Macha stood at the mouth of the den she shared with Reaction, the pack mother had given her the morning off from training allowing her to do with the time as she wished. She frowned, slightly confused as what to do with her free time, Reaction rarely gave her time to train with HanGeng, let alone an morning solely to herself. She contemplated going to see if HanGeng was free until another idea struck her. She had heard two wolves that had been travelling together had decided to rest within the pack’s territory with Haku’s authority. Naturally curious Macha swung herself to face a direct path which would lead her to the spare dens for such guest and she took of at an excitable trot.

As Macha was an adolescent now, almost bordering upon adulthood, her attention span as a lot longer than it had been as a pup though it was still characteristically short and out of habit she found herself staring at various plants weighing up their medicinal purposes as she trotted by them. She shook her head and tried clearing it of such things, like HanGeng had taught her. Slowing her pace slightly she came upon the den area for visitors and she advanced respectfully, the wolves within would not be dangerous for Haku would never allow a wolf with ill intend to come into his territory, if spotted early enough on the boarders, let alone stay the night.

She did not enter the den she simply sat her rump down several paces outside the entrance and announced herself rather simply. ‘Hello.’

Triton was well aware of another approaching long before the teen plopped herself down on his doorstep - a observant habit he'd learned quickly during his time of wandering with Bryna - and so as she arrived the burly blue male was in the process of pulling himself out and stretching while he regarded her. Well she was certainly an interesting looking creature Triton thought to himself, her black pelt marked with streaks of blue and well he wasn't sure what that contraption on her was - but it seemed to suit her.

"Morning" He answered her greeting with a cheerful one of his own. He had yet to meet the other wolves of this pack but it didn't surprise him that a youth had been the first to approach - most were notoriously curious and this one seemed no different, that was fine with Triton however - he liked youths they were fresh faced and happy with the world still, unburdened for the most part with any of the terrible events that seemed to jade older wolves as life went on. "I'm Triton" He told her after a few moments ilence "May I ask your name?"

Upon gaining the large dark blue male's name she tilted her head to one side and stared at him with endless black eyes, firstly holding his gaze, he had friendly eyes which made her take an instant liking to the burly wolf and then her gaze wondered to observed his heavily muscled legs and large frame. His coat was thick and lush and upon her observation a frown began to form and as was usual with her words erupted from her maw before she'd really thought them though or considered upon how they may be taken by their target audience, 'Are you from another pack? My mother and father where lone wolves and they were pretty good hunters, from what I remember, but they could of never have kept themselves in as good a shape as yourself.' Her scrutinising stare focused back upon his deep blue eyes, they looked like the deepest part of the lake, near the waterfall, she thought to herself. Wondering then what hidden surprises could be found behind such eyes she carried on with her line of inquiry, taking a slight detour, 'Are you a good hunter?'

She paused for a moment, awaiting an answer when she suddenly remembered the simple question he'd asked her and with a shake of her shoulders, ruffling the crows feathers which were strapped in place, she puffed up her chest as she announced to Triton, 'I am Macha.'

Triton waited patiently for the young wolf to finish what appeared to be an inspection of him, other wolves wolves he knew might take offense at being so blatantly scrutinized but Triton was an amiable beast and generally didn't take offense to very many things - besides he rather liked the youths blunt ways, it got tiresome having to play conversational games with new wolves sometimes...each trying to ferret out information about the other in such a way as to give them the advantage. Triton didn't sense any such games from this female however - she seemed quite sure of where she stood and who she was. It was a refreshing change and Triton was pretty sure he could come to like this young wolf.

"I was with my home pack until a few seasons ago" He answered her question "Since then I have traveled with Bryna, we like to believe we do alright although the larger beasts were harder to obtain with only the two of us - we traveled through areas where smaller game was plenty" He continued, he wasn't a creature to brag and he certainly wouldn't have called himself a good hunter upon first leaving his pack but seasons of traveling had honed his skills and he was pretty sure no one would call him a slouch in the hunting department now. "These lands seem flush with both large and small game" He concluded, it was an observation he had made upon first entering the pack lands with Bryna and it was quite a bit different from other pack lands they had been too where often times either one creature or another was sparse or overly abundant.

