Being something between life and death had its advantages. One of them being that you did not have to sleep. Unfortunately, for Yvette, that would have been a very welcome change from all that had been going on. She had been up all evening, mourning over her humanity and over all the people she had killed. At least, she assumed she killed them all.

When daylight came, at first she initially felt scorn towards the new day. How dare the sun rise after she had done so many bad things the day before! Another day just meant she'd black out and do more damage to more innocent people. She had gotten up just so she could walk to the exit of the bathroom to shake her fist at the new day when something in the mirror caught her eye.

In the mirror, regular ol' Yvette was there, looking slightly green, but still like a person. For a moment, the dead girl had to stare in the mirror, rubbing her eyes gently and refocusing her gaze into the mirror. Most certainly this had not been a dream, had it?

Of course, she still had dried up flecks of blood on her face, which was reminder enough that everything she had done was real. Were she still alive, her cheeks would have flushed upon such a realization, but instead, her cheeks remained cold and that pale hue of green. However, there were no claws to be seen, no dead eyes staring back at her in the mirror, and she looked as alive as she had ever been. It felt like she was being given a second chance!

With a small gay smile upon her gray lips, she attempted to turn on one of the faucets at the sink. Despite the nozzle being turned, nothing came out of the tap. That small smile of hers quickly faded. It would be really bad if she went out with all that blood on her face. So now, how could she clean her face if there was no water.

Yvette, you silly girl! her mind teased. There is still water here, you just are looking in the wrong place. As if her body was once again taken over by a foreign force, her body turned on its own to face the toilets. Her gray lips frowned even more. "R-r-r-really?" she managed to stutter out to herself. In all honesty, she knew that the toilet water really couldn't do much to her. It wasn't like she could get sick, she was already dead. Yet, that still humane part of her was cringing at the idea of using toilet water to clean off her face.

With tiny steps, she edged closer to the toilet and leaned towards it. With her small hands, she splashed some water on her face. She pinched her eyes shut, even though she really had no need to do such. Human instinct had been with her for 18 years, and it was somewhat difficult to break the basic habits like blinking. With her eyes still shut, she began to rub away at her face with the sleeves of her black school uniform sweater.

At least you won't be able to see the blood stains on this she noted mentally, trying to find something positive out of the whole situation. Cautiously, she opened her eyes again, then wandered back to the mirror. She missed a couple spots, but that was easily remedied once she was in front of the mirror.

Though her stomach was aching from hunger yet again, Yvette did the boldest thing she had ever done in her life (or after her life). She went to go find people. She exited the bathroom cautiously, looking right and left as if crossing the street. Satisfied that things were safe for her, she began to wander about the campus again.

The realization Topher had come too made his quest for survivors meaningless. For the first time, he really felt like he was all alone. It was like some claustrophobic, personal version of Y:The Last Man except there weren't any women either...and he didn't get a pet monkey. The twitching on his injured hand had gotten worse, his index finger nearly completely numb from the stress of the bite. Though he took some solace in the fact that he wasn't bleeding from anywhere anymore. All of the various cuts and scrapes from the fire had healed and the once devilish gash that settled between his eyes was coming along nicely as a dull red bruise.

There really wasn't much to do but wander. Whatever had happened in the garden was slowly filtering behind him. "I have to get home..." His voice was small and meek like he'd finally realized that he was and no one could hear. Blue eyes slowly lifted to the still grayish sky, sun still trying to break through the haze. His index finger twitched as the weight of the pool stick in his hand shifted. The boy slowly brought his unhurt hand to his lips, nervously chewing on his already chipped nail.

"Anyone up there listening, " the boy quietly whispered, "I wanna be out of this mess. I want things to go back to normal. If you can just give me that..." He would what? Topher really didn't have much to go on. His faith was already occupied. All the love in his heart had been dedicated to other things. Anything he would say would be an empty promise. That wouldn't do. "I guess that I really can't give you anything."

