I've always been kind of confused about what the phrase "chosen people" means. What does it mean to be the "chosen people?" Is it a positive thing to be or a negative thing to be or both? Do Jewish people today view themselves as such, or is it more of a historical or biblical view?

You know, God's people.
And I still see Jews calling themselves chosen people, sooooo... I believe it's still used.

Christians have their own term, also. Well, at least the Calvinists. We call ourselves the elect.

If I'm not mistaken, its a reference to God's covenant with Abraham, where the ten commandments came from. Abraham's descendants would number as many as the stars, and would be favored by God. That's where he chose them.

Why do people not google these kinds of things?

That would be too easy.

Yeah, my bad, that was Moses.

It is mention about Abraham as well, in the passages about Sodom and Gomorrah, Genesis 18:19. Both Genesis and Exodus predate Deuteronomy.

So, the only thing I still confused about is why God would need a chosen people. I understand the whole chosen for service, not superiority thing, but I don't get why one group would need to be singled out for service. I guess as a role model to other groups, but why couldn't God just, say, choose certain people within every group to set an example?

Sorry, I'm sure there's a really obvious answer to this that I'm just missing...

The Jews are the Chosen People. G-d chose us (or some would say that we chose G-d) to be His people.

A rabbinic theory has it that God initially offered the Torah to the world at large, but only the Jews were willing to accept the rigors involved with being a choosen one.