"Well I am pleased to meet you Macha" She had said her parents had been lone wolves and Triton briefly wondered if they had joined the pack as well, but another part of her comment kept him voicing this question, it seemed a bit crass to do so if from what she remembered meant they were no longer with her

With the ‘Pleased to meet you’ Macha nodded her head in confirmation but she only seemed partly interested in the formal greeting passing between the two, such things did not interest her though Reaction repeatedly kept reminding her such etiquettes must be followed. Her interest was stolen with his observation about game and hunting. As Macha was still a young adolescent and Haku was still gathering wolves to his pack, hunting was minimal even with HanGeng and Haku taking on most of the responsibilities that would be in time passed to trusted members of the pack, their was only so much two males could do in a day. So Macha had yet to be taken on a hunt of any size, though HanGeng had briefly began to explain about the pack hunt and various prey, but it was still a very new subject to the female and thus she thirsted for every bit of knowledge she could get.

Forgetting about where he had come from and the question she wanted to ask regarding this and his companion she blurted out, ‘So your good at hunting, you must be. Are you staying here? Can you teach me how to hunt, teach me about the prey and…’ She bounced on her paws at this moment, excitement getting the better of herself and Reaction’s disapproving gaze flashed up in her mind and she clamed herself, though her tail still wagged madly from side to side and her endless black eyes still sparkled like the nights sky. Her voice a little calmer and slower she asked, ‘Do you and Bryna like it here so far, has Haku shown you around or introduced you to any of the pack members?’ Such things she knew Haku would only do with those that were intent on staying within the pack, his time was precious and he would not do this for simply travels passing through, only ensuring they were comfortable and passed through his lands within causing any trouble to his pack lands or the members of his family/pack. Even if Haku hadn’t shown them about, perhaps seeing more of the land would convience the two wolves to stay and Macha could learn how to hunt sooner, plus it would earn brownie points with Haku for carrying out some responsibilities within the pack.

It seemed to Triton that something in his comments had garnered the youths attention, and he didn't have to wait long to find out what that had been since with the typical nature of the young she blurted it out nearly as soon as she thought of it. The blue male chuckled slightly at her obvious excitement as she bounced on her paws and continued on with her questions, tail wagging so furiously he thought for a moment that it might propel her very body from side to side.

He hesitated however at her question, could he teach her to hunt? well yes.. technically speaking he supposed he could, but was it really his place? Would the pack disapprove of such a thing or see it as 'taking the initiative'. they did barely no him. But she was so eager and he had been attempting to think of a way to help out, taking Macha out and perhaps giving her some tips might be a good way to repay the packs kindness towards himself and Bryna.

"We like it here just fine" He assured the young female, choosing a random question to start answering the flurry of them she had thrown his way "And no we haven't had the chance to meet any of the others yet, Haku is no doubt busy" He continued before standing and with a little shake starting off towards the woods nearby, casting a glance over his shoulder to see if the wolfess was following. "It is important to be calm while hunting" He called back over his shoulder "or you'll startle the prey off before we get close enough to do more then glimpse them in the distance"

Macha beamed up at him, a distant sparkle appearing in her endless black eyes, so he liked it here, she hoped he stayed after having taken an instant liking to the large blue male. When he continued, she opened her month to answer him, about to declare that she would show him about but before she could the male had turned about on her and began walking off, still talking to her. Naturally inquisitive she followed the male obediently, her ears pricked to catch his words. As he spoke of hunting and prey she quickened her pace excitedly and trotted along at his side.

She peered up at the male over her shoulder, absorbing his words and then a small frown came over her face, exhaling slowly she tried to clam herself in the same manner HanGeng had taught her too during all his lessons. She did not question as to why the male had so quickly taken her up on her desire for a lesson, worrying he might suddenly decide to change his mind. In stead she showed her interest by declaring what little knowledge she had, in overly cautious hushed tones not wanting to scare off any possible prey animals, ‘HanGeng always says we must learn to hunt together as a pack, that way we can take down prey more effectively but it’s not in our nature to do that. Why?’

Well at least she was listening, Triton thought to himself as Macha asked her question in tones he associated with his pup hood - it was the same hushed whisper he and his brothers had used when they were supposed to be sleeping and didn't want their parents to hear. Though if the blue wolf was honest with himself he hadn't expected anything less of the wolfess, she was young yes...but Triton pegged her for one who would go far in life.

Turning his attention back to the question Triton furrowed his brow for a few moments in thought before answering - he suspected there were many possible answers to this particular question, but the one he believed most responsible for the typical chaos of most pack hunts was instinct. It was simply hard to think tactically when caught up in the thrill of the hunt, with the adrenaline and the competitiveness flowing through one's veins. But ho to explain such a thing? Pausing he half turned so that he could look at her more fully "Think now about how excited you are right now...with the prospect of a hunt - the anticipation and eager nerves, consider then how competitive most wolves are ..even the lowest ranking want to prove themselves in the eyes of their peers. Add all of that together and throw in a wild chase in the woods and a handful of others racing alongside you, adrenaline in their blood, anticipation for the kill practically rolling in the wind...." Triton paused to let the young wolf paint this mental picture, she might not have been taken on a full fledged hunt quite et, but she had almost certainly at least seen one and hunted small game on her own. Most teens knew well the thrill of the hunt by now.