Topher sighed, ruffling his bangs so they fell over his eyes. He felt awkwardly defeated even though he still seemed alive and not craving human flesh like his friends had been. Of course, he was alone. That felt just as...painful as the hunger they felt as he continued on, ambling forward to find some sort of purpose in his loneliness.

The one thing that the dark-haired girl had yet to get used to out of this whole thing was how slow her legs were acting. She couldn't walk properly, despite looking like the average student. Her legs felt so heavy, that each step looked as if she was limping or staggering along. Running, skipping, or any other sort of leg movement was pretty much impossible for her now. A nearly inaudible sigh escaped her lips.

She felt a bit lonely, but also quite high strung. What if she met another student and attempted to attack them as well? If it hadn't been for the fact she was already dead, she would have been convinced that all of these bad things she had done with tally up against her and cause her to plummet to hell. Though she had given up on the notion of hell, she still felt horrible about everything.

She practically stumbled past the charred remains of one of the tall trees, eyes eagerly looking about to find a person. Even if it was someone she didn't know before, she could at least talk to them. Or maybe warn them, depending on how hungry she got when around them.

It was there, just past the charred tree, that she saw him. If she had the voice, she would have shouted to get his attention. If she wasn't so afraid of what he thought, she might have approached him. Topher looked awful. Somewhere in her chest, she felt a pain, though it was probably imagined, since her whole body was dead. She wanted to talk to him, but after what she had done, she knew it wasn't possible. Even with her dulled purple eyes, she looked almost like a green puppy begging for attention. A very sad green puppy.

Topher was weary and tired. It had been awhile since he'd gotten any real sleep. Days had become nights and nights had become twelve hours of horrific sounds that made him believe once again that there were in fact monsters in his closet. Nothing human could have made those noises. He tiredly rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, swaying precariously from side to side as he did. There wasn't much left to the boy standing looking as desolate and lost as ever.

When his eyes finally blinked open once again, Topher still felt like he was in some sort of daze.

"What do I do now? I...I know I have to get out of here but what the hell do I do?" He groaned, falling to his knees under what he suspected had been some sort of archway. Quickly righting himself the sullen boy leaned his back against the ruins, resting his head against the cold stone. A painful twinge in the back of his mind was the only thing running through his head at the time. This twinge was the feeling of isolation and it was eating away at what made him tick. If he really was the last person that hadn't succumbed to some sort of illness then he would have to try his best to stay that way even if that meant abandoning people all together.

He would have to play any card he was given and go with whatever that entailed.

With wide eyes, the girl watched silently. There wasn't much pain she could pay proper attention to aside from the hunger, but somehow, when Topher fell to his knees, it was too much for Yvette to bear. Her feet knew what she wanted to do and seemed to act accordingly, despite the fact the girl knew that Topher wouldn't want to see her. She was happy he was alive, but he looked so horrible, it must have somehow been her fault.

Had her heart been alive still, she would have probably heard it beating in her head again. She was getting nervous, but her legs did not stop until she was literally standing right in front of Topher.

Regardless of what sort of reaction she was about to get, Yvette got something off her chest: "Topher, I'm sorry!" In her usual manner, her eyes were on the ground, as if ready to receive some sort of punishment for her misdeeds. He had every right to be upset at her, and he had every right to be scared of her. Half the time, she was scared of herself these days, not knowing who she would hurt next.

It was moments like this when Topher finally knew why silence was golden. Nothing seemed to be moving at all. An oil painting that he was fortunate to inhabit. The boy slowly crossed his arms, resting the pool stick oinhis lap. For the first time in what seemed like forever, his eyes slowly started to close for any sort of rest he could get. Sleeping in the open probably wasn't the best idea but it wasn't like he could get much further.

A soft voice woke him out of a seemingly comatose state of mind. "Wha...What?" One bright blue eyes slowly opened, seeing a blurry mass of color in his direct line of sight. On instinct, Topher's entire body snapped to attention, rolling out from under the obvious shadow. His eyes were still frantically trying to gain purchase on the figure before him. Though, he didn't like what he saw. Purple hair that was off a few shades, dull purple eyes that no longer had that certain spark of life and the same shy stance he had grown accustomed to.

