Derecho bounced along the pathway ahead of 'Aunt Meme' as she was affectionately called by the pups still small paws kicking up snow and occasionally sliding along the pathway in what he strived to make look intentional but what was really him slipping...which of course the independent pup would go to his grave denying.
"Can we go to the other side of the hill? I heard one of the other wolves say there were some huge snow drifts over there!" He called back over his shoulder as he hopped an icy patch on the trail "they said they were big enough to swallow a wolf whole..I think thats a lie, I want to see for myself" He declared firmly.

With slow lopes the beta followed at his heels, careful to place her paws upon the snow without losing control of her momentum. Merrill had been born in the mountains, so snow and ice were her forte, and her thick pelt protected her from the harsh climate. For a moment, she could kid hersef, that she was indeed back in her old home, with a father as stern as stone, elder twin brothers who nothing of the word "work", and a mother who barely was seen with her family as she often had to patrol the large territory as a beta herself; how much Merrill looked up to her as a pup!
"There are probably many snow drifts around now," she answered with a nod, cracking a smile as Derecho slid about. "I would guess that at least half of those could swallow a pup, so let's be a bit more careful. Si would have my head if you disappeared. Speaking of, where are the rest of you?" She tilted her head about, trying to catch a scent. Gamboling little weasles, honestly . . . "Think they were eaten yet? I might have to make you bait to lure the beasts out."

Aleu sat on the side of the trail just out of sight of Merrill. It wasn't often that the little pup was this adventurous, but something had got to her today to make her play this way. Perhaps it was the new fallen snow that got her spirits up and made her disobey the rules.
She watched the beta and her brother approach. It took all her concentration to not hum a merry little tune while waiting for them to pass by. It was so hard to not sing. There were so many new things to sing about, the snow, the cold. She had to focus.
Sinking her body closer to the earth she waiting until Merrill was right in front of her before pouncing at her. "Aunt Meme!" She cried out in her typical melodic voice.

Derecho hadn't known where his sister was or what she was up to - which was rather odd for him since he was typically so over protective...but Merrill was here and what creature would be foolish enough to try anything with her around? None that wanted to live long thats for sure he told himself firmly.
But his lack of knowledge about his sister's plan didn't stop him from taking advantage of it and when Aleu pounced out at her from the front Derecho who had been gamboling about her in a circle growled and pounced at the beta's tail as it swang by his snout "We're gonna get you!" He proclaimed with a puppy yap.

Funny how quickly a peaceful snow day could turn into a regular romp with pups. Merrill wasn't used to so much excitement and energy, and thus for a few moments she allowed Aleu and Derecho to overwhelm her, tiny fangs and claws and combined weight and all. Merrill never did understand where the "Aunt" part came from; Chivosi might call her an adopted sister, but the beta as usual went by unspoken rules on an aunt tehcnically only being of blood-relation . . . Well, not that she disliked being called "Auntie Meme" on the other paw. It was hard not to bend even her seriousness to fit the pups' needs sometimes.
"It seems the hills will have to wait; I'm already being consumed!" Merrill exclaimed, falling to her side with a minor thud as she got double-teamed. She nipped at their tails when they passed before her face, tail swinging furiously to knock them off as she scrabbled to get back up. "Away, beasts of misfortune!"

Aleu let out a scream of delight as Merrill flopped onto the ground under the combined attack of the siblings. She didn't often see the beta so....playful. It was nice. She would have to sing a song about this some day. The day Aunt Meme played. She giggled as Merrill bit at her tail and bounced around.
"Get her." She told her brother as she continued to pounce and then jump away to avoid Merrill's teach. Although she knew the Beta would never intentionally bite her.

Derecho didn't waste any time as Merrill fell to the ground, half giggling - half growling he pounced in an attempt to catch her wagging tail a near miss that got him thumped in the head and sent him tumbling into the snow on its return swing, undaunted he scrambled to his feet covered in snow and gamboled over to worry at the back of her ruff..which since this was Merrill meant he got a mouth full of fur a grip he lost when she gave a lurch to get to her feet, shrieking in glee as he tumbled into the snow he rolled to his feet look at Aleu.
"Run!" He told her "Its a monster!" and then he shot off down the trail as fast as his puppy legs could take him.

It actually felt sometimes like Derecho was trying to eat her, and thankfully he could not get a good hold on her scruff even when she shook too much. Merrill rumbled with a deep chuckle at their efforts; double-teaming still needed some work, she saw. "I am the monster now? What a little liar you are! Run if you can!" she barked at the pup as he fled, and with surprising reflexes made to pin his sister down by her tail with a paw. "If you intend to leave the minstrel behind, that is! Perhaps she will sing for my supper." Although it Derecho kept running, she would be obligated to follow, but for now she decided to see how the "hero" would act when his family was in danger.