When Triton thought she'd had time to paint herself a mental scene he continued "Is it any wonder then that most wolves give into the thrill and the chase and scents on the wind? It is our instinctual reaction to chase and hunt and compete - part of natures plan to make sure only the strongest of us survive to have pups and so pass on strong blood, and it is a good plan - it works for the most part. But it could be better and the hunts success rate would be higher if we worked together rather then simply giving into our own wanton desires, I have not met your HenGeng..but he sounds like a wise wolf"

Macha often found it hard to take in large chunks of information, HenGeng had noticed this and he seemed to tell her something and then act it out and then tell her a little more, where as Reaction had a tendency to go on and on at her in which case she often found her mind wondering which had cost her dearly once or twice when Reaction had questioned her and she did not know the answer even when Reaction insured her that she had told her the answer only moments ago. She just about managed to take in Triton's words, mainly because it interested her but also because he considered his words briefly after each sentence, allowing her a little time to focus, absorb and prepare for the next set of words. She was getting better as she was getting older she noticed, her attention span growing and for this she was thank for, for numerous reason but also to prevent Reaction glaring at her in that disapproving manner.

She silently considered Triton's words for a moment as she kept pace easily with him, not totally focused upon where they were going, more so trusting her new teacher. After a short while she replied, 'I can understand all of that but then what about those with a strong mind rather than a strong body, what if they aren't as swift as the others or slightly weaker, why should that talent be lost for they are then less likely to attract a mate...' her words trailed off then.

Macha had nearly forgotten her meeting with Haku only a few days ago and HanGeng's words still haunted her, that he believed Haku had feelings for her. Macha didn't understand anything of the heart and she still didn't even after HanGeng had told her to think upon it. Maybe Haku thought she was strong, saw her eagerness to learn and that's why he liked her, that she'd make a good mate. She shook her head to try and clear her mind of such thoughts, she wanted to learn how to hunt right now, not think about Haku.

She tried a different line of conversation as she made another point, 'HanGeng taught me to clear my mind while training, he says you can see better, perhaps that would be a better idea when a pack of wolves hunt.' She frown up at Triton slightly remembering how hard that was to learn though and wondering if she could even do it for that length of time. The frown disappeared as she informed her blue coated teacher who her trainer was, 'HanGeng is the Beta male, perhaps you'll meet him if you decided to stay.' She looked at him with a hopefully sparkle once again present in her endless black eyes.

Macha was smart, Triton would give her that, and at least she considered her words before speaking, thought things through rather then merely blurting out the first thing that came to mind. It was a good sign of a maturing mind. "Well" He started with a slight smile "That would be the part where we can make natures plan better. Some wolves might not have the strength and speed to tackle large prey head on - like you said...but those wolves are often better tactically, they are sneakier, they use the environment around them more, rely more on their brains then their brawn..and well, having known a few wolves like that in my lifetime I can tell you those brainy wolves are generally pretty good at capturing mates with poetic words and charismatic gestures" He concluded with a slight chuckle.

"But...that is not the point I was trying to make, and you certainly shouldn't fall for someone simply because they hunt ell or because they spout pretty words at you" The male hurried on, worried that the young female might take some of these things to heart. Young wolves were malleable and Triton certainly didn't want to be blamed if anything he said happened to skew her viewpoints on love. Especially since said viewpoints were probably the packs viewpoints and Triton was not familiar about how this pack handled such things yet. He cleared his throat. "anyways..we are both in agreement then that Smart wolves and strong wolves are worth keeping around, even though they might use different tactics to survive and thrive, so you are right neither talent should be lost and both should be nurtured in a pack. It wouldn't do us much good if we lived in a pack full of slobbering dimwitted brutes would it? Or a pack of brainiacs that could get overthrown by some neighboring pack. Balance is the key I think, and there is perhaps the answer - to make natures plan better we all need to learn how to balance our instincts with our brains."

He paused for a few moments as she spoke once more of this HanGeng character, he had a feeling she spent quite a bit of time with the Beta, but she also mentioned training, so that must be the reason for the time spent together. "I would like to meet him" He told the young wolf before continuing "And perhaps..once we find some game you can test this 'mind clearing' theory of yours and see how it works."