Yvette...

"No. No...n...no...no" his voice was unsteady and cracking awkwardly with obvious distress. Her apology lost on him. His fingers scrambled for the pool stick the had been carelessly knocked off of his lap with his harsh movements. He kept his eyes on her, blue eyes going as dark as his expression. A look of abject horror was painted over his features, marring the face she probably remembered.

If he looked horrible before, Topher probably looked like a grand mess when he finally hooked his injured hand around the pool cue, letting out a groan as pain slowly migrated back. "Wh-what do you want? I know there's something wrong with you. Everyone I've met has the same thing going on with them. I'm not letting myself get sick so just stay back..."

Her eyes remained fixed on the ground, still quite ashamed with what she had done. She didn't have to look up to realize that he was afraid of her. His voice told volumes in itself, and right now it told her that he wanted nothing to do with her. Even though she had come into this situation fully aware that something like this would happen, it still hurt to think their friendship had broken up in such a fashion.

She didn't move from her spot, but she attempted to correct something he had mentioned. Even though she had told herself she would be good, and that she would tell him everything she could, her voice still stuttered slightly. For being something dead, her emotions were still able to get the best of her.

"Y-y-you were told r-right before." She clenched her hands tightly against her skirt as she stood there. It was hard for her to admit something so strange.

"I... I'm not sick."

There was a long, awkward pause. She wanted to be able to look at him. Her head felt so heavy right now though. So as best as she could, she attempted to look up from where her head was hanging.

"I...I-i'm dead. I...I d-d-don't have a p-pulse..."

Her eyes sank heavily, this time out of self pity more than anything else. If anything, she wanted to cry again. However, the girl had promised herself she wouldn't cry. This was supposed to be a good day. You did not cry on good days!

Dead? Was this her sick version of a joke? His darted over her form, taking in her appearance once again. Was this really what was going on? Undead people walking around? Zombies walking around? Apparently, this wasn't meningitis at all. Far from it in fact. Even Topher's breath seemed hesitant as the thought rattled around inside his head. "But that's impossible...right?" Right? Dead people couldn't walk around and yet, here she was. Nothing about her really looked alive. This would have been a pretty elaborate trick for anyone to pull just to scare him.

"It can't be true. You...died? You actually died?" Something about that statement made his insides churn. Everything was wrong with it. It defied all logic or at least what he thought was real logic.

His tongue snaked out to nervously wet his lips, grip on the pool stick going slack. Would he really believe that? Would he really believe that she was dead? Yvette was never one to lie and he was one who frequently believed those around him. His feet shuffled a bit, one step towards her and then one step back. Still, the threat of pain kept him at a distance. Dead or not, she was a danger to his person. With ever passing moment, it was evident that Topher was really struggling to understand what was going on. The look of horror on his face morphed through pretty much every human emotion possible rapid fire but ended up stopping on a mixture between confusion and apprehension.

His mouth opened randomly, utterly small sounds that could have been the beginning of sentences before his mind could settle on something concrete. "Are you sure you're dead? Maybe it's just shock or something? Besides, you bit me. You actually bit me. Maybe it's some kind of brain thing or something. You...never know these days with all these new diseases running around..."

It was pretty obvious that he didn't believe his own statement. If anything, Topher was fairly certain that Yvette knew how to take her own pulse and if it was so low that it couldn't be registered, she wouldn't be even be conscious.

Yvette wished she could smile. She wished she could smile every time her friend attempted to look at the optimistic side. Tried to find any excuse as to why she would be doing everything she had done so far. Topher had always been like that, trying to find the best of any situation presented to him. However, this wasn't any math paper he was having problems with, it was Yvette.

