones self out of their comfort zone was hard to do without some support or drive.

"Not," he abruptly added "that I would want a dragon as demanding as your brother's Sakneth." he laughed a bit "From the way you described him, I think that may be a bit more than I bargained for." he thought again and amended his statement slightly "Well, perhaps I could deal with it if the dragon were...more...kind, about it." He laughed and shook his head at himself "Listen to me go on. As if I really have any choice in the matter at all, and yet I have it all planned out." He laughed at himself then, at his own folly for hoping for something that he could never hope to bring about through any power of his own. In the end, if he impressed, it was all up to the dragon. And even if he didn't impress a bronze, surely he could still work to better himself no matter what the dragon's color. They would surely support him, no matter what.

That was all, of course, if he impressed at all.