Macha struggled to take in such a large piece of information but she managed and progressed it and smiled. Proud with herself for begin about to take it all in and make sense of it but also to have found a wolf that seem to know such a great deal, in her opinion anyway and one that seemed to enjoy teaching other. Macha looked up at the large blue wolf over her shoulder and nodded to him in agreement, 'Your right.' She said simply and smiled before casting her gaze back out over the landscape in front of her.

The denning area was on a hillside that sloped harshly in places before easing into the base of the valley where the river flowed, but before the river was a large dense area of forest, ripe in various types in game. Macha knew they had left the denning area a fair way behind them now during their conversation and indistinctly slowed her pace as to try and let her senses catch and prey in the surround area. She had only really hunted small to medium prey and even then those experiences were few and far between so now she looked up at her hunting partner and tutor trying to gauge if he sensed anything beyond her range of experience.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 29, 2010 3:14 pm

As they entered the denser woods and Triton judged they were a fair distance from the dens - though he was not yet familiar enough with the land to make more then a decent estimate - the dark blue wolf took notice of Macha's change of attitude and posture. It seemed they had indeed entered one of the packs hunting grounds. Pausing to scent the air Triton let his eyes wander through the woods for any signs of possible prey. Nothing to big he reminded himself...but nothing a simple as a rabbit either. The scent of water trickled in from somewhere not to far away - ducks..he had hunted ducks quite often with Bryna and there was a fair bit of tactics involved int he process. Perhaps that would make a decent lesson and if they were lucky..perhaps they would even find a nice fat goose instead.

Flicking an ear he turned off towards the water as a good pace, slowing to a silent walk as they got closer, pausing every now and then to scent the air. To hunt duck or geese of course first they would have to find them

Macha stalked her newly appointed teacher silently and obediently but as they progressed through the hunting grounds of the forest Macha began to wonder what it was Triton was looking for. The faint refreshing smell of water was starting to enter her nostrils and she knew then that they were drawing close to the river. They were running out of forest to hunt in before it cleared to form the grassy verge between the forests edge and the river bank.

A frown formed upon the young hunters head in confusion and a slight dose of annoyance. Was their not any prey about in the forest, even though she knew the hunt grounds where managed by HanGeng and Haku at present she did not doubt there was a depleted level of game in the area. She could not hold pack her urge to question the adult any more and looked up, slightly over her shower at him and questioned softly, 'What is it we are going to be hunting?'
PostPosted: Thu Feb 11, 2010 4:30 am

Triton paused as his scenting finally granted some measure of success, ducks - he could definitely smell them and lowering himself to the ground he turned to look at Macha whose puzzled question gave him just a tinge of amusement thought he didn't show it - couldn't have the young wolfess think he was laughing at her. He would answer her questions here - before they got any closer. "Ducks" He told her simply motioning with his muzzle towards a small clump of grass and underbush alongside the water. "Do you wish to be the flusher or the catcher?" He asked "To hunt ducks easily requires two wolves one to sneak up on their roosting place and flush them in the proper direction - not over the water - and a catcher who lays in wait for his or her partner to scare the birds in their direction. Both must sneak quite close, ducks are skittish and they make for the air quickly, both must be in pace before acting and the catcher must be quick or the birds will rise out of reach"

Macha followed suit and lowered herself to the ground also, shuffling along one her belly her forelegs pulling her up to come to rest with her head level to her tutors head. She looked at him sideways as he informed her that they were hunting ducks. Her eyes widened slightly and then narrowed with focus once again as she stared forwards though the last few trees of the forest before they cleared to give way to now dead reeds laden heavy with snow. Ducks! Macha had a small collection of raven's feather adorning her back which Madhuri's two leggers had dressed her with though it was herself that had caught the ravens, alone and they had been alive. Granted it had taken sometime and had been an unconventional method but then Macha often had a strange way of looking at things though essentially very practically.

They way Triton planned to catch the ducks could work but they would have to work together, something they had discussed only moments ago did not come naturally to wolves. She wondered if he'd hunted this way before or if this was new to him as well, wondering if the large wolf was trying out a plan that could place him in some respect with HanGeng and Haku. Either way Macha was game, always eager to learn and gain experiences. She weighted up the possibilities, Macha was smaller and therefore would find it easier to get closer to the ducks though the limited cover of the reeds but the same respect she though, being more lithe she'd be the one able to jump higher and capture the birds. Macha did not like the idea of getting this wrong, of letting her friendly tutor down and their were more elements to go wrong for the flusher rather than the catcher.

She therefore concluded that it'd be better for the more experienced of the pair to flush the birds, all she'd have to do was to get into a suitable place and bring them down out of the sky, before they became out of reach. 'I'll catch.' She said simply, and nodding curtly she waited for further instructions, now totally focused on the coming hunt.