Even the votes of confidence seemed to go unnoticed, for the dark-haired girl knew the truth. The mirror did not lie to her. Her monstrous hunger in her stomach also did not lie. Yvette was a monster now. An undead monster.

She wanted to prove herself to him, but as always, she was shooting down any possible option, labeling each idea as "not good enough." Her hands which had been gripping tightly to the plaid cloth of her skirt began to shake slightly as she let out a couple of silent sobs. So much for not crying today.

"I'm sorry, I'm s-so sorry..." she whimpered out miserably. Assuming he wanted nothing more to do with her, she turned away and began to slow departure. Those stupid legs of hers just never wanted to cooperate with her.

Topher couldn't say anything more, his throat clogged up with too many awkward phrases and words that just didn't make sense. Yvette seemed so much like herself even now. This wasn't the creature who bit him. She had to be something else back then. His finger objected to his reasoning, twitching wildly against the impromptu weapon in his hands. When he took a step towards her, it burned, nerves remembering the pain he had been in before.

"Wait!..." He croaked out, voice sounding like it didn't agree with anything his mind was telling him. She tried to eat him for gods sake and here he was trying to get her to come back. "I-I need someone to talk to...anyone."

His hand slowly reached out after her, fingers drumming in mid air. "I just need to be with someone. I've been alone for so long. It hurts. I can't be alone anymore." Tears started to well in the boy's eyes, threatening to fall at any moment, the look on his face, one of pure desperation. "If you can promise not to bite me then can we at least take a walk or something or just stand and talk like this? Anything would be fine. I just want some company..." A small, almost delusional smile pulled at his lips.

At this moment, Yvette was the only thing he had. She was the only thing that was keeping him from being as lonely as he was. He honestly didn't care if they spent their time arguing, Topher just need someone.

It was a natural reaction to stop in place when someone called out "Wait" at you. Her body ceased staggering forward for a bit as she listened to her friend's pleas of desperation. The ever still heart in her chest felt heavy somehow, but it must have been her imagination, because she was dead. Slowly, her face turned to face her friend.

"I. I can't promise anything. I... I don't even trust myself anymore..."

How could she promise something so simple to him? Each time her friends had disappeared, Yvette had completely blacked out. Making such a promise would be irresponsible on her part. Even with Topher being safe, she had done some pretty bad things to Kimmie and Azzo. The splatter paint of crimson on her face the evening before was proof enough of that.

Even with such thoughts in her mind, she wanted to smile towards Topher, wanted to reassure him that he'd be safe. It would be a hollow reassurance, because she really didn't know if he would be safe. Her lips refused to cooperate though. Instead of a smile, a tiny frown was on her lips. In fact, the frown quivered a bit as she forced back the sensation of sobbing. All this managed to do was make it look as if she still wanted to cry.

With his mind still trying to process everything that had happened in such a short time, he barely registered her response beyond key words.

"Well.." Topher look about, trying to find something to aid in his quest for some sort of conversation. His eyes finally landed on the pool stick in his hands. Could he? Did he really have no other choice? This was pretty much his child. Everything about it was so him. And yet, Yvette was still his friend somewhere deep in her supposedly dead heart. He took a deep breath, exhaling with a drawn out sigh of defeat. "If you need to..." his voice trailed off a bit before slowly coming back to life, "...then just bite on this."

His fingers slowly unscrewed the blue cue from the thin end of the stick, holding out the oak rod to her. The blue cue was still tightly clutched in his opposite hand. There was no way he would be giving that away. It was a part of him. It was him. "It'll give me enough warning to run if you feel a bit off. Don't worry about breaking it if you bite too hard. I have plenty at home." It wasn't much but it was the only option he had at the moment. At least it would give him a chance to talk to someone without the imminent danger of being randomly attacked. She seemed in her right mind to tell him to run the last time. Topher had just been too stupid to get the hell out of her way.