Aleu squealed with excitement as her brother yelled and took off. Oh this was more fun than she thought it would be. "Monster!" She yelled and went to run after her brother. The hard packed snow under her paws wouldn't let her get any traction so she ended up running in place allowing Merrill to catch her by the tail.
A scream escape her maw when she felt the paw come down on her tail. "Derecho, help!" She cried out to her brother. "She's gonna eat me!" She fought hard to get out of Merrill's grasp but it was so hard with all the slippery snow under her.

Well Derecho certainly couldn't let his sister get eaten now could he? It was tempting at times sure..,but in his heart of hearts Derecho knew he could never let anything happen to his siblings and so when Merrill called out her challenge and Aleu yelled for help the little puppy put on the brakes, practically sitting on his rump in order to skid to whirling stop and look back at Merrill and Aleu.
As good as her word Merrill certainly had poor Aleu stuck fast..though his sibling was putting up a good fight "Fiend!" He yelled at Merrill before starting back towards them, but Merrill was quite a bit bigger and Derecho wasn't a stupid pup, he was pretty sure a head on strike wouldn't work so after growling at Merrill with a playful wag of his tail he leapt off the pathway once he got closer and after floundering through the deeper snow for a spell made his way around Merrill and Aleu and back onto the path where he lept at Merrill from behind...she couldn't keep hold of Aleu and fight him off at the same time could she?

Green eyes gleaming with something close to puppish mischievousness, Merrill watched Derecho's thoughts scroll through his expressions: some surprise, perhaps the tiniest of hesitations, followed by determination - ah, he was as easy as his father to read! Derecho wisely did not approach her with a frontal assault, and she turned her body to follow his path, the pawe firm on his sister's tail. "I believe it is time to take a little run, little minstrel," she said to Aleu with a slight yet crooked grin. Once her brother began to draw too near, she grasped her by the scruff of her neck and without warning loped away - just in time to avoid Derecho's brave leap. She did not move fast, knowing that the deep pockets of snow would be enough to slow Derecho down. A short distance away she tilted her head towards him, Aleu hanging in her jaws in a secure but not uncomfortable grip. Invisible brows lifted, questioning if h would dare follow.

Watching her brother turn to come back for her, she sighed a relief. Good he wouldn't just abandon her, not like she truly believed he would. For as mean as he could be at times he did show that he cared for his siblings. Aleu wasn't expecting Merrill to pick her up and carry her off as her brother came to her rescue. She wriggled her body as best she could to get away but the problem was Merrill had a pretty good grip on her. "She's taking me to her lair to eat me!" She called out to Derecho in her melodic voice, but it was hard to not smile, she did enjoy it when Merrill called her a little minstrel.

Derecho too wasn't expecting Merrill to pick his sister up and run off. Huh he thought to himself as what had been intended as his mastermind pounce of victory turned out to be him skidding across the ground with snow in his face while Merrill made easy tracks through the snow. Hadn't planned for that.
Well there didn't seem to be many options available... especially when Aleu chirpy voice called back to him. He certainly couldn't let his sister get eaten by Monster Merrill now could he? "Don't worry Aleu! I'll save you!" Derecho called out before dashing forward to follow the purple beta's path, hopping from pawprint to pawprint in the deeper parts and dashing as quick as his short legs would allow where the snow allowed.

Ah, it seemed he would not be shaken so easily! Not even by deep snow or frigid conditions, up against a winter monster or his babysitter. Aleutian was probably getting good material for a song right about now. When Merrill realized that the clever little male was simply hopping from pawprint to pawprint after her, she chuckled, her captive's body shaking slightly from the resulting tremors. It wasn't tactically wise to let her prisoner go just to face on the hero, but the beta had to remind herself that this was a game and that it would soon be best to just let them win - well, after a bit of struggle of course.
Pausing near the incline of a gently sloping snow-covered hill, Merrill plopped Aleu down - as if snow would contain her when it wouldn't her brother! - and turned to face the brave puppy. "Does the hero have a plan to slay the beast?" she asked, standing her full height to tower over the younglings. Thick fur, strong legs, confidence - it wouldn't be easy to take her down seemingly. "Only fools rush in!"

After being set down Aleu wondered for a minute if she should help her brother double team Merrill again or let him rescue him. It didn't take her long to pick playing a damsel in distress. She flopped onto her back in the snow, paws sticking up in the air and called out to her brother. "Oh help me, brave soul. For I am trapped in the monsters icy prison!"
She wiggled her body around a bit so that she could watch her hero come to her rescue. This would make a great story...and even better a great song one day. Her maw opened into a small smile at the thought.
