It had been a tiring time, ever chasing the one creature that had always eluded him. The last Unicorn, or at least the last and only one that attracted him so alluringly. The flaming crest over his back was at a mere smolder to conserve the energy he would need if the trail came back again. Bile huffed stomping a black hoof as he stopped, head raising a little over his shoulders before lowering again to its near ground level position. It seemed to be getting colder as of late, the leaves crackled beneath his hooves as he stepped, the air itself stung. Flaming tail flicking behind him, the bull like kirin ambled on, blunt nose sniffing at the ground in a sweeping motion, where was it. Where was that scent? He had had it not too long ago, already the small flakes of cold were landing on his nose making his head shaking. Was that what was making the scent disappear? Just perfect, Bile grumbled as he stopped once more, tuning just so, unknowingly whacking his head on a tree, what else could go wrong?

Amalthea was the last member she knew of from an old herd of predominantly white kirin with the same type of horn and lack of faceplates as she, and she had been aware for some months of a blind, flaming red stallion with a peculiar pair of horns and no proper mane or tail following her. As curious as she was a little frightened of this stallion, she had managed to sneak around behind him late one night when she's crossed an island in the river so she could observe her pursuer.

She hadn't initially known that he was aflame or that he was blind. The fire made her nervous, but the blindness...it made her feel a little sorry for him. It was rather sad to see a kirin stallion who seemed to incur upon himself so much misfortune when she had been accustomed growing up to "perfect" stallions.

She watched him as he walked through the falling snow, moving his head from side to side, trying to catch the scent of the trail he'd been following from before she'd slipped behind him. She cocked her head, as he seemed to be having difficulty, until it occurred to her that snow was just really cold water, and water concealed scents. No wonder this stallion seemed so unlucky in his pursuit of her, and he didn't realize she was standing in a snowbank above his head on a little ridge a couple kirin lengths away from him. She was about to start munching on treebark, since most of the nearby greenery had died or been swallowed up in the snow, when he whacked his head with its peculiar pair of horns into the tree. She stared, trying for a few moments to figure out what to do.

The bull gave a snort as he heaved backwards, trying to get his horns from the tree. The tree itself was a limber one as it bent with each pull, but didn't give up its hold on his horns. Flaming tail flicking sharply behind him, Bile growled at himself for not smelling the blasted thing, he would have thought that he could smell anything. Thus he stopped for a moment, ear flicking as a thought came to him. Perhaps this snow had weakened his nose, he had lost the trail of the beast that always escaped him. With another snort, Bile heaved at the tree again, with a bit of a crack, his horns pulled free. Staggering to the side, he fell onto his belly, the tree falling to land on his fire crested back.

"At least I'm not suck..." He grumbled shifting to get his hooves beneath himself again. "Well not stuck in one sense." Even though the tree hadn't seemed that big, it felt huge to the bull kirin. Shaking his head some, the flames cresting his head flickering within the motion. "This cold season is going to kill me." Without knowing that the Unikirin wasn't that far off, watching his folly. Bile slumped back to the ground to rest for a while wishing the frozen stuff under him were gone already.

Watching the bull kirin's condition go from bad to worse made Amalthea laugh, bright peals of silvery laughter that she couldn't hold back for anything. In truth, she felt guilty for laughing at him, and shy of him, the one who had been pursuing her all these months, but his situation truly able to laugh, which was rare. Amalthea was not given to laughter even in happier times, and being alone in the world had made her a little morose. In hind sight, this stallion's pursuit had chased away her loneliness and made her feel...safe, part of the world, like she was with others with whom she could communicate. The sudden realization made her smile as she continued to laugh out loud.