At the sight of her frown, his heart sank. It may have been typical Yvette behavior but it didn't make him feel any better in the slightest. "Don't cry Yvette. It's okay. You didn't hurt me too bad. I'm just tired and stuff..." The pool cue almost squealed in protest as he grasped it tighter, trying his best to hide his twitching hand from her gaze. "Everything will be alright..."

Her dull, purple-gray eyes followed along Topher's motions, watching as if they were just drawn to the movement rather than watching in actual interest. His offer was a good one, and she really wanted to say it was an excellent idea. However, she could still find a flaw in the concept.

A pool stick would require her to actually hold it in place. She'd consciously have to be able to keep it in her mouth. Yvette was actually more certain that if she blacked out again, that would be the least likely thing her body would actually attempt to do.

"No... it won't work..." she uttered softly as she pushed the stick back in his general direction.

She heaved out a sigh, as if trying to push all the frustrations out of her dead-body. If only there was a way to hold her mouth shut against her will. The concept was good if Yvette was consciously able to complete the task, but she needed something that would remain in place, even if she wasn't aware of what she was doing.

It was then that something clicked in her mind.

She seemed to eye her own uniform. That in itself seemed okay, but when the girl reached for the bottom portion of her skirt and began to tear at the cloth as best as her hands could, one might have questioned what she was doing. It was surprising how much strength Yvette's little pale green hands had, considering the cloth was quite tough and durable. All the same, the cloth tore easily enough, and soon enough the dark-haired girl's skirt was shorter all around. Shyly, she offered the torn cloth to her friend. She didn't explain what he was supposed to do with it and seemed to avoid eye contact. All she offered was "I... I don't want to hurt anymore people..."

For the first time in his life, he felt bizarrely stupid holding a pool stick there. He figured it would have been a decent solution to their problem. Who could bite when they had a pool stick in their mouth? Of course, Topher had no idea that she completely blacked out when she attacked and that she would probably have to hold it there to keep her mouth occupied. Both of those reasons would have made it a pretty dumb idea had he known at any point in time.

"I suppose you're right..." He still wasn't quite sure why but she obviously knew it wouldn't work so he decided not to stress the issues. Topher simply screwed it back into place, hiding the look of relief at the fact that he wouldn't have to sacrifice it to her hunger.

When all was said and done, his eyes focused back on her. Maybe she had an idea of what they could do. He worked up a goofy smile on his face, a small one but at least it was some sort of smile. "Do you have any-what are you doing?..." The smile he had been sporting instantly melted into a slack jawed stare.

He was faced with Yvette ripping her skirt. Topher's eyes went wide for a moment, lips forming the beginnings of words that never got quite past his throat. Nothing in his mind clicked as a solution for their problem by her supposedly taking off her clothing. There was no 'A' to 'B' scenario he could fall back on. The boy was even more confused when she handed it to him. What was this? Some kind of souvenir? He eyed the plaid piece of cloth, completely bewildered at it's purpose. His fingers flexed a bit, semi-reaching for what she was holding out to him.

"What am I supposed to do with it? Tie your mouth up or something?..." Those were words that he thought he'd never utter, especially to her. It all sounded so...odd.

Yvette already was aware that her plan was a bit on the strange side. So hearing him basically repeat what her mind had decided on earlier seemed to create a reaction of embarrassment and shyness in the girl. If there was still living blood running through her body, her cheeks would have been instantly flooded with color. Instead, they remained that neutral pale green color. Her mouth attempted to reply, but her voice seemed to have shrunk down even further to the point it was practically invisible.

Realizing her voice was not cooperating, she vigorously nodded her head up and down. She still couldn't even look him in the face. It was a horrible request, and a horribly degrading request in all honesty.

It was about this time that her hand began to tremble before it reached up to clutch onto her stomach. It really hurt, and the stabbing pains were only getting stronger and stronger. The temptation to look at Topher, to draw herself close and feel his warm skin pulsed through her body.

No! That isn't right! she mentally scolded herself before beginning to dig her nails deep into the cloth and skin that her hand was clutching about her stomach.
